I'm so interested by the implications of the phrase "the American and European shift from having meat as a side to a main dish." like what? meat hasn't always been a dietary main?
It has not!
For much of history worldwide, the “staple grain” of an area (usually wheat, rice, or corn, although there are others) has been the main component of food in that area, with vegetables for flavor and filling and meat on the side or as a small component of the dish. And this actually makes a lot of sense if you consider that Gertrude the peasant in 1362 couldn’t just walk down to Ye Olde Wallmarte and pick up a nice sirloin—even if there was a butcher shop in town, she probably couldn’t afford it. The meat in her diet would’ve been stuff like squirrels or crows she managed to catch and kill in her vegetable garden. Maybe, MAYBE once or twice a year she could afford to get a leg of mutton or a goose. Gertrude the Peasant would look at a modern-day American barbecue and assume its hosts were royalty. All that meat? Spices? SALT? (Salt was actually stupidly rare in the Middle Ages because of how difficult it was to mine. The table shaker in your cabinet is more salt than a Middle Ages peasant would likely consume in their entire life.)
Vegetables, meanwhile, are relatively easy to store when you don’t have refrigeration. Beans, peas, and corn can all be dried. Gourds, potatoes, and turnips can last for MONTHS in a cold cellar. Starting in 1809, you could can your fruit and veggies in glass jars. But meat? Either you had to eat it fresh, or you had to go to some serious labor to preserve it—smoking, drying, packing in salt, that kind of thing. It just wasn’t feasible for most people.
On top of that, raising meat properly is expensive. Let’s take a chicken, which is actually relatively economical. You need a coop, which you’ll have to keep clean—every once in awhile you have to literally clean the shit out of it. (Makes good fertilizer, though.) The coop needs to be built securely enough to keep out foxes, raccoons, wild dogs, and snakes. You need an outdoor pen of some kind, because chickens are dumb and absolutely will run off if allowed to do so. The chickens will happily forage here for bugs, but you’re probably going to want to supplement their bugs with feed. You’ll also need straw for bedding, which means either threshing and drying grass or wheat yourself or purchasing it from someone else (don’t forget, you have to do all of this by hand because the only automated machine to really have been invented yet is the water mill). And you need the SPACE for all this, and all of this is before your hens have laid a single egg.
Your hens provide the eggs you use for bread, filler in soup, maybe just poached or boiled as a meal. And they do so in perpetuity for several years. You’re not going to kill one for a meal on a whim—you’re only going to do it if they become a danger to your other chickens or if they stop laying, because otherwise you’re giving up years’ worth of food security for one meal. Same with goats and cows—they’re worth more to you alive and making milk (and babies you can sell at market) than they are dead.
So for a very long time, meat was prohibitively expensive and difficult to get. It was eaten in small quantities, and not for most meals, either. The places this wouldn’t have been true—Arctic and subarctic indigenous tribes, for example—would have been the exception, not the rule. Meat-heavy diets in most of the world came about as a result of industrialization and refrigeration.

Hey! Hope you don't mind me requesting about the bonten trio (could be individually or poly, your choice) suddenly turning into cats after our reader here accidentally spilled this drug she bought online that was said to keep people stunned, which would be perfect for her future missions, it sure did stun people but she didn't know that it'll turn people into cats.
Mikey had you taking care of them since it's your fault lmao
The drug lasted for 4 days but when they finally turned back to normal, the cat ears and tails remain with the addition of them being extremely needy like cats in heat, and now you're required to take care of their... Needs. (The smut part but you don't have to make it if you don't wanna)
Is this weird? Omg ⊙﹏⊙
Anyways have a good day!
A/N: Hello darling!! I haven’t written a (semi) hybrid type before … I did my best (TT.TT). Also I hope you don’t mind, I change a small part of your request but it should still follow what you are asking for.

Being in Mikey’s office is unusually chilly, not because it’s cold but because of how cold and empty his eyes stare into yours. The type of stare that sends chills up and down your spine and the hair on the back of your neck stands tall. His poker face is unreadable. You have no idea what he is thinking and deep down, it scares the shit out of you. The longer he watches you, the harder your heart pounds against your chest.
There is a light nudge against your bosom, your eyes glance downwards to find one of three small cats you’re holding in your arms, look at you and purr. The small cats you have in your arms are very unique and can’t be found in any pet store. Not even the black market would they have them.  The one that is nudging you has long purple and black fur. The one in the middle has short purple and black fur and is snuggling against your sternum. The last cat has long pink fur and earrings on his tiny, pointed ears. He meows to grab Mikey’s attention.
“...How?” Mikey finally breaks the silence, you take a big gulp before proceeding with caution.
“Well …”
[Flashback]
“I think this is the end for me… I’m dying.” Sanzu laid on the cold hardwood floor with an awful hangover. Last night, the Bonten Trio and you went club hopping. A lot of drinking, smoking, and taking ecstasy took place. In the early hours of the morning, you all decided to crash at your apartment since it was the closest.
“I feel sick.” Rin was nauseated and sweating profusely. He began regretting taking so many shots while rolling. Except doing the body shot with you. Ran had double vision. The room was spinning and it seemed like there were clones of everyone in the room.
“We should get some Ochazuke.” You suggested. You were the only one that opted out of taking molly. Your throat was dried from singing, cheering, shouting, and dehydration though. (Ochazuke is a bowl of rice with assorted toppings and the soup base can either be green tea or broth. Good for hangovers.) They all murmured in agreement to have it delivered to your apartment. You tumbled toward your bedroom to find your cell phone and place the order.
“Fuck, I need some antacid.” Sanzu struggled getting up to find some tablets to help with his upset stomach. His droopy eyes saw a bottle on your counter, “Oh here it is…” He picked up the bottle and uncapped it.
“Give us one too.” Rin tiredly lifted himself up, Sanzu gave him two tablets and Rin crawled across the room to hand one to his big brother. The three of them plopped it in their mouths and swallowed it.
“Something… doesn’t feel right.” Ran sat up from the couch, there was definitely something wrong with his body.
“Yeah… the fuck was in that antacid.” Both Rin and Ran staggered toward Sanzu, snatching the bottle from his hand to read. His eyes bulged out, “The fuck, Sanzu?! This isn’t antacid you dumb-” The Bonten Trio all dropped to the ground, the bottle in Rin’s hand spilled the pills on the floor.
“What are you guys-?” Your eyes widened at the scene, instantly sobering up, “Oh, what the fuck?!” You ran over to Ran first as he is the closest, you checked his pulse to find him still alive and breathing normally. Then you checked both Sanzu and Rin to confirm they are fine. You saw the spilled content on the floor, wondering what they took. You picked up the bottle from Rin’s hand. “Oh SHIT.” They took a pill from your online purchase that is supposed to temporarily stunned people. “Okay… no need to panic.” You gave yourself a pep talk, “They will be okay. What’s the worst thing that can happen?”
Then the worst thing that happened.
