Clanmew terms to describe weight and height? Like the heavy in Heavystep or the tall in Tallstar?

I'm going to give you a detailed breakdown of words for describing attributes, including pulling from the Lexicon, to try and have a good single-post guide for this.

Note: In an attempt to add some better grammatical rules for attributes going foward, for a larger quest to make Clanmew better for some "conversational" topics, some words are going to get edited in the Lexicon as well

Basic Attributes

MOST attributes in Clanmew are inherently "neutral" until modified. "Way" is simply Height, with "Wayeeb," "Wayrra," and "Waymor" meaning Short, Medium, and Tall.

Generic attributes CAN be used in names, and by default refer to the 'obvious' nature of a characteristic.

For example; Shortwhisker of SkyClan was Kas-hussk, Length-Whisker. Because his short whiskers were defining, Kas in this situation obviously means "short." If his whiskers suddenly grew in twice as long, Kas-hussk would suddenly mean "Longwhisker," as that would also be the obvious trait.

(For Talltail I'm kind of thinking of making his Clanmew name Swashmew, Tailkit, and then eventually earning a name on his return that means "Story-Traveled" in reference to how long he spent away from WindClan. "Talltale" in English, which could have been "Wanderstar" or even "Talestar")

Height; the vertical axis of an object = Way

Length; the horizontal axis of an object = Kas

Weight; the heaviness of an object = Bai

Age; amount of time a thing has existed = Kiq

Wealth; the amount of stuff that a thing has = Poh (Note: NOT money-related. Refers to how much prey you've caught in an outing, how rich a patch of territory is, how full your bowl is, etc. I cannot think of a better English translation.)

Threat Level; a Clan Culture value = Myyrn

Experience/Skill/Aptitude; how good you are at a thing = Pya

Favor; for mortals, liking things = Min (Do you want to say "I love you?" Go read this for examples.)

Gloss; the shininess of fur, has a double meaning as StarClan's favor in you = Shaw

Soft; 'Squishiness,' comfort, pliability = Afi (NOT a fur texture. Soft of texture is "wuff")

Hard = Bobur

Happy; contentedness, joy, satisfaction = Bia

Rank; political power, authority, social standing = Gorrl

Temperature; the normal, non-freezing and non-burning range of heat. For fevers, average weather, objects you touch casually = Waa

Suffixes; attached to the end of attributes to modify them

Little of a physical attribute = -eeb

Medium of a physical attribute = -rra

Large of a physical attribute = -mor

Has not collected much of the attribute; scarce, poor = -qef

Has collected a reasonable amount of the attribute; expected, normal, "hitting your numbers" = -qal

Has collected a whole lot of the attribute; rich, -ful = -qew

"-ness," the most basic suffix for turning any word into an noun to be used in questions and declarations = -wang.

There's a significant difference between eeb/rra/mor (ERM) and qef/qal/qew (QQQ), listen carefully.

The ERM set is about physical, innate attributes. Long legs, natural talent, harmless species. A cat who contains Waymor is a NATURALLY tall cat, it is their build. To say that a cat contains "pyaeeb" is like saying that they are always going to be bad at a thing, where you could comfort a clanmate with "pyaqef" to say that they don't have experience yet.

The QQQ set is about acquired traits. A cat who contains Baiqew may be one who might be carrying a lot of weight but could set the objects down. You might hear "Pohqal" for a cat who has caught as much prey as they need to on this particular outing. "Wayqew" is height that a cat has because they are standing on something.

(and wayqal implies that squilf has stepped up onto some sort of box or rock to be eye-level with the person she is talking to <3)

It's a small difference, but a meaningful one.

Hi hi hi! @troutfur from main here and I'm very !!! about Claymew. I've got a couple questions I wanted to ask:

Does your conlang differ much grammatically from base Clanmew or is it meant to be much the same just with lexical changes?

Are you expanding on other grammatical words like you did with pronouns? I for one would be really excited to see what alternative opening particles and forms of evidentiality others may come up with!

Are family and social structures in ClayClan going to differ much to how they are portrayed in canon/Better Bones? If so do you have vocab to reflect that?

What sorts of words related to the arts does ClayClan have? Theater in particular I find very intriguing.

Does Claymew differ much grammatically from base Clanmew?

At the moment, no, as I've been focused on filling out the lexicon - I just finished the tree expansion but I've still got 50+ plants to name before I consider it really complete (and even then I'm sure I'll keep finding stuff to add).

I also don't know a whole lot about grammar haha, that's the one part of language I struggle with... but! I do hope to learn more about unique grammar structures and possibly implement some, I think it'd be a lot of fun.

2. Are you expanding on other grammatical words like you did with pronouns?

Pretty much the same answer as above, in that I'd like to dig into this once I know more about it!

I think evidentiality in particular is very interesting, so that's probably the avenue I'd explore first. An aspect of base Clanmew I really like is the particles that differentiate methods of attaining information (sight, hearing, etc), so I'd like to pry into that and see if there's anything I can play with... ClayClan is so communal that I could see them having multiple particles for "I heard this from someone else", differentiating information from family members, Clanmates, outsiders, etc. I'll have to look into it!

3. Are family and social structures in ClayClan going to differ much in comparison to canon/Better Bones? Is there vocab to reflect this?

I really enjoy base Clanmew's perception of families, especially the mi/ba* system, so as of right now I'm running with that! The story of Heart Rot involves a lot of family drama, though, so I might mess with it to enhance that.

Actually now that I think about, I really ought to have a special word for a ClayClan cat who left honorably... For a second I also thought "oh and a word for QPRs" but then I remembered iwaw*, haha.

The family structures explored most directly in Heart Rot are the relationships between sisters, father-daughter bonds, and abusive partnerships, so if I do add new vocab it'll most likely be related to those.

OH AND MUD-KITTENS! Holy cow I forgot about those!!! A kitten found abandoned on the territory is a mud-kitten, a gift from Silverpelt to the Clan. They're always adopted in and raised unless their parent comes to claim them. The new word for a mud-kitten is glefmew, "raw clay kitten", a kit that's fresh from the world and ready for metaphorical molding.

4. What sort of words does Claymew have for the arts?

Plenty! I'm planning a full post about artsy words, so I'll just put the theater terms here for now. I make a lot of words with inspiration from base Clanmew, so those original words will be marked with an asterisk, as always.

