I am so sorry to trouble you with obvious BS, but a friend found these pendants while metal detecting and was hoping someone would be able to translate the one on the left. Would you know where I could go? The cartouche beginning with a big bust of (Maat? Isis??) is throwing me…

Oh that's not total bullshit, the one on the right is supposed to be the Rosetta Stone and the one on the left is a rather wonky version of the cartouche of Cleopatra VII Philopator (aka the Cleopatra). And by wonky I mean "they left off the initial K in favour of fitting in her bust so now it just reads Leopatra". (And made some other weird positional choices but like. Leopatra. That's objectively hilarious.)

Here's the same cartouche rendered horizontally, from the temple of Edfu:

Read from right to left in this case; the sign directly above the lion is the one they left off!

#also no worries re: bothering me #this stuff is easy for me but if you don't know where to start looking it can be like ??? lmao #though a good rule of thumb is when it's a cartouche it's either cleopatra tutankhamun or nefertiti #or a phonetic translation of a modern person's name #in the former case the website pharaoh.se is EXTREMELY useful #in the latter one just look up one of those graphics that list egyptian signs side by side with the latin alphabet #actually you can do thay for cleopatra's cartouche anyway because her name is originally Greek and Egyptians wrote non-Egyptian words #and names phonetically #(when it's a modern cartouche necklace I mean to say - obv all kings had cartouches or serekhs but if you get a mkdern necklace thing it's #9 times out of 10 one of the ones I mentioned or a modern person's name)

Why not Netflix make a documentary about Nefertiti or Hatshepsut? These were women pharaohs that were also famous and not mixed from other countries like Cleopatra who was greek.

the bad thing is that people will never fact check the resources, not even look for a more accurate documentary like in BBC or National geographic who at least put more effort in historical accuracy. also Netflix is more popular platform so 😬 here we go again with Hollywood trying to twist Greek history.

For the millionth time Cleopatra was of Greek heritage and ruled Egypt in time period were the Ptolemaic dynasty was ruling. So she can't be included in African history. If they wanted to include african history like I said before.... Nefertiti...

Good addition! I am not sure Nefertiti was Black though? From her busts and her reconsideration of her face she looks Mediterranean ("Caucasian")
