Let me introduce you to one of my favorite insects, the humble drain fly.
Tumblr media
Also known as the moth fly, we are specifically taking about Clogmia albipunctata. These adorable little cuties are true flies and their natural habitats are swampy wet areas.
Tumblr media
"But Alex," you scream, frothing at the mouth, eyes bulging, "Why are they called drain flies?"
While the adults eat nectar or just water, the larvae are aquatic and eat decaying matter. Drain flies have discovered that our sewage system is a neverending supply of disgusting organic stuff just decaying away. Yummy! As such, they can often be found in drains. Maybe you've had drain flies? Rejoice, for you have been blessed.
The best thing about these guys?
youtube
They fly like drunk idiots.

They are special little guys, perfect in every way.

I'm going to rant about bugs. Not bugs, THE bug.
(Btw, I'm going to include a picture of it; saying just in case).
There's this little creature whose scientific name is Clogmia albipunctata, but I like to call it "silent fly" or "thing that's probably going to be the end of me". It looks like this:
Tumblr media
So, this guy over there is actually a good boy. You can see them in wet places or bathrooms because of humidity, and they eat the bacteria and fungus that is present in there. The problem is that they are so quiet you could easily ignore their presence. If you spot them you can see they do not move in the slightest; they just stay still as if watching your every movement and every little detail in your face.
I used to love these bugs, I thought they were silly and interesting, but now I'm terrified of them. They aren't bad, they aren't dangerous, they can't even fly for too long... They can, however, suddenly start levitating in the air and start making their way towards you. No explanation, no time to react, just a tiny black dot coming to you like an arrow being shot from the darkness. When that happens, my body is only capable of bending over and somehow managing to splash water from the sink to end with its life. They die quite easily and fast, one of the few great things I've learned after having to deal with them for over a decade now.
Maybe it's just me and the overwhelming feeling of danger that makes my skin suddenly feel cold, but I don't like these bugs. I don't like them in the slightest.

Drain fly
Mosquita de la humedad

The enigma of the mystery worms has been solved! They are drain flies! Wow! They’re so cuuuuuute <3 I also had no idea their larvae were so large.
So it turns out the larvae eat decaying organic matter and for this reason you tend to find drain flies around drains (hence their name haha!), and is also why we found them at the areas where we collect mosquito eggs. The adults themselves can subsist on nectar or even only water, as they only live for about two weeks.
I also read that the little hairs covering the adults’ bodies are water-repellant, which makes them difficult to drown; very interesting!

Moth flies in the subfamily Psychodinae
Although most people are familiar with the common bathroom moth fly (aka drain fly, Clogmia albipunctata), there are dozens of described species found worldwide.

Random thought: where did drain flies live before there were drains?
bogleech answered this already, coincidentally! I have had drain flies of various species including the household Clogmia albipunctata (haha. Clogmia) develop in containers where I macerate animal bones or dead leaves.
as often the case with household animals, there’s usually a lot more elsewhere that people don’t come into contact with and don’t realize exist! I believe there’s over 2,500 species in the family Psychodidae. one group of the drain flies are known as sandflies, and the subfamily name—Phlebotominae—hints at the fact that they’re hemtophagous (blood drinking) like mosquitoes! they’re the vectors of a few tropical diseases like leishmaniasis.
anyway, like cockroaches, house centipedes, silverfish, and pigeons among others, drain flies are an example of where the rare one or two synanthropic species become the most familiar to humans to the point of being synonymous with the larger group, even if they’re fairly unique among them

Sewer Fly
Clogmia albipunctata Sooty little sewer fly You creep me out, I cannot lie While sitting down to take a pee I spy you perched there, judging me And while I know you’re just a bug Your attitude seems rather smug Well camouflaged to look like ash You think I cannot briskly smash You on the tile and then we’ll see Who rules the bathroom, you or me But as I look around I find I am outnumbered by your…
