ARC Review of Sinfully Tempted by Kathleen Ayers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary:
After being caught in a compromising position with the Duke of Ware, Lady Tamsin Sinclair manages to cling onto what remains of her reputation by agreeing to fake a a short-term relationship with duke. She and Ware will pretend theirs is an intellectual attachment for a few weeks to quiet the gossips, but to her surprise, she begins to fall for the duke...
My review:
I had a lot of fun with this book; Kathleen Ayers loves to write characters with interesting jobs or hobbies, and in this case, the hero, Ware, is an amateur entomologist. As someone who is squeamish around bugs, I thought I'd find it gross or weird, but it actually works! And what more, it works on a romance level— like, Tamsin and Ware's first meeting involves him trying to get a moth off her bare knee without telling he what's going on so she's punching him repeatedly (and then he kisses her thigh?!? bear in mind this is their FIRST MEETING) and they're caught in a compromising position which results in the sham "attachment" they both need to play up to save Tamsin's reputation (and more importantly for Tamsin, save her sister's reputation by proxy). And there's a lot of sly innuendo applied throughout the book related to bugs, and even some pretty damn romantic lines later on. Basically, when Kathleen writes an MC with a hobby, she goes all in.
And here's the thing about Ware: for all that Kathleen (and Tamsin) goes off about how big and awkward he is (sidenote: Ware isn't explicitly written as fat/plus-sized, but he is described as big and has think thighs and a soft stomach), he's actually a REALLY attractive man and when it hits you, it hits. He'll be nattering on about bugs and Tamsin will be snarking about how his hobby involves pinning dead insects into displays and then suddenly he's like "perhaps I'll pin you one day". That single-minded focus he brings to all things really pays off for Tamsin. As for Tamsin, she's an older (well, she's 26 but she's been through it, life-wise), jaded heroine, but she hasn't let society tamp down her spirit. That being said, a lot of the plot is her feeling like she's too improper to be a duchess (her mother was an actress) so she pushes away Ware for a considerable amount of the story until she can't anymore.
The sex:
I really wish there were more sex scenes in this book because what we got was excellent. I will say though, maybe there was merit to them holding off until closer to the end because Tamsin basically had to become half-crazed with longing (to the point where she was driven to drink) in order to admit to herself that she wanted Ware. Here's what I enjoyed most:
a) We love men who attempt to stifle their erection by reciting the Latin names for various insects
b) There was an over-the-clothes stuff moment where Ware is all "we're MORE than a fling bby" and that's always an enjoyable moment for me
c) If you're a fan of the gazebo scene in Bridgerton season 2, you'll love their garden sex scene which had big "don't stop" vibes AND unlike Kate and Anthony, they actually woke up together after falling asleep outside
d) Speaking of Kate and Anthony, there's SNIFFING
e) There is some half-virgin hero rep as well a heroine who is not a virgin
f) The greatest moment might be when he rips her drawers off her and puts them in his pocket while going "you won't be needing these anymore" and then in a scene WE WERE NOT SHOWN, it's insinuated he basically deposited them on her brother's desk and went "well I guess I gotta marry her now". Frankly, this is the one place I felt cheated.
Overall:
I'd recommend this book to any historical romance reader. It has a lot of heart, banter, and a great romance with solid sex scenes, and I look forward to reading the next book in The Five Deadly Sins series.

REVIEW
The Lyon’s First Choice by Sara Adrien
The Lyon’s Den
Rigid rules are not limited to the ton. Shira Liebling and Phil Rosen face the professional rules surrounding their work as doctor and nurse and the rigid beliefs of what is right and wrong in the Jewish community of the era. Ruin for a woman was possible just by being a nurse and marriage between Jews and Gentiles was not allowed…or deeply frowned upon. As Phil and Shira fought to maintain their professional distance while fighting growing attraction, Bessie Dove-Lyon stepped in to give them a nudge.
This book had historical, cultural and medical information that I found interesting and that had me googling Mesmerism, history of c-sections, India, and history of medicine sites. I enjoy books that include history of medicine as both my father and brother have researched various topics related to the field and I, as a nurse, have read about the history of nursing.
This book did not grab me as previous books in this series but did make me curious about other books in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I’m still knee-deep in boxes, with my beloved research books crying out for shelves to house them. I’ve also been writing and struggling to meet deadlines while happily awaiting the birth of our seventh grandchild.…

