The Weather
A study in Clinical Infectious Diseases reported “that the risk of developing symptomatic illness within 14 days was 5 times greater when contacts were exposed to an asymptomatic [COVID]-positive child in their household.” Nearly 11% of household contacts developed symptoms within 14 days of exposure. The study also found, during a 3-month follow-up, that 6 out of 77 asymptomatic children developed Long COVID. The likelihood of developing symptoms from asymptomatic exposure is higher than we might expect. Continue to spread awareness of asymptomatic spread and advocate for increased infection control measures at your local schools.
COVID wastewater levels are decreasing. As of 3/29/24, New Mexico is “Very High,” Arkansas and Kentucky are “High,” and the rest of the states are “Moderate” to “Low” levels of SARS-CoV-2 detected in wastewater.
Tumblr media
Wastewater levels continue to show a downward trend in the provisional data (gray shaded area) in all regions. The national wastewater levels are overall indicated as “Low.” While lower wastewater levels indicate decreased spread, it is important to continue to take precautions against infection. Holidays and spring breaks may bring people in closer proximity, so be sure to wear a mask to protect yourself and your community.

Wins
As we work to take more actions against the removal of vital public health measures, we remind you that you can still watch the recording of the People’s CDC press conference from March 13 and read the press release here. We would also like to remind you of the pre-proof of the People’s CDC External Review in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine Focus. The publication highlights the shortcomings of the CDC’s approach to public health and recommends a more equitable pandemic response.
News sources have published articles about the frustrations of people who continue to take COVID precautions. Time Magazine published an article presenting “both sides,” highlighting protest from people working with the CDC and concern from citizens and experts alike. While we are glad to see our voices be published in popular media, we are also saddened that “returning to normal” under economic and political pressure is so valued.
Treatments
Invyvid has received an FDA emergency use authorization for Pemgarda, a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for people with immunocompromising conditions. Pemgarda is approved for people 12 and older with moderate to severe immunocompromise who are less likely to produce an adequate immune response to COVID vaccination alone. According to a press release from Invyvid, Pemgarda will release to market “imminently.”
Pre-exposure prophylaxis is commonly used for folks at high risk for exposure to HIV. As access to PrEP for HIV has been instrumental in keeping people safe, we hope that PrEP for COVID will be a useful tool for our community members with immune compromise. We also urge you to continue to wear high-quality masks and take other precautions to protect those most vulnerable.
Long COVID
People Magazine recently published an article highlighting an essay by Ziyad Al-Aly, physician and clinical epidemiologist, that pools data from several studies showing that COVID infection has lasting impacts on brain health. The review points out several impacts to cognitive functioning, including memory loss, spatial reasoning, and planning. Additionally, imaging studies have shown significant impact to brain tissue from inflammation, among other processes. The publication may be validating to those who experience lower cognitive function following COVID infection, including brain fog and memory dysfunction.
Take Action
We know that taking precautions–including masking, testing, and improving air quality–helps prevent the spread of airborne viral infection. Introducing more stringent precautions slowed outbreaks in the hematology ward of a hospital. The CDC recently released tips to improve ventilation. Help us urge the CDC to take other measures, including reinstating isolation periods.
Additionally, the home Test to Treat program is ending in April 2024. The program provides un-or-underinsured adults with free COVID and flu tests. If a participant in the program tests positive, they can also receive free healthcare via telehealth services. Join us to help save the program that helps so many at-risk people!

Our laboratory developed a co-culture model of mealworm larvae and probiotics, representing a new pre-clinical model to determine the effects of probiotics on the gut microbiome and the metabolic phenotype in the host. Therapy is important.
