Uhh okay something to flex your OC (kind of??) muscle - the poor chap in ep1 on Bucky's observation mission, the one who was hit and Bucky patched up? Yeah that guy - just maybe something sweet about him rolling up to Bucky one day to thank him? Or just be sweet on him to the others' bewildered amusement?

It's been 72 hours since Buck went up the first time when he finds himself face-to-face with the wide, adoring eyes of a man he knows without question has been shattered by the wonderfulness of one Major Bucky Egan. He knows it from experience, after all.

His name is Duvall, he says when Buck asks his name. He's come over to the table because he'd seen Bucky there, but then Bucky had gotten up just as the man was making his way over, and so there's a delay in their meeting.

"He saved my life," Duvall says to Buck. "Got a bandage on me and kept making sure I stayed awake."

And Buck's not surprised Bucky did those things, but suddenly Bucky being unable to explain what it was like to him makes complete sense. How to explain saving this man's life? Saving anyone's life? As an observer? How to explain how terrible and awful it must have been to patch up this man younger than them both?

Bucky gives so much and expects so little, and Buck knows instantly that Bucky will be shocked that Duvall remembers him at all.

"Duvall!" Bucky says when he sits down again because of course Bucky remembers him.

Under the table, Buck feels Bucky's hand shake. He takes it in his own, squeezing hard to give Bucky a focus. Forgiving Bucky for not explaining what it was like up there.

Bucky squeezes back even harder, and Buck leans against his shoulder. "You saved this guy's life," he says. "I think he owes you a drink."

"Sure!" Duvall says and pops up. "And you, Major?" he asks Buck.

Buck's heart cracks and falls into pieces at this kind man in front of him and the one at his side. "Just a ginger beer for me," he says. "I wouldn't dare to try and match Major Egan."

Under the table, John squeezes Buck's hand even harder than before, telling Buck in that squeeze that he disagrees, that Buck matches him no matter the contest.

"Don't think I'll forget you saved his life," Buck murmurs in John's ear. "Don't think I'll ever forget that."

John breathes out hard and steals a quick kiss. "I didn't do anything anyone else wouldn't have done," he says.

But you did, Buck thinks. He knows better than to say it. He lifts their joined hands on the table so everyone can see who they are to each other.

When Duvall comes back with two whiskeys and a ginger beer, he beams at their joined hands. "Oh, you must be Buck!" he says. "The Major told me a couple of stories when we were landing to keep me awake. Did you really feather all four engines?"

Buck's so in love he thinks he might burst. "Just the once," he says instead. He lifts his ginger beer. "To your recovery, Duvall," he says because he knows John can't say it himself but very much wants to. "Congratulations."
