Hi! The thing about grrm and historical inaccuracies is that I don’t think that it’s about history, it’s about Wall Street and what would have happened if the upper class of his generation were in a vaguely medieval setting. Hence Cersei who wants an mba and Alicent Hightower having to give sexual favors to random ass men in hotd. I think that it’s basically satire for “me and my buddy Clive but what if in the land without law (can rape women but I am protected by the law) and with dragons”. And then they all get fucked anyway, because they are actually the kind of people whose “barbarianism” relies on the law

...huh. Um. See, the thing is, I agree with you that ASOIAF is not about history. However, both GRRM and his fanbase have said often enough that it is inspired by and/or based on European medieval history that I don't think it's responsible for me, as a medievalist, to shrug it off. As you yourself say, the world of ASOIAF reads as "a vaguely medieval setting," despite the innumerable and profound ways in which it is ahistorical.

I think it's absolutely worth pointing out the ways in which misogyny, sexism, and sexual abuse are not medieval rather than modern problems, but illustrate what Judith Bennett calls patriarchal equilibrium. And I do think that GRRM shows some writerly Schadenfreude in having terrible things happen to all of his characters; moreover, these things happen to his women characters in very gendered ways. But in his defense (!), I would not say that these books are a fantasy of masculine power. The men who abuse and exploit women in these books are generally terrible people. The abuse and exploitation of women -- which happens in a wide variety of ways, including at the hands of men exercising their power with relatively benign intentions -- is always represented as damaging and bad. And even if this were less unambiguous, I think it's really dangerous to assume that people writing about sexual violence must be secretly fantasizing about it.

In the closing minutes of Wales’s Five Nations meeting with France at Cardiff Arms Park in March 1976, the home side were resisting an onslaught by the visitors when the French wing Jean-François Gourdon found some space on the touchline by the north stand. Gourdon was then hit by a shuddering shoulder charge from Wales’s full-back, JPR Williams, that all but sent him spinning into the crowd. Williams raised his fist in triumph and Wales held on to win 19-13 and complete a seventh grand slam.

In truth, Williams’s tackle was far from legal, but the incident remains an indelible image in the minds of Welsh rugby supporters – that and a photograph of the Bridgend No 15 with blood pouring from his face after being trampled by a visiting All Blacks boot. International rugby in the 1970s was not for the squeamish, and JPR survived by being not just supremely skilful, but as hard as nails.

Williams, who has died aged 74 from bacterial meningitis, would forever be known as JPR, the three most evocative initials in the sport. Only France’s Serge Blanco could rival him as the greatest full-back in history. When the law-makers of the international board prevented the ball from being kicked directly into touch in 1968 it gave the opportunity for Williams and others such as Scotland’s Andy Irvine to forge a template for how a modern attacking full-back should play.

The source of Williams’s famous hardness is surprising. Unusually for top-class players in Wales, he came from a comfortable middle-class home. Williams once told of how he turned up at a Wales Schoolboys’ trial in a Rolls Royce. His upbringing, he said served as an incentive “to prove to my mates that I was tough and one of them”.

John Peter Rhys was born in Bridgend to Peter and Margaret, both doctors. Margaret had been born in Rochdale, so young John could have played for England, but that was not a subject much discussed in the Williams household.

It was on the lawns of Wimbledon rather than the muddy fields of Cardiff Arms Park or Bridgend that Williams first made his mark as a sportsman of renown. As a 17-year-old, he won the 1966 British junior tennis title at Wimbledon, beating David Lloyd in the final.

He was gaining a reputation at rugby in Bridgend, where his father was the club president and doctor. By this time Williams had left Bridgend grammar school for Millfield school in Somerset, where future Wales scrum-half Gareth Edwards was a pupil.

From Millfield, Williams went to St Mary’s hospital in London and had a spell at the London Welsh club. He chose to continue playing the amateur sport rather than tennis and concentrate on his medical studies, his father having told him that he would not make a living as a professional sportsman.

