Do you have a favourite artists that has also designed book covers? 🔻 Mine is Shepard Fairey @obeygiant. He is the artist behind these three brilliant Orwell covers. If you look closely you will see why I am in complete and utter shock! Fairey happens to be in town (read why below) and I was lucky enough to have my books SIGNED by this incredibly kind and talented man! I am so grateful. 🙏🏼 Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist and activist. You may remember his “Hope” poster which he created for the Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign. This artist has spent the past week here in Vancouver creating a 20 story, 10,000 square foot mural on the side of a building downtown (swipe left to view). This new mural is called “Earth Justice”. It shows planet earth as the centre of a flower, cradled by a pair of hands. It is part of his Earth Crisis series. In Shepard Fairey’s words, “it is a call to respect and nurture the planet, with the understanding that our individual and collective actions dramatically impact current and future generations. If that's the case, you really should. Orwell's memoir of his experience of poverty in 1930s Paris and London is captured in vivid detail. Orwell never tries to romanticise poverty and even offers small essays on why it exists and how it could be combated. One of my favourite passages is Orwell laying out the argument the rich make when discussing reform to eradicate poverty. He writes, We know that poverty is unpleasant; in fact, since it is so remote, we rather enjoy harrowing ourselves with the thought of its unpleasantness. But don't expect us to do anything about it. We are sorry for you lower classes, just as we are sorry for a cat with mange, but we will fight like devils against any improvement of your condition. We feel that you are much safer as you are. The present state of affairs suits us, and we are not going to take the risk of setting you free, even by an extra hour a day. So, dear brothers, since evidently you must sweat to pay for our trips to Italy, sweat and be damned to you. (p120) Knowingly or seemingly unknowingly for most, this attitude prevails today in the West's exploitation of the Rest. It would be very easy to replace 'our trips to Italy' with 'the new Iphone X.' Isi buku ini terinspirasi oleh, kalau tidak diambil mentah-mentah dari, pengalaman Orwell hidup miskin di Paris dan, kemudian, di London.
