Getting into Len'en Lore: Part 3

This'll be the end!

★ Spinoff Game: Book of the Cafe

Curious title screen, isn't it? You can't even see the game logo yet! JynX said that it'd be revealed one day, but until then, here's the 5th released game in the series, though officially it's the 0th game.

This is Len'en Cafe ~ Book of the Cafe (abbr. BotC), and is the mobile social network game that JynX is actively working on at the moment.

Story Reading Order

The game's story is separated into three sections, the Main Story, Sub-stories and Back Issue stories. There's no particular order between these three, so I'll only list the order within each of them:

Video: Critical Point Bidding its Last Farewell

Critical Point Bidding its Last Farewell, full title Fumbling Dimensional Tour ~ Breaker and Pursuer /* B-P-B */ Protection against Breach ~ Request Colorful Dreams, Detest Empty Illusions (yes it's that long), is a music video uploaded onto Niconico back before Len'en was even released.

It was unclear if and how it related to Len'en, but with the release of AWTIF, it became clear that the characters depicted in the video are the main characters of the albums.

Additionally, it introduces the "Wings of Magritte", an interdimensional transcending limited express train that gets a brief mention in BPoHC.

As for reading, I can't really introduce much of an original source for it, but its page on the wiki and the Wings of Magritte's page is recommended.

Reading: Peing

Peing is a Q&A social media platform where fans could've sent JynX questions back in 2019. JynX has since abandoned its use, in fear that it'd make information too scattered, but what was answered has been documented.

JynX also has a YouTube channel, run by the "Vtuber androids" Rei and Zelo (and Lin too), more on these three later.

The channel has official soundtrack uploads, videos about the androids and videos where the androids announce Len'en-related news. They'd mostly be to get a grasp on the android's personalities, I'd say, though there are lore scraps in there as well.

They're all translated up on the wiki, so go check them out here.

Characters: Monochroids (Rei, Zelo and Lin)

Above: From right to left, Rei, Zelo and Lin, all in their chibi yukkuri forms.

Specifically speaking, these androids are actually called monochroids. Despite them mainly having appeared in videos and on Twitter only, there's a surprisingly amount of lore to them, especially on Rei.

It's a much deeper rabbit hole than one'd imagine, so go check it out!

JynX occasionally does illustrations for various occasions, be it seasonal events or the Len'en anniversary. They sometimes come with little comments, which you can read here.

Above: The 2nd anniversary's celebratory art, which, while not canon at all, comes with a few pieces of dialogue.

The Len'en series celebrates its anniversary on 11th November, not the day the games became available to the public, but the day JynX finished work on the first two Len'en games.

Often, JynX will release a YouTube video on the day, which we've already covered up above, but sometimes it'd be just an illustration instead, with some text to go with it.

This is JynX's old blog, the only real lore-related piece of information you'd find here is when JynX changed the kanji for Len'en, and even that's only tangentially related.

Blog: pixiv FANBOX

Technically speaking, pixiv FANBOX is a monetization platform first and foremost, allowing fans to donate to their favourite creators. You can do so to support JynX too, and in return you'd get a sneak peek into upcoming Len'en content.

Additionally, JynX also uses its posting system as their new blog these days, and there are actually quite a lot of lore-related and adjacent information here, like the music comments I linked to previously.

Vtuber: Kanae Tabinoki

Yep, JynX is also a Vtuber! Their Vtuber persona is called Kanae Tabinoki, and have near daily streams where they usually work, chat or game.

Strictly speaking, they're not really related to Len'en, though being played by JynX, it's rather inevitable that scraps of lore slip through their mouth.

All lore scraps are documented on the appropriate page on the wiki, though if you'd like you can also read their page and summaries of their streams to look into the details.

Social Media: Twitter

Finally, we come to the end. There are 5 twitter accounts that are relevant to the Len'en series in one way or another. They are:

Now these two are absolute gold-mines of lore, back when JynX didn't really realise how crazy fans will get about the lore, they would just drop random scraps onto twitter.

They don't do it much anymore, probably for the same reason Peing isn't used anymore, but I've started a project where I collect and translate all JynX and Rei/Zelo tweets, for future posterity.

The project isn't complete yet, but what is there can be found here. I've already found all lore scraps and documented them onto the wiki though, so there's no urgent need to read these at all.

These two are accounts belong to in-universe characters, and so in fear of spoiling things, I've left their names out.

To be completely honest, in terms of lore, Kanae's account is barely relevant. He mostly uses it to announce upcoming streams. I'm just listing it here for completion's sake.