He was still a teenager when he was called into a Wales squad to tour Argentina in the summer of 1968. There were great expectations of the new boy John Williams, as he was then known, when he made his full Wales debut against Scotland at Murray Field the following February.

Wales had a new coach, their former captain Clive Rowlands. Barry John at fly-half scored the final try in Wales’s 17-3 win. Something was brewing in Wales and the 70s were a golden age. Once Phil Bennett, alongside Edwards, established himself as Barry John’s natural heir and once JPR was joined by the wings JJ Williams and Gerald Davies, Wales became an unstoppable force in northern hemisphere rugby. At the heart of their team was JPR, instantly recognisable with his Elvis-Presley style sideburns, flowing hair and socks often pulled down to his ankles.

What set him apart was his success as an attacking player which, allied to that rock-solid defensive play, made him a permanent fixture in the Wales side between his 1969 debut and 1981, when he retired from international rugby. He burnished his reputation on the successful British Lions tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, playing in all four Tests on each. Williams had been on a Wales tour to New Zealand in 1969 when they were humbled by the All Blacks in two Tests so the 2-1 series win by the Lions two years later came as a big relief.

In Auckland he settled the series with a long-range drop-goal in the final Test. It came as a surprise to his team-mates, but England’s Bob Hiller, his full-back understudy on that tour, had apparently joked to him that he could not consider himself a proper international until he had dropped a goal.

In South Africa three years later, Williams was heroic again as Willie John McBride’s team prevailed in an often brutal series win over the Springboks. The Lions’ call of “99” often signalled all-out punch-ups, and the sight of Williams racing upfield to thump the much larger South African lock Moaner van Heerden was a memorable one, though, as Williams confessed later it was not something of which he was particularly proud.

Williams won 55 caps for Wales, five of them as captain in 1978-79; in 1977 he was appointed MBE. In between those Lions victories he scored the final try in the Barbarians’ famous victory over the All Blacks at the Arms Park in 1973, and after retiring from the international stage played club rugby for Tondu as a back-rower until 2003, when he was 54.

He met Scilla (Priscilla) Parkin at medical school, and they married in 1973. His principal post as a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon was at the Princess of Wales hospital, Bridgend (1986–2004). Williams rarely joined the ranks of retired players who became pundits, but he was always happy to talk about a stellar career, particularly the 11 games against England, in which he always ended on the winning side.

He is survived by Scilla and their children, Lauren, Annie, Fran and Peter.

1) Last book I read:

The Tyrant Baru Cormorant; I finished it a while ago and have been reading incredibly slowly since because, in the wise words of @pillowfriendly, the problem with baru cormorant is that many things are not as good as baru cormorant. Go. Read. Masquerade.

2) A book I recommend:

Hmm, this one's tough (too many options). City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett. Not the most prominent book on Tumblr, from what I've seen, but the first book in one of my favorite series, and has some absolutely staggeringly good worldbuilding and politics, as well as surprisingly well-done action.

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

Sphere by Michael Crichton. I read it when I was 15. Started it at about 6 pm and was late for school the next day because I read the whole thing that night. Truly terrifying book for a kid, but lives in my head to this day.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more)

Name of the Wind--I reread Kingkiller Chronicle about once every year or two. It's my all time favorite series, I think.

5) A book on my TBR

SO MANY SO FUCKING GODDAMN MANY. I need to finish Grave of Empires, so Three Axes to Fall would be next, I think.

6) A book I’ve put down

Exordia. I'm.... so sorry. I want to get back to it someday, but I picked it up when I was in a bit of a reading slump and just wasn't in the mood. Modern dialogue is fun to write, but I don't like reading it, and something about the whole tone of the book just felt too Tom Clancy/Clive Cussler to me.

7) A book on my wish list

Shorefall! Robert Jackson Bennett has another series he just finished, the Founders, and I absolutely adored the first installment, Foundryside, but my library doesn't have Shorefall.

8) A favourite book from childhood

Eragon. It's not good, but I kept the copy my parents got me when I was four years old. I didn't finish it then, of course, but I went back and plugged through when I was about six. First chapter book I ever read, and my introduction to fantasy as a whole. Immense sentimental value, but would be kindling if I came across it today.

