what is the true essence of womanhood?
Thinking to oneself “I am a woman” or “I am a girl” (which generally means “young woman”). You can’t always know what other people think, so you ask, and they will tell you.
It’s a simple yet reliable test, doesn’t involve looking at people’s junk, and won’t get you weird looks for asking about people’s junk. A lot of people seem to think it’s socially acceptable to ask strangers about their junk, but I don’t think anyone should be required under any circumstances to disclose the anatomy of their junk (c.f. “hi you don’t know me but how big are your labia”, “your job interview is going great so far, are you cut or uncut”, “we need to check your hymen before soccer tryouts”). I don’t think people should be treated differently based on what their junk looks like. I believe that deliberate misgendering is a juvenile form of bullying more often seen on the playground, for nonathletic boys or girls with unibrows. I don’t think of myself as a bully, so I’m not going to do that. I address people with their choice of title, name, and gender because that’s the polite thing to do and everyone is happier that way. Also, it doesn’t involve looking at people’s junk.

Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde's goals gave Madrid a 2-0 lead at the half, giving it the appearance that it would win. However, Benzema celebrated as though he had added a third goal only to have it disallowed for offside. But just as it looked like Madrid would win easily, Barcelona scored through Ferran Torres to make it 2-1 and set up an exciting finish. Rodrygo's late-game penalty ensured Madrid's victory despite Barcelona's valiant efforts to tie the score. Each team had prepared for the weekend very differently.

CHAPTER TWO
CHAPTER THREE
CHAPTER FOUR
CHAPTER FIVE
CHAPTER SIX
words : 4.1k
synopsis : things were always rocky for conrad and you. after the whole break up, will everything be the same the year later? or will it all turn to shit.
I hated him. Hated him with all the hate I had in my body. He made me hate Cousins as well.
Every year, my mom would send me away off to Cousins beach where I would stay with her best friend Susannah and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. I had easily bonded with the two of them, and then gotten in a relationship with Conrad. The Conklins would be there as well. Belly and Steven.
Conrad and Steven were 17, while Jeremiah, and I were all 16(turning 17 soon), but I was older than him by a few months, and Belly was 15, turning 16 soon.
He fucked it all up. He couldn't commit to one relationship, and we all knew that, yet he told me he would and I believed him.
Again, my mom sent me to them for the summer. I thought she wouldn't knowing the whole debacle that had happened the year prior.
"Mom, I really don't think it's a good thing if I go." I said to her as I sat at the kitchen counter.
"C'mon Y/N, Susannah misses you, and I'm sure Belly would like to see you as well." My mom said.
I groaned in annoyance.
I loved seeing everyone in Cousins, don't get me wrong. When I was there it felt like all of my worries were away. But now after the breakup, I just thought of everything that could go wrong this summer.
Tumblr media
The plane ride was six hours to Cousins from California and it took 30 minutes to get from the airport to the Fishers house. The whole time my mind raced on what would happen as soon as I stepped through the doors.
"Hi, I'm home." I said awkwardly loudly as I stepped through the door that was unlocked.
It was normal for the doors to be unlocked. Everyone knew each other in Cousins, and everyone basically was only there for the summer.
Throughout the house I heard a mixture of footsteps and gasps, people saying, "Y/N?", "Y/N is here?"
The first people to approach was Susannah and Laurel, coming out of the kitchen with a beautiful floral maxi dress.
"Oh my god, look at you! You've always been beautiful, but honey, look at you" Susannah said as she grabbed ahold of my cheeks before giving me a hug.
"I think I like the same" I chuckled.
"You do not look the same... You're growing up. You're in bloom."
Savannah had a way to say things. I loved it about her.
She let go as Laurel squeezed through, hugging me.
"Why didn't you tell us you were coming early?" Laurel asked.
I laughed a little, "I wanted it to be a surprise."
"Y/N!" I heard an excited voice say.
I watched as Jeremiah's body came sliding down the railing. He was in a white wife beater tank top and a pair of bright tropical shorts.
"Jere!" I exclaimed, opening my arms for him to run into.
Jeremiah and Conrad were brothers, but they couldn't be more different. Jeremiah was this energetic outgoing person, while Conrad was... well, he was Conrad...
"How have you been Y/N/N?" He asked as we both let go.
"A lot better, and you Mr. Fisher?" I asked jokingly.
From behind Susannah and Laurel, I could see long brown hair.
"Belly?" I questioned.
"Oh my god, Y/N!" She squealed, running up to me.
"You're absolutely so beautiful." I stated.
"No you are." She said back. We could've gone on and on about who was more beautiful, that was until he came.
