How Disney has neutered their villains, an essay by a bored pumpkin
We all love Disney villains, they’re why some of us have a tumblr in the first place. A way to express our favorites to other people and/or give love to underrated villains. They’re also one of the most memorable things about Disney: their ability to create dark villains.
Many villains are so iconic that they show up at the theme parks and especially during October, with the Halloween season. However, I feel that ever since the 2000s, the villains have been toned down to the point where you can’t call them villains, only antagonists and bad guys.
So today, I’m gonna explain why I feel like this and why it’s kind of gotten sad too. Also, this is just my personal opinion, y’all don’t have to agree with me.
Anyways, rambling is below the cut.
First, let’s discuss the difference between a bad guy, an antagonist, and villain, as these terms get confused as being the same due to being similar.
A bad guy is the word that “antagonist” and “villain” namely tie into as they’re similars of it. But the definition that’s commonly used for it is your average criminal you see on the street.
An antagonist, while similar to a villain, is actually what the protagonist lacks and are the creators of conflicts. Think Abuela Alma from Encanto. She’s not the villain, but she’s an obstacle and brings conflict to Mirabel.
Now, a villain is what we’re all familiar with. Their actions are important to the plot; Ernesto poisoning Héctor, Maleficent cursing Aurora, etc. These are the most common of bad guys in media, and over the years, the Disney villains are starting to become the antagonist slightly.
The 30s up until the 90s was where the villains had no chill. The first Disney villain, The Evil Queen from Snow White, literally tried to poison her stepdaughter and also made a sort of blueprint for how villain should be.
Their design needs to be somewhat iconic, their voice needs to be menacing and cool, their deaths are horrifying, and their actions need to drive the plot along with downright brutal.
Exhibit A: Maleficent cursing Aurora as a baby
Exhibit B: McLeach having no issue with attempted child murder
Exhibit C: Scar literally murdering his brother in front of his nephew
And so on and so forth.
Each of these villains have something iconic about them, and their actions are memorable while also very dark. But the villains are also both funny and menacing. You only really need a dark villain when the story asks for it, and in my opinion, there are two villains who do their job right of being a dark as fuck villain.
Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
We all know about Frollo so I’ll give a brief summary of him. Basically, this dude is fucking insane. He also represents three of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Wrath, and of course Lust. He lusted after the gypsy, Esmeralda, basically set Notre Dame ablaze, and tried to kill Quasimodo once as a baby and when he was an adult.
With HOND being a dark story, it makes sense as to why Frollo would be dark and it checks out. He also checks out the blueprints set by Grimhilde: his actions are dark, his voice and design are iconic, and his death is horrifying; literally showing that he’s going to Hell.
Now what about Judge Doom? Why is he so dark?
Well if you remember correctly, Judge Doom is technically a toon. But not just any toon: he is the toon that murdered Eddie Valient’s brother by dropping a piano on his head. And that’s not all.
Doom made a liquid that can permanently kill a toon: The Dip. It’s made out of paint thinners, which are used to erase a cartoon on the drawing board. And when we see that Doom is a toon, you realize: “Holy shit, this dude made something to kill his own kind.”
Doom had NO issue with destroying ToonTown. He wanted money AND to him, he thought it was funny.
And like Frollo, Doom immediately checks out with the blueprints: iconic design, iconic voice, actions are horrifying and drive the plot, and lets just say that, in my opinion, Doom’s death (and Doom in general) traumatized a generation of kids and adults.
These two villains are perfect examples of having dark villains for dark movies. And all of the other Disney villains are perfect examples of being funny and dark for kids movies. However, I feel like the moment the 2000s rolled around, things changed.
The 2000s and so on was definitely a time where people started to get more sensitive and kiddish, and Disney was no exception. Of course, they did make movies that are somewhat hardcore, but the same cannot be said for their villains.
Alameda Slim, Captain Gantu, Bowler Hat Guy. They all fill out the blueprints like their predecessors, but something felt off. They felt more toned down. Dark, yes, but it was definitely very kiddish than what we’ve been accustomed to the previous years. And it should be noted that this was when Disney started to slow down on killing their villains.
The two villains I feel that are like their predecessors are Dr. Facilier and Rourke. Their actions were dark, their whole aura was iconic, but their deaths were also pretty hardcore too.
Rourke was turned into a crystal and was literally shattered onscreen, and Facilier was dragged into Hell/the Loa ONSCREEN AND WE SAW HIS GRAVESTONE.
So, you see where I’m going with this? These two villains felt like they were from the 30s-90s, while everyone else felt like they were just PGd into oblivion.
The 2010s and forward was where the title of “villain” was completely lost. Of course, there are exceptions. King Candy/Turbo was a great comeback and Mother Gothel was awesome too, but that was it. Disney instead turned to Pixar’s motive for villains: twist villains.
The unholy trilogy of Disney’s twist villains are obviously Hans, Callaghan, and the sheep from Zootopia. And this is also where the blueprints set by Grimhilde were lost.
So let’s do this. Ignore Gothel and Turbo and only think of the villains after them. Can you name a single memorable thing about them? Any iconic lines? Can you remember their designs? Yeah, it’s pretty hard. Well, that’s my point.
These villains can only be called “antagonists” and “bad guys” because that’s how Disney sets them up to be. They’re so toned down that it kind of feels wrong to call them villains because what they do, while still dark and drives the plot, is just so kiddy.
Of course, you don’t need a villain with every movie. Encanto and Winnie the Pooh are good examples. YES, Abuela Alma was an ANTAGONIST, but she redeemed herself in the end and that movie was namely focused on the family trauma and Mirabel.
You might be thinking, “Sp00ks. Is this really necessary? Disney is just trying to make things appropriate for younger audiences.”
I’m sorry, but for the past 90 years, if this company has been showing their villains to be dark as Hell and have them be evil evil, yeah I’m gonna notice these changes.
So that’s why I believe that, in my opinion and based on what I’ve been seeing, Disney has been neutering their villains.
I haven’t seen Strange World, so I don’t know if that movie has a villain or not, but at this point I don’t care, which is disappointing.
Disney Villains are so memorable and it’s saying a lot when you can’t remember their villains from 10 years ago, but you can remember their villains from almost a century ago.