Guess what this is from lol
It’s four days after Dream had found himself at Hob’s food truck, The White Horse, the earliest he could manage to come back. The day before yesterday he had published a glowing review for it, completely disregarding his former assignment, refusing to give the Magpie any sort of acknowledgement. Then he’d had to answer for that to his editor, who dressed him down until Dream had raised an eyebrow and showed Cornell the statistics for his article, clicks and comments miles above his usual reviews. Cornell had sighed and rolled his eyes, and given him a few days off while he would be drafting out a new strategy. Which was fine by Dream, who had waited for an opportunity to go and see Hob again. And maybe eat some of his food again. Okay, definitely eat some of his food again. Dream’s mouth waters just at the thought of it. He’s here earlier than last time, having found the place easily by looking it up on social media, which it already had a fairly impressive presence on. He also, just in case, marked the spot where he was parked on his GPS.

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by @reallyintoscience & @beatnikfreakiswriting — thank you darklings❤️
Okay, here we go:
1. How many works do you have on A03?
13
2. What's your total A03 word count?
55,019 (I take so much time writing so few words)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The Sandman, WIPS for Hellblazer, The Hour, The Expanse
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Putting Out Fire With Gasoline, Nocturnal emissions, and its sequel License my roving hands (which I WILL finish so help me god), Dream nonsense (my first awkward fic) Defiling the Sublime (my Honk Zone Magnum Opus)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Always! It may take me a REALLY long time, or it may be in seconds. If you ask questions, or write long comments, you will get an essay back! ❤️
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't write whump, MCD, actually unrequited love, love triangles etc. That being said, I love writing angst when I have plans for a happy ending down the road. My angstiest fic would be Disintegration, which made me so sad that I ended it by hinting at a reconciliatory eldritch incubus visitation 🥰
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
The fic that makes ME happiest is Blanket Permission (which I am forever grateful to @quillingwords , for breathing the Purrito into life through her artwork)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No, that’s never happened, thankfully.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Hell yes — the kinkier and more historically overcomplicated, the better. I’m particularly invested in relating the smut to history of sexuality and history in general, as well as folklore and mythology.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have two collaborative cross-overs that have been outlined but not yet written: Moulin Rouge AU with @academicblorbo , and Brideshead Revisited AU with @chaosheadspace and @quillingwords. I also have a Joanna Constantine/Death of the Endless WIP that will to some extent be a Sandman/Hellblazer crossover. Also, I really want to write a dreamling The Boat That Rocked smut fic!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. But Fern-Fevered was included in an anthology, which I will never get over
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have started two, but not yet completed them.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Freddie Lyon / Bel Rowley from The Hour. Will never get over them
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Straight up copying @reallyintoscience ‘s response here: I exist in a state of optimism where I fully believe I will finish the few Sandman WIPs I have going.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Weaponised bathos (trying to make the beautiful slip on banana peel)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing incredibly slowly, Overcomplicating/overdoing historical research. My latest WIP has a full-on bibliography…
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I love peppering in words in other languages related to the plot, as easter eggs to come back to, but I always include translations at the end. I spent an inordinate time trying to translate BDSM terminology into Old Norse for Lullaby, which was frankly such a mad endeavour that it should be mentioned as an example of my writing weaknesses…
19. First fandom you wrote for?
In my head: The Hour. Published online: The Sandman.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Putting Out Fire (With Gasoline) — made infinitely better by @mathomhouse-e ‘s stunning artwork!
Tagging some lovely writers (tagging wildly here, as usual only do it if you have spoons for it):
@imnotcrying-ipromise @im-not-corrupted @hardly-an-escape @honeyteacakes @pellaaearien @karalynlovescake @so-i-grudgingly-joined-this-site @tj-dragonblade @two-hands-toward-the-sun @secondjulia @cuubism @dsudis @delta-pavonis @academicblorbo @valeriianz @gabessquishytum @aeon-of-neon @edgedancer77