POOF! 🌫 POOF! 🌫POOF! 🌫
“WHAT IN THE NAME IN HELL IS HAPPENING?!” The sudden explosion of smoke startled you and you started coughing, trying to fan out the smoke. Once it was cleared up, something strange happened. Bonten Trio’s bodies disappeared but their clothes remained on the floor. “Where-where did they go?!” Your mind was thrown in a loop of panic and confusion, thinking you had accidentally taken out Bonten’s no. 2 and two important executives.
“Meow?” Your ears perked up. Was that the sound of a cat? More meowing surrounded the room. Looking down for the source of the sound, you thought you were hallucinating. Three small cats coming out of the clothes, one pink and two black and purple cats.
“What-what? What the fuck is this…?” The small cats appeared to be confused as well, “Ran…? Rin? Sanzu?” They all looked up at you, responding to your call, “Oh. My. God.” You placed both hands on your mouth in shock, “You guys turned into cats!” You snatched the pill bottle from the floor again to look at the warning label, in very small block letters … it mentioned this will turn the user into a cat… “WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD THEY PRINT THIS IN SMALL BLOCK LETTERS?!”
[End Flashback]
“I called the company threatening to kill every single one of them… and then I came here.” You finish telling your story to Mikey of what happened while petting Ran’s head on your lap. Rin is laying on your shoulder, snuggling into the crook of your neck. Sanzu is on Mikey’s lap purring while Mikey is surprisingly petting Sanzu’s head. “They said they should return back to normal in four days.”
“I see…” Mikey continues to pet Sanzu with a poker face. You are uncertain if he is planning your demise or torturing you for turning his top men into cats. His dark orbs are now staring in your direction. “You’re off from missions until further notice.” You gulp nervously. Rin licks your neck in comfort. “You will be taking care of them and keeping them safe. You’re dismissed.”
“Yes, Mikey.” You gather Rin, Ran, and Sanzu into your arms and walk out of Mikey’s office. You let out a deep sigh, they start wiggling around in your arms, giving you their big cat wide eye looks. “Okay, I will have to take care of you guys… how hard can it be?”
You spoke… way too soon. THESE BOYS WERE TROUBLEMAKERS.
Rin was the calmest cat between the three, but he does have zoomies in the random hours of the night, frequently pouncing (lovingly surprise attack) you, and gave you the most evil look when he wants you to pay attention to him. Ran wasn’t that terrible, he is normally sleeping underneath the sun rays with his feet up in the air (which you found adorable and discreetly took photos). Completely relaxed. He has a mischievous side though. He would sneak in the bathroom to watch you shower or change, constantly making biscuits and snuggling against your breasts. Sometimes you would find him in your panty drawer too, sleeping on top of your undergarments. Sanzu… was the worst one of the three. It was like he purposely torments you. Climbing on top of cabinets and pushing items off with an evil smile. He pees on all your furniture AND your closet while staring at you dead in the eyes. Every time you try picking him up, he scratches you or bites you.
Four days was too long.
You practically beg them to be good on the last day, luckily they comply. It’s a peaceful last day. They all snuggle up with you on your bed and you can feel their warmth from sleeping underneath the sun. It is the perfect ending… As you sleep, you begin having vivid dreams. Pleasure rolls over your body and you sigh contently. Soon it begins to feel too real. You slowly flutter your eyes open, am I still dreaming?
Ran, Rin, and Sanzu are somewhat back to normal, completely naked but their cat ears and tails remain. Your tank top was lifted, your bare tits are being groped and licked by both Ran and Sanzu. Rin is straddling you, rubbing his raw cock against your clothed pussy. “Wha-what are you guys doing?” They continue with their task at hand as if in trance, not hearing your question. You try to pry them off of you but Sanzu grabs hold of both your wrists and  holds it above your head.
“[Y/n] …” Sanzu licks your wrist up to your fingers and then sucks them while his lustful eyes gaze into yours.
“Sanzu, why are you doing this?” You try not to moan but your hips thrusts forward, betraying you. The way he sucks on your fingers is too erotic.
“We can’t help it… it’s too much.” Ran’s purple hues are now looking at yours, they are glossy and his mouth is practically drooling over your nipple.
“What’s too much?” You ask breathlessly.
“Need to breed you.” Rin’s downturned eyes are feverish, not slowing down his humping. “Wanna feel your warmth. Please…”
“We wanna feel you.” Sanzu’s tail slithers back and forth on your stomach, pleading to touch you even more. The movement is so deviously smooth and titillating, it makes your eyes flutter.
“We promise we will make you feel good.” Ran continues to play with your nipple with his fingers, tugging at it as he kisses up towards your collarbone. “Let us breed you.” Your eyes widen, you never crossed this far in line with your coworkers before.
“No-no. I can’t do that.” You try to get away from them but they firmly hold you down in place.
“[Y/n], you promised us!” Rin’s needy tone surprises you, you never heard him like that before.
Sanzu leans down and talks huskily into your ear. “Mikey said you have to take care of us.” He moves down to bite your shoulder and you let out a whimper, wanting more.
“So you need to take care of our needs.” Ran licks on the side of your face, reminding you that Mikey did say you have take care of them. Letting out a sigh, you lift your hands, caressing both Ran’s and Sanzu’s cheek. Their cheeks are so warm.
“Just… just this once.” Ran and Sanzu practically rip your tank top off with their long nails, while Rin grips your booty shorts and panties and yanks it off in one fluid motion. You barely have time to blink before you're put into a kneeling position in the middle of the bed. Rin in front, Sanzu behind, and Ran is standing in front of you with his hung cock in your face.
“[Y/n], please touch me…” Ran begs you while stroking his hard cock. You grab his length and slowly stroke it. It is thick, you’re uncertain if it can fit in your mouth. Rin rubs his tip against your wet folds before sinking into you.
“Ah!” You are surprised how big Rin is. You hold onto his shoulders to keep from losing balance, your body shaking hard from the pleasure. Ran sees his chance to shove his cock into your mouth mid-moan. He moans, feeling the vibrations of your moans on his cock. The sensation was overwhelming. He grips your hair, pulling himself further into your mouth.
“Feel so good. So warm.” Rin fucks into you in hard and deep, making you moan louder into Ran’s cock. The fit is so tight, it’s like a vise grip on his cock.
“Good girl.” Ran uses his tail to wrap around your throat while thrusting, making your jaw go slack. Drool drips down your chest. Sanzu rubs your wetness from underneath, stroking Rin in the process. You shudder hard when they moan in unison. It was music to your ears. Sanzu runs his pulsing cock under the three of you, coating his shaft in your wetness. He then pushes his cock into your puckered hole. You nearly scream from the pain.
“Shh. Shh. It’s okay.” Sanzu coos while having his tail stroke your face to help relax you. “I promise it will feel good.” He plays with your nipples, pulling and tweaking them while Rin reaches his hand down to play with your clit to help relax you. Sanzu inches his dick slowly, trying to go deeper. “Such a good girl.” He praises you, voice low and husky until he bottoms out. He waits patiently, leaving open mouth kisses all over your back. “So tight. I can almost cum instantly.” He licks your ear before biting it. “Can I please move now?” His voice strains with neediness. You nod, giving him consent.
