ACID MAMMOTH Presents Searing New Number from 'Supersonic Megafauna Collision’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Get ready for yet another banger from ACID MAMMOTH, a follow-up to the Greek foursome's 2021 Caravan. We're into the band's fourth opus now, with the impending release 'Supersonic Megafauna Collision' (2024), and it is absolutely the kind of fuzz-filled, atmospheric escape that doomers are craving.
Today, new sounds emerge from Acid Mammoth's fourth album. "Atomic Shaman" is the track, and the band clues us in on the fantastic story behind it:
The surface burns day and night and dwellers of the deepest caverns have embraced the pitch-black corridors below as their new dominion. No one dares to venture above it would only mean certain death by the all-consuming hellfire that came from the skies. The dwellers are secluded in the deep chanting frenziedly and calling upon the spirits from the otherworld for salvation. This is the dismal world of “Atomic Shaman” the track that opens side B of our upcoming new album. Our goal with this song was to capture all the despair and hopelessness of that horrific turn of events and put it in one song greatly inspired by the 1986 movie “Dead Man’s Letters.”
Tumblr media
We start with dark, subterranean riffage. Guitar tone is warmly irradiated, with powerful, doomy, bittersweet leads that drill right through rocky passage ways. Drums unleash the pattering of acid rain two-minutes in. Vocals are touched by numbed grief, lamenting the hellscape that planet earth has become. Is there a future for humanity in this blanched, cadaverous world? Only the Atomic Shaman sees clearly through the smokey morass to chart a way forward.
It's the second single to surface from Acid Mammoth's Supersonic Megafauna Collision. Look for their new full-length to drop on April 5th, as Heavy Psych Sounds issues the LP on four varieties of vinyl, as well as in compact disc and digital formats (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with Electric Wizard, Dopelord, Monolord, Witchorious, and Slomatics.

The Weekly Gravy #141
I’ll start the week off by watching some more shorts by the recently deceased Kenneth Anger: Rabbit’s Moon (1979) – A few years after the first version was released, Anger re-edited Rabbit’s Moon, speeding up the frame rate, changing the soundtrack from classic doo-wop to a 70s rock song called “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” changing the stylized zoom of the Moon to what appears to be stock…

I recognise I am fully rehashing my thoughts I had in [redacted] fandom but there is just something really delightful about Ludger and Julius overthinking marrying the other because like. Even without being the Textbook Incest Definition™ I could see it still being important to them that they can affirm to each other that they’re not “just” normal brothers who will eventually move apart and get married to other people. The marriage not at all being rooted in expectations of romance but rather a sign of “You’re the most important person in the world to me” and marriage being the easiest way everyone understands that.

The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan (15): Of diamond McGuffins and dodgy dealing in 1627.
#onemannsmovies review of "The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan" (2023). #DArtagnan. A rip-roaring historical romp that looks great. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” (2023). “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” is the first of a two part film, actually filmed back-to-back, that is a retelling of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel set in and around the court of Louis XIII of France in 1627. And, it’s actually pretty good. The final part, subtitled “Milady” (which is a bit of a spoiler for an…

Austin’s AIWASS Resurrect  Scottish Folk Song ‘Cruel Brother’ in New Single
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Artwork by gozien_crayon
It has been estimated that some four million new songs are being released into the world of sound every year. Certainly, it's been hard -- neigh, impossible -- to keep up with all the new albums churned out just in the doom scene. As a consequence, it is all too easy to loose touch with the great songs of the past. I'm not talking about songs from the '70s, '80s or '90s, but those written generations and generations ago, stretching back into Medieval and Renaissance times.
That's why it's so refreshing to encounter a band taking on an old Scottish ballad like the one before us. Taking a cue from Battlefield Band, the traditional folk group who brought "Cruel Brother" to a wider audience decades ago, Austin, Texas band AIWASS gives this tragic tale a unique twist.
Dark, moody synthesizer surrounds the senses as the track begins, as if to transport us hundreds of years into the past to a scene unthinkable: a dying bride, a spiteful brother, a grieving knight, and an atmosphere teeming with sadness and revenge. Gently plucked mandolin strings cross with acoustic guitar. Misty, forlorn vocals tell the tale of love found and lost, eventually engaging the full powers of the doom metal quartet, complete with foreboding drums and bluesy, bittersweet guitar riffs.
Frontman Blake Carrera comments:
The themes of the song, despite being an old Scottish ballad, are quite familiar to listeners of doom and metal in general: love, lust, violence, and loss. By reinterpreting this song, we hope to bring the past into the future. The screams at the end of the song are not just an identification that this is “blackened doom”; they are also the screams of loss and sadness that are perpetuated throughout time by all of us.

Aiwass caught my ear during the pandemic, when we premiered and gave a detailed review of their first LP Wayward Gods. Since then, the band has expanded with founding member Blake Carrera (vox, guitar, mandolin, synth) joined by Eddy Keyes (vox, acoustic guitar, bass), Pablo Anton (guitar), and Grant Husselman (drums). As a result, the Aiwass sound has evolved into something wonderfully nuanced and altogether powerful.
"Cruel Brother" will be issued as a standalone single on Friday, March 28th (get it here). Fans of Green Lung, take notice

There Was A Bed Made Of Earth... by @the-red-butterfly
Characters: Elwing & Dior
Rating: Gen
Review: A beautiful walk taken by Elwing to talk to the father she's lost. We always see her as the wife of Eärendil and the mother of the twins; let my friend take you on a deceivingly peaceful walk to meet Elwing, the daughter and orphan.
A piece full of longing and pain as well. Be prepared!

