I love when Dutch tourists ask "can I pin here ?" when making a payment
instead of "can I pay by card ?"
because, firstly, it's such a typically Dutch expression. noöne else in the world uses "pin" like that. literally. like it's just Netherlands Dutch people specifically, not even Belgian Dutch speakers say it. it's kinda charming actually
don't get me wrong, I see the logic, because you typically have to enter your PIN when paying by card (unless you're American. American tourists will just swipe their card and the money goes off. no PIN needed. very scary. at least NFC/contactless payments from your phone seem more secure ?) but the word just doesn't work like that in English
and secondly, card payments are the default here. the fact that they even ask if card payments are possible feels... nostalgic (German tourists often ask as well, but they'll phrase it like "do you accept MasterCard" or whatever brand card they have). in fact you're more likely to find places that don't accept cash anymore. even street vendors here have little pocket-sized card machines that connect via mobile/cell network. huge respect to societies that are still cash-based, I mean it's better in terms of data privacy and tracking, but alas. we are not.

Two of humanity's most ubiquitous historical materials, cement and carbon black (which resembles very fine charcoal), may form the basis for a novel, low-cost energy storage system, according to a new study. The technology could facilitate the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and tidal power by allowing energy networks to remain stable despite fluctuations in renewable energy supply. The two materials, the researchers found, can be combined with water to make a supercapacitor -- an alternative to batteries -- that could provide storage of electrical energy. As an example, the MIT researchers who developed the system say that their supercapacitor could eventually be incorporated into the concrete foundation of a house, where it could store a full day's worth of energy while adding little (or no) to the cost of the foundation and still providing the needed structural strength. The researchers also envision a concrete roadway that could provide contactless recharging for electric cars as they travel over that road. New Breakthrough in Energy Storage – MIT Engineers Create Supercapacitor out of Ancient Materials
Tumblr media
MIT engineers have created a “supercapacitor” made of ancient, abundant materials, that can store large amounts of energy. Made of just cement, water, and carbon black (which resembles powdered charcoal), the device could form the basis for inexpensive systems that store intermittently renewable energy, such as solar or wind energy. Constructed from cement, carbon black, and water, the device holds the potential to offer affordable and scalable energy storage for renewable energy sources.
Two of humanity’s most ubiquitous historical materials, cement and carbon black (which resembles very fine charcoal), may form the basis for a novel, low-cost energy storage system, according to a new study. The technology could facilitate the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and tidal power by allowing energy networks to remain stable despite fluctuations in renewable energy supply.
The two materials, the researchers found, can be combined with water to make a supercapacitor — an alternative to batteries — that could provide storage of electrical energy. As an example, the MIT researchers who developed the system say that their supercapacitor could eventually be incorporated into the concrete foundation of a house, where it could store a full day’s worth of energy while adding little (or no) to the cost of the foundation and still providing the needed structural strength. The researchers also envision a concrete roadway that could provide contactless recharging for electric cars as they travel over that road.
The simple but innovative technology is described in a recent paper published in the journal PNAS, in a paper by MIT professors Franz-Josef Ulm, Admir Masic, and Yang-Shao Horn, and four others at MIT and at the Wyss Institute.
Capacitors are in principle very simple devices, consisting of two electrically conductive plates immersed in an electrolyte and separated by a membrane. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, positively charged ions from the electrolyte accumulate on the negatively charged plate, while the positively charged plate accumulates negatively charged ions. Since the membrane in between the plates blocks charged ions from migrating across, this separation of charges creates an electric field between the plates, and the capacitor becomes charged. The two plates can maintain this pair of charges for a long time and then deliver them very quickly when needed. Supercapacitors are simply capacitors that can store exceptionally large charges.
The amount of power a capacitor can store depends on the total surface area of its conductive plates. The key to the new supercapacitors developed by this team comes from a method of producing a cement-based material with an extremely high internal surface area due to a dense, interconnected network of conductive material within its bulk volume. The researchers achieved this by introducing carbon black — which is highly conductive — into a concrete mixture along with cement powder and water, and letting it cure. The water naturally forms a branching network of openings within the structure as it reacts with cement, and the carbon migrates into these spaces to make wire-like structures within the hardened cement.
These structures have a fractal-like structure, with larger branches sprouting smaller branches, and those sprouting even smaller branchlets, and so on, ending up with an extremely large surface area within the confines of a relatively small volume. The material is then soaked in a standard electrolyte material, such as potassium chloride, a kind of salt, which provides the charged particles that accumulate on the carbon structures. Two electrodes made of this material, separated by a thin space or an insulating layer, form a very powerful supercapacitor, the researchers found.