Sanzu pulls back out then slams into you, Rin and Ran follow the same rhythm. The intensity and pleasure makes Rin even more needy. Seeing how unfocused Sanzu’s expression is, Rin reaches out to tug his hair and slams his lips onto his. Sanzu immediately reciprocates, gripping Rin’s jaw. Their tongues dance with each other. It gets sloppier. Drool drips from both of their swollen lips. Your mind is going blank causing your vision to get blurry. You lift your hand to play with Ran’s balls, squeezing them and earn a purr from him.
“Fuck baby, please do it again.” He begs you. Rin is now busily licking, sucking, and biting your now red tits. Marking you. Seeing how fucked out you are, makes him even more feral. He roughly fucks you harder, getting closer to ejaculation.
“S’close. S’close.” He repeatedly announced, his thrusts are getting sloppier by the second.
“Me too.” Sanzu says breathily, continuously rutting his dick into your asshole.
“I’m cummin’!” Ran goes deeper into your throat, letting out a deep moan. You gag but he holds your head firm, shooting his warm cum down your throat, forcing you to drink it all. Rin is next to shoot his cum into your cunt and Sanzu follows. The immense amount of throbbing cocks cumming inside of you, pulls you over. You convulse violently through your intense orgasm, holding onto Rin’s shoulders again.  You went limp in Sanzu’s arms, trying to catch your breath. The boys are snickering at your jelly form, sprawling over them.
“We’re not done with you yet.” Sanzu grips your jaw and kisses your cheek.
“Rinnie, you can’t keep hogging her. It’s my turn next.” Rin reluctantly removes his cock from your soaking pussy and lets his older brother replace him.
It’s only for just one night, right?

Sent out a cookbook, grabbed a rotisserie chicken from the market to turn into big soup, came home and turned some leftovers into tuna rice bowls with a marinated egg, did dishes, started softening butter for more sugarplum thumbprint cookies, stripped the chicken and saved the meat + started the chicken bone broth with taiwanese sea salt, ginger, dried dates, and goji berries, then made some ginger pickled carrot slaw, and made another small batch of marinated eggs! Very proud of myself, feeling busy but not in a futile distracted way but more like I'm taking care of future me with lots of care and zest!!!!

Fluffy idea, PLA Ingo get surprised by his partner and brother by them making him with homemade Hisuian food from an old recipe book that had recently been deciphered.
cw: fluff
You squinted at the recipe intently. While you had been there yourself, you did not necessarily eat a lot of food that the clans engaged with. Irida and Adaman would have happily had you over, but you rarely found yourself caught at their settlements during meal times. Especially Irida's, unfortunately. Which meant you never really enjoyed the food that Ingo had during his time in Hisui.
Well, you might have tried a few of their dishes by proxy through Ingo when he cooked for you, but it was difficult to recall everything he put into it from memory. You could ask the man himself, you supposed, but that would ruin the surprise. “… Do you think I can get Stantler soup bones here?” you asked Emmet, who was sitting at the table and playing with a Joltik. He turned to you with a confused expression.
“That would be import,” he shook his head, “Verrrry expensive! Use Sawsbuck.” That may have been a good idea if you were trying not to recreate flavour as much as possible. The grassy undertones that Sawsbuck flavoured things tended to have would not be the same. You sighed.
“I'm trying to surprise Ingo with a recipe from this apparent Pearl Clan piece,” you held out your phone for him to see, “… I think Ingo misses some of the flavours from Hisui.” Emmet's brows furrowed at the mention of the place he claimed stole his brother from him. Though, he did look at you with a pout.
“… I think there's a Sinnohan market in Castelia,” he sighed, “They may have some of this stuff there.” You grinned at him brightly. He stood up and crossed his arms. “I will go with you,” Emmet said, “Brother is busy with some work today.” You giggled at him.
~
The stew was fascinating, you found. It certainly was something that Ingo had made for you sometime in your stays with him. Just the smell of the stock alone was a blast from the wilds of Hisui. Emmet watched you cut up meat curiously. You had an idea. “Hey, could you cut the greens for me?” you motioned to the mountain vegetables separated out on the counter, “I won't need to add them until the meat cooks, but it'll take a bit to do the cutting itself.” He titled his head, but immediately hopped to it. You knew his cooking skills were not exactly comparable to his brother's own, but he quickly chopped the greens to the best of his abilities.
Your guess about the cooking time had been correct, so you quickly added the greens to the stew to let it cook away into the flavour. Emmet hummed as he watched across from you. “I thought you removed the scum from the meat,” he asked.
“Ingo never did back then, so I think that's just how you do it,” you replied. He hummed and nodded. The next step was to wait for everything to soften and then add some animal fats with a bit of salt. Lastly, serving with some dried kelp sprinkled a top it. Emmet hummed as you placed the bowls on the table. You both sighed at the scent of the food. It was an easier meal than some of the other things you had attempted to prepare in the past for Ingo.
It was hard to resist sneaking some to eat, but you had to wait for Ingo. Emmet's attempts were thwarted by giving him some sweets. It felt like forever, but it was truly more akin to fifteen. The door opened and you both jumped up from the surprise. Ingo walked in as he normally did but was startled as you both rushed toward him. His tired eyes lit up a bit. You grabbed his hands while Emmet took a step back.
“Try this,” you demanded as you dragged him to the table. The soup still steamed in as he sat behind. His nose twitched a few times and his eyebrows furrowed together. Emmet watched the scene curiously as he brought the spoon to his lips to try it. You both gazed at each other as he hummed in contentment. A giggle came from you as he turned to look at you with a small smile on his face.
“I haven't had this in a while… I was just thinking about making it, too,” he spoke with a soft tone, “It seems like you roped my brother into cooking with you, too.” Emmet laughed at that.
“They were pretty demanding,” the younger twin took a seat beside his brother, “We had to go to Castelia to get these ingredients.” Ingo chuckled a bit. You joined them both at the table with your hand grasping Ingo's own.
“I wanted to make it as authentically as I could without going all the way to Sinnoh,” you smiled at him. Ingo returned the gesture sweetly, hand grasping yours warmly. “There was a recently deciphered cookbook from the Pearl Clan, so I managed to get all the ingredients from that,” you pulled out your phone to show him it. He was stunned at the pictures of the actual book and the translation in Galarian.
“So that's how they translated that, interesting…” he gently took your phone to read it, “Ah, send me the link. I'd love to read this myself.” You nodded.
The stew was thoroughly enjoyed by the three of you.
~
Emmet has slunk off to his room, leaving you alone on the couch with your boyfriend watching some television blankly. His hand held your shoulder softly as he pressed you against his hardened chest. You loved the late cuddles with him endlessly. Resting against him, you nuzzled your cheek into him deeper.
“Thank you, dearest… Sincerely, I am ever so grateful to have someone as loving as you in my life,” he sighed and pressed a kiss to your head. You hummed happily. There was no need for thanks. It was more than enough to see him happy.
