Sorry for not posting a lot for a while. I’ve been working on these guys since I made a list of my characters. Apparently, Scorpio was the only diesel in sunny side island! so I decided to make three more diesels. Rob, Damien, and cotton spider! You can tell who is the customer is diesel and the ones are just normal! As you can tell cotton spider is like a spider like diesel who gets a job quick and smart but also flirty~ Damien is this gentle diesel who loves to help out, and when kids draw drawings of them or himself as a gift, he will hang them in his shed((of course, with workers help)) now with Rob is a different story. Yes, he is a grumpy type diesel and a big is from the bunch unlike Scorpio, but from the grumpiness in this grouchy behavior-without anyone looking for a gentle soul, you just need to find a good ways to get it out. Otherwise, they are a good pair of working diesels and they don’t care if their friends are steam engines or other diesels. They treat each other like great pals or at least Rob tries to…
Human form so I’ll be in the next part of this so be prepared !!!

Heavily inspired by Pistons&Gears Inc's Traintober post
Tumblr media
[1957]
One lone shunting diesel purred slowly into a yard. Trucks lined the sidings, murmuring and chuckling as he approached.
“Good moorrrning…” oozed an oily voice. “Pleased to meet you, Duck.”
The diesel’s eye twitched.
“Is that James? And Henry? And Gordon, too?” Sneered a second, much higher voice. “I am delighted to meet such famous engines.”
Diesel’s jaw hardened, both at the blatant mockery, and the mentions of a certain painfully brightly colored region.
“Hey, that was pretty good! Though I kinda figure Diesel would have a lower tone than that.”
“I don’t have the range for that. I can’t get my voice as low as you can.”
“What are you idiots doing?” Diesel finally lost what little patience he ever had, and rolled up alongside the two shunters - identical to him in every way except face and number.
“We’re practicing our ‘Devious Diesel’ impressions!” The two chorused in their horrible attempts of deep, scheming voices.
It was all Diesel could do not to snap. Was that what they thought of him? How was he the villain in all this?? Utterly ridiculous. It was all that damn pannier tank and his tricks. If not for him, Diesel would still be on Sodor, milling with the famous engines.
“I can’t say I’m familiar.” Diesel lied, trying to sound unimpressed.
“You aren’t familiar with the great works of Wilbert Awdry?” One shunter asked, sounding genuinely surprised.
Diesel tensed again. “I think I’ve heard of a children’s author by that name.” He put emphasis on ‘children’s author’ in an attempt to display his lack of interest in the subject matter.
“Oh. Well, he just introduced an engine based on one of us! He’s this really neat villain character who has this huge rivalry with-”
Diesel growled, and rolled away, having had more than enough of the “conversation”.

Traintober | Day 4 - Devious
Green Arrow finds that Diesel likes having him around to listen to him, especially since he's mute and can't divulge his secrets. But what will happen when Arrow regains his voice? Takes place during Young Iron - Green with Envy, when Green Arrow has his voicebox stolen.
Tumblr media
~~~
“Why hello there new engine!”
Green Arrow nervously looked around to find a black Class 08 leering at him. Said Class 08 was completely black, unlike the usual members of his class who had yellow hazard stripes. He frowned and narrowed his eyes in response.
“No need for that look, I’m just trying to be friendly!” The Diesel grinned but Green Arrow didn’t believe him.
The V2 was aware of this certain Class 08’s reputation in the Railway Series books and stared at him in disbelief.
“Oh right, you’re mute,” the Diesel suddenly realised and Arrow began scowling at him. “Apologises, apologies I meant no offence.”
Green Arrow simply hissed steam and hurried off in a cloud of steam, his displeasure evident.
Not dissuaded, the Class 08 quickly sped after him.
“Ah I’ve upset you,” Diesel quickly lamented. “A deep shame, I was insensitive, allow me to introduce myself, I am Diesel.”
Green Arrow snorted and rolled his eyes in response. To his surprise the Class 08 was not offended.
“I like being called just Diesel, it’s better than just having a number,” Diesel proudly exclaimed but Green Arrow looked doubtful. “We all can’t be named after companies like you are friend.”
Arrow decided to ignore the Class 08 as he made his way to his next job yet still Diesel insisted on following him.