As long as you get the right therapist for you. If you feel like your therapist is not listening to you, if hers/his methods seem clumsy, if you feel like s/he’s just delving into your past without giving you no tools to deal with your present and your future... change therapist.  My first therapist, once she found out I was about to marry, only asked me how I was feeling about the preparation for the big event, no matter how much I told her it was no issue for me. I wanted to talk about a recent trauma I had (I had found my neighbour’s dog hanging dead from her terrace after months of neglect, after I tried to warn everybody about the situation and nobody would listen to me and they just told me to not worry, that the dog was ok, especially the police). I needed tools to deal with my fears, with my obsessions and my health issues. I spent a lot of time and a lot of money on her, and after a while I could see she was tired of seeing me, she was bored and didn’t really know what to do with me. I think I’ve spent way too much time in her clinic. After a few years, after a really bad year in which I think I’ve got to know depression and I was stuck into a mental loop that would not allow me to feel good about anything (I was diagnosed FMS - with all the perks! including cramps, chronic fatigue, IBS, vulvodynia, TMJ, dysphagia etc etc etc - and psoriasis and I was having real bad eye dysfunctions that I later found out to be a severe exophoria about to become exotropia), I looked on the internet for a therapist near me that was specialized in treating OCDs, depression, eating disorders and that was savvy about anxiety management.  I’m so glad I found the guy I’m currently seeing, because he has been giving me very simple but practical tools to unlock my thinking process, has taught me things about the importance of being centered on yourself and how to let go of my need to control the world around me.
I decided to go back to a therapist after a severe breakdown I had while on holidays with my friends.
We were in Mostar, Bosnia, and somehow I got into some kind of fight with one of my friends and started crying in the middle of the street, outside of the restaurant (which btw was such a nice, authentic place, recommended by a local man we had met in the morning. The owner even went buying watermelon just for us.) One of my friends told me “What’s happening to you? I know you, you’re not like this”. And in my mind I wanted to tell her - or maybe I even told her - “No, you don’t know me, I’m like this, I’ve just reached my event horizon”. I knew what was wrong with me, I knew it perfectly. I thought the world was wrong and I had to do something to fix it. I felt I had to protect people from themselves, I could see a hidden danger in everything they did, and I felt menaced by their carelessness. I was oppressive, aggressive, from the outside it was impossible to tell that I was enjoying spending time with my friends (but inside I was, even if the feeling was dampened by fear). Moreover, I was infecting my husband with my aggressiveness. I could recognize my issue but I had no clue what to do about it. That’s when I decided I had to find a new, better therapist. The first one had fixed almost nothing (besides helping me being less angry while driving, at first). I’m glad I did.
Implementing into my life the new tools I’ve been given is not proving very easy, but the therapist is doing a good job reassuring me that I’m doing great. In fact, I’m doing so much better now.  Whatever your problem is, find yourself a therapist you trust. Don’t be afraid to ditch yours if you don’t like her/him.

Importance of Maternal & Child Health To Society
“If you want to know how strong a country’s health system is, look at the well being of its mothers” (Clinton H, 2012). In developing countries maternal and child health is still a major concern. There is also little to no insight on occupational therapy involvement in communities.
Tumblr media
When a country has a poor maternal health system, it affects negatively on society. Complications during birth may cause mortality of the mother or/and the child or disability in a child. In most cases, you would find that these complications could have been prevented or managed if there are enough health services for pregnant women. In South Africa some children are diagnosed with cerebral palsy which was caused by nurses who did not provide proper service to the mother giving birth. This also applies to child mortality. Last year a baby fell to his death at the Clinic as the mother gave birth without any assistance in Mamelodi. Recently there had been a case where nurses in KwaNongoma chased away a pregnant lady who was about to give birth and was helped by a taxi driver to give birth. The taxi driver and the mother were compensated for the poor service. In my humble opinion, having to issue out compensatory funds could have been prevented and that money could have been used to develop the Nongoma community. Mothers are now enlightened on their constitutional rights and suing DOH for poor services for instance when a child becomes disabled due to negligence. How are we then moving forward as a developing country if millions of rands are being consumed for compensation instead of development?
