For those following the Chinook Indian Nation's work toward regaining federal recognition, this is an important endorsement. I posted a while back about a petition for the state of Washington to give the now-closed Naselle Youth Camp to the Chinook. The NYC is on unceded Chinook land, and specifically the portion of land the Chinook asked to retain almost two centuries ago as part of an unfulfilled treaty with the U.S. government.
A state task force formed to determine the fate of the NYC has officially recommended the NYC be given to the Chinook Indian Nation. Not only would this put the facility into the hands of people who will make excellent use of it, but the Chinook have also stated their intention to restore the on-site wastewater treatment facility and salmon hatchery. The former would additionally be a boon to the entirety of Pacific County, which currently ships its wastewater all the way to Centralia, WA, over 100 miles away from southern portions of the county.
If the NYC is indeed given to the Chinook, this will be an important statement that can be used to pressure the U.S. government to restore their federal recognition. To find out ways you can help the Chinook in this effort, please visit ChinookJustice.org.

There's this bus stop with a wall that has a poem written on it in multiple languages (not visible are the English and Spanish lines). It seems like the idea is to communicate that all these languages are beautiful... but in practice, it's just the Arabic calligraphy flexing so hard it absolutely blasts the other three and their plain Roman characters clear into the stratosphere
(For those wondering, the language before the Arabic is Chinuk!)

Tried translating the first few pages of Golden Kamuy into Chinuk Wawa; pages with illustrated gore below the cut
I’m a complete beginner; this was only possible with copious amounts of looking up words and grammar in the dictionary. I have no doubt I have made numerous errors. If anyone more experienced with the language wants to correct me, please please do so!!

LRB: I was reading the Chinuk Wawa dictionary years ago as part of a personal project and distinctly remember a word in there which was used to gloss the (outmoded, anthropological) term "berdache", something I'd best get across in english orthography from memory as "pi-klooxman" (the actual orthography is different but i'm bad at IPA) - nearest etymological english equivalent something like the modern "femme" or maybe the 2010s "demigirl" - anyway, this was a term which expressed gender-variance, seemed to specifically imply transfemme-adjacent gender-variance, and which the primary sources swore up and down was not an existing concept in local ndn society, while also explicitly naming a distant relative called "Nancy Jack" or "Jack Nancy" as an example. Cognitive dissonance babey

If you could magically acquire two additional languages and become a fluent or at least C2 level speaker, which ones would you choose?
Chinuk wawa and Lakhotiyapi. The first for land-acknowledgement reasons, the second for heritage reasons, and both for language preservation and indigineity reasons.
I did have some command of chinuk wawa for a while, but I've lost most of it from disuse, now that I've graduated and no longer spend time at the Native Student Center nor go to language nights at the local tribal offices. It would be nice to be able to magically keep what I've once learned, even as I acknowledge that a language is inextricable from its speakers and their culture, and that it's kind of cheating to want to keep the language when I'm not making weekly opportunities to speak it.
I've never had a opportunity to learn Lakhotiyapi. And I just. It's a hole in my life and my identity, a thing that was taken away from us by colonialism, and I fucking want it back.

The fics featured in the screenshot tagged Chinuk Wawa are all Zulu :/
that sucks that it was mislabeled! i did just go check ao3, though...there are currently 8 fics (at least, from what i can see when i'm not logged in) that are in Chinuk Wawa. I wonder how they got mistagged, but it seems like the original fic author probably changed their mistake? but...lemme go delete that reblog. thanks for letting me know! i didnt even notice that there were comments on that particular post

no, i mean the titles of those fics are in Zulu, NOT chinuk wawa, and if you go to santigold96’s ao3 profile the majority of their fics are ALSO in Zulu. the author did not invent any new chinuk wawa words or use old ones outside of “chinuk wawa”. not all nonwhite languages are the same and you shouldn’t believe something is written in a critically endangered language just because it is labelled so.
I definitely would just believe something as labeled. I don't know anything about zulu either so I'll just assume you're right. It's just a Tumblr post this doesn't matter lmao. Still sounds like the author wrote fics in Chinuk Wawa so my questions still stand

Woke up the other morning with a lingering vision in my head of the check-out aisles at grocery stores, instead of having tabloids and junk magazines, featured booklets with information about local native languages and customs like Chinuk Jargon and were gradually getting people more used to the history of the area instead of having pop culture shoved down their throats. Wish that were reality.

i hate to burst ur bubble about /post/701046292047167488/ but it has been clarified that the language used in the fics is actually zulu and they were just incorrectly labeled :( there are a few fics in chinuk wawa on ao3 though :) just not as many as the post portrays
Ah shit that sucks! Thats good that Chinuk wawa is still coming back, super cool to see

Related to last post: I wish I remembered the word itself, but one of my memories from the period where I was really intently trying to learn chinuk wawa is that the equivalent of calling cops "pigs" in wawa glosses to "rats"

Not to be rude, but that post about Chinuk Wawa is incorrect- the author mislabeled their fics and had actually written in Zulu, not Chinuk. Fortunately, there are actual Chinuk fics on ao3!