Ten books to know me
Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.
I got tagged by my amazing @mathomhouse-e and I am always down to have an excuse to talk about books.
HHhH by Laurent Binet.
Up until 2 years ago, I thought I would never touch anything related to real-life historical events, particularly anything related to WWII. Got burned badly by a historical novel when I was about 15. This book, however was on sale, and I think it is one of the best book-reading decisions I have done in a while. Completely rearranged my understanding of WWII, and also gave enough basis for better understanding of the current events.
2. Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo.
I have lots and lots of gripes with Bardugo writing, but not in this case. Bardugo wove a wonderful story, and I firmly believe it should not be branded as Young Adult. I couldn't put it down, and the story kept me on the edge of my sit.
3. Sherlock Holmes.
Look. It got nothing to do with Sh*rlock BBC. I do, genuinely, love Sherlock Holmes. I love that funky detective dude and his bestie, solving crimes and helping mistreated people out of trouble.
4. The Hunter and the Hunted by Ivan Bahrianyi.
And look, this Ukrainian book has even English translation. The original title actually translates to 'Tigertrappers'. It's an incredible story of man convicted for some bogus crime in USSR, his forced deportation, and the hunt on him. The book has an incredibly strong imagery and the vision of the train full of people compared to an angry dragon has stayed with me over the years, and has infused into my nightmares.
5. Overture: The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
Perhaps to no one's surprise, Sandman is here. The whole comic series has kept me sane this year, but Overutre is especially dear to me.
6. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.
Incredible. Incredible graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi about her experience of growing up in a war-torn Iran. Read it during the lockdown, cried like a bitch. Poignant, important story.
7. Night Watch by Terry Pratchett.
I love Pterry dearly, and I often speak of any given Disc book as 'Oh I love this so much', but when I say that about Night Watch, it means I love it above all else. It is a very personal book, and it is also the only book I took with me when I left Kyiv last year for my then-undetermined exile.
8. The Thirteen's Tale by Diane Setterfield.
I read it years and years ago (my edition says it was published in 2009) and it still stays with me. A haunting story of people slipping through the cracks and weaving their own story.
9. Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett.
Yeah, so I got two Pterry books here, and? I wish I had Tiffany Aching books growing up.
10. I would be a bad Ukrainian if I didn't name
Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko.
What a man. What poetry. He really experienced being a Ukrainian to his fullest, and insane how we still find his words topical, fresh and valuable.
I am tagging @tj-dragonblade @quillingwords @seiya-starsniper from Dreamling Nation, but also @saltforsalt @davinciae and @flaielis

Releases on May 19th
Summary:
Jordan, Earl of Emerson, has inherited an estate bankrupted by his half-brother. Now he owes an enormous debt to a loanshark, and marrying the loanshark's daughter Odessa is the only way the debt will be forgiven. Odessa does not want to marry a suitor of her father's choosing and has gone to great lengths to keep these men at bay. What she doesn't count on is that Jordan is far more clever than the others ever were, and what more, there's a very convenient attraction between them...
My review:
I am a recent Kathleen Ayers fan, so it was interesting to see how this book measured up to others I've read recently. I would say the chemistry and romance aspect of the novel was pretty solid, but there wasn't as much of a plot in comparison. I could be wrong but at a little less than 200 pages, it felt shorter than her other books. The plot can be summed up by Jordan adamantly continuing to court Odessa in order to save his siblings and erase the debt, while Odessa puts on a fat suit and blackens her teeth and eats onions (so many onions) to make herself as unappealing as possible. It's funny for a while until it isn't quite as much.
Jordan is an excellent example of a more jaded, world-weary hero who's not above fighting dirty when needed. The best way to describe Odessa is that in the modern era, she would deffo be a true crime girlie and possibly an occultist. She's probably one of those heroines some readers would find "annoying" but I liked her. You can't help but be sympathetic to a woman who's basically her father's pawn, despite how much she asserts herself or tries to outmaneuver him. I'd say the main draw of this book is the chemistry between Jordan and Odessa which is present from the very beginning despite Odessa's best efforts to make herself as unappealing as possible. It's a large part of what made the book work. Speaking of chemistry—
The sex:
Well done, and despite the length of the book, there were a few solid scenes. Here's what worked for me:
a) Odessa is a Knowing Virgin (thanks Aunt Lottie). Also a Ready Virgin because as Jordan comments she has a... "natural sensuality"? I think is what he said. But basically, she knows what's up and I loved that.
b) This deserves a note of its own: She has a hand fetish (hot) which Jordan quickly clocks and uses on her
c) There is some light choking during their first (proper) kiss. Also, they 100% would have gone all the way in the middle of that party if they wanted which, again, Jordan notes
d) This may be a bit of a spoiler but people in historical romances do..... Stuff in the place they had sex for the first time, but they don't often go all the way (especially because she was a virgin), so I was pleasantly surprised when they did, but also, it tracks for them as a couple.
Overall:
I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, light historical romance that doesn't skimp on the sex. It's also worth noting the book set up Jordan's siblings (the other "Sins" in this series): There's the sister who races horses against men who're partially there to see her in trousers, the brother who's probably a gigolo, another brother who's probably a spy, and their baby sister who's so sweet she deserves a dastardly hero of her own. I'm looking forward to reading all their books.

