The wolf paused upon making eye contact with the stranger. His posture watchful and relaxed, sensing the hunter’s benevolence. Not a single step was taken by the wolf until she spoke.

Even then, they were timid, slow. His nose hung close to the ground with puppy blue eyes cast up towards the hunter. Despite her kindness, he still feared being grabbed, tricked.

Yet the wolf still lapped at the meat before claiming it in his mighty maw. Instead of retreating with his snack, the wolf remained before her as a test.

It’s not home, but it was close enough. Eden missed the frost that blanketed his home lands at night. How it caused the grass and moss to crackle under his feet. The moon’s rays peeked between tree branches to light the forest path. He followed its guidance without question. His coat abandoned to feel the cold. Each chill and raised hair felt like shedding his guise to paw around on all fours.

The sound of foot steps from behind hushed the wolf’s longing. As foolish the pup was, he knew better than to shed his skin with an audience. “Oh, hey,” he turned with a close lipped smile towards the unexpected guest. “Out for a stroll? The skies aren’t particularly clear this time of year to star gaze.”