Stage play - Paopapp (pao*, papp*) Musical - Paopayana (paopapp, yanana*) Rehearsed - Umnabana, umnaba, umnab (umnem*, ababab*) Stage - Sheshee Actor - Rrubab Cat who prepares the stage - Washrubab (washa*, rrubab; a "shadow-actor"!)

Yes ClayClan has musicals, yes they have musical kids, yes this is a hilarious concept to me as well. I was a major theater kid and still enjoy working backstage, so I looove exploring ClayClan theater! It's a concept I haven't seen explored much in WC fanwork, I'm glad you like it.

apparently english /l/ gets realized in clanmew as ⟨w⟩ when intervocalic (cf. "olive" ⟨oweef⟩, "jellicle" ⟨shewakl⟩), which means clanmew ⟨l⟩ might be something other than the lateral approximant [l] i have on my chart; ⟨shewakl⟩ also implies ⟨l⟩ can act as a syllabic consonant, at the very least when word-final

prefixes and suffixes:

prefix "pinnacle" - possible senses: mountain peak; highest point; best

suffix "hollow" (none of the existing translations are quite what i'm after) - in the senses: tree hollow (for a standard name), empty/emptiness (for a dishonor title)

prefix "haven" - possible senses: safety, safe place

prefix "gill" - in the sense of the fish body part

(^ right now i've been approximating this as ⟨qiliao⟩ "chaffinch", both for auditory similarity and for the species name (Fringilla coelebs), but obviously this isn't even close to a perfect solution unless you assume whoever translated the name was sleep deprived that day)

prefix "hemlock" - in the sense of the poisonous plant; part of a dishonor title "hemlockwhisper", for a cat who turned her leader and her deputy against each other

prefix "scale" - in the sense of the fish/lizard body part

prefix "gorge" - in the sense of a canyon, like the one skyclan was living in

words for "nothing", "nobody"; maybe even a word for "zero", if "nothing" wouldn't already cover that for most purposes

comparative and superlative forms of adjectives. there's already a word ⟨omporr⟩ for "more", but i don't see a word for "most"

does ⟨weehoo⟩ "jingle" refer to the sound of jingleshells, or to a jingle as in a catchy tune? tumblr search is being unhelpful

Clanmew Expansion Pack: Deer & Co

A guide both to the Clan Culture concept of "deer" as a classification, how several species are perceived by Clan cats, as well as a glossary of Clanmew terms for their behavior.

There are six species of "deer" (Kleka) that Clan cats see on a regular basis, five of them titanic giants that are too large to hunt as adults, and one of them just small enough to be targeted. A kleka is defined as, "a fast herbivore with long legs, ending in hard hooves."

All types of deer are big animals, with even the smallest being larger than a cat. They're most often seen in forest or open meadows, so because of this, they're typically associated with ThunderClan and WindClan.

The six species that Clan cats consider a "deer," listed with their human terms and Clanmew translation;

Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) = Aug (default) & Aayoo (stags during rut in late summer to early winter)

Fallow Deer (Dama dama) = Niaa (default) & Gruag (stags with full antlers)

Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) = Aeur

Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) = Maa'ar

Horse (Equus ferus caballus) = Ee'ee

Sheep (Ovis aries) = Baa (default) & Bing (bell wether)

"Hey hold on a minute!" You cry, "Those last two aren't deer!"

Go ahead! Try explaining that to a cat who doesn't even know what cladistics are! It eats plants, it has swiveling ears, it has long legs and hooves, and it runs fast. What else could such a creature be? KLEKA IS KLEKA.

(Note: The Chinese Water Deer and Sika Deer are also seen in England; however, not as far north as BB's modeled regions, ergo they are not represented by Base Clanmew.)

But for the sake of organization, this guide will only cover the 'true deer,' reds, fallows, roes, and muntjacs.

Before getting into specific detail about each species, first, here's a couple more general terms for various parts of these animals.

Antler = Grek Branched, pronged horns that grow on male deer, bursting from bloody velvet. Muntjacs don't grow new antlers, but they never lose their 'velvet' either. Shed ones are valued for construction projects. A doe is an antlerless (grekwaro) deer; a buck is an antlerful (grekwang) deer.

Velvet = Gawrek (Meat + Antler) The meat that sheds off a fresh antler. Has been brought to my attention that this is full of estradiol, so, this is a very useful herb for Clan cats to use for feminine hormone treatment! For the velvet texture, "qefyyn", see here.

Horn = Greksh (Antler + Shell) Seen exclusively in sheep, named for the snail shell-like shape and fact that, after death, the horns are hollow. A cow also has greksh, but this currently goes undiscovered. NOTE: A generic horn, like the spines on a hedgehog or spikes on some insects, are called "kik"

Hoof = Kopka The hard stone-claws on the end of a Klek's leg; also seen on two other special non-klek animals; hogs and cows.

Beacon = Peeg When social deer are alarmed and running away, they follow the white flashes of each other's butts. Rabbits also have a beacon in their puffy tails! Clan cats assume that a horse's strange, hairy tail is just some sort of special beacon. It can also mean "rump," as in "rump roast."

Fawn = Myaa A baby deer that hides in grass, and does not run when approached.

Yearling = Mween A baby deer that follows its mother's side, and is now able to run if chased. The offspring of sheep and horses are already Mween just few minutes after their birth, though Clan cats don't encounter them on a frequent enough basis to have unique words for them. If used in a name, feel free to translate as 'foal' or 'lamb' at your discretion.

Herd = Klokok A large group of deer, usually only seen during rut, or in the case of horses, behind fences. Mostly used in the presence of an aggressive stag of some sort who will attack a Clan cat who bothers his does.

We start off with the largest wild animal on this list, and the biggest creature that Clan cats see on a regular basis; the Red Deer.

The rut season is from late summer to early winter, and is the only time in the year that stags have 'antlers' which they use to fight other males for control of a herd. This is reflected in Clanmew; most of the year, all red deer are Aug, the sound of the 'bark' they use to communicate with each other.

ONLY when antlers start coming in do the stags become identified by the other term; Aayoo. Aayoo fill the forest with loud bellowing and clashing as they face off, with some Clan cats even taking the opportunity to watch these titans brawl just for entertainment.