“I think that was Irida's handwriting,” Ingo said suddenly, “… She and Calaba are who taught me that recipe.” You felt a pang in your heart. As nice as it was to be home, it was difficult to remember that everyone from Hisui was no longer among you in the present period.
“Maybe she wanted you to find it again,” you joked, “She did always try to steal some of your cooking when you made food in the settlement.” He gave a light laugh at the memory. His hand softened as he gazed at Emmet's bedroom door.
“… I wonder if she wanted me to share it with the people I know here,” Ingo wondered aloud, “Emmet did enjoy it despite it being different from his normal tastes.” You laughed at his genuine surprise about it being good. It was also funny watching him attempt to down the entire bowl of stew. Another kiss was pressed to your temple as he buried his face into your nape. “Let's make it together next time…” he asked with a deep voice, “Just the two of us.”
You smiled and nodded.

jade leech and the market soup
HELLO I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT ANOTHER MUSHROOM FROM THIS EVENT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so i looked up "red brown human ear mushroom" and the wood ear mushroom appeared!!
Tumblr media
apparently they have a texture thats similar to jelly, but they work well with soups, salads, and dumpling recipes!!
ofc, they're dried for some of those recipes, and its highly recommended that you cook them first. they taste earthy and mild and apparently do not have much of a flavor on their own, but are good for soaking up the other flavors in the soup/dish they're in. kinda reminds me of rice or tofu!!
they grow on decaying trees in humid & temperate forests.
this event needs to stop giving me weird plants & mushrooms to talk about because im not going to shut up.
and by that of course i mean that they should not stop. because mushrooms are cool and jade leech deserves the hype.

hi hi, i'm currently homeless and trying to eat more vegan food (or rather, less non-vegan food)-- do you know of anything warm that could conceivably be made in a microwave that isn't largely expensive frozen foods or those red bean and rice packets? my go-to lately has been microwaved scrambled eggs, but i really don't want to rely on animal products. thank you either way 💛
helloo. first of all, if the ethics of veganism are on your mind, honestly, just do your best. veganism is about doing as much as you're practically able to do in your situation. my family and I were homeless for a stretch of time when I was growing up, and it wasn't until that situation was over that I had the liberty (i.e. mental bandwidth) to be so choosy about what I ate (granted, this was before veganism became popular at all. we were "crazy" for being vegetarian already).
but secondly, I would suggest mostly going for canned food, cup noodles & sandwich items. also, oatmeal/porridge if you're into hot cereal. those usually make the most sense to rely on. a canned soup + microwavable rice + your favorite spice blend could, I hope, be a fairly easy go-to in your situation. (rely on complex carbs: rice, bread, beans, oats, pasta, tortillas, and potatoes/sweet potatoes/cassava/etc). and tea is nice for keeping warm and your tummy full when your meals are a little scanty. hydration, in general, is good if you're able to keep on top of.
last thing, if you're able, try to keep incorporating some fresh or dried fruit, veggies, and herbs from time to time. I remember super craving fresh food. your health can really take an impact without it. you could even stop by farmer's markets towards closing hours to get a good deal or shop the produce in stores that are marked down for "imperfections." bananas, leafy greens, tomatoes, raisins, baby carrots, celery, kiwis, parsley, sweet potatoes, frozen berries...get something. ethnic markets tend to have better prices on produce than supermarkets, for the record. foraging is also a way to acquire free food (even if you can't find that much). enough pine needles to make a tea, enough mulberries to make a snack of, or enough dandelion blossoms & leaves to garnish a meal is better than nothing when it comes to getting more nourishment into your body.
best of luck, anon. I hope lots of unexpected sweet times are in store for you💚☺️

For the first time in his life, Ed could really and truly relax. Stede made their home feel safe, and Ed enjoyed building it with him. In the past, Ed had never allowed himself to be surrounded by comforts, save for his brief time with Stede on the Revenge before the abandonment and the darkest time in Ed's life. But now their home was filled with nothing but comforts. Plush rugs you could sink your toes into, squishy throw pillows, soft sheets, soft clothing, and silly romance novels Ed enjoyed reading in his free time.
Their home was also filled with food. With the bit of treasure they'd taken from the ship, going to the market to buy food was no big deal. Ed was also improving at fishing, and brought home dinner himself many nights. Stede would go to the bakery almost every day, and return with freshly baked treats for them both. And at night, Ed slept like a baby, under a soft heavy blanket and with Stede spooning him.
There was a change that happened slowly. Slowly enough that Ed didn't notice it until it suddenly hit him all at once. He was getting pudgy. One morning he was getting dressed, and his favorite plum-colored pants bit into his tummy something awful when he got them buttoned up. He went to look at himself in profile in the mirror, and his eyes bulged at the sight. A chubby belly was muffining over the waistband, like dough trying to escape from a too-small bowl.
For the first time in months, Ed panicked.
He knew he was over-reacting, which just made it worse. He crawled into the bed, pulled the blankets up over his head, and got into the fetal position. He didn't undo the pants at all, and felt how mercilessly they pressed into his soft belly, a constant, tight reminder of what he did to himself.
Fat greedy pig. He didn't deserve 3 meals a day. He didn't know why Stede thought he did. 3 meals a day were for rich people, good people, and all the types of people he was not. He should consider himself lucky to get hardtack and dried meat once a day.
He had stopped having nightmares about his time in Hornigold's ship years and years ago. He laughed it off now, those old days back when he and Jack were paying their dues. But maybe his recent purgatorial encounter with him unlocked some old memories. Ben in his head tried to feed him soup. Hornigold from his past screamed at anyone who vocalized hunger pains, and reminded them all that they were unworthy rats who were lucky they didn't get crumbs from the floor. And if he was only verbally abusive that day, that was a good day. Often times he'd get the cat-o-nine tails and make a show. He was completely sadistic. Ed managed to avoid the worst of it. He was still alive, after all. He was already used to being hungry. His father drank away money that should've gone to feeding him. And he was quick and smart and light on his feet. He kept his head down. And he was just an unworthy dog.
An unworthy dog who was now eating like a king, with snacks between meals, multiple pastries a day, and growing fat off it. He suddenly felt nauseous, and curled up around himself tighter.
"Darling?" Stede called, entering their bedroom. "Edward, are you still asleep? There's a chili festival in town today, remember?"
He walked over to the lump on the bed, and noticed it was shivering. He slowly pulled down the blanket and found Ed tear-stained and red in the face.
"Edward!" Stede cried out, horrified. "Are you alright? Did you have a nightmare? What can I do?"
"I'm sorry," Ed sniffled. "I'm fat."
"You're not fat."
"I'm getting fat. I have to stop this, I have to lose it--"
"Why?" Stede asked gently.
Ed opened his mouth, and then closed it again, realizing any words about to come out of his mouth were straight from Hornigold, and he didn't want to repeat the awful things that man said.
"Don't deserve it," he whispered eventually.
"Can I touch you, dear?" Stede asked softly.