“I’ve seen how the others treat you and I think it’s terrible, just terrible,” The Class 08 lamented. “A fine standing engine such as yourself being subjected to such discrimination.”
More than anything Green Arrow wanted to tell the Diesel to back off but his lack of voice made that hard. He was however able to wheeshed steam in the Diesel’s face and sped up down the line.
The Diesel shouted at him but he did not hear him as he put as much distance between the both of them.
~~~
Over the next few months, the diesel continuously approached him whenever he saw him. Green Arrow didn’t really understand but Diesel seemed to find some sort of comfort in just talking to him while he rolled around or moved to jobs. He seemed to look forward to or even crave having someone to complain to.
Maybe he wanted company, maybe he was genuinely trying to be a friend but Green Arrow didn’t have the ability to tell him to go away for the longest time.
On the plus side, Diesel gave him an insight into how the other engines interacted. How Diesel often spied James and Edward behind the sheds when they both had spare time. How Gordon liked to sneak out to the Docks to talk to the massive cruise ships that came by. Or how Henry liked to spend time with Peter Sam whenever he was near Sodor's Narrow Gauge Railway.
He was learning a lot from the Diesel and he didn’t have to prompt or try to provoke a single word out of him.
Maybe that was why he continued to be mute around the Diesel, even when his voice box had been returned to him.
He didn’t want to spoil Diesel’s little exercises in talking to him, knowing that he found solace in the silent steam engine.
“Hello, Mr Arrow!” Came the voice of the small navy blue tank engine sat near cranky on the Docks. “It’s good to see you!”
He liked the Well Tank Engine. He wasn’t like any of the other engines on the island who held a grudge against him and seemed always happy to see Arrow. It was a nice reprieve when it felt like the entire island, bar Edward, was against him.
“I’ve forgotten your name sorry,” Green Arrow apologised to the little engine.
“That’s a’rite guv! Name’s Sonny!” The Tank engine grinned, not even offended by his forgetfulness.
“Sonny! Right! Hello to you too!” Green Arrow grinned back.
Sonny’s attention was caught by something behind him.
“Ay-O how goes it Diesel?!” Sonny greeted his friend but the Diesel didn’t answer.
Green Arrow could feel the glare of the Class 08 searing into his boiler as he came up beside him. The Diesel stopped, gave an annoyed ‘humph’ and sped off leaving a very confused Sonny.
“What was that about ay?” The Well Tank engine grunted confused.
Green Arrow said nothing and only stared after the retreating Class 08.
~~~
"So you can talk now huh?" Diesel oiled at Arrow as he found the Class 08 near Harwick Station.
"Not a lot of people approve of me having my voice back," Green Arrow admitted to Diesel. "I figured you would be upset."
"Upset?" Diesel scoffed, feigning his boastful attitude. "Why would I be upset?"
"Because maybe you thought that you wouldn't have someone to listen to your grievances any more," Arrow pointed out and Diesel glared at him.
"You've probably gone and told all my secrets to all your steamie friends!" Diesel sneered and Arrow gave a snort.
"What friends? I don't have friends, you see how the others treat me," Green Arrow argued and Diesel looked thoughtful.
"I suppose that he true, hehe, guess I had nothing to worry about," Diesel piped up.
Diesel started to oil away but Arrow spoke up again.
"You can still talk to me if you want, you actually helped me get a gauge on everyone else on this island you know," he offered. "I appreciate that."
Diesel stared at him and then smirked.
"Two outcasts just hanging out," he oiled and Arrow smirked in return. "But I'm not your friend, Steamie. I just liked to complain at you because you couldn't respond."
"Perhaps, but still, the offer is there," Arrow stood firm.
Diesel stared at him then humphed before meandering away. Without another world.
A few weeks later, the Class 08 was back to complaining at Arrow as if nothing happened, and Arrow was glad for it knowing that he was making Diesel at least a little bit happier.
(Here’s my Splodge headcanon.)