Some Aayoo even have a distinct "Raofa" (lion mane) or "Gaofa" (cravat, tiger mane), which associates them with the legends of the Great Clans. But, eventually, the Aayoo sheds its weapons, and returns to being an Aug before the frost sets in.

They are far too large to be hunted, and most Clan cats would find it dishonorable to take their fawns if they are found hidden. They are a breathtaking and honored animal... though they do look delicious, if you ask Squirrelflight.

Up next is the deer considered the most beautiful by Clan cat standards; the Fallow Deer.

Just like reds, fallows have a "default" word for those that aren't sporting any antlers; "Niaa." The call of a fallow buck is best described in English as a 'belch,' in Clanmew, they call it "Gruag."

Their behavior is quite different from red deer; instead of one male who fights off any challengers for control of a harem, they have what we call a "lek" system. Gruag will gather in one part of the territory to fight and show off against many rivals, and the Niaa come to this place to watch and pick who they like best.

side note: this is a really rare system to see in mammals and fallow deer have been studied for how unique this behavior is

They come in lots of different colors, from white, to tawny, sometimes even being such a dark brown that they appear black. These colors are beloved, noted as if StarClan themselves like to practice painting on their coats. On top of this, they're the most numerous species of deer to see.

All of these things together gives fallow deer a reputation for being "dramatic" and "fancy" by Clan culture standards, less honorable than the powerful red deer but just as noble. However, this means that their fawns are not treated with the same careful reverence as those of reds, and snatched whenever they're found hiding.

Roe deer act VERY differently from their larger cousins. A mostly solitary animal with only the presence of antlers and a smaller beacon marking a buck from a doe, Clanmew has only a single word for them; "Aeur." The sound of their very offputting 'alarm bark'.

Opportunists, roe deer will live just about anywhere they can find a small amount of forested cover, meaning they'll happily find room in just about any territory except WindClan's. In the Lake Territory, they're particularly fond of the places where fallows and reds don't have enough space, such as the SkyClan conifer patch.

Clan cats find them deeply unsettling. Though smaller than reds and fallows, a roe deer is still as large as three warriors stacked on top of each other. Males immediately re-grow their dagger-like horns as soon as the old ones fall out, never fully returning to the 'default' form. And, worst of all...

They have the same crepuscular behavior as cats do, active at dawn and dusk. Females typically raise two fawns and manage their own territories, much like a rogue. They even create simple nests which they sleep in every night.

The Clans try to keep away from them, unless they're truly starving. There are tales that those who don't believe in StarClan are doomed to exist as roe deer in their afterlives.

Probably not an animal you were expecting to see in England, huh? The Reeves' Muntjac has been an invasive problem since the 20th century, rapidly spreading across the island. Like roe deer, males have antlers while females do not, but there aren't enough differences in behavior for Clan cats to have a dedicated word for the two forms.

So, a muntjac is simply known as a "Maa'ar."

These little buggers will eat just about any plant matter, which can make them quite destructive. Bark, grass, fruits, leaves, anything. Slightly larger than a fox, their only predator is Clan cats, who consider them to be a prized quarry. Their skin creates some of the highest quality leather in all the territories, and their horns and 'tusks' are valued for decorations.

Though solitary, they can still put up a fight. Those fangs and horns aren't just for show; they can gore and kill an unwise hunter, and if that fails, they're much faster than their cutesy little loaf-shape suggests.

They're unique for many reasons, but especially in that they like wet areas. So, unlike the other types of deer, the muntjac is most often seen by ShadowClan and RiverClan. Since RiverClan doesn't have the same taste for mammalian meat that ShadowClan does, in the Lake territory, sometimes muntjac hunting rights cause conflict between the two neighbors.

Oh these will be mega helpful. Here's a super generic terms for various things;

Animal = Arrga Anything living thing that is not a cat or a human, including cars, because Clan cats don't know those are not alive.

People = Arranya CATS. NOT humans. Warrior cats "everypony."

Thing/single object = Wupee Things that aren't alive, but usually not food, as that's covered by "woo." Tools, leaves, rocks, whatever.

Stuff/several assorted objects = Arrwee Refers to groups of several different things, not usually lots of the same thing.

Whatsit/Thingamajig/Doohickey = Yawagawa A thing that is bizarre and being met with general confusion, usually complicated and hard to understand.

shit it's clanmew day already?? after last clanmew day i translated a buncha my OCs names, here are the ones i'm proud of (and one that makes me want to rip my hair out). also these are for fan clans who i decided give honor titles very liberally so like no one has the prefix they were born with LOL. also also all the translations are based on the notes i jotted down while translating and that was nearly a month ago so if some are bad.. y'know how it is.

hawkstar - yi'ishai or eeaoshai. "hawk" originally came from his honor title that he got for viciousness and cunning in battle, so within his clan he's called yi'ishai or sparrowhawk-star, but outside the clan he's known for his bloody battle tactic of attacking nurseries - thus red kite-star, since red kites are known for stealing kits.

mothwatcher - ffipkeslaou. i know there's a clanmew name for watch(er) but i went with divination cause it sounded cooler. her name was given because she deciphered an omen involving moths (haven't fleshed out what the omen was bc i suck at my job). also used the word for plume moth specifically because she's kind of weird lookin.

aspenfall - kossakanoch. least direct translation as "tree-broken in half" since her name was given when she retired due to an injury from a falling tree.

tawnyberry - pyowaworrpraw. used the word for poisonous berries for her, she changed which word for berry was used in her name as a symbol of her grief and desire for revenge after her apprentice was killed.

brokenfall - fewlkiseplur. "fall-interrupted" since her name was given after she caught a kit who had fallen off the top of the nursery.

snailstripe - hehhefshofi. "slithering-trail" since he was named for the trail of slime snails leave behind. just thought this one was cute tbh.

beaverstream - kenkagargerreboshush. when i tell you this name made me lose my mind know that i am telling the truth. i could not find the clanmew name for beaver so i went with "built barrier-stream" since her name was an honor title for her building skills.

FANTASTIC names! Excellent use of poetic meanings, I love Mothwatcher specifically, "Watcher" brings out the best in people doing translations for some reason!

Here's some snails 'n beavers for you!

SNAILS

Snails and slugs are considered a type of worm (Pusa), divided further into several more generic categories. I'll give you ALL the generics, and a few specific species of snail.