(Just a little something)
Meadows of Hope
“Steve, no. C’mon, Steve, you gotta come back. You can’t leave me alone again. Please, Steve, don’t leave me alone again! I need you, Steve! We haven’t even finished planning the wedding!”
“No, no, no, no, no”
Robin climbs back through to the Upside Down with no hesitation. She scrambles to Steve’s side and is holding his face in her hands.
“Steve, no. C’mon, Steve, you gotta come back. You can’t leave me alone again. Please, Steve, don’t leave me alone again! I need you, Steve! We haven’t even finished planning the wedding!”
There’s was a gasp from Nancy behind her but Robin doesn’t care right now because she needs her best friend back. She can’t lose him. It might just kill her if Steve dies. Suddenly, there’s hands on her shoulders and she’s turned around. Nancy looks determined.
“What’s his song, Robin!”
She realizes and tells Nancy, quickly turning back to Steve and praying if she keeps saying all the important stuff Steve has to know, has to remember, that he’ll come back to them.
“Steve, you gotta come back. We need you! You have kids to come home to. You have me and all your friends to come home to! C’mon, Steve, remember Eddie? He’s right there on the other side of the gate waiting for you to come home and valiently sweep him off his feet. God, please don’t leave me, Steve.”
She rests her forehead on his as she keeps talking. Praying that he can even hear her while no music is playing.
“Steve, you- I can’t lose you. You’re my Iris, remember? Think of all the Sunflowers, Steve. They’re all waiting for you. You gotta run to the Sunflowers- to your Iris -Please! Create a damn meadow in your mind’s eye if you have to, but don’t stop fighting!”
About halfway through her second bout of trying to reach her best friend, Eddie comes in on his guitar with Steve’s song. She knows he definitely can hear her now, so she doesn’t stop.
“Steve, we’re having a fall wedding, remember? Cuz we both know I’ll already be sweating through any dress I’d end up wearing, but why make it worse with a ceremony in Summer? You have to be here to marry me, Steve. You promised you-“
Robin realizes for a brief moment that she’s completely lost control of her face at this point. She’s sobbing and snotting all over both of them. Knowing Steve, he’ll come back and tell her that she has to do all the laundry once they kill Vecna for covering him in snot again. Hopes he will.
“-please, I can’t be alone again! Don’t leave me on the roof, please, Steve! You’re the only person I have, please! Without your laughter I’d go blind! Without your eyes I’d go deaf! You remind me to keep going! You keep me from just giving up! You can’t give up, Steve!”
When she realizes that Nancy has started to sing into Steve’s ear right beside her, Robin joins in. Maybe he needs them to sing more than he needs to remember why he has to survive this. Anything to keep him from defying gravity and leaving her.
“Well, you came in loving me
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way
I thank you”

eddie valient is literally the saul goodman for the toons of toontown!!!

