The Muppet Movie (1979) ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this movie, not one, but two times, about six shotguns are simultaneously pointed at kermit the frog.
Miss piggy slay the house boots down papa I'm deceased.
I'm always worried that older movies will age badly and this one aged gorgeously, save for the confederate flags visible for half a second in the background at the county fair.
The music in this fucks.

I fell in love with these boys. Especially Ronan. I would Kill for a book series about him!!!! (As I'm writing this I go back to see what other books she's written and find this is already a thing. Consider these added to my tbr right away!!)
I still have a lot of questions but I suppose that is the nature of books like this. I almost always feel like I've been in a fever dream when I finish them lol.

the moon represents my heart // pim wangtechawat
first published: 2023 read: 11 january 2024 – 27 january 2024 pages: 492 format: ebook
genres: fiction, adult, literary fiction, asian literature (china/hong kong), family, science fiction (time travel) favourite character(s): can i say all of them? least favourite character(s): see above
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 thoughts: i honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as i did. i didn't expect to be taken in by the beautiful writing, settings and characters, especially given the rather middling rating this has on goodreads. it's a gorgeous story with moving themes of love, grief, family, and the importance of living in the here and now; there were lessons i could take from it personally. each of the four main characters, as well as those we meet along their journeys, were wonderfully crafted, and i felt invested in their stories and glad to go along with them for the ride. i liked how time travel was used, particularly how it manifested differently in and affected characters. i am generally not one for literary fiction or poetry, but i loved the poetic nature of parts of the book and the overall flow of the prose. it's not written in the manner of "my book is so smart and deep and not every understands being deep like i do", which is what tends to turn me off of most lit fic. but TMRMH was deep without needing to be full of itself. it gets its message across because it's accessible.
i thought this was a pretty outstanding debut novel, and i will be keeping an eye out for what else pim wangtechawat publishes. i'm also so excited that i found out this is going to be developed into a TV show (directed and starring the lovely gemma chan), because genuinely the whole time i was like "i would love this as a limited series and i can literally picture it in my head", so i can't wait to hear more about that!

march '24 favs:
• those who leave and those who stay & the story of the lost child ; elena ferrante — the final two books in the neapolitan novels, a tetrology recording the lives of two girls in naples from childhood to old age. gutting, beautiful, layered, and complex. this series is a masterpiece, elena ferrante is everything to me <3 (please read it!!)
• sirens and muses by antonia angress — following an array of characters at an art university as they navigate life, work, academia, relationships, and being an artist in a capitalist world where everything is commodified. the depth of characters paired with the nuanced discussions of art, class, and politics left me so pleasantly surprised. (it's also extremely gay and perfect for all you tumblr users with mummy/daddy issues)

Clare Chambers -> Small Pleasures
I'm warm, its raining lets review this bad boy.
PLEASE LOOK UP A LIST OF CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE READING THIS BOOK JUST INCASE OK THANKS STAY SAFE XX
this book follows a journalist named Jean Swinney in the late 1950 as she investigates a reported case of a virgin birth.
i lent this book to a freind a couple months ago and am yet to get it back which is kinda shame becasue a absolutely loved it and want to reread it.
the only real critique - which isnt really that big of a critiques - is that this book was pretty heavily marketed as an LGBTQ+ book which yeah, it is, but you only really find out within like the last third of the book and it isnt really a focus point of the book as a whole, just felt kinda off.
Aside from that though, i loved this book way more than i expected to, loved the mystery of it and the characters are all likeable. the reveal at the end pulled out an audible gasp from deep within my being.
overall, 4.5 stars :)

The Girl in Red by Christina Henry
Tumblr media
“Do you think I don’t know what kind of men this world has wrought? Every woman knows. And these men existed before everything fell apart.”
A deadly disease has wiped out most of Earth’s population. Instead of going to a quarantine camp, Red travels through the woods for months to get to her grandmothers house. But in the post apocalyptic world, the woods are very dangerous.
This book kept the mystery going until the very end. It also discussed important topics about todays society. Red was a good main character and she kept me invested in her journey. I love retellings, and this one had to be the most unique Little Red Riding Hood retelling I’ve red. Red isn’t just Red Riding Hood, she is also the Huntsman. The story keeps you guessing as it jumps back and forth between before and after the crisis.
However, the book left many questions unanswered. You could fill in the gaps, but its just left up too your imagination. I also found that the action scenes didn’t really leave you on the edge of your seat.
Although this is a fairy tale retelling, I wouldn’t call it a fantasy book. It felt more like a dystopian with hints of science fiction. If you enjoyed The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken then you would probably enjoy this book too.
My Rating: 4.5 stars