“Maternal mental health is a state of well- being in which a mother realises her own abilities can cope with normal stressors of life, can work productively, fruitfully and is able to make a contribution in her community” (WHO). There are many factors which contribute to the mental health of pregnant mothers and mothers who have children namely, poverty, and poor support. Due to gender-based discrimination, society continues to fail women in developing countries. There is a SoWhatImPregnant hashtag that has been trending on Twitter, where women share their stories where they were mistreated or fired at work because they were pregnant. Can you believe that? In this age, there are women who are unfairly dismissed or had unpaid maternity leave. There was one lady who reported that her boss actually asked her if she got pregnant on purpose so as to have ‘free holidays’. The employee made her working conditions a horror so she could resign. It was so intense in such a way that she got a miscarriage. A community can be full of unfunctional mothers just because of how they are treated.
According to Rahman, A…, et al 2013, children of depressed mothers are more likely to be at risk for health, behavioural and developmental issues. This contributes to intergenerational disadvantages that pile up throughout the life span. It is basically a cycle- a depressed mother has a child with mental health problems. That child develops into an adult with some of those issues, creating a society known to have mental issues increasing alcohol and drug abuse, crime, and violence within the society.
A Community can enable or inhibit the occupational engagement of individuals living with or without disabilities. The implication of occupational therapy within the community is to enable the community to participate in their occupations as best as possible. As there are individual needs, so as there are community needs. Occupational therapy tries to reduce whatever that hinders the community to function effectively. Where I am currently based, we do health promotion on early childhood development in clinics and screen babies as they are waiting in queues with their mothers. By doing so we find a lot of referrals which promote early intervention for children who present with learning difficulties. We also get to provide intervention on children with disabilities as these mothers would report that they only attend occupational therapy once a month, which barely has a significance in most children. We get to make those changes as we are there weekly. There is also a support group programme for mothers who have children living with disabilities which we tend to initiate. Most of the times mothers are taken into consideration and it is a great responsibility to take care of a child living with disabilities. This programme is to reduce depression and burden to these mothers so they feel part of t society.
Prevention is better than cure. Maternal and child health should be a priority in every society as it prevents and manages so many dysfunctions in the community. Occupational therapy is an essential tool in the community in Maternal and child health. A community member reported how much difference OT has made in that community: there are less children with discovered to have developmental delays in late primary as we focus on early childhood intervention. At the end of the day, as much as we all want to live in a safe, functional society, we all have a role in order to achieve that: especially in maternal and child health.

To Find Veterinarian Alberta Is The Best Location To Check Out
By Thomas Foster
Veterinarians refer to animal professionals whose work involves diagnosing and treating diseases and dysfunctions in animals. Part of the job involves researching medical conditions that affect livestock, pets, and even wild animals. There are those who restrict their services in animal clinics so that people can take their sick animals for treatment. On the other hand, there are also those who specialize in fieldwork so that they go to clients in their homes or farms. When in Need of Veterinarian Alberta should be visited. These professionals have many duties. The first thing they do is determining the cause of the sickness before they treat the animal. Fully diagnosis may be facilitated using different diagnostic procedures like MRI and x-ray. The results after examination assist in making diagnosis which is then followed by treatment. For injured animals, vets usually treat and dress the wounds sustained. These professionals also perform surgery on animals for serious medical conditions such as tumors and cancerous cells. This usually requires a lot of knowledge in using certain surgical as well as diagnostic equipment and tools like x-ray machines. Testing for various diseases is also part of the job. Vets administer vaccines against diseases that require vaccination. A vet also gives counsel to animal owners on the kind of care they should give their animals in different situations. This implies that they work very closely with pet and animal owners. As a result a vet must have good communications skills to assist them in passing information to others. The animal or pet owner also explains the displayed symptoms to the vet who then uses the information in making diagnosis and during examination. Part of the job involves euthanizing animals that can no longer be left to live. Euthanizing of animals is a procedure that is largely allowed in many countries and is performed under various conditions. For instance, a vet may euthanize an animal that is terminally ill, too old to live, or badly injured. Also, if the animal poses a serious risk to human life or property, euthanizing may be an option to contain the situation. This line of work involves a lot of serious risks. For instance, one can sustain injuries from aggressive animals due to pain or fear. Such animals may inflict injury through scratching, kicking, or biting. Infectious diseases such as rabies may also be contracted when working with infected animals. Thus, safety precautions must be taken at all times when working. When aspiring to be a vet, one should be prepared to work for long hours during the day. One may also be required to work on weekends, holidays, and even at night in some situations. Such situations are usually emergencies that cannot be ignored. Many vets work for more than 50 hours in a week. To become a vet a person must meet certain minimal academic qualifications. Attaining a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine is a great step toward becoming a vet. This doctorate is to be attained from a recognized licensed academic training institution. A cross the world in many countries it is also a requirement that a vet acquires a permit before starting their practice.