Tumblr media
Since the new “supercapacitor” concrete would retain its strength, a house with a foundation made of this material could store a day’s worth of energy produced by solar panels or windmills, and allow it to be used whenever it’s needed. Credit: Image courtesy of Franz-Josef Ulm, Admir Masic, and Yang-Shao Horn
The two plates of the capacitor function just like the two poles of a rechargeable battery of equivalent voltage: When connected to a source of electricity, as with a battery, energy gets stored in the plates, and then when connected to a load, the electrical current flows back out to provide power.
“The material is fascinating,” Masic says, “because you have the most-used manmade material in the world, cement, that is combined with carbon black, that is a well-known historical material — the Dead Sea Scrolls were written with it. You have these at least two-millennia-old materials that when you combine them in a specific manner you come up with a conductive nanocomposite, and that’s when things get really interesting.”
As the mixture sets and cures, he says, “The water is systematically consumed through cement hydration reactions, and this hydration fundamentally affects nanoparticles of carbon because they are hydrophobic (water repelling).” As the mixture evolves, “the carbon black is self-assembling into a connected conductive wire,” he says. The process is easily reproducible, with materials that are inexpensive and readily available anywhere in the world. And the amount of carbon needed is very small — as little as 3 percent by volume of the mix — to achieve a percolated carbon network, Masic says.
Supercapacitors made of this material have great potential to aid in the world’s transition to renewable energy, Ulm says. The principal sources of emissions-free energy, wind, solar, and tidal power, all produce their output at variable times that often do not correspond to the peaks in electricity usage, so ways of storing that power are essential. “There is a huge need for big energy storage,” he says, and existing batteries are too expensive and mostly rely on materials such as lithium, whose supply is limited, so cheaper alternatives are badly needed. “That’s where our technology is extremely promising, because cement is ubiquitous,” Ulm says.
The team calculated that a block of nanocarbon-black-doped concrete that is 45 cubic meters (or yards) in size — equivalent to a cube about 3.5 meters across — would have enough capacity to store about 10 kilowatt-hours of energy, which is considered the average daily electricity usage for a household. Since the concrete would retain its strength, a house with a foundation made of this material could store a day’s worth of energy produced by solar panels or windmills and allow it to be used whenever it’s needed. And, supercapacitors can be charged and discharged much more rapidly than batteries.
After a series of tests used to determine the most effective ratios of cement, carbon black, and water, the team demonstrated the process by making small supercapacitors, about the size of some button-cell batteries, about 1 centimeter across and 1 millimeter thick, that could each be charged to 1 volt, comparable to a 1-volt battery. They then connected three of these to demonstrate their ability to light up a 3-volt light-emitting diode (LED). Having proved the principle, they now plan to build a series of larger versions, starting with ones about the size of a typical 12-volt car battery, then working up to a 45-cubic-meter version to demonstrate its ability to store a house-worth of power.
There is a tradeoff between the storage capacity of the material and its structural strength, they found. By adding more carbon black, the resulting supercapacitor can store more energy, but the concrete is slightly weaker, and this could be useful for applications where the concrete is not playing a structural role or where the full strength-potential of concrete is not required. For applications such as a foundation, or structural elements of the base of a wind turbine, the “sweet spot” is around 10 percent carbon black in the mix, they found.
Another potential application for carbon-cement supercapacitors is for building concrete roadways that could store energy produced by solar panels alongside the road and then deliver that energy to electric vehicles traveling along the road using the same kind of technology used for wirelessly rechargeable phones. A related type of car-recharging system is already being developed by companies in Germany and the Netherlands, but using standard batteries for storage.
Initial uses of the technology might be for isolated homes or buildings or shelters far from grid power, which could be powered by solar panels attached to the cement supercapacitors, the researchers say.
Ulm says that the system is very scalable, as the energy-storage capacity is a direct function of the volume of the electrodes. “You can go from 1-millimeter-thick electrodes to 1-meter-thick electrodes, and by doing so basically you can scale the energy storage capacity from lighting an LED for a few seconds, to powering a whole house,” he says.
Depending on the properties desired for a given application, the system could be tuned by adjusting the mixture. For a vehicle-charging road, very fast charging and discharging rates would be needed, while for powering a home “you have the whole day to charge it up,” so slower-charging material could be used, Ulm says.
