2022 was a soil, rot, and fungus kind of reading year for me and I regret nothing

The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley

A post-apocalyptic novella following a group of isolated men years after a plague killed off all of the women. Its told from the perspective of a young man who's place in the group is to tell stories of what was, and when they stumble upon a secret in the woods, what could be. Its weird, mildly distressing, kinda gross, but super super interesting. Highly recommend.

Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval

Translated from Norwegian by Marjam Idriss, it follows an international student studying in Australia who finds herself in a bizarre living situation with an older woman in a converted space with no internal walls and no privacy. It focuses on sexuality, exploration, and obsession, with some of the most viscerally tactile descriptions I've ever read. It's uncomfortable and frequently gross in that way only female authors can be, but I don't regret reading it.

Eartheater by Dolores Reyes

Translated from Argentinian by Julia Sanches, this book is about a young girl with a compulsion to eat earth which gives her visions of missing people and victims of violent crimes, and how this ostrasices her from her family as a child, and how she chooses to use this ability to help the community when she's older. I found this one a little harder to connect with, translated novels often feel drier and more distant to me because of what's lost from the native language, but reading the authors note really really helped contextualise it and increased my appreciation for what the author was doing so I recommend reading it too.

Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford

It's short, it's weird, it's a five star read, what else can I say. It follows a young healer, living in a small community with her father, as she learns to exist amongst people who are scared of what she is, but need her skills, and how far she'll go to protect that connection when she thinks she's found it. It's full of the healing power of nature, moral ambiguity, ethical greyness and dark themes. I loved it.

What Moves the Dead by T Kingfisher

Possibly my favourite author of the year, This is a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe (which I have not read) and follows main character Alex as they return to the home of their childhood friends after learning one of them is sick and possibly dying. T Kingfisher is an author who's style either works for you or it doesn't, and for me it really really does. The blend of humour, dread, and body horror was a joy and I read it in one sitting with no effort at all. And it's chock full of fungus, which is apparently my jam now.

Título: Cometierra Autora: Dolores Reyes Editorial: Sigilo Soporte: Físico Resumen: novela negra, policial fantástico. una chica tiene un don, comer tierra le permite tener visiones, y lo utiliza para ayudar a los familiares de las víctimas crímenes de su barrio a encontrar respuestas.

Estaba en una de esas librerías palermitanas que también tienen cafecito para leer y un chabón que buscaba que leer me vio leyendo al contratapa y me dijo “Llevalo, te va a gustar”. Al tiempo en otra librería sin saber qué comprar lo vi, me acordé del flaco y opté por seguir su recomendación en diferido.

Me costó acostumbrarme a la lírica de la narración pero una vez que le agarré la mano, quinta a fondo.

Conurba, femicidios, abandono, dolor, tristeza, dulzura y el más allá. Es una novela visceral, dura, áspera y de lectura veloz. No paré hasta terminar. Maneja una realidad que, de la misma forma que, me repele, a la vez me interpela. Este libro se mete bien adentro ahí donde la justicia tiene más cara de mito que otra cosa, la famosa tierra de nadie que los capitalinos solemos nombrar pero nunca llegamos a conocer.

Siento que todo el mundo amó este libro, bah por como hablan de él, pero sospecho que la mitad de la gente solamente quiere aparentar ser muy woke y decir que es maravilloso. No les creo tanto, no porque no me haya gustado, me gustó, lo sobrenatural it´s kind of my jam y la historia está muy bien contada, pero no sé. Capaz eso que me repele es lo que no me hace ver eso fascinó a todos, no lo sé. Lo presté al toque que lo terminé y lo recomendé. Fue lectura de verano de varios amigues.

I spaced out watching the plants. Neither me nor my brother had tended to the garden and the passionflower looked ready to swallow the house. Most of the flowers had opened, though a couple of orange buds still hung around. Beyond the branches, my barrio stirred the way it does at nightfall. And I didn’t mind thinking that one day, if Ezequiel, Walter, and me all went to shit, the passionflower would swallow up our crib like a carnivorous plant. A house can die, too.

(Hay cosas sobre la clasificación que todavía no están al cien por ciento sentadas, y hay libros que son bastante difíciles de decidir dónde meter, pero creemos que por ahora las cosas son relativamente fáciles de encontrar; igualmente siempre estamos para escuchar sus sugerencias y/o someter a plebiscito –ja– algunos cambios o decisiones.)
