What happened to Nilanjana? (And Luisa and Mark and the rest of Carlos's team of scientists?)

I've been wondering this since the first time I listened to 230 - Carlos Explained.

Dr. Lubelle stepped forward to meet our hometown hero. Behind her was her henchman, Dr. Blake Jones (released last week on bail for breaking and entering), and behind them was a nearly endless crowd of begoggled scientists. Dr. Lubelle smiled with venom, and crossed her arms over her chest. “Welcome to the party,” she said. Behind Carlos, there gathered a more ragtag group, the community of Night Vale, or what was left of us after so much of our town had been explained away. They glared at both Dr. Lubelle and Carlos, radiating hatred for the scientific method and all who practice such heresy.

There were grumblings among the towns people, however. It seemed maybe they weren’t as convinced, when there was only one scientist on our side, and a horde of Dr. Lubelle’s minions in lab coats following her every evil word. Josh revved his engine in frustration. The Glow Cloud gusted and moaned. Dr. Lubelle sneered at us from affront her army, daring us to act.

And I know they didn't forget about his team, earlier in the same episode Dr. Lubelle says:

Oh the attention you got for this so called discovery, nonsense though it was. You got headlines, you got grants, an entire research team for this fully funded expedition.

And like, maybe Dave and and Rochelle, part of Carlos's team of 5 investigating the House That Doesn't Exist that leads to the Desert Other World in episode 46 are no longer around, because it has been nine years in Night Vale and normal earth time, and 90 years in Desert Other World time. And sure, maybe Luisa and Mark defected to Dr. Lubelle's team for the prestige, or because they still think of themselves as University of What It Is researchers first and Night Vale residents second. And my copy of the book Welcome to Night Vale is paper so I can't check who "Stan" is, listed on the Wiki as one of Carlos's scientists.

But Nilanjana Sikdar cares too much about Science, Carlos, and Night Vale to turn her back on them. So where was she?

So I’ve been trying to think about what the reveal of Carlos’ last name means for Charles in terms of a full name.

Since the name Charles is an English variation of the name Carlos, would his name just be Charles Oaks ? Or since he’s got pine tree symbolism from Pine Cliff, would he have a pine based last name ? Is Charles confirmed Latino ? Because if so then he could be Charles Pinos to mirror Carlos Robles. Or we could go with Charles Pines, but that might be too on the nose since he’s from a pine-based town.

Idk I’m having fun thinking about it

dr. carlos dave robles, age 46 years, from pamona, ca. graduated with his ba in marine biology from uc santa barbara before being accepted at the university of what it is. after graduating at the university he became a professor and later achieved tenure. he took what was meant to be a brief sabbatical to test his theory about a strange town, which brought him a substantial amount of funding and a fair deal of notoriety. after a few years of inconsistent correspondence with the university a search team was sent to find him, with no luck. eventually dr. robles' position was filled and his portrait was removed from its place in the university, as he was considered not only lost but disgraced.

first and foremost

ok now that that’s out of the way

i find dr. carlos dave robles very personally relatable and it was both excruciating and fascinating to see how he was absolutely paralyzed in the face of his past!!! wherein every second he didn’t act was another second things got worse for his town and his family!!! it reminds me some of his behavior in it devours when (spoilers) he was kind of manic with fear and motivation so much so that it it led him to make a massive mistake. i think, ideally, that would have been a lesson for him and he’d have worked on that. but it’s carlos. we know he didn’t. imo this arc really showed how much he’s kept simmering in it. he just keeps freezing in place and bolting at the last second and it’s DELICIOUS.

i guess he’s going to the dow now??? i’ve seen a lot of people feel this is really out of character for him which i sort of agree with (along with him accepting his new university position), but i think it’s a another situation where he’s just freaked out and taken what’s given to him until he can run away again. i do think this has to be a moment of change for him though. within the story, these mistakes and fears keep compounding and getting worse, and i think if he doesn’t get his shit together a bit it’s going to compound into a genuine irreversible disaster. from a writing standpoint, i think if we end up in the exact same place again it will get genuinely a bit frustrating - neither growing nor suffering consequences would be a poor choice i think. so i’m guessing/hoping this is a moment for a significant carlos arc! then again i was saying that at the beginning of this arc. we’ll see!!

on a pretty specific note, i was initially very upset at the full name reveal. i felt like a significant part of the mystery and been lost and i was disappointed, but as i’ve thought about it that’s how i felt at the loss of sarah sultan and the glow cloud as well, and i imagine my feelings were reflective of how the nv citizens would have felt. it’s shifted my reaction from shocked and kind of upset to more interested and impressed. if i were writing it i think i wouldn’t have revealed his name, but then again if i were writing it they’d all live happily ever after with no problems ever. that’s what fluff fic is for babey!

my overall feelings: he’s my specialist of little guys and i’m desperate for him to get his shit together. i’m SO fond of him. firm personal believer that he’s autistic and we are locking intense understanding eye contact at all times

also. i’ve been writing and rewriting and contemplating my answer for so long and holding it in my drafts, and it eventually occurred to me that that’s exactly the kind of behavior i’m accusing carlos of. i get it buddy. it’s time to set this ask free