On the Other Railway, two dimwitted Class 08 shunters who weren’t really liked by steamies or fellow diesels alike, but they mean well and usually get the job done. One day, they met a Class 42 Warship diesel named Cockade, the big diesel was the only one who thought they deserved to be respected by their peers. One night, they discovered Cockade’s class are being withdrawn from service and they decided to say farewell to their one only friend, believing it was his end. To their surprise, Cockade returned to the sheds with some “illegal modifications”. From what they heard, Cockade got in touch with some local gangsters who had political connections and said he can have this second chance at life if he doesn’t muck it up. The two both noticed Cockade was a lot more aggressive and arrogant now and he seems to be treating them less as “friends” and more as henchmen. He also began to to refer himself as “Diesel 10”.
OK WAIT YOURE COOKING WITH THIS I LOVE IT
TTTE OC:
Name: Emmett
Gender: Gender neutral
Pronouns: any
Age: unknown as of now
Class: BR class 08
Nicknames: Emmett the strong (Skarloey), Shorty (other class 08s), Fierce worrier (Rusty)
Narrow or standard gauge: Narrow
Built: unknown as of now
Resident: Sodor
Former resident: Talyllyn railway
Work: Skarloey railway
Friend(s): Rusty, Diesel and Skarloey
Likes: being a helpful little shunter, getting to talk to Skarloey and Rusty. Seeing her older brother Diesel from time to time
Dislikes: Thomas because he scares Emmett, not being helpful and anyone who wants to hurt his friends and her older brother
Backstory: Emmett is a narrow gauge class 08 who was brought to sodor to help on the Skarloey railway with shunting. None of the other class 08s from BR liked Emmett because he was a narrow gauge instead of a standard gauge which promptly made other class 08s bully and harass her. Diesel despite what most people thought of him being a ruff nut in his words actually stood up for Emmett. Which made Emmett see Diesel as an older brother to him.
Side info: this is before the likes of Paxton, Sidney, Fernando, Splatter, Dodge, Arry and Bert was built because back then it was just Diesel and Emmett.
1960
As the 1960s began, the twins proved to be invaluable despite making some mistakes and causing accidents. Percy was deputized to speak on behalf of the Tidmouth Engines about purchasing Donald and Douglas, and they were acquired. However, there was another surprise in store as the Fat Controller also purchased Duck. The twins and Duck were relocated to the Tidmouth to Harwick branchline, while the fishing industry started to boom. The harbor board agreed to have D3102 be the pilot for Tidmouth and shunt the harbor. The harbor board also bought another Class 08 D3866. They were timid and barely spoke to anyone, just went on with their duties.
Edward's enthusiast train kept drawing more and more people to see the scenic side of Sodor, a slower-paced train that went from Tidmouth to Brendam and back.
In March of 1960, Edward had settled into his new life of pulling enthusiasts when James pulled into the yard. He complained about taking a Goods train, and Edward tried to make conversation with him while his fireman ran to get clearance from the signalman.
Edward sat and listened to James's complaints when he noticed James's driver climb out of his cab, annoyed. Edward watched him stop over to the signal box. James noticed it too and started to complain about the delay. Edward politely smiled and nodded along with James's rambling.
Soon, the pair heard the crunching of ballast, but Edward could still hear the driver and fireman in the signal box. To his shock, he heard giggling from James's cab. Confused, he looked and saw two schoolboys fiddling with James's controls. He hoped they didn't find his regulator when James suddenly shot forward as the school children jumped clear and scattered.
Edward and his crew gave chase, and James was yelling for help. Edward gave it his all, slowly but surely gaining on James. The main line was shut down as the two raced through Crosby. Edward was cheered on by the workmen and even Gordon, who was waiting for clearance as they shot past. As they neared Knapford, Edward's fireman wrapped the rope around James's buffer, and Edward slammed on his brakes.
They came to a stop just outside Knapford yard, and Edward's driver jumped across and closed James's regulator. James was eternally grateful to Edward, and all that Edward asked in return was to be treated better, to which James agreed.
Later that year, BR sent more types of diesel for trial at Sodor. It was stressful, and the engines and their crews had to work twice as hard to stay ahead. It was during this time that BR sent one of their newest diesel classes to Sodor. The class 28 Metrovick D5702 was sent to take over the Nor'wester.
Gordon was outraged. He had pulled the Express for nearly 40 years, and to have someone steal it from him made his safety valve burst. The diesel in question was rather polite and didn't try to start trouble. Gordon waited for him at Brendam Harbor as the Vicarstown bridge was out of order, and the poor diesel was stuck at Brendam for a week while BR and the Fat Controller came to an agreement.