Ed nodded, and Stede put his hand on Ed's shoulder and rubbed it gently. "Of course you deserve it, love. You've lead such a tough life. You deserve lots of good food and to put on a bit of happy weight more than me, that's for sure."
Ed's eyes flicked to Stede's belly, which was, in fairness, basically right next to his face. It rested ever so slightly in his lap. Stede was so warm and soft, so him gaining a bit of retirement weight made sense. Stede had been slightly pudgier when they met than he was when they reunited, so it felt right to see him fill out again. He liked it on Stede. But for himself?
"I'm being greedy," Ed said. "And I don't deserve it. I'm just being a fucking pig--"
"Ed, please," Stede pleaded gently. "What brought this all on?"
"You're gonna think I'm stupid... but I just noticed..."
"I don't think you're stupid. I only really noticed it recently too. My pants are starting to fight with me," Stede said, laughing it off. "It happened slowly. We see each other and ourselves every day. It makes sense that we both missed it until it suddenly clicked."
Ed nodded. "And... I was thinking about... Hornigold... the old days. He never fed us enough. Izzy used to scoff at any sort of sweet purchase. He said it was impulsive and wasteful and that money could be better spent on actual food. And he was right--"
"Look, keeping the crew fed with proper food is important, but dessert is important to. It keeps the crew happy. It makes you happy. And you're not the kind of person to spend all your money on cake and leave nothing for meat and bread and such. I'm sure whatever you wanted was more than reasonable, and Izzy was just being... Izzy-like," Stede said.
Ed didn't respond to that. He let out a small sigh as he felt his body come down from its sudden panic.
"Do you think I'm ugly?"
"What? No! I could never think you're ugly, Ed. Do... do you think I'm ugly now that I've... put on a few?" Stede said, his bravado and confidence turning to anxiety and shame shockingly quickly.
"No," Ed replied, reaching out and putting a hand on Stede's thigh. "I like it. You look soft and happy. Like you're s'posed to be. It's nice to cuddle and squish and... I just like it on you."
"Well, I like it on you. You look safe, and happy, and relaxed. I noticed that whenever you eat a pastry, you do this cute little wiggle in your hips, and you look so happy. I like how it's visible proof that you're safe. That you can be soft, and you never have to worry about being hard again. And... it's very pretty, dear. It suits you very well."
Ed sat up and leaned his head on Stede's shoulder.
"Thank you."
"You're precious, and you deserve to eat whatever you want. And I'm your boyfriend who deserves to spoil you rotten. And if you get a little pudgy, that's ok, great even, if it means you're happy."
"Even if... I keep getting chubbier?"
"You can get as chubby as you want, Ed. I will love you just the same."
Ed put his arms around Stede, and Stede hugged him back.
Stede would never lie to him. Ed knew this from experience, and Stede had even said so explicitly multiple times. Which meant it really was alright that he was growing soft, and might keep growing softer, and that he wasn't a greedy pig for eating 3 square meals plus snacks and dessert, and that he wasn't an unworthy rat who deserved to starve.
Stede and Ed had exchanged a lot of stories of their childhoods and youths by this point, a lot of which were usually responded to with: "That's absolutely awful, you didn't deserve any of that." Ed was absolutely sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Stede didn't deserve the torture he was put through as a child by the hands of his fellow students. He didn't deserve a cold, unloving father, who called him a soft and weak spoiled brat. He didn't deserve any of that.
So Ed didn't deserve to have a father who drank and screamed and threw things and hit. He didn't deserve to spend years toiling away for Hornigold, with Jack as his only point of comfort. He didn't deserve the way Izzy treated him, as if his interests were stupid and he wasn't tough enough to keep being Blackbeard.
Ed deserves this. Ed deserves happiness.
"Let's get up," Ed said softly. "We need to eat breakfast. And maybe hit the tailor's before going to the chili festival," he said with a chuckle.
Stede chuckled with him. "Sounds like a perfect day."

Monster March 2024- Day 18- Merperson
Tumblr media
I know, I know, I thought I was gonna do more micro-mermaids too. But then Selkies and Polarbear Onikuma? Couldn't resist.
As always, thanks to @borealwrites for their Monster March 2024 Prompt List.
Monster March 2024- Day 18- Merperson
Selkie and Onikuma
Meneah pulled her own sled into the polar market and shoved her hood back before she came over to the booth she had rented out here and began to put up her wares and unpack her sled before more still came, others came with fresh whale meat and blubber as she was eager to trade her carved shell jewelry for a good hunk of it, complete with skin that she would add to her boots as she took her ulu and shaved the skin off and set it aside before she used her ulu to cut up the hunks of fat into small pieces and added them to her other wise- nearly empty fat jar as she was relieved she had gotten enough to nearly fill it to the top and the fat oil already in it would help render the rest of the fat down into more oil.
She was happy to trade and barter and even give a small carved totem to the market owner to pay for her booth rent along with a stack dried seaweed sheets for soup.
“Here Grandma Naon.” She offered the elderly woman.
“Oh, thank you. I’ve been out of seaweed for a while.” She offered as she was quick to add a few sheets to her pot of soup she was making and put the rest into her special box she kept for seaweed as she was content to continue to sit and stir her pot of water with seaweed and other ingredients.
“My grandson Firen will be going through the trials this year.” She offered.
“Oh? He finally grew out of his cub fur did he?” Meneah asked with a smile.
“It’s about damn time. His father is calling in a fair beauty from another clan for him, she’s supposed to be a blonde kodiak, but he claims he will need to forage for pearls on his trials in the spring to award such a fair beauty.” She answered.
“Well, if he looks for more pearls for his beauty, you send him my way eh?” Meneah offered.
“Oh, I’ll be sure to, once he comes. He’s supposed to come with whale meat for this soup.” She offered as Meneah smiled.
“I’m sure he will Grandma Naon.” Meneah offered before she kissed Grandma Naon on the forehead have her a hug before she left and went back to her booth and sat down and simply waited for others to come into the market that day. It was pretty empty. But Meneah simply took out a shallow bowl and put her little sacks of pearls into it but kept it in her lap while her jewelry hung on a knitted shawl behind her.
Then a commotion came when a huge group of onikuma came in with sleds and sleds of whale meat and whale fat into the market and took up the center of the market as the others came to quickly get the fresh meat and fat- paying higher prices for the fresher meat and fat. Meneah though was just content to watch and wait for the price to go down. Technically, she could wait until the end of the day to buy what she wanted- when the price wouldn’t be so high. She watched on as others came with bones and other- tougher hunks of meat- cut up and put into Grandma Naon’s pots for soup, and even added wood to her fires.
Then, it seemed everyone else came into the market with their goods and wares as Meneah was happy to get more black balm, more tea leaves, more berries, and honey and of course, more breadseed. As she was happy to sell her various pearls of various sizes and colors for it all.
Before she was approached by Naon’s grandson- Firin.
“Hello Firin.” Meneah greeted.
“Hello Meneah, do you have any yellow pearls?” He asked.
“I do.” Meneah smiled as she took her bag of yellow pearls and dumped it into her special bowl before she showed him what she had.
