This is my piece for @wronghanded based on the Sangfielle post-mortem question about the Blackwick Group's gas station snacks.

conflicting desires for lyke and duvall in sangfielle season 2:

-duvall low-key resenting lyke over the chine thing

-lyke high-key resenting duvall over the oratorio thing and EXPECTING duvall to resent him over chine but instead it's the same one-sided tension that they had on the jade moon

i want them to be involuntary friends. I want it to look like a huge 8ft tall straight* guy calling his obviously gay best friend a wretched bitch and everyone is a little uncomfortable about it except for duvall, who may or may not be behind lyke's bizarrely bad luck when it comes to flies landing in his drinks.

(*i don't think lyke is straight but i do think he's the type of bisexual man that people assume is straight)

#broken record voice #i don't often have trans headcanons actually but sangfielle is an exception... #to me the blackwick group is T4TvsT4TvsT+ marn #lyke is joyfully trans - he's 8 ft tall because he went overboard with the transition magic #pickman and duvall are both stealth because they grew up in oppressive societies #pickman is deeply uncomfortable how vulnerable it makes her feel - she doesn't exactly hide it but will kill u for mentioning it #duvall does hide it but only because he's been hate crimed #until sapodilla - after which he receives the most idealized form of instant-srs from the bugs that his gender euphoria sky rockets #and he doesn't tell anyone exactly but everyone in the blackwick group clocks him on the change #pickman hates it and thinks he doesn't deserve such an easy out #lyke wouldprobably be happy for him if he wasn't pissed over the oratorio #es is the most well adjusted and is privately very happy for him but polite enough not to mention it #chine is trans but in the “this animal does not experience human gender and it's inappropriate to even try to make sense of it” way #chine is also the only one who has seen duvall in every stage of transition and has been enthusiastically supportive the whole time #marn is cis but if any of them hadn't already transitioned then she'd be trying to treat it like a curse to be cured. #i think pickman has had the most traditional medical transition because she distrusts magic - until she meets marn who absolutely #already has a recipe for an hrt-charm and gives one to her #duvall did some sort of terrible black-market medical transition in aldomina - the kind where he had to lie to ten thousand therapists #to convince them that he was actually a straight man and so he should be allowed to transition because a straight trans guy is safer #to society than a lesbian?? that type of horrorshow. meanwhile he's exclusively mlm (or as exclusive as he can be while fucking chine) #which pickman would have respected because to be trans is to suffer for it but nooo instead she didn't even know he was trans until the bug #transition #es is just chill. duvall eventually got a magical bug transition? well es is the magical bug for syntyche #sorry this went way off topic #i am avoiding going to work can you tell? woops #this was all to basically say that i think it'd be funny if #before the bug transition duvall low-key resented lyke for having been able to access magic transition. some guys have all the luck

Have you ever heard of Concentus?

It’s a city and a wall, both home and cage, Troy, if Ilion’s ramparts were built to keep Hector in. Two hundred years before the Blackwick Group met, when the dead rose and the first wild trains howled into the night, the quarreling nations set aside their differences to face the sprawling threat of the Heartland. The unreality of Sangfielle had begun to escape its borders, and soon threatened to engulf their so-called civilized homes, unless the infection was contained. So they built Concentus, the Ringed City, and etched wards and prayers along every stretch of its stone foundations, strong enough to keep the darkness at bay.

Included in those foundations was the actual, literal heart of one Dyre Ode, a strange man of almost godlike power, a skeleton of three hundred and six bones. To keep the world safe from an expanding Sangfielle, Dyre donated parts of themself to various places across the land, but as history ambled on, his gifts were taken for granted, their noble intentions subverted by ambition and greed. So he took them back, one at a time, until finally their heart was torn from the walls of the Ringed City, its magic broken along with his body. With Concentus tarnished, there is nothing now to stop Sangfielle from swallowing its neighbors. The parasite, once siloed, is free to spread once more.

What is sangfielle? Where do I find it?

oh boy oh man sangfielle is the seventh season of ttrpg podcast friends at the table (completely standalone from the previous six seasons) (available wherever you get your podcasts). it’s set in the titular sangfielle and can best be described as gothic western horror fantasy with some of the coolest and most balls to the walls lore ever created. they really turned the weirdness up to 11 for this one. its got sentient trains, mines with weird time shit going on, manors made of corrupt tree gods, and that’s just scratching the surface.

the actual story follows the blackwick group, a group of adventurers for hire who deal with the weird shit that goes on around sangfielle. they range from a huge goat woman who was trapped on one of said sentient trains for like 15 years and is now part of an order of knights devoted to managing them (as much as one can) to a guy who went on an expedition to a mysterious city only to return full of bees (and has so many issues about it) and the rest of the player characters are just as cool. it’s a show with a lot going on and it’s all a blast to listen to

I’m a few episodes into Sangfielle now (just started Roseroot Hall) and from what it sounds like, the Blackwick Group has been given the equivalent of an occult detective themed Spirit Halloween as their base of operations.