For Veterinarian Alberta Is Worth Visiting
By Thomas Foster
An expert whose job is to diagnose and treat diseases and dysfunctions in animals is known as a veterinarian. Their work extends to researching medical conditions affecting pets, livestock and wild animals. A part of these professionals restrict their services in animal clinics where people take their animals for treatment. Another group specializes in taking their services to clients where they treat animals on farms and homes. When in search of Veterinarian Alberta should be given priority. The responsibilities that vets are charged with are many and vast. They are required to examine sick animals to determine the cause of sickness. Medical examinations are made easier and more effective with diagnostic tests such as MRI tests and x-ray scans. Diagnoses are then made based on the results obtained from the examinations. Euthanizing animals is part of the job in this career. Many countries have made it legal to euthanize animals in various situations. Vets are allowed to euthanize animals with the consent of their owners if they are too old to live longer or if they are terminally sick. Animals that are injured badly beyond recovery or those that pose serious threat to human life should also be euthanized. The most humane method should be used to euthanize such animals. There are several risks involved in working as a veterinarian. First, working with animals that are in pain or are frightened may result in being kicked, bitten, or scratched. Animals may also contract serious viral diseases and infections such as rabies among others. In an attempt to vaccinate or treat such animals exposes the vet to the possibility of infection. Every person aspiring to be a vet must be prepared for long working hours during the day and even at night. They must also prepare to work on holidays, over the weekends and even late in the night as the situation demands. Most of these cases are emergencies that cannot otherwise be ignored. Statistics indicate that in a week most vets work for more than fifty hours. Working as a vet requires one to attain certain academic requirements. The lowest acceptable level of education is a doctoral degree in veterinary Medicine. One must attain the degree from an academic institution that is accredited and well recognized. One must also have a license issued by the state they intend to work in.

Surgery and diagnosis usually require one to use sophisticated surgical and diagnostic tools and equipment such as MRI machines. Vets also have the responsibility of administering vaccines against various diseases in animals. They also test for various diseases. It is the duty of vets to advise animal owners on the best care to provide to their animals in various situations. That means that vets work closely with owners of animals. Thus, having good communication skills so as to be able to pass information to other people is very important. Also, one will need to listen to the animal owner as they explain the symptoms the animal has been showing before an examination is done to make a diagnosis. Euthanizing animals is part of the job in this career. Many countries have made it legal to euthanize animals in various situations. Animals also contract deadly viral diseases like rabies among others. Attempts to treat or vaccinate such animals only serve to expose the vet to the risk of contracting the infection. Vets work for several hours in a day, one of the longest hours. One will also have their weekends, nights, and holidays interrupted regularly so that they can attend to emergency situations. It is not uncommon to come across a vet who works for over 50 hours in a week. There are specific academic requirements that one must achieve in order to work as a vet. The most important is to attain a doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine. The degree must be attained from an accredited academic institution. A state license is also mandatory before one can start working as a vet in any country worldwide.