“This is all the yellow ones I have this time.” She offered as he took the bowl and rolled them around in it to see the overall color, shape and size of them.
“How much for all of them?” He asked.
“What can you offer?” She asked.
“I’d give you three handbreadths of meat and two handbreadths of fat and skin.” He offered.
“Deal.” She nodded before he dumped the pearls into his own purse and then left to cut up the whales, using his outstretched hand to measure for her, his outstretched hand much bigger than his own before he came over to drop it off to her.
“Thank you Firin. Grandma Noan told me the good news, congratulations.” Meneah offered.
“Well, it’s not for sure yet. There are many competing for the blonde. And I dare not assume until I hear it from her.” He sheepishly offered as his ears laid back before Meneah simply smiled and reached back and got a purple shell heart pendant and offered it to him.
“Here, it’ll contrast with the yellow pearls. I’m sure she’ll love it.” She offered.
“I…I owe you more meat…” He said as he looked at it but didn’t take it.
“No you don’t. You’re a really good man, who is kind, honest and honorable. She’d be lucky to have you. Take this for her. It’s my congratulations for you both. I’m sure she’ll love it. And you can even add those pearls to it, make it a proper necklace for her.” You offered.
“Could you do that? I’d be afraid I’d crush the pearls.” He offered.
“Sure. Would you sharpen my ulu?” She smiled before he emptied out his pearl purse into her bowl as it seemed he had gotten yellow pearls from everyone today as Meneah smiled and sat down with her pearl needle and got some thread out and began to pierce each pearl and then thread them to a pretty necklace as he took her ulu and resharpened it for her and even got her a bowl of his grandmother’s soup so she’d eat in between working on his necklace as she was happy and content so simply sit, and weave this necklace and add these pearls once she organized them by size and shape and began to sew them on the rest of the day inbetween buying and selling other pieces to the others in the market.
By the end of the day- once everyone had bought and sold what they did, and there was no more buying or selling or eating to be done- he came back to see if she needed any more help with it as she was piercing and threading and tying off the last few pearls.
“Hopefully I’ve made it big enough for her.” Meneah offered hopefully as she used the last of her threads to make this for him.
“I’m sure it will be just fine for her.” He offered happily, pleased that Meneah had worked so hard for it.
“There. What do you think?” Meneah asked as she tied the two ends off and added the last bits of thread to the ends so they would be tied around his betrothed’s neck.
“I hope she likes it as much as I do.” He offered before he traded jar for it.
“What is this?” She asked.
“Bone marrow.” He answered.
“You don’t have to give this for that. It’s a necklace, not a fur coat.” She tried to refuse the jar.
“But if this bone marrow will warm your heart the way your hard work has warmed mine- even though we have yet to even meet this woman, it will be fair.” He insisted before she took it- gratefully.
“Thank you. I hope you will be happy together. And don’t forget, when you go through your trails, if you see my pod’s lights, feel free to escape the trials for a day with me ok? You will always be welcome and find shelter with me and my other podmates ok?” Meneah offered.
“Thank you. I deeply appreciate it.” He offered with a nod.
“You’ll be fine. It’s supposed to be warm this year. Hopefully the trials won’t be too harsh for you.” She offered as she gathered her things back into her sled and then got ready to go before he helped her close up her booth and get everything together, the necklace clutched in his other hand as he saw her off as she left the market, putting her hood back up and walking towards where her pod had their ice igloos as she and her pod mates took up a caravan as they chatted about what they had gotten that day from the market and what they were looking forward to eating first once they returned home as they each used their ice sticks to traverse the path.
“You know. If that blonde ends up not choosing you. I’m sure your father wouldn’t be opposed if you took Meneah or anyone else from her pod.” Noan offered to her grandson as she came up and watched him watch Meneah walk away into the white expanse around them.
“Bears are supposed to eat seals, not marry them.” He repeated- what he had heard too many times from his father.
“Is that so?” She asked as she nodded to the blended families around them.
“She is too kind.” He offered.
“If it wasn’t, he wouldn’t be sending others so far for another onikuma wife for me and my brothers.” He tried to say.
“Eh, your father has many sons. But Meneah is the only girl you’ve ever worked up the courage to talk to, much less do business with. You are good to her and she is good to you and your family, and especially to me. She would be good for you, she would remind you of your claws and teeth. She respects our ways and does what she can to keep herself and her pod on the good side of our community. So many of those who used to call her pod theirs, have settled well here so far. I overheard that she offered you shelter for the trials.” Noan recalled.
“And yet, that is how so many come back from the trials with their selkie mates.” She grinned with a smug smirk.
“My father is sending me in the opposite direction for the trials, for that reason.” He admitted.
“Then I shall have a word with him.” She offered.
“No, grandma, don’t. He will only make things harder for me if you do. I am content to follow his direction.”
“Even if it means your regret and resentment?” She asked.
“It will honor him and our clan’s ways. He says we need to keep one eye on the past and the other on the future.” He insisted.
“Respect means nothing if you’re dead on the ice.” She reminded him.
“Then any affection for Pertalo will keep me warm.” He offered as he still held up the necklace Meneah had made for him before Noan just scuffed and rolled her eyes and shook her head before she called to her family to hurry up and finish off the last of this soup so she could clean her pots.
It took a week to finish getting ready but finally, Firin was ready to go into the trials, his own sled packed with what he needed to survive in the Arctic Tundra for a whole week.
He went in the opposite direction of where he knew Meneah kept her pod and just walked off into the white expanse. Hoping that at least his own blubber would keep him warm if he proved fruitless in his hunting. He had sent the necklace with his father as his token for Pertalo- should she meet with him while he was gone on this quest.
He walked until the sun set and the stars came out as he orientated himself with those and used the Northern Lights to build himself an igloo to save him from the bitter cold wind. He slipped himself into the igloo and practically collapsed onto the snow inside, grateful for the break in bitter cold wind that had practically cut him to the bone.
He continued on until he was all alone on the vast- sheer whiteness. Where the blue skies touched the white ground all around and there was nothing to guide him except his own inner compass as he tried to make sure he orientated himself with the stars. But there was just nothing out here. No game, no way to dig down to see if he was even over land or ice. Just…snow and sky.
And then, the clouds came in. And then he really, felt like he was lost, no way to tell where he was, or where he was going as he had to rely solely on his internal compass for direction.
He could do little but eat snow, but only able to eat so much- and risk getting too cold internally.
Then, he could faintly- smell- food.
He turned and followed his nose. It smelled not only of food, but cooked food! And bread! He smelled bread and cooked food! He felt like he practically ran towards the smell on the wind, even as it blew right into his face, he didn’t care. He was so hungry. He had gone many days since he ate last. And he hungered for more than just snow. He was hungry for meat. He didn’t care if he had to dig through several feet of ice if it meant he could eat meat.
Then, just as the sun set and it was dark, he saw a faint glow! It had to be another selkie pod. He had listened and obeyed his father and gone in the opposite direction but light meant shelter, shelter meant people and the only other beings out here on this bleak snowy landscape were other onikuma and selkies. Surely, a selkie would save him in this hour of need.