ALSO: Be prepared, ShadowClan has more vocabulary around snails than other Clans, because they are the only Clan that eats them regularly. I'll be making sure to note when and how their dialect differs.

Slug (Mostly gastropods... and mussels) = Ssloo Slimeworms are any worm that's ESPECIALLY slimy. They are defined by being the wettest worms. Leeches have an interesting relationship to the Slimeworm category-- ShadowClan considers them their own category under Pusa, probably because of their deep relationship with them, and define the different species. The other four lump them in with slugs, and call all three species ssufrru.

Snail (A slug with a shell) = Kewiha (Comes from cave, "Ken", baby-they "Wi", and bringing, "Hageesh." Ken-WiHageesh, "The little thing brings a cave," contracted.)

Arion (Snails that live in water) = Alof Marine snails and mussels. This word is usually referring to marine snails, but could mean any shell-producing animal regularly collected by RiverClan. Also used by other Clans to describe RiverClan's shell goods. Jingleshells (an instrument), shell necklaces, and also occasionally windchimes that contain no shells at all. The etymology of this term initially came from freshwater mussels alone and had origin in Parkmew, but after mussels died out in the River Chell, it came to describe anything in the water with shells.

And now, specific species of Snails, in both Kewiha broadly and Alof... and GET READY FOR SHADOWCLAN TO MAKE THINGS DIFFICULT

(NON-ShadowClan) A white-lipped OR a brown-lipped snail = Porsh Other Clans do not care about the difference between these two snails, owing to their natural diversity of shells. Both species are used in a type of divination, called Shai-een-Sek... EXCEPT in ShadowClan, where both species have unique names and uses.

(ShadowClan) Delicious Snail (White-Lipped, Cepaea hortensis) = Gapor THIS snail is eaten as a delicacy, and in LARGE amounts. Processing these snails makes for delicious treats in ShadowClan, especially for kittens who have fun figuring out how to get the meat out of the shell. Because they are eaten, their shells are a byproduct, and considered sacrilegious to use in divination.

(ShadowClan) Herald Snail (Brown-Lipped, Cepaea nemoralis) = Poen But you can't just use any Brown-Lipped snail in ShadowClan. StarClan only deserves the best snails, you must present them with something worth their time. They come in many colors and morphs, but a proper Holy Snail has a distinct white swirl on its brown shell, with a brown lip around the rim. You may not use the OTHER morphs.

(ShadowClan) Cosmic Dust Snail (Also Brown-Lipped, Cepaea nemoralis) = Porsh OR Keshof. Using the word "Porsh" in ShadowClan is referring to a Herald Snail with an off-color shell, also sometimes called Kewiha Sh'hoffes, or Keshof. ShadowClan believes that these snails are the byproduct of StarClan working upon the world, bearing the "cosmic dust" of their work upon their backs. It can be a bit derogatory in ShadowClan, like calling someone an accident, and they insist that the other four can't tell Porsh from Poen.

Garden Snail (Cornu aspersum) = Mokew The most common gastropod that Clan cats encounter. Also eaten by ShadowClan, but not considered quite as delicious as a gapor. Shells are occasionally used in decoration when the patterns are particularly bright or contrasting.

Kentish Snail (Monacha cantiana) = Meyloo The waste-snail. Mostly used by ShadowClan out of disappointment they taste bad, but will be eaten when starving, other Clans just lump them under Kewiha.

Pond Snail/Whelk (Lymnaea stagnalis) = Wook The marine snail that RiverClan is most familiar with. Though it's not actually a type of Whelk, I encourage using it as a translation just so it looks good in a name, and has a similar spiral-shaped shell.

Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritafera Margaritafera) = Kofoo From Arion + Lake. An extremely rare creature back in the Forest Territory, mostly spoken about in legends. The water quality was just too poor for these animals to thrive there, and they died out in the River Chell around the same time as SkyClan's exile. Once the Clan cats came to the lake, they were able to see these creatures for the first time in generations. The word Alof (which originally meant mussels) was combined with the word for lake, creating Kofoo.

Here is a bonus; some group-words for the various categories!

Patch of mussels = K'kbw OR Kikibwa Important because RiverClan makes notes of these locations and makes sure they don't take too many. This word is made to be said underwater, between cats who are diving. It's two clicks and a bubble. Above water, spoken with air, it becomes Kikibwa.

Beautiful shell = Sek Contrast with Eksh (hard shell, of mussel, describes curled horns of rams) and Babaak (exoskeleton, shining shell of insects.) Sek are the shells of most snails, decorative things that can be strung on a necklace.

A type of divination using the shells of Porsh/Poen = Shai-een-Sek [Star-inside-Shell]

The Lake = Oorr Sangkoorr A word that means "Lake Lake Lake." When Daisy was asked the name of the Lake, she explained it was called "Sang Koorr," which is a corruption of the ENGLISH word for SANCtuary Lake, which became Sang in Seamew, combined with the OLD LAKEMEW word for lake, which was Koorr. Lake Lakelake.

BEAVERS

AND, LASTLY, before we close out, Clan cats DO have a word for beaver... and here is a little tidbit from BB;

European Beaver (Castor fiber) = Hyoog Also sometimes called the Ukum Kenkagarn in ShadowClan. The Construction Buddy. Dovewing had a great reputation in ShadowClan LONG before she joined it, it was her quick thinking and great hearing while on her quest with Tigerpaw and the Beaver Patrol that made her realize the strange creatures were defending kittens in their dam. Rather than just destroy a structure the beasts would surely rebuild later, the patrol clambered in and stole the kits, luring the family all the way back to the Lake. While Rippletail died in the process, his sacrifice wasn't in vain. ShadowClan is very fond of the creatures and their willingness to help with Blackstar's Bog Project, protecting them zealously.

Side note: This is actually what a beaver sounds like. In fact, I want you to imagine what you thought a beaver sounds like right now.

Hey Bonefall! Got a wide and weird variety of Clanmew things to share/ask about! Spent some time translating a mix of straight OCs and also clangen cats, and thus I’ve got some names to show off and also a varied list of words I ran into a lack of.

