About Wit’s Writing
Okay, got a few new followers who migrated from Twitter
Time to write up a proper pinned post for this place
Around late-2016 I started writing regular movie/tv/comic reviews over on my main Tumblr profile @wcwit but because I wanted people who came across those to be able to find more without digging through everything else on there, I established Wit’s Writing as an alternate profile in 2017.
Kept the regular reviews chugging for a while, but eventually between the exhaustion caused by living through the pandemic and my current job being full time, I’ve put a stop to those for the time being. (Not writing off the possibility of them ever coming back just yet.)
So now this blog is for long-form essays about media I like that aren’t necessarily traditional reviews and the occasional cross-post of something I wrote for my Letterboxd profile.
And now, a bunch of links to help y’all navigate this place:
For my old regular reviews:
Movie Reviews
TV Reviews
Comic Book Reviews
Misc. Writing
Recent Stuff I’m Proud of:
What’s so Funny About Vengeance, the Night, and Batman? – Two Superhero Parodies in Conversation - A thematic comparison between StarKid Productions’ Holy Musical B@man and Warner Bros Animation’s The Lego Batman Movie
The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals and the Roles We Play - A semi-followup to the previous piece about why TGWDLM is my favorite StarKid musical
My Favorite Panel in One Piece (or, “Why I’ll Happily Reread These 1054+ Chapters Any Time!”) - That time I caught up on One Piece and used a single word balloon as an excuse to gush about the series as a whole
Complete Episode by Episode TV Reviews:
Earth’s Mightiest Retrospective - A complete recap/review of all 52 episodes of the animated series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes done in the lead up to Avengers Endgame
Ultraman Z Reviews - A breakdown of all 25 episodes from the Seiun Award Winning 2020 tokusatsu series
Times my writing/voice was featured elsewhere:
School of Movies - My favorite movie podcast and one that has been nice enough to have me on as a guest on multiple occasions
Two Cents - Cinapse’s currently defunct movie-book-club where their columnist and guest could submit thoughts on various movies
And as of right now, that’s everything worth mentioning
Hope y’all enjoy it here!

To better understand where the sub-genre of J-horror has moved throughout the years, I have viewed a more recent film that fits into this category. The film that I viewed was Howling Village (2021), directed by Takashi Shimizu. This film follows a young psychologist, Aiko, who investigates the mysterious disappearance of her brother and his friends in a remote village with a reputation for being cursed. As they uncover more about the village they realize the dark history behind it, full of human sacrifices and the summoning of demons. They attempt to escape the village before it's too late after diving too deep into the history. The best way to see where this sub-genre has moved is to compare it to the film that brought J-horror into the spotlight, Ring (1998).
Tumblr media
The first similarity I noticed from both of these films was the creation of an environment that filled the viewer with dread. J-horror is more about giving the viewer an uneasy feeling, rather than scaring them with violence and gore. However, there was much more gore within Howling Village than Ring. This is just the movement of the film industry, where modern humans are almost too used to witnessing acts of violence and gore due to the internet. Both of these films have similarities and differences in their themes. Both of these have a supernatural force within them, but the difference is they stem from what is popular within the culture at the time. For example, Ring uses technology as the main focus point, at a time when technology and media were rapidly advancing in Japan. However, Howling Village focuses more on societal shifts, moving away from the past and forgetting about it. Their narrative structures were also different, with Ring following a linear structure, while Howling Village had multiple perspectives to create intertwining stories. The biggest difference between the two, which you can see through the trailer of Howling Village, as there are no clips to view online, is that Ring was known for its minimalistic approach to horror. The movie used things such as eerie lighting and the use of videotape to create a feeling of dread for the viewer. Howling Village on the other hand uses more modern visual techniques, incorporating CGI and more elaborate set designs.
youtube
Overall, I have come to the conclusion that Howling Village still fits under the themes of J-horror, even with its differences. The major differences are simply due to changing times, viewers find different things scary than they did almost 30 years ago. They also have larger budgets for movies within this sub-genre than they previously did, and with the advancements of technology, it wouldn't make sense for them to not use the newer special effects.

Matt Damon and Robert Duvall in an original publicity still for Geronimo (1993). Ed Travis wrote in Cinapse "As gorgeous as it is melancholy, Walter Hill’s Geronimo is an odd bird. At first I was quite troubled by how many of our lead (white) characters all come across as somewhat noble and sympathetic. It's Geronimo's rage against the inevitable which is the film's heartbeat and greatest strength."