9) A book you would give a friend

I've given several friends copies of Red Rising, specifically to break them out of YA. The first book is sort of on the cusp between YA and New Adult, so I think it's a great way to show people "Hey, there's way more out there that'll actually cater to your intelligence."

10) The most books you own by a single author

Well... I have Eye of the World through Crown of Swords from my now-abandoned attempt to find all of Wheel of Time in paperback at used bookstores, and that's 7, so that.

11) A nonfiction book you own

I've got a copy of the 2017 AP style guide on my desk for work. It's pretty fun to reference, actually.

12) what are you currently reading

Four, sort of! Gardens of the Moon, the first Malazan Book of the Fallen book; Sleeping Giants, something I found on Libby and was reasonably well hooked by; Rubicon, which I found at the library's discarded-book sale; and Don Quixote, which I may or may not finish before the heat-death of the universe.

13) what are you planning on reading next?

I got a copy of A Farewell to Arms because I've sorta picked up through the grapevine that Hemingway might be up my alley. I don't really read classics, so I'm interested to see how it goes.

Favorite Costume Movie and Television Productions Set During CHRISTMAS

Below is a list of my favorite costume movie and television productions set during the Christmas holidays. The list is in chronological order:

FAVORITE COSTUME MOVIE AND TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS SET DURING CHRISTMAS

1. "Three Godfathers" (1936) - Richard Boleslawski directed this seventh movie adaptation of Peter B. Kyne's 1913 novel about three bank robbers who become godfathers to a newborn child of a dying mother, after robbing a bank in 19th century Arizona. The movie starred Chester Morris, Lewis Stone and Walter Brennan.

2. "The Lion in the Winter" (1968) - Peter O'Toole and Oscar winner Katherine Hepburn starred in this movie adaptation of James Goldman's 1966 Broadway play about the personal and political conflicts of Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their children and guests during Christmas 1183. Directed by Anthony Harvey, the movie co-starred Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, John Castle and Nigel Terry.

3. "A Christmas Story" (1983) - Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley starred in this acclaimed adaptation of Jean Shepherd's 1966 book, "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash". Bob Clark directed.

4. "A Christmas Carol" (1984) - George C. Scott starred as Ebenezer Scrooge in this television adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella. The television movie was directed by Clive Donner.

5. "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" (1994-1995) - David Suchet starred as Hercule Poirot in this television adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1938 novel in which the Belgian detective investigates the murder of a multi-millionaire during the Christmas holiday. Directed by Edward Bennett, Philip Jackson co-starred.

6. "Nero Wolfe - (1.07) "Christmas Party" (2001) - Maury Chaykin and Timothy Hutton starred in this adaptation of Rex Stout's 1957 novella, "The Christmas-Party Murder", about detective Nero Wolfe and his assistant Archie Goodwin's investigation of wealthy furniture designer's murder at a Christmas party. Holly Dale directed.

7. "4.50 From Paddington aka What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw" (2004) - Geraldine McEwan starred in this television adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1957 novel about Miss Jane Marple's investigation of a murder briefly witnessed by an old friend aboard a train. Directed by Andy Wilson, the television movie co-starred John Hannah, Pam Ferris and David Warner.

8. "The Last Tycoon - (1.06) "A Brady-American Christmas" (2017) - This holiday episode was featured in the television adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1941 unfinished novel about 1930s Hollywood. Created by Billy Ray, the television series starred Matt Bomer, Lily Collins and Kelsey Grammer.

9. "The Man Who Invented Christmas" (2017) - Dan Stevens starred as Charles Dickens in this movie adaption of Les Standiford's 2008 book about the author's creation of his 1843 novella, "A Christmas Carol". The movie was directed by Bharat Nalluri.

10. "Victoria" - (2.09) "Comfort and Joy" - This holiday episode aired as finale for Season Two of the ITV series, "VICTORIA", which re-counted Queen Victoria's early years on the throne, between 1837 and 1851. Created by Daisy Goodwin, the series starred Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