“So, it’s really a multifunctional material,” he adds. Besides its ability to store energy in the form of supercapacitors, the same kind of concrete mixture can be used as a heating system, by simply applying electricity to the carbon-laced concrete.
Ulm sees this as “a new way of looking toward the future of concrete as part of the energy transition.”

The War Rectangle.
It's completely troubling to me that people talk about how phones and the rest of the small, handheld, general-purpose computers we have now are such damaging acids to society's fabric. "They're raising a generation of iPad kids." "Liveleak damaged my innocence as a kid." "We don't know the full extent of the societal damage on-" It goes on and on and all the complaints are valid and need to be discussed, but they miss another, much more pertinant issue that these devices have in them; Your Phone is a dual-use technology, a weapon in every aspect in your life.
What does that term even mean? It's Military Jargon-ese for: 'This item, or thing, is used for civilian purposes, but can also easily be used in, for, or as a weapon of war at the drop of a hat.' Your phone can do this, it can do it so easily you don't even think about the dilemma that way. It's absurd and the absurdity crawled into your life while you were enthralled with being able to take the internet on the go.
You can kill a man with your phone and an FPV drone. Your choice in how he dies, from a dropped grenade or an RPG warhead duct taped to the front, or a million other ways to plant a payload into his body. You can even record a video of his death as your own little trophy to display. You can spot for artillery, interface with GPS-based navigation software and push out corrections to your entire teams tactical map, turn manhunts into trivial pursuits, upload intellegence of almost any kind to wherever it needs to go. They don't even need special phones to do this, they've been using 'Commercial-Off-The-Shelf' hardware since the early 2010's. You already knew that, though.
You can drain a persons life savings from their bank account, all from the park bench they passed you by. There's a million little holes in the systems that let you "manage" the money under your name that isn't even yours, and it only takes serendipity for someone fidding around to find a lucrative crack in the armor. Contactless payment, NFC and payment processors are just as big a vunerability as they are a convience. They don't even have to inconvience you to steal from you. But, You already knew that.
You can track people from their phones, with yours. It's not even hard, you probably haven't even thought about searching for the software to do it. Current Wifi and cellular chipsets can be used to sniff networks and track other end-user devices on them. You can war drive with a flagship smartphone if you need to, and modern laptops are more than capable of doing it now. You can hand off your entire life, digitally recorded, to a stranger without even knowing it, just likeyour money. Apple had to add additional software safeguards to Airtags because people used them to stalk other people by putting them in cars or other objects that people take with them. It's a service that uses regular peoples iPhones to make a gigantic network to ping that Airtags location to a central server somewhere in the bowels of Apple, and them beams it to you, keeping all that data in the meanwhile. You didn't pause to think about it, but you already knew that.
The algorithms people are concerned about, that they're still letting raise their kids, are more than just the content reccomendation they do. You can pattern an entire persons IQ quotient, disposition, disabilites, mental faculties, and politics just off their engagement with a service. Researchers could predict when people with BPD and gambling disorder would relapse or go on a gambling spree with a near 99% efficiency. Facebook openly admitted to experimenting on people to boost engagement with the site, negative content greatly encouraging extended interaction. Countless other sites with countless other controversies and manipulations and yet it still became normal under tired, doomscrolling eyes. Any government with enough arm-twisting, money, or subterfuge can buy, obtain, steal, and then scrutinize your digital identity, and then nudge you in the ways governments want to. It's still basic, baby steps now. Imagine how it'll be in a decades time when you can spool up an AI and feed it information about the algorithms your children use, in real time, feed the information it predicts about them back into those algorithms, all the time, to give them the right ideas, at the right moment, in the right tone, and they'll feel like those positions were just something they developed themselves, even if it was their clone who nudged them into an artificial headspace at the behest of a meeting in a government building somewhere. Again, you already knew that, it was just the quiet bit no one wanted to spit out lest they get odd looks.
We'll still use them though. Our progeny will still use them. In a sea of endless information, you have to stay plugged in, lest everything and everyone else pass you in the blink of an eye, like an F1 driver making a bad move, and getting thrown to back of the pack. No time to think. There's a weapon raised against you by leviathan hands in your pocket. You bought it and paid for it, your tax payed for the rest of it as well, and its aimed at your loved ones too. And you're running out of time in the epoch before its indispensable in your world, and your kids.

Event organizers benefit from QR codes as well. They can track attendance in real-time, helping to manage session capacities and optimize resources. Moreover, QR codes provide valuable data insights, such as attendance patterns and peak entry times, which inform decision-making for future events.