How about 🤡, ✨, 🎶, and 💖 for the writer asks?
Thanks for the questions @tj-dragonblade!!
🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?
OK, I am going to give two, one recent, one older:
Hob also learned that Dream’s form in the Waking, human though it may appear and human though it might respond to Hob’s touch, was not human at all in its hunger for pleasure. He had seen hints before, in the months since Dream had revealed his true nature to Hob, that the vastness of his being was not always well-contained in human form. This was no different, Dream bleeding away from his humanness the further entangled they became.
The short of it was that, in the shockingly brief time it took his dick to rally an interest in the proceedings again, Hob had been so filled with semen you could have mistaken him for a navy ship. -- from Chapter 3 of high enough (you got me good)
(Context for the next one is that it is an OC of mine, Mett, who is nonbinary and uses primarily he/him pronouns in the Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds universes. This is part of how he and Ash Tyler shack up. They end up in a committed triad with Chris Pike in a 48k+ fic I haven't finished yet. Whee!)
They collapsed on the couch, Ash’s full weight on Mett, who wriggled in delight, a wholly dopey smile on both their faces. Ash sighed, his nose buried in the back of Mett’s neck. “I think that went well.”
Mett giggled and then whimpered as Ash shifted out of him the last bit. He reached back to pat Ash on the hip. “Baby, if you think I am even halfway done with you after that performance…” Mett rolled his hips back and Ash gasped. “I’ve got some of my own tricks. Which I will gladly show you. Once I gather a few more brain cells back together.”
Ash laughed and rubbed his still-hard cock along the crack of Mett’s ass. “I am ready when you are.”
“Jesus. You…” Mett rolled his hips again to confirm. “Fuck, you’re still hard.”
“You’re welcome.”
Mett snorted. After a beat, “Sorry about your shirt.”
“No you’re not.” Ash’s voice was amused and light. “I’m certainly not.”
“Good.” Mett rolled his shoulders back and started to push up. “Gotta pee. Shove off or you’re gonna get wet.”
Ash stood and stretched, hands brushing the ceiling of the room. “Eh, not my kink.”
He felt a hand patting his hip. “We are gonna get along just fine.”
“Because we weren’t already?” Ash quipped... -- from Chapter 2 of Sagitta
(this last one from Sagitta isn't that funny, but it tickles me pink, so there.)
✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉
JFC, I am ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE AT THIS. <Stitch eye-pulling GIF> OK, I am really really fucking happy with how a wrote first-person POV for Hob in i had a dream (i got everything i wanted). That is the first time I have ever felt really PROUD of my own fiction writing.
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
Usually not, although I have a few songs that specifically have inspired (very vaguely) fics. The one I am working on right now has its home in Veruca Salt's Seether, one of my favorite songs of all time.
💖 What made you start writing?
*shakes cane* Back in my day...
No, really, somewhere in the depths of some external hard drive are the fics that I wrote 100% for myself in middle and high school. Never published, ever ever, and will never see the light of day. These were places I explored my identity as bisexual and how I preferred power dynamics in relationships.
I have put fic up on AO3 when I have been truly inspired by some source. Episode 6 of The Sandman absolutely hit that button HARD for me. And then I got into the fandom, my first venture back into fandom since the early MCU, and YOU PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKING SUPPORTIVE AND AMAZING AND IT IS WONDERFUL. There was a HUGE response to my first less than 400 word Dreamling ficlet on AO3 and the Sandfam support just pushed me from there.

@tj-dragonblade Which letter/year is your absolute favorite, published yet or not?
My favorite published letter is the Victorian Smut Letter, because I enjoy the dichotomy of "The Victorians hate sex" and Hob's unabashed (gay) sexual fantasies (185?). The love realization/confession letter is a very close second (178?).
My favorite unpublished letter is 1969. (No irony. Not a joke. Listen)
It has: the moon landing. LSD. Orgy. Bisexuality. Sad Crying Hob. Loves People Hob. Pining Hob. All at once. How can I not love it?
I have no idea when it will publish, but it's one of my favorites. It's so wild. It's so unnecessary. It's everything I imagine Hob to be in the 60s-80s when things were batshit. I love it.