In this scenario Lyke would succeed in getting the heart of the Motherbeast in Episode 47 and while Alaway would notice & probably still call out to Aterika’Kaal the way he presumably did in canon, Lyke would be there and get to make a compelling case to Aterika’Kaal the likes of „If you stay with me I am going to feed you. I’ve taken care of you until now, I’ll keep doing that“ (argument supported by the fact he’s currently holding the heart of an incredibly powerful dead god). Aterika’kaal agrees and they barely escape through the Sanctum of the Stone Chorus portal. I think it's fun if Lyke then stays there after the hour described in the move is over, maybe knowing he can't convince Pickman & the others that what he's done is actually good, and fine, there's not even anything to worry about he has this totally handled, But yeah he then sets out from whereever in Sangfielle Aterika'Kaals domain is (Austin did say it was an actual place somewhere), and the rest of the Blackwick Group is left to wonder what the hell happened since Lyke just vanished! Alaway has possibly fucked off too after losing the heart. And them getting fired, the Carnival of Moted Light etc. would still happen (and I guess Chine would succeed at what they were doing since Lyke isn’t there?) and who knows if they’d take any action in finding Lyke after that! All that aside though, Lyke basically offers himself to feed on (through blood and/or energy) and to sustain that he keeps consuming(not literally eating) powerful objects/artifacts/resources and possibly eventually living things (I’d imagine he'd still take work as a „please deal with this weird shit for us“ person and when he has to kill a cursed beast or whatnot... might aswell feed Aterika'Kaal?) (What also plays into that decision, and is part of Lyke justifying this to himself, is that without him, Aterika’Kaal would become too powerful. So he aims to function as kind of a conduit & control the power intake so to speak. I think this probably doesn’t work for very long.) I think this eventually goes bad for him because it’s super taxing on his body and the whole deal kind of flips with Aterika’Kaal feeding/keeping HIM alive. He starts finding bodies in the domain again (alternatively, Aterika'Kaal gets better at hiding them because it knows Lyke doesn't particulary like it when it does that). Lyke probably gets stronger due to this power/magic wise, but also way more fragile (he's constantly anemic!). („I love you. I want us both to eat well.“ - Christopher Citro) („When I write of hunger I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and it is all one.“ M.K. Fisher) Notes: I put some resources Lyke’s canonically had in-game + some extra stuff in this picture (the arrow is a reference to Marn’s epilogue, the bugs are bugs (with possibly sinister connotations. If you want them to have those, it’s optional) and the fur is from the Ravening Beast). Another detail I came up with I might aswell tell you because otherwise noone might ever know: the ring with the blue stone is a gift from Es. Sketch Notes: 1. Lyke turning his head to kiss a rose / exposing his neck was one of my very first ideas/sketches I made while working on this, and I liked it too much to not include it. 2. This is supposed to be Aterika'Kaal giving Lyke a blood transfusion but it rather looks like it's feeding on him instead...! I like how the relaxed pose turned out. 3. I wanted to draw something smaller in a simpler style to fill the big canvas I was drawing these on (even though now I put them in separate files anyways...). The day I drew this I saw a tweet about a medieval monks sketchbook, so I was still thinking about that. I didn't even plan to color it originally but I ended up getting invested, haha

Inspired mainly by these 3 quotes: „KEITH: I’m a walking- I am a shrine to Aterika’Kaal.“ (Sangfielle 12: The Secret Ledger of Roseroot Hall Pt. 4) „KEITH: There's a version of dealing with Aterika'Kaal that ends with Lyke being satisfied that he rehabilitated a god or at least it looks […] like what he thinks Aterika'Kaal would have been before the YVEs showed up. That's probably his main retirement path, but it also might kill him instead.” (Sangfielle 47: Wax, Iron, and Ichor Pt. 4) „AUSTIN: As you’re fading, the last thing that you do is make this blood sacrifice to Aterika’Kaal. January Fic Round Up

It’s been a long time since I did any kind of real fic update, but I honestly post far too many fics to be cross-posting them all here SO: I’m going to do a monthly round-up of my posted fics at the end of the month instead (please ignore that we’re already half way through February lol).

An update of Fiction Is For Fools (f@tt, currently at 15k, sfw), my ongoing Hector/Heard wip, with pov alternating each chapter as we follow Hector and Heard from their first meeting through to their interactions during the ‘Messy Business’ arc of Bluff City and beyond. This is currently at 14/34 and updates on the first Monday of every month, but if you want to wait until it’s finished before you read it I totally get it and I will see you in late 2024.

following the trail of seasons (f@tt, 6k, sfw), my fic for this year’s Secret Samol! I got an absolute delight of a prompt this year and it was a joy to work on, a fic following Fero through a year in the post-Rhizome era, many years after the end of Hieron.

this morning i was thinking about sapodilla and that conversation at the start of the Oratorio (where art says ‘i abandoned my... friend... for this’ made me go back and relisten with an ear for chine/duvall and my brain has been cursed ever since)..and what that would have looked like from duvall’s perspective?

imagine: duvall is in his interview getting nervous, and then it’s lights out. everyone gathers together, (duvall has been completely dissolved), they make plans (duvall is in the process of being rebuilt). he comes to, the party is split and they came here mostly for his painting, so of course he’s not in the group to rescue chine, but he’d been so looking forward to finally having some time together when he found out the whole party was going to sapodilla... 

he’d been too tired in blackwick to seek them out, and then the egg was stolen, and so much (so much) has happened.. and chine might be dead in a dungeon while he looks for a painting, but the cards have been dealt, and anyway, maybe he’s dead too (only a few hours ago he was nothing - when the bees built him did they bring him back? if you’re not the same person you were when you did the thing, is your memory of it real?)