While he was stuck there, the diesel, or Boco as he introduced himself, met Edward, and the two quickly became friends. It was also where he met Bill and Ben, the clay pit twins.
While Gordon was waiting for Boco, the twins played a prank on him, frightening him before Boco got the twins to scatter and an opportunity to introduce himself. Gordon surprisingly acted cordial towards the new engine, even wishing him well once he departed from Tidmouth. James, on the other hand, was shocked and called Gordon a traitor for befriending his replacement.
Hey yall sorry for the wait on this one life is a pain right now but I'm still trying to plug away at the timeline (and some short stories. Maybe coming as well but I'm sorry for the wait once the timeline is complete or near complete I'll start work on the Fic proper lucky for me after 1969 everything kinda stabilizes on Sodor that's my rambling done hope you all enjoy what I have been cooking up and I'll see ya -alt
Real quick question.
If you would use any hit era or cgi character in your series who would it be?
Ok, so this is an interesting question, and it's a hard one to answer because a number of the HiT and CGI characters are blank slates, I can press any characterization onto - so I'll run through a few I have considered for my ERS series:
Molly: she made it in! She's the only HiT era character who managed to sneak through the net, and that's because she's one of the few HiT era characters I felt had an interesting character (and design) and that gave me plenty to work with. You can read her spotlight book here.
Neville: I was sorely tempted when I was writing 'Searching for New Engines' to drop him in as a last-minute pickup. I even toyed with him replacing Emily in that particular book or being added with Murdoch. But I didn't in the end because I just didn't have much to say about Neville. I may change my mind and drop him in as a cameo, but otherwise don't expect him too soon.
Tumblr media
Rosie: Rosie and I have a... turbulent history. I've never liked her as a character, and her CGI reboot never clicked with me either (it was the weird valentine's day thing). However, I did consider having her cameo at least once in 'Salty the Dockside Diesel Engine' due to her connection to both Salty and Thomas - her class somewhat replaced the E2's in Southampton, and then along came Salty and the 07s and replaced both.
Samson: he also made it in! Samson stars in one story, because he was built by the same company as Neil and has a similar shape, making it feel like he could have also been an S&MR engine. You can find his story in 'Neil the Boxy Little Engine'.
Tumblr media
Den and Dart: Could be fun, but most likely as a cameo for diesels who live on the mainland (possibly at the NRM? I'm not sure).
Ryan: I have yet to decide where I fall on whether or not Ryan makes an appearance. He's a cool engine - and I like him, which is surprising for a CGI character - but at the same time, I must admit that it sort of felt like he was just a new version of Stanley to me. He may still appear as a cameo in a future story though!
Tumblr media
Stanley: I already have a Stanley in the series, and it isn't the silver tank engine, though he would be one of the more interesting ones to have around for the weird one-sided rivalry Thomas has with him.
Paxton and Sidney: Another pair who may or may not cameo. I will say that there have been a number of Class 08s who make background appearances in 'The World Famous Engine', and you could headcanon them as one or both of the pair.
Tumblr media
That's ten engines from past Season 7 that I debated plonking into my series. Thanks for the ask!
None of the above images belong to me. Thank you!
Another New "Red Steam On Southern Metals" char just dropped... Dynon Donk the Diesel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If he eerily looks similar to the BR Class 08 like Diesel... its because that they are really BR Class 11s exported to the VR as shunters.
Dynon Donk himself is now part of 707 Operation's fleet of preserved diesels... and R707 City Of Melbourne AKA Cerberus' crony.
Tumblr media
Dynon Donk in a black, very Dieselish livery... puts R707 to bed at Newport.
Canonically, Diesel is brother to Paxton, 'Aary, Bert, Sidney, Splatter and Dodge (there's also the mainland diesels but they're on the mainland so). Is that also canon in your au? If so how did the other diesels react to meeting little DJ?
Tbh, I don't really see all of the Class 08 diesels as brothers, I just see them as normal friends. I like to believe they all came from different factories and that Diesel was supposed to have a twin, but the idea was scrapped. It was until later on, the workers from Diesel's factory just suddenly thought "Hey, remember how we were gonna make that one black diesel during the 60s a little brother? Yeah, let's build him now" DJ was then built and shipped to Sodor the day after :)
TTTE headcanon story I had.