4. Digital Badge Printing
Traditional printed badges are being replaced by digital badge printing solutions. These systems generate badges on-site, complete with attendee names, affiliations, and any other relevant information. Digital badges are not only eco-friendly but also allow for real-time corrections and updates. If an attendee's details change, the badge can be quickly reprinted without hassle.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, digital badge printing systems can incorporate features like RFID or NFC technology. These badges can be used for session tracking, access control, and interactive experiences, providing event organizers with valuable data and attendees with enhanced engagement opportunities.
5. e-Tickets and Mobile Wallet Integration
e-tickets are another paperless alternative that enhances the attendee experience. Attendees receive electronic tickets via email, which can be stored in their mobile wallets. These e-tickets are easily accessible and eliminate the need for physical tickets. Attendees can present their e-tickets for entry by simply displaying them on their smartphones. This technology also supports last-minute event registrations and changes. Attendees can receive e-tickets instantly, even on the day of the event, making it convenient for both organizers and late registrants.:
6. Efficient Access Control with RFID Technology
RFID technology has gained prominence in modern event registration due to its efficiency and versatility. RFID badges or wristbands contain embedded RFID chips that can be scanned remotely using RFID readers. This technology offers seamless access control, as attendees can simply walk through RFID-enabled entry points without the need for physical scanning or manual checks.
Tumblr media
The benefits of RFID technology in event registration are numerous. It reduces entry bottlenecks, allowing for swift and hassle-free access for attendees. Organizers can track attendance in real time, monitor session participation, and gather valuable data on attendee movement throughout the event venue. Incorporating RFID technology into your paperless event registration system not only streamlines access control but also contributes to a more efficient and secure event environment, ultimately enhancing the success of your event.
7. Virtual Attendee Check-In
For hybrid or fully virtual events, modern paperless registration technologies extend to virtual attendee check-in. Attendees can access virtual event platforms with ease using unique login credentials provided during registration. This eliminates the need for physical check-in points and allows attendees to participate from anywhere in the world.
Virtual check-in also enables event organizers to monitor attendee engagement during virtual sessions. They can track attendance, participation in polls or Q&A sessions, and resource downloads. This data informs post-event analytics and helps tailor future virtual events to attendee preferences.
8. Data Analytics and Reporting Tools
Modern paperless registration technologies come equipped with robust data analytics and reporting tools. Event organizers can access detailed reports on attendee demographics, registration trends, session popularity, and engagement metrics. These insights enable organizers to make data-driven decisions, refine marketing strategies, and continuously improve event experiences.
Additionally, reporting tools support post-event evaluations, helping organizers assess the event's success and identify areas for enhancement. The ability to gather and analyze data efficiently is a cornerstone of event success in the digital age.
Moreover, the data insights generated by these technologies allow for more targeted marketing efforts, reducing marketing expenses and improving the return on investment (ROI) for event promotions.
Conclusion
By the end of this blog, we know that in a world where efficiency, convenience, and sustainability are paramount, modern paperless registration technologies have become indispensable tools for event organizers. 100.000 skridt for London Tech Week
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

10 Fintech Trends Every Manager Needs to Know for 2022
You must stay current with trends if you lead in the financial sector. As finance moves online, these trends will aid in keeping your company competitive while attracting and retaining top personnel.
Alternative financing, which can give consumers a way to avoid interest, is a trend you should be aware of. This includes super apps and purchase now, pay later (BNPL) options.
Companies can boost customer retention and create an extra source of income by using embedded finance. Financial services integrated into a product or service increase customer satisfaction and cut costs.
A crucial component of a successful embedded finance approach is product breadth. Distributors can begin by accepting payments before moving on to lending or more complex products to meet customers' more extensive financial requirements.
AI automates processes and analyzes real-time data to assist businesses in making better choices. It lessens human mistakes as well.
This is particularly helpful in professions where human error can result in expensive errors or even fatalities. For instance, manufacturing businesses can monitor output and consider potential mistakes to guarantee a higher level of safety.
Alternative lending can be a lifesaver for business owners needing funding outside of conventional banks. These funds may be employed for company expansion, inventory purchases, or employee hiring.
Compared to conventional banks, these lenders' application procedures are much simpler, and their response times are shorter. No extensive paperwork is required because the complete process is digital.
To control their spending, consumers increasingly opt for purchase now, pay later (BNPL) options. Because of this flexibility, e-commerce companies and retailers see an increase in sales.
