Hi Vector Prime,
Were there any Transformers in the Beast Wars that had a werewolf as their beast mode?
Dear Listless Lycanthrope,
As the Beast Era dawned, Carnivac refused to undergo any upgrades into a more modern Predacon form, greatly preferring his wolf Pretender shell. However, it came as a surprise to him that after long periods of time, the synthetic Pretender shell material tends to become more unstable and malleable. And so on nights on Cybertron when the moons are both full, radiation from any nearby energon—including his own internal supply—degrades the integrity of his shell so much that it prevents him from exiting it. This fills him with unspeakable frustration and rage, and through great pain and sheer force of will, he transforms into a robot form while still inside his wolf shell. The result is a bipedal lupine lifeform, and reader, I must say, I shudder when I remember the time I saw it. Woe betide any robots near him in this state of lunacy.

Transformers: Mosaic #617 - "The Story Of Drift"
Originally posted on August 29th, 2011
Story, Art - Matt Marshall
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: Shane McCarthy’s pet OC, Drift, had a rocky history with the fandom until James Roberts did the magic trick of convincing everyone to like him. The Empty who Drift is speaking to loosely resembles Wheezel, but it isn’t an exact match; his pet is Howlback. Drift buys his katana on eBay. He’s next seen waiting in a queue to join the Autobots, alongside two characters with more impactful defection arcs from previous stories: Armada Starscream and G1 Carnivac. The use of a wonton font in the strip’s title can be assumed to be satirical of the orientalism riddled throughout McCarthy’s writing of the character, and we can probably also assume that this strip’s hateful attitude towards homeless people is similarly meant to parody McCarthy’s undercooked writing in Drift’s backstory—but I will say I’m really not sure what purpose it serves to frame Drift as a bratty teenage girl in the first panel. This strip was translated into Italian, German, and Spanish; see below for all of those, along with Matt Marshall’s remastered version of the strip from his Tales From The Matrix Keeper zine.

If we're going for Decepticons allegedly still alive by Age of Extinction:
Cyclonus, mysterious and unseen, Lockdown had him on his list to hunt down for info, nothing known about him so up in the air, I feel like most Cyclonus's would be good with kids
Loader, killed sometime in between the movies but masquerading as Superfund truck, mostly unknown but could be useful for another secret identity sneak in
Carnivac, looks like Steeljaw, a wolf altmode, only exists as a toy, maybe a cryptid in some woods getting by living in the woods
We also don't know when the others are caught so we could have like Onslaught or Berserker.
Maybe some comic characters:
Flatline, a little more mad science-y than most but its known he escaped and disappeared alive snuck away from Decepticons and Autobors alike
Like have Barricade grab the D Listers and shady guys maybe?
Yeah!!
I feel like with bayverse Cyc here we can lean a lot into some of his other iterations, plus his theoretical bayverse design just has to be pretty. Just. It's gotta be pretty.
Loader would be good for more disguise work, yes yes
Carnivac sounds cOOL AS FUCK
It was mecha like Onslaught I was thinking of, because there was a lot of time in between the end of DSotM and TLK so they very well could've not been caught yet
We shall always have the comics to borrow from🥰🥰🥰

Kinda want a G1 Carnivac cause he’s just a lil puppy
Tumblr media
plus his robot mode looks like he’s wearing an oversized hoodie
Tumblr media
but complete Pretenders seem to have doubled and tripled in price recently, so I think I’ll wait and maybe piece one together over time :o

Rodimus Prime’s Corner - Carnivac is a growling, howling, mad dog destroyer. He commits abominable acts with unrelenting glee and is always smiling, even in battle.

Some Carnivac i recently finished. Did the first one a few months ago for a short BW story but didn't get around to it until yesterday. Finding good refs for him was hard as he didn't appear in any Takara series, short toy limbs, & various models used for the comics weren't accurate
Tumblr media
The pretender shell based on a realistic gray timber wolf while keeping the toy features on, along with the cannon originally being shown on his back in the commercial. The werewolf design was based on a Ask Vector Prime entry

By the time Carnivac’s story received a follow-up, the UK comic had entered a strange stage. Simon Furman had become the the writer for the Marvel US comic, and took most of his energy and his best stories there. The UK comic became a filler in every sense of the word -- a black-and-white backup feature that chronicled silly, slice-of-life antics from Autobots and Decepticons left on Earth while the main theater of war had moved to outer space. The Earthforce stories had a tone that would have fit in better with the Transformers cartoon. featuring plots such as the Autobots crashing a Decepticon dinner party, or Starscream chasing the Insecticons around with a flyswatter. Even so, Furman returned to form with the story of Carnivac’s revenge.
Throughout the story, Carnivac is on a lone ramapage, tearing apart the likes of Needlenose, Spinister, and Snarler, even if it costs him his pretender shell. However, despite Carnivac’s image as a lone hunter who has lost his only companion, the story ends with his Wrecker friends coming to Carnivac’s aid, and Carnivac even offers the Mayhem Attack Squad a cruel mercy.
Throughout his entire character arc, Canivac remains a very unique transformer. A turncoat who never switches his faction symbol, an honorable Decepticon who nevertheless remains cheerful and friendly, a Pretender who wrapped himself in a shell but wasn’t afraid to show his true colors as a loyal friend, a Wrecker who can be cruel in his mercy and kind in his savagery.
Color reprints from Transformers Annual 1992.