Book Review: Scythe by Neal Shusterman
Tumblr media
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️(4.5)
Overview
If you like:
Moral challenged characters
Dystopian worlds
A 'perfect' world
Dangerous apprenticeships
Doing bad for the greater good
Dual POV
Corrupt societies
Then this book is the one for you!
The concept of this book is so unique and plays beautifully with the idea of the underlying imperfections in a seemingly perfect world. There were brief moments where I was loosing interest, but somehow they would be the exact times the curveball I was craving would arrive! If it hadn't hit on a big pet peeve of mine, this could have been a perfect 5 stars.
Blurb
'Thou Shalt Kill'
'What if death was the only thing left to control?
'In a perfect world, the only way to die is to be gleaned by a professional scythe. When Citra and Rowan are chosen to be apprentice scythes, they no they have no option but to learn the art of killing. However, the terrifying responsibility of choosing their victims is just the start.
'Corruption is the order of the day and Citra and Rowan need to stick together to fight it.
'Then they are told that one of them will have to glean the other...'
When I got settled into the story I forgot the end of that blurb, and the reveal came as such a shock until I realised I already knew 😂.
Warnings
There is a lot of violence in this book, not excruciatingly graffic, since that isn't my thing, but still frequent. There is also talk of suicide, referred to as 'self-gleaning', and descriptions of enjoying and becoming desensitised to violence.
If you think any of these topics may affect you this series may be worth a skip.
I feel this is suitable for 15/16 years and upwards.
The Downside
If I do anymore reviews in the future, you will learn that I'm a little bit of a romance cynic- if there isn't space to fully develop the relationship without it overpowering the story, then I don't see the benefit in having it. The main relationship in this story felt empty to me for the level of sacrifice it created. Something was missing, and it felt like the epitome of forced proximity. Probably won't be a popular opinion, but I honestly feel they would have been better off as friends. Like I said, if there isn't space to develop the relationship in the plot, it isn't necessary.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed this book, and I'm glad I impulse bought the series since I definitely will continue it! Lots of interesting concepts, and a refreshing break away from the standard fantasy/science fiction.
Fans of the Hunger Games and Divergent will definitely appreciate it, but even if dystopian isn't usually your thing, if you have any interest in mystery at all I'd encourage you to give it a shot.
Thank you very much for reading, I hope I helped!
My first full review so any criticism is welcome! Reblog if you'd like me to do the same for other books
Also, stuck between reading the Raybearer sequel or The Box in the Woods next, any advice?
🧡💛🤍💙🖤

I did not expect to like this one so much but it sucked me right in!!!
Tumblr media
4.5 ⭐
I loved this book. I love an underdog story. And with two out of the three sisters labelled weak or giftless you can guess which one is my least favourite. Katherine is my favourite hands down. Her story broke my heart. Arsinoe is a close second but at least she had friends! Mirabella was okay I guess lol although I'm not a huge fan. I feel that she is fairly misunderstood but I still have a hard time liking her as much as I like her sisters.
My eye are on Katherine and Peityr first and foremost. I can't wait to see what happens there. But the ending with Arsinoe 🤯 I did not see that one coming at all!!!!

a psalm of storms and silence // roseanne a. brown
first published: 2021 read: 12 march 2024 – 26 march 2024 pages: 568 format: paperback
genres: fiction, young adult, fantasy, mythology (african-inspired), romance favourite character(s): karina! least favourite character(s): farid can still choke!
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 thoughts: i was surprised that i enjoyed APOSAS more than ASOWAR! i feel like the story and the writing came into its own, and therefore i spent far less time comparing this book to others i've read, making it a more enjoyable reading experience overall.
as with book one, the worldbuilding and character writing continued to astound. i really liked the increased depth written into our two main characters, karina and malik. the direction the author went in with malik's character was so intriguing and he felt more multifaceted than he previously did, even if i still don't like him nearly as much as i do karina. it was joyful to see karina's character growth throughout the duology. i wish we had gotten slightly more depth into hanane, but i did enjoy how she was woven into the plot. farid was a very well-written villain despite my burning hatred for him, and his dynamic with hanane and malik was so interesting.
[LIGHT SPOILER] there is a chapter written around a character's suicide ideation that i think was incredibly well written, and i think generally the approach to incorporating anxiety, panic attacks etc. into the narrative has been done with a lot of care. i thought the chapter was a standout moment of writing.
i would love to see more of what roseanne a. brown writes! this was a solid duology and it's rare to find a series where there isn't a drop in quality as the books continue, never mind one where they actually improve.