FINALLY A POSITIVE REVIEW!!!!
At first glance, the new romantic thriller Siberia has the kind of pedigree a film producer just couldn’t buy. The script comes courtesy of Scott Smith, author/screenwriter of A Simple Plan, the acclaimed Sam Raimi thriller which topped every “best of” list back in 1998 thanks to it’s tight plot weaving and cat-and-mouse feel. If that weren’t enough, the director of Siberia is Matthew Ross, the filmmaker behind 2016’s Frank & Lola, a romantic noir which brilliantly explored the dark intensity of uncontrollable passion. Given said talent and their proven abilities, it’s more than understandable why most cinephiles would be looking forward to the release of Siberia. What’s not understandable is why the film isn’t as good as it should be.
Tumblr media
In Siberia, an American diamond expert named Lucas (Keanu Reeves) has traveled to Russia in order to facilitate the authentication and sale of some highly sought-after diamonds to a wealthy, but dangerous, businessman Boris (Pashda D. Lychnikoff). Eventually the search for his missing partner (and the diamonds) takes Lucas to a small town and to a beautiful cafe owner named Katya (Ana Ularu). Before he knows it, Lucas finds himself in a passionate affair as the search for his partner intensifies and his client seems hell bent on tracking him down.
Tumblr media
There are mixed feelings to be had when it comes to the romantic elements of Siberia. It isn’t so much that the two actors have a hard time finding some sort of chemistry, it’s just that there aren’t as many moments for them to explore it early on. Because of this, the affair that develops between Lucas and Katya in the first half of the film feels more like a convenience than anything else. The moment in which we see Katya fling herself into Lucas’s search for his missing partner feels half-hearted; as if Katya herself is having trouble finding a reason to be interested. Eventually though, Siberia does manage to have its characters form a solid romantic connection. There’s something about the way the couple see each other; as two people that life essentially forgot about who have been wounded by the loneliness and darkness of their worlds. The idea that someone cared enough to acknowledge the broken sides of Lucas and Katya, and that it should be each other, is something incredibly special which the movie gets right. Despite any lack of sparks early on, when the two sides of Siberia’s story merge and Katya is inevitably thrust into Lucas’s situation with higher stakes attached, it’s impossible not to feel protective of this union and the danger circling it.
Tumblr media
Yet much like the romance, the suspense level of Siberia is as slow-burn as it gets. Early on, the audience is given enough small glimpses into Lucas’s world and the existence he must adopt as a result of being a part of it. After a while though, the glimpses stop and all the audience is left with is the occasional call from Lucas to his missing partner that is depended upon to deliver intrigue. We are never totally sure of Lucas’s past, his motives or how he got to dealing with the kind of characters who are so hot on his tail. What’s more, we never get to find out. The action does finally ramp up in the last 30 minutes, and what happens on screen is diverting enough by action/thriller standards (especially in the telling, pulsating final few scenes). Yet it all seems to have been ripped away from a different movie altogether; one which DID in fact lay the groundwork for the kind of movie Siberia is trying really hard to be, or sadly thinks that it is.
Tumblr media
The nature of Siberia’s script means that Reeves gets to do some genuine character work here, which he more than proves capable at. The actor conveys the fear and sensibility of a man over his head, who also finds himself at a new crossroads in life. Ularu meanwhile radiates the screen and comes across as such a magnetic figure. The level of physicality and overall commitment she’s made to her character means you know so much about Katya without the actress ever needing to say a word. Lychnikoff makes for a perfectly menacing heavy while Dmitry Chepovetsky as Katya’s brother brings a surprising touch of depth near the film’s end. Rounding out the cast is a conspicuous brief supporting turn by Molly Ringwald as Lucas’s wife. Yet her role is so inconsequential, I very nearly forgot about her involvement until I started writing this very paragraph.
Tumblr media
I’m well aware that my complaints surrounding Siberia might lead one to believe that the film is an inconsequential waste of time. That’s certainly not the case. Siberia is far from straight to DVD fodder, but it’s also not first class either. The film lays comfortably somewhere in the middle thanks to it’s sometimes plodding nature and lack of almost total engagement with the genre it’s claiming to be. On the other hand, maybe because it came from the makers of two films I found to be so remarkable, I’m judging it a higher level than I otherwise normally would. Still, by the time Siberia ended, I found myself undeniably moved by the characters and somewhat devastated by the outcome awaiting them.

Certain Women, last year’s quiet cinematic work from director Kelly Reichardt, is a tale told in vignettes. Each unit of storytelling holds at least a kernel of recognizable, relatable truth for women in the audience: the male client who won’t take the word of his female lawyer Laura (Laura Dern), the older man who speaks to a husband and ignores the wife Gina’s (Michelle Williams) attempts at discussion, and a solitary ranch-hand (Lily Gladstone) yearning for connection.

Movie Reviews: "Justice League"
Movie Review: NPR
Tumblr media
Justice League is the latest chapter of the DC cinematic universe. But will our caped crusaders actually make a good movie after a tragedy required a change in directors? Superheroes used to be super individuals. These days, they tend to travel in packs - "Avengers," "X-Men," "Guardians" and, starting tonight in movie theaters across the country, the "Justice League." NPR critic Bob Mondello says that filmmakers working against serious odds have made a heroic effort. For Full Movie Review, Click Here.   Movie Review: Cinapse

It feels like an eventuality at this point, doesn’t it? Not to say that I’m not a willing participant in this endless barrage of superhero spectacle. I somehow find the time for every big new superhero film, after all. But this Justice League film has felt more like an obligation than anything else, even as Wonder Woman surprised and delighted us all. Marvel shows no signs of slowing as upwards of 3 titles were churned out in their MCU this year alone, and DC’s eventual gathering of the League simply had to happen. TALENTS BEIRUT : Creative Film Programming Workshop
20-24 September 2017, Beirut
Tumblr media
NAAS teamed up with Metropolis Cinema to launch a training program, within the framework of the fourth edition of Talents Beirut, dedicated to alternative film exhibition and creative distribution in the Arab region.
The three-day program, “Creative Film Programming: Between Year-Round Cinema and the Film Festival,” brought together twelve exhibitors, distributors and film programmers operating in eight countries in the Arab world and internationally.
The trainees were the representatives of venues operating in Sudan, Algeria and Iraq, and attended the training as part of “Cinapses”, a year-long project designed by NAAS to support its members in their endeavors to build new audiences, expand markets for film distribution, and broaden the geography of film circulation in the region.
NAAS and Metropolis designed a unique curriculum for Talents Beirut, bringing into focus the question of film curation in relation to outreach: Why is curation an essential part of what defines alternative cinema spaces? How can it contribute to making the cinema space sustainable? Programmers and distributors working in various contexts were invited to share with the participants their experience with running festivals, year-round film programs, and film releases and to discuss how these different schemes impact the development of a cinema space and its capacity to engage in a long-term conversation with local audiences, and eventually grow into broader networks.