Final Note: On the Len'en Wiki

Like I mentioned in part 1 your best friend really will be the Len'en wiki, the primary sources and their translations on the wiki are 100% trustworthy, be it game dialogue, associated files or even tweet quotes.

Pages where information needs to be synthesised on the other hand I would be slightly more careful with, there's not a lot of us wiki editors so many of those pages remain un-updated beyond the bare minimum. Misinformation should be kept to a minimum, though.

However, I will guarantee the quality of the Origin and Name sections! I've poured many hours into research for those, and I'm quite proud of them.

Also, there's a glossary navigation box that has a lot of pages for terms, key items and organizations listed there.

I mention this cause while the characters and location navboxes are probably easy to come across, this one might be a bit more obscure. The Youkai page is one example where it can be found.

Finally, the Len'en kanji change and what it signifies is detailed on the Len'en Project page, specifically under Name and Concept & Story Arcs, so there's also that to check out.

And that! Concludes everything you have to know to start fully immersing yourself into Len'en lore, to the point where you can drown in it like I have.

There are also announced but yet unreleased games and things of the like, but you can explore the wiki to find out about them, or even just ask other fans!

I must reiterate, I wouldn't be too worried about learning and reading up on whatever I've mentioned here in part 3. Part 1 and 2 are already a lot, after all and they're really the main basis you need to dig into the lore, getting immersed in all that does kinda snowballs into the obscure stuff naturally though, so you'll be back~ :)

And finally, to be completely shameless, I do some pretty neat Len'en related analyses and theories here that I feel aren't quite solid enough for the wiki. So if you somehow manage to consume all this and still hunger for more, come visit, yeah?

Memories

Please note: I'm calling Keith's dad Texas. It's nickname given to him by his fellow firefighters.

Warning! There is the death of a character written here. I described how they died. There is nothing graphic, if it could trigger you, THEN DON'T READ.

I kinda forgot to continue using the Texan accent, so there's only the first line that uses it.

"Keith. Keith! Wake up, bud. I have somethin' to show you. 'aight let's go."

Keith groggily followed his dad out the door of their small ranch home. Keith had always loved their house. Like his dad, he valued solitude.

Texas hoisted his son onto his shoulders easily. Keith had always been on the smaller side. He once told Keith that he had his mother's fire in him. His emotions were bigger than him.

They both clambered onto the roof together. "Now lay back," Texas ordered.

"But what if I fall?"

"Then I'll always be here to catch you. I know I'm getting old, but your old man will always have enough strength left in him to hold you up. Never forget that.

They waited in comfortable silence, When Keith closed his eyes, he could hear the few bugs strong enough to survive out here chirping in the background. Right as he was about to drift off, he heard his dad's soft whisper.

"Look up."

Keith looked once and never wanted to take his eyes away again. He saw light streaking across the sky like glowing raindrops. He could hear his father murmuring soft things about the light show above them. Keith settled into the soft comfort of that continuous voice. He always wondered how his dad could know so much about the world.

"You know, these meteoroids are like us. We're always alone, and we can't do anything about where life takes us. But we can get by just fine with a few good companions. You don't need all the diamonds in the sky to make a constellation. But they're still beautiful."

"Happy early birthday, Keith. Dream big dreams."

"Is that Texas's kid?"

"Dear lord help those two. Texas needs to take care of himself for his child's sake."

"He's our best firefighter! What would you suggest we do if he were to quit?"

"The world with go on, I assure you."

A crowd had gathered to watch as men and women in yellow rushed into the burning building like bees. It was a church, from what Keith could hear of the mob's conversations.

Finally, when the evacuation was closing up, he could hear his dad's voice call out, "Is there anyone missing? Is anyone still in there?"

"My child! He got left behind!"

And just like that, Texas dropped everything to run right back into that church. And Keith felt a sharp bot of fear as he heard the flaming walls of the building creak. But Texas would come back. He always came back.

He could hear people screaming out for Texas to stop. Their wails bled into the night and the sound of the crackling fire.

In a huge plume of smoke, the building fell. Keith could only watch in horror as the ash cleared and a small child appeared from the darkness.

Texas had saved the kid. That was all Keith could think as tears started streaming down his face. He ignored the people around telling him to come back as he raced towards the church.

The waited as close as he dared for his father to come back. He waited for him to pull himself out from the rubble and say, "See. bud? Your old man can't be beaten by some flames! Would you believe me if I told you I was scared for a moment there? But I know you weren't my brave hippo."