Cherryclaw - Obeorussyskat

Cherry leaves who will unsheathe claws

Also known as Sookie, this is the warrior name I’ve given to my cat. Name is coming from cherry, making it specifically the leaves of the cherry tree since she’s a beautiful tortie, and then yskat from the term for unsheathing claws, as I wanted a more active term than just referring to the body part. If I’m getting how nicknames work right, I think a suitable nickname would be Obekat, but you might notice a better one.

This also turned up a word I think would be helpful - what would be the term for specifically leaves which have fallen to the ground in leaffall? Like, piles of rustling leaves on the ground. I think that’d fall a lot closer to what I was getting at.

Cranestar - Bwabwashai

Egret star / Cranelight / Egret who shines

Previously known as Bwabwashemi, this one is using the egret as a reasonably similar bird which had a word in the lexicon.

Oakbranch - Byochchobyrr

Oak tree branch

This one was a big chunk of time and turned up a decent chunk of words desired, as Oakbranch is a cleric and fathers a litter of kittens with Cranestar and thus I decided to dabble in dishonour names with him, though it would be given by a different leader likely.

I ended up wanting the general meaning of “tree branch dead from breaking a vow”, so using Babechok in place of the prefix and using a term for a broken vow as the suffix - ideally a term for specifically the cleric vow, but a general promise would work too. Thus, under this I was wondering what the words for promise/vow, honourable, broken vow, forbidden, and dishonourable would be. (Don’t worry I’m gonna add a bullet list at the end)

Types of Wings

There are a LOT of words for specific types of wing in Clanmew, related to the fact Clanmew is a language of obligate carnivores and active hunters. There isn't just "Flying," there are a LOT of types of "flight" and each wing produces a very different kind of rapid movement.

Someday I will also expand on the types of Beof, feathered wings.

Bat wing, has a bit of a "tragic" connotation if not used in the context of a living bat, as dead "songbirds" are a very sad thing to Clan cats = Pafr

Hard, outside wing of some insects, such as beetles, "Shield" = Bakbur

Clear, iridescent flight wing of insects, "Elytra" = Kaskr

Beautiful, patterned wing of a butterfly or moth, "painted" by StarClan. Has a holy connotation = Wesk

Pectoral fin of a fish, NOT the tail-fin, the "arm" wing = Sseo

Values

Here's honor-related terms, in order of least insulting to most insulting.

Honor = Kurruar To say something is honorable (good thing), the suffix -wang is appended. Kurruarwang. Honorness. To negate, the prefix Nyar is applied. Nyarkurruarwang, Not-Honor-Ness. You can come back from dishonor, it's the politest way to phrase that someone has not been acting in line with the value of Honor.

Beastliness, gauchness, lacking in good taste = Ragywar This is usually applied to taste, meaning a cat who will eat raw meat or bite through their tunnelbuns, but it could also be used in a context meaning that the cat acts like an "animal." Driven by lesser instincts.

Cannibalism/Eats its own young/Acting in extreme self-interest = Mwyrgna This is the lowest kind of NATURAL evil... but still natural. It's the evil of cuckoo birds, frightened animals that eat their own young, killing out of self-interest. VERY serious insult.

Unnatural Evil/Cruelty/Sadism = Yaonyyw This is not something that cuckoo birds are even capable of. It's unnatural evil. It's pleasure at seeing another thing suffer, for no other reason than to see it in pain. It's what Clan cats think humans do when they cut the claws off their kittypets. It's unspeakable, but rare.

And on vows,

Promise = Minki NOT a holy vow. Just one you make between people. Also can be used to mean "reliable," "Capable of keeping promises."

Vow/Oath = Shemiyyo A sacred promise, one you make on authority of your holy name. VERY few things are vows of this level-- the most common vow to make is the one you do during your Warrior Name Ceremony, making an oath to uphold the code.

Fallenleaf's name is over here, step-by-step walking through its etymology even! Her name in Clanmew, Wowaruss is basically "Leaf Litter," but literally "Beneathleaf," the fallen layer of leaves in a forest.

CRESS

THREE types of Cress. As a treat. Any of these can translate to cress if you'd like, or the alternate translations I'm including.

Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) = Qwerru From Duck + Leaf, because this is a favorite fodder of ducks and geese. VERY unhealthy for cats, doesn't cause instant poisoning but WILL lead to kidney stones if eaten a lot. Thankfully, it also tastes Bad.

Stune (Cardamine hirsuta) = Berrsha Also called "Hairy Bittercress" in English, used as a medicinal herb. Widespread, very common, and seen in early Spring which can make it very useful for Clerics running low on other medicines. "Stune" comes from Old English btw. it's an archaic name for this plant but I do what i want. Language is an illusion and so are pants.

Rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) = Eberr Called "Bitter Wintercress" or "Yellow Rocket" in English, a much better version of stune. Pops up in abundant, cheerful flowers, hence the English name. NOT EATEN; used as a poultice for treating wounds.

Everything Else

Just a couple more things of assorted flavors;

Mark = Neb A scent marker, DOESN'T JUST APPLY TO SPRAYING but, yes, that is also a neb. A kitty "kiss" is also a mark being applied.

Anointed/Anointing/Will Anoint = Kembaneb/Kembane/Kemban To intentionally leave a mark, usually of a substance that smells nice, on a living thing. Has a spiritual connotation, used in some rituals. Can be used for a metaphorical kitty kiss, if your feelings are being returned, you're being brought into a family, etc. When Frostfur taught Cloudtail how to apply makeup to his dull, white pelt, teaching him how to look 'beautiful' as if she was officially accepting him as her son-in-law, THAT can also be considered an Anointing.

Border-Marked/Border-Marking/Will Border Mark = Ssognassa/Ssognass/Ssogna There's no way to get around this. This is spraying. It is urine. They are Cats. This is specifically when you are setting a scent mark, such as that for a border.

Glyph/Written Word/Character = Karm Like a letter! It's something written down. See the Glyphs.

And... rump. Honestly I'm always super confused by this one when I see it in Clangen? Like... My brain's always trying to place what that means.

Is it like, a tuft on the lower spine? Is it the "butt button" that makes a kitty stretch their booty up when you scratch it? Is it the flank of the upper leg? Does it just mean butt cheek?? Who wants to be named BUTTCHEEK?