Splatter and Dodge were just every other BR Class 08 shunters just dimwitted and idiotic. One day they discovered that they’re being replaced and are soon to be scrapped like the other diesels. Realizing that Sodor might be their only hope for survival, they fled that night without getting caught. They eventually proved to the other engines that they were useful and had learnt from their past mistakes.
I like that head cannon. I wish we did get to see Splatter and Dodge again after Tatmr, I hope their alright.
StEx in real life Part 1: Engines
These are mostly headcanon, as there are either too many inconsistencies or not enough information to properly assign every character an irl basis, but I thought it would be fun to do. Explanations are provided for each.
Rusty: CNJ 2-6-2T
Tumblr media
Rusty was very hard to pick an irl counterpart for, as if he is based on a particular engine it's hard to tell as his helmet is misshapen to accommodate the actor's visibility. I feel like Rusty is more likely a tank steamer than a tender, and the helmet looks more like it has side tanks than any other shape. This 2-6-2 has a cowcatcher, a lamp on top of the smokebox, and even the same style of cab window as Rusty. So I'm satisfied to choose this as my irl counterpart for him.
Greaseball: EMD E9 A-unit
Tumblr media
This isn't really headcanon as Greaseball's helmet looks incredibly close to an E9, and they're very iconic and memorable Union Pacific's rolling stock.
Electra: SNCF CC40101
Tumblr media
This one is just literally fact. Electra is surprisingly the most specific character when it comes to their basis, as he has it printed on his helmet. It's an outdated choice for the "engine of the future", but he certainly looks retro-futuristic.
Poppa/Momma: Kansas Central 2-6-0
Tumblr media
This one is very contradictory to what little info we have on the Old Steamer's class, but I decided to go with it. Poppa wears the Kansas Central logo on his hat, and given their similar designs I choose to believe Momma is from the same company. In Broadway Poppa is called "the Big Boy", but to my knowledge no UP Big Boys ever worked for KCS, and as the KCS logo lasted longer than the Big Boy line I prefer to use that. I love the idea of Poppa and Momma being old-fashioned American steamers, and this was the only KCS I could find.
Greaseball's gang
These ones are honestly just pure headcanon and very self-indulgent based on some of my favourite diesels. Felt weird leaving them out but trust me, there's nothing in canon to justify these.
Tank: KM ML 4000
Tumblr media
Lube: BR Class 122
Tumblr media
Gear: BR Class 08
Traintober | Day 16 - Purpose
Devious Diesel reflects on his purpose. Mavis helps him out.
~~~
Tumblr media
~~~
Diesel stared at the back of the huge green tender that blocked his way, his radiator feeling hotter than usual.
Ever since Gordon’s brother, the Flying Scotsman had taken up residence on the island, all the steamies were in such a disgusting joyous mood. It irritated him to no end.
“Oi Flying Fat Tender!” He snicked at the engine before him and almost immediately the engine in front of him hissed out a cloud of steam in response.
“What did you just call me?!” The engine shrilled angrily, reversing onto the line beside him and to his shock, it wasn’t the Flying Scotsman. Instead, it was a furious female engine that looked similar to Scotsman save for the large smoke deflectors on the sides of her smoke box. An official-looking crest was affixed to said deflectors with the word, ‘Tornado’ below it.
Diesel thought it best to apologise as he had genuinely mistaken her for the Scotsman who didn’t actually mind the banter. But apologising meant being wrong and Diesel did not like being wrong.
“You heard me steamie!” Diesel sneered instead of apologising.
The engine eyed him with disdain.
“You must be Diesel,” she observed, her voice full of distaste. “Devious Diesel, the unpleasant Class 08 who hasn’t changed in the best part of a century.”
Ouch. Her words cut him deep but his sneer remained on his face.
“Yup that’s me,” Diesel proudly declared. “The Devious Diesel.”
The engine humphed and looked away from him, irritated by his presence.
“Who are you, I’ve never heard of ‘Tornado’ before,” Diesel oiled at her and the engine looked back at him. “Been here many years, you must be another of those preserved Steamies.”