Utilizing BNPL services, however, can also raise the danger of debt accumulating. BNPL providers must ensure they have access to accurate job verification data to reduce this risk.
Super apps combine various services to provide users with a one-stop store for all their needs. Customers and businesses greatly benefit from this because it lowers re-acquisition costs by keeping current users on one network.
When, where, and how individuals interact with financial services are all altered by embedded finance. Both financial and non-financial businesses can benefit greatly from it.
China's WeChat is a prime illustration of a super app that houses a variety of services, including payments, e-commerce, and messaging. Similar apps like Paytm from India, Grab from Singapore, GoTo from Indonesia, Zalo from Vietnam, and Kakao from South Korea are already industry leaders.
Additionally, by transforming the data, analysts can gain more information. Additionally, it enhances data integrity by removing mistakes and irregularities.
A digital ledger technology called blockchain can enhance financial management procedures. Transparency in financial services can be improved, transaction costs can be eliminated, and fraud can be decreased.
By utilizing a distributed network of computers, the technology enables users to document transactions in a secure and impenetrable manner. The network's users reach an agreement on each transaction's integrity.
The continued adoption of digital payments has been one of the biggest trends in the finance sector since 2020. Even though contactless payment methods acquired popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, this tendency might intensify in 2022.
Limiting personal contact and stopping the spread of germs is top of mind for many in today's COVID-19 climate. Businesses can benefit from contactless purchases by enabling this.
The traditional bank model is being challenged by challenger banks, which impose transparent fees, provide a better customer experience, and advance technology. They are becoming increasingly well-liked among customers who no longer trust their conventional banks.
They can provide a complete range of banking products and technology to their BaaS customers, which is advantageous for fintech companies that only provide their tech stack and e-money and lack banking licenses.
Without sending customers to conventional financial institutions, embedded finance integrates financial services like lending, payment processing, or insurance into the infrastructure of non-financial companies.
For non-financial companies, embedded finance is more cost-effective, quicker, and easier to implement than construct and buy.
Embedded banking is expanding quickly in various sectors. Lead use cases include retail and e-commerce networks, marketplaces for ridesharing and two-sided meal delivery, and payments for mobile apps.
Through data aggregation, marketing professionals can export, organize, and reformat their marketing data. This procedure is crucial for many purposes, including tracking success and calculating ROI.

4 Critical Technologies All Small Businesses Need
Tumblr media
One of the best things about technology is that it does quite a bit to level the playing field. Smaller businesses can effectively do the work of larger enterprises because they have access to similar technologies. Additionally, technology goes a long way toward helping businesses manage their customer relationships, a key component to any revenue-seeking endeavor. This month we thought we would put together a list of four technologies every small business can use to manage their business and compete in their market.
Human Resources Software
For decades, human resources was manned by people doing constant tasks to help improve working conditions and facilitate business by keeping companies running smoothly. Today, the whole industry is seeing a major shift, in large part, from technology. Today, there are online platforms for recruiting talent, time-tracking software that makes accounts receivable much more efficient, and other applications designed to make the role of human resources easier to manage. With this technology, the communication between HR and the staff is streamlined and secure, the litany of forms needed by a business and outside regulatory bodies has all moved online, and all the performance tracking that HR is responsible for can be audited through a company’s technology. Today’s HR software also makes reviewing the enormous amount of data available much, much easier.
Customer Relationship Management
The power of customer relationship management (CRM) software is how it combines all the elements that a business needs to manage their relationships with current and even potential customers. What’s more, the CRM typically has features that allow for management of projects and services, time tracking, and saves company and project-centric information so that employees that work in different departments can do work for a single project in one easy-to-use interface.
Innovative Payment Methods
Money is seemingly tight everywhere and customers really respond when your business provides advanced payment solutions. Technology like contactless payments are gaining in popularity. These include mobile wallets and card payments (using swipe or tap to pay), which allow your customers to pay online or in person without having to have cash on them.
Advanced Data Security
One place where a lot of small and mid-sized businesses lag behind enterprises is with their cybersecurity. Your business needs to invest in security solutions for your brick and mortar locations, for your network and infrastructure, and for the data you take in. Since many businesses are now looking for as much information about their prospective and current customers as possible, having an idea and the tools needed on how to protect that information is crucial to sustaining a positive reputation within your customer base and inside your industry.
Technology can significantly change the way your business operates and can present some pretty great changes to help you tackle all the issues your business may have. Call the IT professionals at Infradapt for more information about getting the technology and technology support your business requires today at 800-394-2301.