Ok... We all know that toons, especially animal toons, probably wouldn't reflect their real counterparts, the same SHOULD apply to the toon patrol as well.. But these facts that I learned about weasels are just too great, and I need to share with you since we both like the Toon Patrol XD
Well for starters, weasels can take down prey that's much larger than them. Considering that the TP is a gang and alot of people are taller than them, this checks out.
The weasel will perform a sort of 'war dance'. Our best guess as to why they do this is that this is supposed to confuse the prey (I'd be confused too if my opponent just starts dancing erratically out of the blue). Can you imagine if the toon patrol just broke out in a dance number before fighting somebody? (Maybe that's why they lost against Valient, they weren't ready and couldn't do their war dance yet XD)
Weasels' fur will turn white in the winter. I would be genuinely surprised if this turned out to be canon, but can you imagine how hilariously frustrating it would get for them? Especially if it snowed (in Toontown, since snow doesn't happen in LA)? They'd all have to play Marco Polo when out in the streets, especially with Psycho who wears his white straight jacket XD
According to an article, with how relentless and ruthless they are, weasels are considered natures psychos... And one of the Toon Patrol members is named Psycho... I'm not sure if the directors did that on purpose or not, but if not that would have been a missed opportunity XD
Weasels store food they don't eat and save it for later. And i think i read sonewhere that their also theives and store what they find too? I can actually see this being canon for the Toon Patrol, but in a more toony way? Like each weasel just has their own little storage/collection that they hoard. Either that or it would be literal here and they would keep their fridge stocked all the time. Which do you think it'd be? And if the former, what do you think they'd collect? (I think we all know what Greasy would collect...)
And last but not least, this gold mine of a fact right here.
Tumblr media
Ok thats enough animal facts today. I hope you have fun imagining these applying to the TP, or if not just enjoy some random animal facts XD
AHHHHH YES! More of it!!
First of all- a boogle? XD A sneak?? XD A c o n f u s i o n ???? I love all those, that's so good XDD
OMGG the war dance! Eddie did a dance!! Maybe thats why Smartass was so stumped! Like, no- no- He's using our method against us! What do I do!-
Oooooh, the turning white one! What if thats why the others wear such bright colours, so they're recognisable not by their looks- but their colours! But Psycho uses the snow as an advantage (I can see him being the most instinctual of them all)... all you see is a pair of swirly eyes bobbing around just before you get jumped.
NATURES PSYCHOS!! Oh for sure XD I love that.
Ooooh, so they're little kleptomaniacs! That's kinda perfect actually, I can imagine them all just plucking stuff up as they go and putting them in their pockets for later ^^ And oh, yeah, we can assume Greasy collects like... ladies underwear... 🤦🤦 Smartass probably likes little fancy things, like engraved silver lighters and music boxes. Wheezy also likes lighters, obviously, but also good probably stands out to him (I like to think he's the most level-headed of the group, I don't know why, he is the one with the intense addiction after all but I just have a feeling 😅😅). Stupid probably cant help but take sweets when he sees them, and he and Wheezy will share with each other at the end of the day (The are part of the same Boogle!! XD). An I can see Psycho taking sharp things. Knives, needles, scalpels, tooth picks, earring studs, etc.
Thank you so so so much for sending these in! They're all great and I'm definitely incorporating some into Weasel writings! ^^

Rod Rabbit pulls the old ‘not helping your case’ trope. In order to track the person who stole toon-making knowledge and leaked it to the public, he found he had to dig into very, very old cases - which entailed ransacking Eddie Valiant's apartment, now a kind of miniature museum and preserved well into the 2010s. That does not endear him to Toon Town at all; and indeed, its the stunt that introduces him to the world, and gets him on social media. Rod sees what he does as a means to an end, for the greater good of the case, but like a lot of hard-ass detectives in movies, he often disregards people's feelings...