SO HERE. HERE'S EVERY ONE OF THOSE THINGS, YOU PICK

Spine (the entire back) = Chabak

Rump-tuft, could also apply to "pantaloon" tufts as seen on some longhaired breeds = Chaofa

Rump/Butt Zone/sensitive spot on the lower back of a cat = Chawka (Also used to describe something they have a "soft spot" or passion for)

Belly Zone/Spot that cats don't like having touched on their belly = Bowka (Also used to describe "weak point")

Upper leg/Haunch = Pwaio Sometimes translated as the "foot" suffix. When used in a name, means quick to spring or a good runner, usually outside of WindClan.

Buttcheek = Soopen Also the present-tense of "Sitting." The butt, the thing you use to sit down with.

Centipedes! Segmented bugs with lots of legs that live in the leaf litter. Clan cats do not have a knowledge of cladistics, so there are three animals that get put into this broad category and one of these things is not like the others;

Generic Term (Segmented 'bug' that keeps its belly low to the ground) = Ugoogi

Centipede = Gishi

Milipede = Perra

Rollypolly/Woodlouse/pillbug = Booi

Curl Up (The action of rolling up into a ball) = Arreoopa/Arreoop/Arreoo

Slither (the action of moving so close to the ground that your belly drags) = Hehhefe/Hehhef/Hehhe

If you're a Critter Fan, you'll know right away that Rollypollies are actually a type of land crustacean! If you tried to explain this to a Clan cat, they would imagine river shrimp and crayfish, and call you a fucking liar.

ShadowClan and ThunderClan encounter these things a lot, and have a few unique words for the favorite species in each category.

So the short and most generic answer for your Centipedeslither cat would be Gishihehhef, "Centipede-slithering," but the longer answer with specific species to choose from...

CENTIPEDES (Gishi)

A Gishishi is different from a Perra, to Clan cats, because a Gishishi has legs further splayed out. They also tend to be better hunters, ergo, they are more respected.

ShadowClan likes to eat them.

Western Yellow Centipede (Haplophilus subterraneus) = Rreeshi

This is the gentlest type of centipede there's a unique word for, the rest are pretty active hunters and a Clan cat could probably be convinced that it's a Perra. This thing is BRIGHT golden and hard to ignore, making it an animal that Clan cats think is quite beautiful.

Stone Centipedes (Lithobiomorpha) = Gnoshi

These ones are seen under just about any type of rotting wood or leaf litter, and are large and juicy enough that ShadowClan will bother to collect them for a soup.

They have a formidable power; a venomous bite that can make a warrior's paw sting for a while. They can't cause lasting damage, but a careless apprentice would get a painful warning.

And the last one is an interesting type.

House Centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata) = Mwrshi

These animals are exclusively a bad omen.

This species of centipede is VERY rare this far north in the UK. They require a large population of lesser insects to feast on, such as silverfish. They don't like the climate, and so, they occasionally are found in dens.

Their bite can be very painful, but most of all, they are a sign of uncleanliness and disorder below the surface. Messengers of underlying problems, with whiskers for legs, as if commanding Clan cats to keep their senses sharp.

MILIPEDES (Perra)

Milipedes are different from centipedes to Clan cats for having more legs, tucked neatly under their bodies, and often being able to roll up into a little coil! They are seen as cute, less threatening than centipedes, meek and cowardly.

They also don't taste as good, much like a long rollypolly. ShadowClan will still eat them though, with seasonings.

TRIVIA: Milipedes of the genus Polydesmus follow the body plan that Clan cats associate with "centipedes"! Legs splayed to the side. So they classify those as centipedes, not milipedes.

Blunt-tailed Snake Millipede (Cylindroiulus punctatus) = Oskerra

Shockingly long-lived for an insect, taking 3 years before it reaches maturity. There is a Clanmew saying about this, "I would rather live a moon as a stone centipede than many seasons as an Oskerra."

Striped Milipede (Ommatoiulus sabulosus) = Uberra

The most commonly seen milipede in ShadowClan, with the ability to break down pine needles and tolerating wet conditions. Seen as a harder worker than the other two, but still as gentle and cowardly as its cousins.

White-legged Snake Milipede (Ommatoiulus sabulosus) = Lubrerra

Usually seen exclusively in ThunderClan, as they don't like extremely wet conditions. A shame, as ShadowClan in particular thinks they're very pretty and envy that they don't live by them.

When ShadowClan does manage to take land from ThunderClan, they will often make a soup out of this type of millipede to be smug about it. ThunderClan doesn't even LIKE eating bugs but BOY does it offend them!

ROLLYPOLLIES (Booi)

Now the first thing you're gonna get to know about these little things is that there is an impostor in their midst. This is the biggest class in this category of animals, with a whopping total of 6 animals, and one of them is secretly a milipede!

Again, though, if you told this to a Clan cat they would think you are a dirty liar.

All of these are sometimes tossed into meals to add a crunchy texture. MOST of them cannot curl!

Common Pill Millipede (Glomeris marginata) = Sipooi

Seen as a sign of good luck when sighted near other Booi, as they are one of the hardiest of their category and are capable of surviving in conditions the others can't. They even sometimes stroll in bright sunlight!

They very rarely display ginger flecks on their black segments like a tortoiseshell cat. When this is the case, it's a wonderful omen.

Common Shiny Woodlouse (Oniscus asellus) = Shemooi

Totally incapable of curling up, and the only woodlouse that WindClan is familiar with. It happily hangs out on the lone bits of rotting wood out in the moorland, like fenceposts, trees, dead heather bushes, and so on.

Shining is associated with StarClan in all contexts and the little yellow flecks are seen as star-like, so WindClan confidently believes that StarClan only allow the holiest of Booi into their territory. Unlike the other Clans whose booi are rough and shineless.

Gucci Booi

Common Rough Woodlouse (Porcellio scaber) = Karkooi

ShadowClan's favorites, for their love of wet environments and total inability to curl. They come in a WIDE array of colors, from blue-gray to russet-red to pale orange.

These make excellent first-time pets for a young kit, before they're ready for the responsibility of mealworms. Keeping karkooi is enjoyable for collecting pretty colors, and rotting wood is even easier to find than collecting scraps of fruit and crowfood.

They even display individual personalities, like being shy, brave, or outgoing, and are completely unable to bite. Kittens can become VERY attached to their pets!