oops. knew we were forgetting something.
[ID: The Stunticons in: "No-one Told Drag Strip." The Autobot ship is burning in the field where it landed. It's charred, ruined, bleeding black smoke into the sky; Rung's scorched hand is visible in the wreckage. Drag Strip sprints through the forest away from the wreck, unable to drive and aware how loud she is. She looks nervously over her shoulder. Then clawed feet hit her in the back, knocking her down. Back in the field we see her arm lying on the ground spotted with energon at someone's feet; that someone is holding her in the air while she screams: "No no no please!" A Decepticon whose torso is a wolf's mouth stands in front of her. "We're not going to kill you here," she says, "where no-one would ever know. The point is to show everyone what happens to deserters." Drag Strip, armless, bleeding, expressionless with terror, hangs by the spoiler in the grasp of another Decepticon. The margins are blank. end ID]

Minimus + 1
1) Something this character is truly proud of.
So one overlooked element of Magnus is that canonically, people- seemingly quite a few people- work under him directly. Stakeout and Carnivac as per Sins. And between those two we get the impression that he's thought of well by the people reporting to him, I think. Carnivac seems to think well enough of Mags, Stakeout takes his role seriously. I think given the difficulties Magnus has with not feeling worth respect and fearing he really isn't respected, especially post-war, that would mean a lot to him. That and Verity's good opinion, as an unofficial extension of that. (Remember, he sent Stakeout to help her do stuff; not keep her out of trouble.)
I mean. We definitely know he's proud of Verity liking him: he brings it up while drunk! So.

All this discussion of Nightshade's design has led to that now I would like to see the altmod in the form of a gargoyle with the head of Gomora from Ultraman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YES. Gomora! Now we just need Snaptrap to be Gamera, and we can have a battle of Kaiju between Nightshade and the Decepticons.
Go a little further, and we have George, Ralph and Lizzie references in Apeface, Carnivac and Skullcruncher for a Rampage parody.
A Gargoyle Beast Mode with Gomora's head is pretty great though. For the longest time, I kept picturing Lexington as a basis for Nightshade in terms of Disney Gargoyles.

Dear Vector Prime, besides the trio of Blood, Dauros and Gilmer was ancient Earth plagued by any other Decepticon Pretenders?
Dear Pretender Peeved,
Oh, certainly—the Autobots spent centuries trying to corral them. You may already be aware of Bludgeon and his fellow Pretenders’ rampage through ancient Japan; these Pretenders ranged across the entire world, so you may be interested to learn about their feats and fates.
Bludgeon likes to claim to have taught humanity the art of war, providing weapons and armor to various groups, relishing in the bloodshed and chaos he caused. The Autobots sealed him away on many occasions, but his final sealing took place in the 10th century. He had teamed up with a sorceress who sought revenge on the slayers of her father, and her magical manipulations multiplied the mystic Metallikato might of Bludgeon's Pretender shell. He was eventually sealed away under what would eventually become the city of Tokyo.
Iguanus rampaged across early Europe, seizing whatever he could from the tribes who lived there. He was finally sealed away under Stonehenge by Metalhawk and the other Autobot Pretenders, although they never discovered Iguanus' treasure hoard—not that they made any particular attempt to reclaim his collection of trinkets, busy as they were keeping humanity safe.
Stranglehold maintained a petty kingdom in Northern Africa, using his impressive physical might and near-invulnerability to maintain control over those nearby. He especially enjoyed wrestling with humans, viewing them as pitiful challengers. In the end, one such pitiful challenger managed to defeat Stranglehold by getting him in a Cobra clutch. In shame, Strangehold abandoned his kingdom, and wound up in the crosshairs of the Autobots, who sealed him beneath the Atlas Mountains.
Carnivac and Snarler terrorized the lands of Arcadia, causing havoc and famine as they destroyed whatever civilizations tried to intrude into their wilderness domain. Their teamwork kept them undefeated until the Autobot Pretenders teamed up as well, separating and binding them between a pair of mountains.
Octopunch was the least active of the Decepticon Pretenders, preferring to keep watch over the slumbering form of his master, Devil Z. To avoid the Autobots, he ventured out only when he was in dire need of resources, raiding ships while proclaiming the might of the Decepticon god he served. In the end, the Autobots managed to lure him into a trap off the Ryukyu Islands, sealed beneath a collection of sandstones.

Transformers: Mosaic #414 - "The Way It Goes"
Originally posted on September 14th, 2009
Story, Art - Ed Pirrie Letters - Dave Reynolds
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: This strip acknowledges Marvel UK artist Lee Sullivan, who worked on bits of “Time Wars”, which the strip references. Pirrie explained the premise of “Time Wars” in the deviantART comments: “Ultra Magnus and Galvatron have quite a history in that continuity. The fire effects are actually the sky as reality is being rent asunder due to the time-lost Galvatron being in the same time and place as Megatron. Galvatron spends the story remembering the events as he witnessed them as Megatron twenty years ago/at the same time. Galvatron and Megatron have teamed up and are taking out both the Autobot's AND Decepticons.” Now, in Marvel UK continuity, Ultra Magnus and Galvatron were planned to receive a final climactic face-off, after multiple confrontations in earlier storylines, but editorial changes meant this didn’t pan out. The gimmick of the strip is that you’re led to think the internal narration is that of Ultra Magnus regarding Galvatron, when in fact it’s the other way around! Inks of a preview panel below.

Forced Redemption Arc au: In Marvel G1 (UK), Catilla and Carnivac are Decepticon pretenders who defect to the Autobots at some point. So perhaps Ratchet isn't completely alone the whole time? There was also a guy named Warmonger who was a deep-cover Autobot infiltrating the Decepticons.
(Not sure about the timeline here)
Ooo?? That'd be interesting

Spinister Tells needlenose if he doesn’t stop being a pussy for being terrified he is going to be murdered by Carnivac because the Mayhem Attack Squad turned on Carnivac who is now hunting Mayhem down, Spinister will end up killing Needlenose himself. I have like, mixed opinions on Marvel Uk but this is one of my favorite stupid moments from it