Set in the 80's, a huge, cartoon themed restaurant was opened, under the name Roger Rabbit's Toontown. By the towns mysterious judge, Mr. Doom no less. Nobody could fathom why a normal man of law would establish such a business, let alone a man like Doom who's attire alone looked like he was ready for a funeral any minute. Especially a funeral he was the cause of.
Nevertheless, Mr. Doom's new gig quickly became quite popular among children and families. From the colorful visuals, the cute and witty cast of oddly advanced animatronic characters. It even brought in more tourists for the town! Which of course, made Doom an even bigger presence in the community than before.
However, no one ever stopped to wonder; how are these robots so advanced for the time? Why did the cruel judge even think about going into the family friendly business? And how do the toony characters seem so... Life like?
No one cared to question it. Neither did Eddie Valient, the new and desperate security guard hired for the night watch. But he's going to see exactly what these animatronics get up to when the curtain draws close...
The Restaurant
Judge Doom is an old soul. Which is a nice way of saying that he's a stuffy, old-fashioned man. And the decor of the place shows his taste. Despite the more toony and child friendly theme, it is definitely a homage to the early 1900s. It even makes history fun! Children can find plenty of interactive attractions around the place that will tell them interesting facts, such as how the first animated cartoon was made in 1908.
The size of the place is also clearly meant to make sure that the 'town' part of the establishments title was not to be taken lightly. Large enough to be considered a mansion, with one huge stage in the center and circled by the countless tables (think Dolly Parton's restaurant Stampede, as seen below), not to mention all of the secret passage ways and vents that allow the cast and staff to either navigate the restaurant without disturbing the show, or quickly make their way to the audience to interact with them and make them a part of the stageplay! Which, each play is on par with your favorite Saturday morning cartoons; wacky, zany, and just a hint of adult humor for the parents.

Eddie and whoever else might be on night watch with him will have quite the hassle keeping track of all the animatronics, when they know the place inside and out...
The Cast
The Humans
Judge Doom: The owner of this fine establishment. A mysterious man with a dark aura. Rumors say that going into the family entertainment business is him trying to turn over a new leaf... Though others believe that the family fun is an attempt to hide something far more sinister...
Eddie Valient: a down on his luck man who just needs something after the untimely and mysterious death of his brother. He can't keep asking his girlfriend for help, he knows she has her own bills to pay- not to mention he already owes her so much. He needs this job, even if those animatronics are freaky...
The Good Guys
Roger Rabbit: The main protagonist and mascot of the restaurant. This cute little rabbit just adores his beautiful wife, loves all of his friends, and offers a helping hand to those in need! Even if those mischievous weasels are out and about... Though sometimes, even heros need someone to save them...
Jessica Rabbit: The wife and secondary protagonist of the restaurant. Although her design is meant to appeal to the more mature members of the audience, she is always right beside her honey bunny and ready to step in when the weasels go too far...
Baby Herman: Oddly, the only humanoid animatronic in the whole establishment- next to Jessica that is. His role on stage is a sort of 'oblivious side plot'; Roger is almost always, for some reason, taking care of the baby and has to keep him out of trouble. Though when everyone goes home, this baby proves just how much of a loud mouthed brat he can be... It's odd how a child character would have such a crass soul deep down, no?
Benny the Cab: Taking the role of Roger's side kick and vehicle, this cab is part of the reason why the restaurant is so huge; to make room for such a huge animatronic, especially one made for chase scenes! Despite being a car, he almost seems a bit human... Though the same could be said for all the other animatronics too.
The Bad Guys
Smartassguy Weasel: The big bad of the whole cast. As the leader of the giggling pack of weasels, he's the one behind most of the nefarious plots against Roger Rabbit's Toontown. Mean, egotistical, and a cutthroat attitude to boot. You don't want to get on his bad side, as Eddie will find out soon enough...
Greasy Weasel: Smarty's perverted right-hand man. With an oily personality, a swift hand, and eyes on Mrs. Rabbit herself, it's a wonder Doom allowed this character to be made for a children's establishment... They should see what he's like when the lights go out.
Wheezy Weasel: This weasel is believed to be the Judges way of teaching children to say no to cigarettes. Quiet, intimidating, and with his glowing red hued eyes, it's odd how Wheezy wasn't chosen as the main villain for the cast...
Psycho Weasel: This animatronic has seemed to take it upon himself to bring a whole new meaning to 'interactive storytelling' in the grimmest sense. Psycho will often pop up out of nowhere and scare unsuspecting patrons, and the few times he speaks is always something... Sinister... Why Doom would think a character this morbid would be fit for family-friendly entertainment is anybodies guess.
Stupid Weasel: The only villain animatronic who seems to fit in the toony theme of the establishment the best. A big dumb brute, who just follows orders. His childish antics shine a more light-hearted light on the rest of his gang, but also make him stick out like a sore thumb... It's almost like he's not where he's supposed to be...
Will the nightguard be able to survive all five nights in Toontown? What do you think?

Wait... If Hup is Eddie Valient, Amri is Roger Rabbit, does that mean Naia is Jessica Rabbit? 👀
Yep. Well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to drop one last WIP shot, if you’re curious about what Naia looks like in this AU :d