However, the light, once he came closer, seemed to vanish on the horizon and he was left to fall to his knees and weep. Even the sled behind him suddenly felt like it weighed twice his own weight. He had lost track of the days and all he could do was just collapse on the ice and snow.
“Meneah, I wish you were here. I wish I would have given you that necklace. Per…pert…fuck her name, I don’t care. I just…I just want you.” He cried because, after going hungry, Meneah was the only thing on his mind.
The snow began to fall and he couldn’t be bothered to even move, as he simply let the snow fall and build around him, letting his tears crust his eyes shut as he soon, cried himself to sleep.
Meanwhile Meneah came back to the market for another market day.
“I nearly missed the market in the snow.” Meneah offered to Noan as she came right to Noan’s booth and put fresh- cleaned mussels into the pot for the broth.
“You didn’t see any sign of Firin did you?” Noan asked worriedly.
“No. I haven’t seen any sign of him at all.” Meneah shook her head.
“Ardguall told him to go in the opposite direction of your pod for his trials. Ardguall doesn’t approve of Firin’s affections for you. Firin wanted to appease his father, but it’s been two weeks. He should have come back by now and if he’s gone for another week, I think Torten will have his head if Firin dies in this trial. I can only hope he’s ok.” Noan offered as she got Meneah a bowl of broth before Meneah practically gulped it down and quickly went over to where Torten was anxiously waiting by the door of the market, seeming to look out over the snow in the direction her husband had sent her son.
“Chefitess Torten.” Meneah greeted.
“Meneah, have you seen Firin?” She asked anxiously.
“No, I haven’t seen him since last market day.” Meneah shook her head no as Torten looked about ready to cry as she anxiously looked about ready to rip someone’s head off too as she looked back out over the horizon.
“Firin has been gone for three weeks. His tracks are long since covered over. I’m afraid that Ardguall sent him in the wrong direction and that he’s lost, or…” Her voice cut off.
“Please, could you find him? At least, make sure he’s ok? Send him home? He’s proven he can be on his own. But I just don’t want him dying, trying to prove himself to his father. Take anything you want from me, take whatever supplies you would need. I just..I can’t lose him like this.” Torten pleaded before Meneah practically gave Torten everything she brought with her to the market and traded it all for food stuffs and supplies for her sled and then quickly went back and filled up her waterskins with all the broth she could before she practically went running out of the market in Firin’s direction. She went as far as she could, as quickly as she could before she started sweating and then had to stop to rest, because sweat killed in the snow as she tried to calm her own racing heart and thoughts and simply prayed for guidance to lead her to Firin.
She put her nose to the wind and tried to smell for anything. But could only smell the market behind her. She continued on, drinking up all but one waterskin of broth as the other began to chill to a chunky slush. She even took a detour home and got her best supplies, her bone marrow, her jars of fat, all of her furs, her breadseed, her tea leaves, her club, her ulu, everything she could think of that she woud need for a great journey to save Firin. Even the magicked ever burning logs. She put out- and took out from her home and packed them with her. She continued inland, just hoping and praying to every god that would listen and answer her to keep Firin alive long enough for her to find him and save him.
She kept going until she was exhausted and had to stop to make shelter in a snowstorm, even though her gut told her that she needed to continue. But she couldn’t help Firin if she too was dead- caught in a blizzard as she made herself a new igloo and even used her special lights to light it up to give her light to make herself food and bread, and even made a hole in the roof so that the smells could leave her place and travel on the wind, and hopefully draw them together. She put out the light and tried to sleep but sleep was alluding her she couldn’t shake the feeling that if she didn’t at least go out and look, one last time, that maybe he was trying to head this way, and couldn’t see her. But was only following his nose to her.
She had to see.
So she got redressed and relit her light and came out of the igloo and looked and saw- another igloo! Just a short ways away! Hopefully that was him!
She ran towards him.
“Firin! Firin!” She yelled, but her voice was drowned out by the wind but she didn’t care she could see two large lumps! That had to be his shelter! She came forward and to her horror, she found that the one lump- was the snow that covered his sled.
“Oh no! No, no, no, no, no, no!” She began to cry as she hurriedly shoved all the snow off and followed the leads to a body in the second lump as she uncovered boots first.
“No! Firin! No!” She cried as she recognized his boots and continued to shove the snow off of him and noticed that the snow had started to melt and then freeze in a little pocket around his chest, so he at least had the room to breathe.
“Firin! Come on! Don’t be dead!” She cried as she damned her tears- breaking off her eyelashes as she continued to uncover him and cried more tears of relief when she saw his chest move with his breath as she continued to uncover him before she got to his face and took the ice off from over his eyes and away from his nose where he was breathing.
“Oh thank the gods. Firin! You’re still alive, come on Firin, wake up, wake up for me. Get up. You need to get up. You need to come with me! Come on!” She begged and pleaded and pushed and pulled before she cut the ties to his sled to free him as she used all of her renewed strength to try to wake him up before he finally awoke from her efforts.
“Maneah?” He breathed when he opened his eyes to see her by his side in the snow.
“Yes! Firin, oh thank the gods I found you! Come on, up, I built an igloo for us, it’s only over there, come on.” She urged him as she helped him up and then led him back to her igloo before she practically pushed him into it herself before she blew fire to partially melt the vent to keep the warm air in and from escaping and to harden the inside to help insulate them inside.
“Come on, you need to warm up, you’re too cold, come on, help me.” She urged as she was quick to try to get his frozen furs off of him as she tried to undo it and push and pull them off and could only cry to see how much weight he had lost, all of his fat reserves were gone, and all he was was skin, fur, bones and very lean muscle now.
“Shit, you’ve lost too much weight, come on, I have some broth, get in my bed, come on, get in my bed and I’ll have you drink some broth and I’ll warm you up ok?” She offered as she gave him- her own sealcoat to put on as she readily moved to her little pot in her igloo and poured him a bowl of broth and then helped him drink it as he collapsed on her bedroll.
“You came for me.” He could only- very tiredly- offer as he looked at her with a faint, exhausted smile.
“Of course I did.” She answered as she helped him to drink sips of the broth in her large abalone shell bowl as she let him drink one bowl at a time, in between getting under the covers and wrapping herself around his core as he could only manage to try to curl his own limbs around her body, as her sealskin covered them both in the bed as his body slowly began to warm before he started to shake as his body finally found it’s will to live.
“It’s gonna be ok. I’m right here, Firin.” Meneah offered as she hugged him and let him settle his head over hers in the blanket as she rubbed her hands vigorously over his back to try to get some heat from the friction of her hands against his fur.
“You came for me.” He repeated in a really shaky breath.
“Of course I came for you Firin. I love you. I’m sorry your father sent you in the wrong direction, so far away.” She confessed.
“I love you too.” He professed as his arms and body shook as he held her as tight as his limbs would let him.
“I’ve…I’ve always loved you, I’m sorry I let my father drive me away from you. I should have been stronger and braver and told him to…fuck himself.” He offered shakily.