So apparently I'm on an Azari binge? Cause I just found Shadow Shadow by Azari?? I mean, it's freaking good and I'm not mad, but I'm sensing the beginnings of a trend, lol.
Anyways! I just have to say! This song starts off good! Like, it's slow-ish at first (can't really say slow since it's still kinda poppy and I'm still grooving) but then it just commits to a real boppy beat and that made me love it already!! I love songs with a nice quick beat and this doesn't disappoint!! And I love the music in this song! Something about the underlying notes just makes it even better. It's like—and I apologize in advance but this is the only way I can think to describe it—it's like the first note is nothing much on its own, but then the second adds something similar to the futility in Reincarnation Apple (by PinnocchioP) but less sad, like you're being chased and your pursuer knows you can't escape and is gloating about it. And it's so raw, so nakedly triumphant and scornful and derisive that it feels visceral. And the third note carries some of that same energy but just less heightened, and the fourth both brings the series back to the original note and is mocking again, like "Of course you can't escape, you dumb dumb" but smug and from the pursuer's point of view. (I... may have listened to this song too much, lol. Also, with this context, the clapping at the beginning sounds like an audience watching your demise, as emotionally detached from you and what's actually happening as someone watching TV!) It all is SO GOOD, I love it so much and that little series of notes going down then coming back up slowly has so much in it that I keep replaying this song to soak in all those emotions and in that moment. Like you can try to encapsulate just how it makes you feel but you can't quite express those feelings and they never quite fully soak in so you keep replaying the song to try to fully experience the music, but again it feels a little like some of it is sliding off like water on a duck's feathers and repeat cycle. This is the kind of music I get stuck in my head for days, that I literally bop to until I have to listen to it outside of my head! This is the music that feels like getting close to pure bliss!! MM!
BUT THEN. THIS SONG GETS BETTER! It switches to a slower, more defined bop, and GOSH it's BEAUTIFUL. Like, it feels like a heartbeat, literally just beating in my chest, taking over my whole train of thought, and dictating the mood and speed in which I exist. But sometimes it swirls into a smooth curl of a thing (like instead of sharply there bass beats, it's the lyrics swirling around the straight line that the beats lay out), WHICH ADDS. SO MUCH SWAG. And it's so swaggy, it's so self-assured and smug, that I cannot help but dance! And this is something that you can't do a choreographed dance to (not literally, but like when you first hear it, you're too filled with emotions to try and do a choreographed dance) so every movement is just an expression of the pure joy this song brings. And again, you try to define the beats and the emotion you feel with your movements, but you can't translate all of it. (This is another good part of the song. c:) This song is so good that it takes over a part of my soul!!
BUT THEN the song gets FASTER ohmygosh. And there's no lyrics or anything to define, so you can just extremely bop your head and get out all of the undefined emotion the rest of the song caused. (Like, I bopped my head so hard that my glasses fell off. Multiple times. Eventually I just left them there and picked them up after.) And then the lyrics come back!! And the note progression!! And it all feels so chaotic and full and quick like you're running for your life!!! I love!!!
And then, finally, the song must end. All of the extra instrumental leaves and the applause comes back and it's just the lyrics and a bit of the beat. And then it all falls off entirely and vanishes, leaving me disappointed and switching the loop feature on to hear it again.
(ALSO! When I first heard this song in full, I listened to the automatically created YouTube topic video thing, where an artist is a topic and any song made and/or sang solely by them is added to that extra channel. You know the thing, right? Hopefully, cause I don't have a better explanation. Anyways, so I listened to the actual video for this tho and the art?? Is so good??? I love it ohmygosh it's beautiful MM!)
So lol, guess I found a new (one of my) favorite song(s). And yes, I got a lil obsessed with this song after listening if you couldn't tell. This was the song I was talking about last week. (...I really should make a playlist for all the songs that make me feel like I'm feeling the gates of heaven, hm.) Anyways, seems I might be checking out a few more of Azari's songs maybe! I kinda hope! But I must go now! Writing this reminded me that this song existed (after I found another good song last week, hence why I forgot to actually write this ( -. _-. ) ) so I shall now be doing my homework to this song shortly!! Seeya!

Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s: “Blow Your Head” (1974, 1989)
Taken from his second album Damn Right I Am Somebody (1974), “Blow Your Head” was made as its own single 15 years after the fact. It was funky enough that it was sampled for many golden-era artists and hits such as Schoolly D's "Gangster Boogie" ('89), Digable Planet's "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool like Dat)" ('92), Tha Alkaholiks "Make Room" ('93), Almighty RSO's "Revenge Of Da Badd Boyz" ('94), and more. Many fans will want to hear that brass and lots of hot-steppin’, but what I felt stole the show was that sick stomach-turning squelch from point A to point B. There’s no way you could miss it.

Review: The Harvest Young: Bound by Fate (The Next Generation Book 1) by M.A. Church
Review: The Harvest Young: Bound by Fate (The Next Generation Book 1) by M.A. Church
Rating: 3 🌈 It’s been a while since I read M.A. Church’s series , The Harvest Taken (2014), but I do remember liking those stories. Which I why , aside from the terrific cover , I picked up The Harvest Young: Bound by Fate (The Next Generation Book 1) by M.A. Church. I’m not sure that I either enjoyed this as much or remembered the other very well. Because I found I had quite a few issues with…