“Preserved?” Tornado looked insulted. “I’m not preserved, I’m a brand new engine! I’m not even 10 years old!”
“New? New!” Diesel was flabbergasted. “Steam engines are obsolete! Why would they build new ones?!”
Tornado eyed him with a dismissive gaze.
“Maybe you’re just not as ‘revolutionary’ as you think you are,” Tornado sneered. “Especially since electric engines took over from you lot.”
Without another word, the large Steam Engine drew away, but not before wheeshing steam at him and completely covering him in a cloud that sent him spluttering and coughing.
“And my tender is NOT FAT!” Tornado fumed as she stormed away in a cloud of her own steam.
Diesel just kept his sneering face up the entire time he was in her eyeline before dropping it the second she had rounded a corner.
~~~
“You’re moping,” Mavis observed Diesel as he shunted trucks around rougher than usual.
“I am not mopey Mavis!” Diesel disputed as he slammed some trucks into a nearby siding to which they yelled and moaned. The 08 Class was having none of it though.
“Want to tell me what’s on your mind?” Mavis ignored his outburst. He glared at her.
“There’s a brand new Steam Engine,” he spilled and Mavis stared at him confused. He sighed before yelling at her. “They built a new steam engine!”
Mavis’s face lit up at the mention of the new steam engine.
“Ah yes that Tornado,” she acknowledged. “Sweet thing. Quite shy.”
Diesel snorted.
“‘Sweet thing’,” he mocked. “Had no trouble insulting me.”
“You were probably rude to her, as you are to everyone else,” Mavis pointed out.
“I’m not rude!” Diesel protested and Mavis just gave him a long hard stare before she trundled off to arrange her trucks, humming to herself softly.
Diesel frowned and backed himself up to keep up with her.
“What do you think?” He asked her and Mavis paused to look at him.
“What do you mean?”
“About this new… steam engine,” Diesel challenged and Mavis gave him a quizzical look.
“You feel threatened by her, don’t you?” She realised and a scowl appeared on Diesel’s face.
“I most certainly do not!” Diesel lied mostly to himself than to Mavis. The corners of Mavis’s mouth turned slightly upwards.
“You don’t believe that,” she disputed.
Diesel just sneered at her but Mavis was unperturbed.
“You don’t,” she insisted and Diesel humphed and pouted. “It’s okay to admit you’re wrong Diesel.”
“We were built to replace Steam Engines!” Diesel suddenly snorted at Mavis. “Why are they building new ones?! What is the point when they’re outdated!?”
“Humans think they’re romantic I believe,” Mavis pondered. “Or at the very least, there’s more of an emotion feeling they have towards steam engines.”
Diesel’s face soured and he looked away from her.
“Oh don’t feel bad Diesel,” Mavis smiled encouragingly at him. “Bear says that the mainland is full of people who feel the same way about us diesels.”
“And yet my class is always used as the shunters or the background work at such things,” Diesel bitterly admitted.
Mavis looked upon Diesel with sympathy knowing that it must have been hard for him to even admit that.
“Well, you might have a few fans of your own, you never know,” Mavis ventured and Diesel doubted that.
“Ha, unlikely,” Diesel grumbled before he gave a puff of oil black smoke and left Mavis to arrange her trucks.
“Maybe apologise to Tornado, she could be a friend like Sonny,” she called after him but Diesel just scoffed in response.
Mavis gave a tutt and went on her way, wondering why Diesel always insisted on being stubborn.
~~~
A few weeks later, Diesel encountered the young steam engine once again. She started scowling as soon as he came into her field of view.
“Oh, it’s you,” Tornado muttered and Diesel did feel the impulse to insult her but for once he managed to control himself.
He held his tongue as her trundled past her, making his way to the yards where he had been posted to work.
“S’rroy,” he mumbled incoherently as he passed her and Tornado stared at him confused.
“Excuse me?” She asked puzzled.
“I said sorry!” Diesel suddenly shouted at her as he oiled away, daring not to look at the engine. “Stupid steamie.”
If he had looked at her face, he would have seen Tornado smirking to herself, not maliciously but in good humour.
“Smelly diesel,” Tornado playfully muttered back and Diesel himself smirked.