“Well you are brave and strong. You’ve survived longer than anyone else would have. And honestly, if he sent you to your death, you can live with me ok? I don’t mind. My home is big enough for a whole family.” She offered as she turned her head and kissed his cheek as he found the strength to try and shakily kiss her back.
“Just focus on getting warmer. That’s all you need to focus on ok? You’re safe now, I’ve got you.” She whispered as she just focused on getting him back to a temperature that was more conducive to live, happy that she got to him in time.

Mum bought this packed box of Brunch on her daily commute to the wet market in Chong Pang. From the left, stir-fried okra with dried chilli for the bit of heat. In the middle are crispy and sweet Butterflied Gangetic Anchovies (Thryssa mystax). To the Malays, it is Ikan Bulu Ayam but us Chinese called it 美人鱼, which means Mermaid in English. Lastly, Cereal Fish (麦片鱼) which has more batter than fish. :(
Tumblr media
She also got a bowl of Pork & Shrimp Dumplings Soup (水饺汤) from Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House to be shared among ourselves. It is always delightful munching on these plump packages of minced pork, shrimps and chives wrapped in wanton skin.

Dragon Age Fanfic Fun, Part 1: Cook Shops
Edit: I realized, oddly enough, that I wrote this with Haven and Skyhold in mind (in short, DAI - probably because that's what I've been replaying as of late, lmao.) I promise I will get around to including how cook shops would operate in places like Kirkwall or Denerim (basically, urban centers)!
This will be part one of a series that was inspired by this video by the Modern Knight, in which I come up with silly little immersive ideas that one can easily add to their Dragon Age fanfic (or perhaps any medieval-themed fic/story) with the Dragon Age/Thedas setting in mind.
I hope to maybe do a series on this, at the very least for my benefit to reference instead of getting lost and forgotten about in a notebook, lmao. So let's begin, below the cut!
Also mild disclaimer, this is not an end-all-be-all where "OMG WHAT IF THIS ISN'T REALISTIC ENOUGH??" or "ACKTUALLY, MEDIEVAL FOOD SELLERS WOULDn't..." - look, at the end of the day this is just fanfic fodder for you and your blorbos, not a history lesson. I'm bound to make an error in judgment or descriptions, don't come at me with pitchforks. 😔
So you're hanging out in Haven or Skyhold. You're building up the Inquisition from the ground up with allies and defense forces - but also the little people to sell their wares (like our favorite Orlesian merchant, Miss Belle), but what about... Food!? Who's feeding everyone!?
Cook shops!
Or, "medieval fast food." These cook shops would be strategically placed where there would be frequent passers-by, such as next to a market square, or a busy gate entrance, and cooked to eat on the go (rather than cook-to-order.) In short, you see a tasty-ass pie, you buy it, and eat it right then and there.
I can also imagine the types of clientele our varied cook shops might have; you have a wide range of people (and pockets), varying from Templars with their income, refugees who may only be able to afford suspicious cuts of meat, or members of the Chantry with specific food preferences.
What sort of food would a cook shop sell?
This is not an exhaustive list of foods a cook shop would sell in Thedas, but perhaps ideas/suggestions you can quickly use. Otherwise, I'd recommend checking out @exhausted-archivist (formally known as @old-archivist) who will easily have a vast list of Thedosian cookery that will tickle your fancy in their Foods of Thedas Masterpost (it will even specify the region in which certain meals come from!)
Also since Haven and Skyhold are Ferelden-based, keep in mind what types of foods/ingredients will be procured/used in the food being sold. There are of course exceptions, such as Belle who was recruited from Orlais, for example (so there is always the possibility of foods outside of Ferelden cuisine.)
Also, cook shops can serve a specific type of food (rather than being a mobile Walmart of sorts.) Personally, I'd be a fan of Pickled Food Merchant... mmm. Pickles.
Boiled roots
Meat/Fish/Vegetable pies
Porridge
Roasts
Sandwiches
Sausages
Fish wraps
Soups/Stews
Nuts
Dried/Cured fruits or meats
Pickled foods
Hardtack
Rations
Edible plants
Desserts
Cheaper cuts of meat
Fried/Buttered foods
There are also ideas from other historical/modern use of foods:
Perpetual stew
Pagpag (though I see this used in more urban areas, such as Kirkwall's Lowtown)
But what about breads and drinks!?
Typically you would go to a baker for breads, or the tavern for drinks. In short, if you wanted to conjure up a meal, you'd have to likely go to different locales/merchants to pick and choose your foods. I feel like maybe bread could be an exception, since I can't imagine a baker really setting up shop in Haven/Skyhold because, well, baking, but this is all fantasy so you know what, fuck it, add your traveling baker!
Alcoholic drinks, of course, would be reserved for taverns. When it comes to non-alcoholic beverages, I'd still suggest sticking with taverns because they have the facilities for storage (casks, wells, tubs, etc.) But, again, have your own traveling wine seller, you do you boo.
Honestly, I like to imagine Haven or Skyhold being way bigger than portrayed in the game, so perhaps there would be room for a complete bakery (I mean, we've got Herald's Rest in Skyhold, so why not?)
Just, uhhhh, I feel bad for those merchants at Haven. Because, you know. Reasons.
What would a cook shop look like?
Since I imagine a cook shop for organizational establishments like the Inquisition, you won't exactly have people selling food right out of their homes (as was done in medieval times), since Haven or Skyhold aren't exactly "towns."
Instead, temporary stalls, huts, or cabins could be used to open and close up (in short, you won't be finding any glass windows or bars to protect products. Rather, there would be a shutter or board of sorts, that goes over the gap where you see the person cooking, which would be lowered during the day (like a table to display food) and then shut up and bolted when closed. The "ovens, and cooking facilities" are placed at the front so you can see the chef cooking, just like at Subway when you watch people make your little dinky sandwich.
Another alternative, you could simply have someone wandering about with a tray of foods they want to sell and yelling at the people of Haven/Skyhold to eat it (think popcorn, and hot dog sellers at baseball games. :)
When vendors sell their food, they may also yell at passersby to eat their products at certain times of the day
Tumblr media
Services
Now this is gonna be fun. You can also have a cook shop that will literally make the food for you if you provide the ingredients (obviously if the merchant has the capability/equipment to do so.) In this case, according to the Modern Knight, ingredients would likely be made into pies or stews (be wary though, as merchants might steal some of the ingredients for themselves. 👀)
Also, how does Haven/Skyhold manage to look so nice when there's waste to be had? There were cesspits or barrels used to take away waste off-site. Also, be wary of hygiene practices; especially when it comes to using spices to cover the taste/look of spoiled food!
Sus Cook Shops
I'll just leave this here, for signs that a cook shop is rather questionable:
Flies
Reheated meats/foods
Foul garnishes
Faking the contents of food (such as using beef and promoting it as venison)
Well, there you have it. A basic gist of cook shops and fast food that you can implement into your DA fic (and maybe even conjure up some OCs!) Feel free to include in the comments/reblogs any other ideas you might have! Thanks for reading!