But it never happened. He watched as the fire finally ceased. He watched as his father's friends pulled his burnt, bloody body out of the piles of dirt.

Without hesitation, Keith ran up to his dad. He knew it was stupid to try and wake the man up, but he tried anyway. He shook Texas and sobbed into his chest. Keith could feel people place their hands on his shoulders to try and comfort him.

He didn't say a word. He had always been quiet for his age, and heard people in town whisper about how it was probably because of Texas's reclusive nature.

Even now, he knew they were judging him. They were judging him and the amazing man who knew everything there is to know about the stars and the earth and everything between.

As he watched his father's body being lowered deep into the dirt in the middle of a quiet meadow, he could hear the man's words.

"Dream big dreams. You're going to go further than I ever will. Do me a favor and fly all the way up to the stars, and past them if you can. I know you can. Your fire is too big to be held back here on Earth."

So Keith did. He worked hard. And he made it to the stars. And though he would never admit it, when he finally made it he knew it was only for one person.

"Thanks for holding me up, dad."

He came back with a gasp.

As he looked around, he realized that he was back at the castle of lions, surrounded by the other paladins.

This had been another 'bonding exercise' designed by Allura for them to get to know each other better.

This was not something Keith wanted to share. He felt invaded. The only thing the world could never take away from him was these memories, and now all of it was floating around the other paladins' brains.

He suddenly became aware of the tears flowing town his face and warm arms wrapped around him.

He heard Lance whisper in his ear, "You only need a few good ones, Keith. And we're here for you whether you like it or not."

Life really was like those shooting stars.

But Keith was finally okay with that.

★ I have been struggling with AN and orthorexia for over a decade. I was never officially diagnosed because I hid my disorder very well from my family and friends, but I have been diagnosed with ADHD and OCD and I continue to experience obsessions and compulsions around food and eating. I recovered from AN on my own and was actively trying to stay in recovery for six years but have recently been triggered into a relapse and made this blog against my better judgement lol

EMMA : Navi…? Is something wrong? You never come out of your own accord.

NAVI : …Is the Dream King really such a great guy?

NAVI : The King of Dreams? What’s that even supposed to be? He's just a boring, old, sloppy human, like everyone else, right?

EMMA : What?

EMMA : Don't speak ill of the Dream King.

GUI : Yeah, that's right… You can't be too disrespectful, or…

NAVI : Or what?

GUI : H-Hey…!

EMMA : (Navi…?)

NAVI : Those flowers.

CROW : What do you have against the Dream Flowers?

NAVI : ...I don't like them!

ITSUKI : …I don't understand. What are you even doing out here, Navi?

EMMA : Come on, now.

EMMA : (He seems really freaked out... I wonder…)

After Gran's scolding, Crow and Itsuki stayed up all night to finish their observations.

EMMA : Oh, good morning. Did you finish your report?

ITSUKI : Felt like it took forever... I didn’t think it was ever gonna end...

ITSUKI : Yeah, yeah. Paperwork really is a huge pain in the ass...!

EMMA : At least we talked HQ into accepting it. Good luck, Itsuki!

ITSUKI : Right… I made you go through a lot of trouble for that. I’m just gonna have to do my best then, I guess.

EMMA : Come to think of it, where are Crow and Gran?

ITSUKI : They left me and went to town earlier this morning... They told me to let you know they were, "Going to the Grand Crossroads". Exact words.

EMMA : The Grand Crossroads? Why would they go there?

KAI / GUI : Arghh...

EMMA : (Where are those sad voices coming from…)

KAI : Shit, we're still not done!

EMMA : Is that the joint assignment Kai and the others were talking about?

GUI : Yeah~... I'm not making any progress~… We can't do any of this without Sion's help~…

EMMA : …And where's Sion?

KAI : I don't know. Still sleeping like a dumbass.

GUI : The professor isn't here today. Lectures have been called off… I just hope Sion will help us finish the assignment...

EMMA : Have you guys felt the presence of a Black Fairy…!?

KAI : Sion, you came at the right time! We've got to get to the city, right--

SION : I'll go to the Grand Crossroads. You guys stay here.

SION : And Gui's magical tools aren't exactly made for combat. Not to mention, it would be counterintuitive and dangerous for him to go there with no magic.

GUI : K-Kai! I'm sure Sion is… He's just worried about us.

GUI : But… If anyone's hurt out there, you're gonna need Kai's magic, and…