Common Striped Woodlouse (Philoscia muscorum) = Gishooi

By far the fastest of this group, with a gorgeous dappled pattern. Seen as a hybrid between Rollypollies and Centipedes, but due to the very different nature of its parents, it has the strengths of neither.

Common Pill Woodlouse (Armadillidium vulgare) = Buabooi

The one you've all been waiting for.

The most iconic of this family, the one that immediately comes to our minds when we think of rollypollies. Round, majestic, found in dark soil and under nearly every rock in a forest.

Uncontested as a detritivore and integral to the breakdown of leaf litter in a forest, Clan cats see these poor little guys as helpless cowards who roll up instead of running away. Still, kits love to bother them and see them curl up into tight little nuts, poking them around with their claws.

Oooo now you’re really getting me into Clanmew. What are the names for birds and bird species in Clanmew?

The simple word for "Bird" evolved from Old Tribemew, at the Dawn of the Clans. A "Bird" is any two-winged flying animal with bones.

Bird (and bats) = Hafefyl

The major types of birds that the Clan cats recognize are as follows;

Raptor = Yassga A large, dangerous bird. Any avian perceived to pose a threat is in this category, including swans, ravens, and herons. Not just birds of prey.

Fowl = Eyawoon Large prey birds, the same level of danger as any other large quarry. Ducks, pheasants, gulls, cormorants, a chicken or peacock would also be in this category.

Game = Biyaw These are the birds that are eaten regularly, without much other consideration. It's where most of the 'odd' birds that don't fit other categories go. Pigeons, sparrows, quails.

Fancy = Pyrrya Any bird that would be a shameful thing to kill. That usually means songbirds with pleasing songs, but also colorful ones with pleasing patterns and behaviors, and even bats as they bring sickness when eaten.

Examples of "Yassga";

Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) = Nyieu A species only encountered in the Tribe mountain, before re-contact it was considered a legendary animal. The most dangerous flying species, capable of attacking small deer.

Sparrow Hawk (Accipiter nisus) = Yi'i When hawks are being noted for their speed, it's this species. They primarily hunt other birds, but not cats.

Red Kite (Milvus milvus) = Eeao This is the species that is both large and bold enough to take kittens. The vast majority of the time when hawks are mentioned in a dangerous context, it is a kite. Goshawks are not as numerous in this area as canon implies.

Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) = Ipip Acrobatic, agile bird able to seemingly 'hover' in the air.

Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) = Yeepi Skilled attentive hunters that tend to hunt small mammals in open areas, especially wetlands. RiverClan and ShadowClan see these a lot.

Merlin (Falco columbarius) = Mweelili A small, generalist hunter that likes low-density areas like moorland, sparse woods, and brush. Known for being friendly with Harriers and eating just about anything.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) = Pyip Not actually a dangerous species; but the perception of danger will make Clan cats avoid this creature. Most commonly found by the sea.

Swan (Cygnus olor) = Hchom Large and quiet, these birds are so large they can drown a foolish warrior or break a bone.

Raven (Corvus corax) = Nyok A raven is considered a very dangerous bird not only for its size and ferocious beak, but because of how vengeful an unkindness can be. They remember Clan cats and seemingly mess with them on purpose.

Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) = Krekek With their habit of spearing, bludgeoning, and even brutally drowning their prey, herons are feared and avoided. There are stories of herons picking off wayward kittens, but it's unknown if it's true or just a tale to stop them from wandering.

Eagle owl (Bubo bubo) = Huo The biggest, largest, most dangerous owl. Cats are a desired prey. No other owl will attack an adult warrior, and eagle owls are most often found in ThunderClan territory where there's thick forest and a nearby rocky cliff.

Tawny owl (Strix aluco) = Hrrua'u A loud, sonorous owl. Known best for being the species roosting in the old Owl Tree.

Barn owl (Tyto alba) = Weear This owl does not hoot, it screeches.

Examples of "Eyawoon";

Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) = Kwek There are several species of ducks they encounter occasionally-- but this one, the mallard duck, is the most common. ThunderClan liked to try and hunt them when they had Sunningrocks, sometimes inflaming tensions between clans.

Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) = Rauqa Named for the territorial cry of a male pheasant, the most impressive prize that a ThunderClan warrior can catch.

Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) = Rewp Not just a seabird; found further in-land and will make do with just about any body of water. This is a species regularly found and hunted at Sanctuary Lake, and also the type that Gullswoop is named for.

Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) = Eeyar The Clan cats haven't been doing salt patrols long enough yet to know that this is absolutely not an Eyawoon, but in fact, a Yassga. Sandwhich-stealing BASTARDS. They're the ones with the gray back, yellow beak, little red mark on the lip, and feral Grinch-looking eyes. If you live by the ocean you know. (There is another species that looks similar but Clan cats think they are the same animal)

Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) = Waer A large, black fishing bird that dives underwater to catch its prey. Revered by RiverClan.

Carrion crow (Corvus corone) = Rawk This is the species being referred to when "crowfood" is mentioned. Rawkwoo.

Magpie (Pica pica) = Ke'ek Glossy, beautiful blue, black, and white bird. Very intelligent and a difficult catch; like crows and ravens they are smart enough to have a concept of social learning.

Egret (Egretta garzetta) = Bwawa Though they have many of the same 'brutal' behaviors as herons, they're too small to cause damage and hence are sorted into 'eyawoon'

There is currently no word for Chicken but Ravenpaw is probably using the term Barley likes best. Except the rooster which he immediately named "Urkaroona."

Examples of "Biyaw";

Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) = Huwoohoo Big, fat, common, a popular meal bird.

Dove (Columba livia) = Hrru Funfact: In TPB, there is a moment where Fireheart scolds Cloudpaw for calling a pigeon a 'dove.' In English, pigeons and doves are synonyms, but in Clanmew, Cloudtail had killed a Huwoohoo, but called it a Hrru.

Sparrow (Passer domesticus and Passer montanus) = Qee Though there's a difference in plumage between these species, Clan cats think they are the same species because their songs are nearly identical. Passer montanus (Eurasian Tree Sparrow) is just considered what a sparrow looks like when it lives deep in the woods.

Quail (Coturnix coturnix) = Wipiwik A round little ground bird that's very fast.

Jackdaw (Coloeus monedula) = Miaw A black-and gray bird with a mewling call.

Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) = Errari This bird has many songs, which is taken by Clan cats as intentionally trying to hide its true name. They may even be changing their appearances to look like a Mistle Thrush; clearly they're something much more intelligent, since they use stones to smash open snail shells.

Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) = Charrech Much larger than a Song Thrush. Brave, one of the few birds that sings even in terrible weather, but named for the angry sound it makes when it's guarding berry bushes in winter.

Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) = Apapach A very important winter prey bird which travels in large flocks. Bullied by Mistle Thrushes for good food sources.

Redwing (Turdus iliacus) = Eean Similar to a fieldfare, but smaller and usually in tinier groups. The call is very different, so these birds are not usually confused by Clan cats unless they're seen first. Apapach are the preferred prey of the two.

Blackbird (Turdus merula) = Oohee Males are blue-black with a yellow ring around the eye, and females are a ruddy dappled brown.

Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) = Arkr Loud, aggressive medium-sized birds. Pale with blue wings.

Examples of "Pyrrya"

Bat (4 SPECIES) = Fip This refers to the sound of their wings mid-flight. No species of bat is consumed. Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) = Popep A very small, common bat species that usually eats mosquitoes and midges in wet areas.

Soprano Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus) = Ipi'ip Humans can barely tell the difference between these two, but Clan cats recognize that the song of a Soprano is much faster, higher-pitched, and absolutely sonorous. Considered the night version of a wren and held in high esteem.

Long-eared Brown Bat (Plecotus auritus) = Fepfr A very quiet, low-flying bat with a habit for doing some ground-hunting. This is usually the first bat that an apprentice sees instead of hears, and the one which is used to teach them to not hunt bats. It has a very modest song, which Clan cats explain as mourning for every bat accidentally killed and discarded. Rarely called the "Fip Hhass;" the Whisper Bat.

Noctule (Nyctalus noctula) = Shi'po The largest bat, has huge teeth and a broad face. Females both migrate and hibernate, but males stay awake all year and sing with a very distinctive tune hard to put into a word.

Songbird (SEVERAL SPECIES) = Pigu Note: Most songbirds are down here in this category, but some, like Song Thrushes, are only here conditionally. Usually if there's enough food to go around.

Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) = Pi'ie The song of this tiny bird is so fast and beautiful that Clan cats have a hard time putting it into words; these birds are not killed except by fiends and rogues.

Robin (Erithacus rubecula) = Birri This is a small, gray-and-brown bird with a bright orange face. They're not very filling, pretty, and sing a delightful song, so like the other species in this category they aren't taken unless there's a serious need.

Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) = Mweep Though large and delicious, these birds are so enjoyed that killing them is dishonorable without approval. They're the only bird that can fly away with its young, it dances and puts on air shows as mating rituals, and they're quite rare.

I've tried to keep cat fur in mind, but then added some extra textures based on the things they encounter on a regular basis.

FUR

Soft: Wuff Self-explanatory, however, this word is only used for hair. Don't use this word to describe a cushion unless it's one of those ones covered in soft faux fur.

Coarse: Chych Rough, compact, somewhat like the mane of a horse or the fur of a deer.

Bristle: Bach Sparse, spiky, rougher than coarse.

Thick: Buwi Self-explanatory

Thin: Pawi Self-explanatory

Rough: Karkar Self-explanatory

Smooth: Ool Self-explanatory

Sleek: Hees Short and smooth, not thick, conforms to the body of the animal

Plush: Ssum Thick but less compact than 'wooly,' poofs out a bit. Often refers to moss.

Wooly: Owun Thick and compact, sheeplike in texture. Can refer to matting.

Velvet: Qefyyn The texture of short fur that's growing back in after being shaved or plucked.

Fuzzy: Kawu Short, soft, sticks up in angles.

Fluffy: Hefu Long and soft, the opposite of sleek, rises off the form of the animal.

Whispy: Aiu VERY light, airy, and silky. Advanced fluffy.

Oily: Siob Slightly slippery, very smooth, often appears glossy

Wet: Blop Self-explanatory

Damp: Wep Has a little wetness but not a lot.

Dry: Sheshe Self-explanatory

Scaly: Kurwan Feels like touching bumpy skin, like that of toads, snakes, most fish, and lizards... but not frogs.

Slimy: Ssmugwan Icky sticky :(

Feathery: Bufwan Feels like touching feathers, slightly quilly and poky but overall soft.

Furry: Fegwan Feels like touching fur. This can apply to grass, some molds, or actual fur.

Hard: Bobur Self-explanatory

Soft: Afi IMPORTANT: This word is 'soft' as in 'the opposite of hard,' not soft as in 'fur that is soft.' Touching this means that it is pliant and 'squishy.' Like a pillow vs a rock.

For the patrols, the word is taken and -Pabparra is tacked on. So Dawn Patrol is "Heforpabparra", but Clan cats have a habit of contracting long words, so its nickname is likely Hefpabpa once a warrior is trained enough to know what to expect.

Yes, Kessak is the type of thistle seen in Thistle Law and its namesake! Kessak is Cirsium Vulgare, the Bull Thistle. It has a nasty habit of forming monocultures, and is famously difficult to eradicate, which is what was being referenced in the Parable of the Thistle.

In this area, there's also the Marsh Thistle, Musk Thistle, Welted Thistle, and Creeping Thistle. Thistleheart is actually named for the Marsh Thistle (Kekrababun), Gorsetail named her child in a way as to remind her of Beechfur without raising too much suspicion.

Generic term for "Thistle", a pink, fluffy flower surrounded by wicked thorns: "Kegkep"

Bull Thistle (Cirsum Vulgare): Kessak A hardy, vicious, giant thistle that often overtakes entire fields. It sets up in disturbed soil, sets down sprawling, thorny leaves, and rises high into the sky.

But here's a few more weather-related terms! Because this is England I have faithfully translated 14 different words for various types of rain.

Types of Storms:

June 3rd is going to be our next Clanmew Day! I always make sure to announce when the next one will be at the end.

We track the lunar cycle of Guatemala City specifically, because @troutfur follows it for a few personal rituals! Any lunar tracker app could tell you when the next day will be. Normally I base everything off the modeled regions in the UK, but because Trout's so integral to this project we base it off his moon.

So the next couple of Clanmew Days in 2023 will be;