I looked up and was met with Conrad's bright blue fucking eyes. He stared straight at me from the top of the stairs.
Conrad took a breath, "Hi, Y/N."
"Hi, Conrad..." I responded.
"Yo, Conrad! Y/N is here!" I heard Steven's voice from upstairs.
All of us laughed a little as we saw Steven make his way to the banister. His face was full of surprise as he saw me.
"She's actually here!" He said, running down to greet me.
Tumblr media
All of us kids went outside to the pool. Belly wore a cute purple bikini as I wore a blue one.
The house was for us, and our moms. Not for our dads. My mom rarely showed up. She only showed up for important events because she had a lot of work, but there were some years where she stayed.
"You're absolutely stunning." I said to Belly as we rested by the wall in the pool.
She laughed, "I look the exact same as last year."
"No. You look so much different!" I said to her.
"Well, look at you! you have new hair, new body, new attitude!" She said excitedly. "Do I have to get broken up with for this glow up?"
We both laughed at her statement.
"Should we mess with the boys a little?" Belly asked.
"Yeah, I think we should." I said, a smile growing on my face. "Ow! Jeremiah! Help! I think I sprained my ankle!" I yelled to the curly headed boy.
He came to me as soon as he could, sticking out his hand as I stuck out mine.
"Sorry." I said, a smile on my face. I watched as his face faltered though, as he realized what had happened.
I yanked the poor boy into the water, fully clothed.
He came up, splashing at the water.
"Y/N!" He yelled.
I got out of the pool. "I'm gonna head inside for a bit." I said to the group.
"Hi, sweetie." Susannah said as I closed the glass door.
"Hi!" I said to Susannah and Laurel as I sat at the island in the middle of the kitchen.
God I loved the kitchen. It was a beautiful green and white. I loved this house in general though, it was a gorgeous house.
"She's so beautiful." I watched Susannah mouth to Laurel.
"I know." Laurel mouthed back.
I only laughed at the two. I loved their relationship. I honestly wish I had a relationship like that when I got older.
"You should call you mom and tell her you got here okay." Susannah said as she finished chopping up the fruit.
"Oh, yes you're right. I told her I would call her and I got distracted." I laughed.
I finished calling her and returned to Susannah and Laurel.
"Is she coming for the Fourth?" Susannah asked.
"Yes, she would never miss it for anything."
"Oh, Y/N, I finished getting your room set up, if you wanna go unpack now, you can." Susannah said, giving me a smile.
I gave her a smile back, "Thank you, Susannah, I love you."
"Love you too!" She responded.
"I love you, Laurel!" I said, adding a laugh. I heard her and Susannah laugh before she responded as well.
Tumblr media
I loved my room at the Fisher's. It had beautiful white walls with high ceilings. As well as a gorgeous large window. My bed was perfectly made as well, and I had white sheets with dark blue flowers.
Most of the accents on the walls were dark blue as well. I could tell Susannah had done some work on my room since the last time I was here.
I began unpacking while looking at everything I had left from last summer. A stuffed white polar bear was on my bed and it had a little navy blue bow tie. Oh god how the memories flooded.
A knock at my door brought me back, "Come in!" I shouted.
"Come on! Let's go to the beach before dinner... please. " Belly said as she bounced onto my bed.
"I still have a bunch to unpack, Bells." I said to the girl, "And don't you have to go with your mom to Whale of a Tale?"
"I'll just skip it." She said, her face with a large smile. "Pleaseeeee."
"Okay, okay! We can go." I said to her.
She squealed excitedly, "Okay! I'll meet you down!"
I laughed quietly as I grabbed a new swimsuit. This one was a blue and white bikini and I loved it.
I saw Susannah and Laurel down in the kitchen.
"Laurel, I'm so sorry I'm stealing Belly, but we were gonna go swimming and I know you have Whale of a Tale today bu-" I rambled.
"It's okay, I'll go with her." Susannah said, a large smile forming on her face.
Tumblr media
"You want to race?" I asked Belly as we stood in the sand.
"No, I can't possibly keep up with you, you're always running, I see on your stories." She joked.
Before I knew it, the girl had sprinted, dropping her towel and flip flops.
"Cheater!" I shouted and laughed as I too dropped my things, running to go after her.
Tumblr media
"Steven, I swear to god, look at that phone one more time and it's going in the screen basket." Laurel said as we ate dinner.
Belly and I looked at each other before laughing.
I was crammed in between Jeremiah and Conrad, and it was interesting. I avoided Conrad as much as I could.
"It's just, we want to see your beautiful faces." Susannah said as she smiled at all of us which made Belly and I laugh even harder.
Steven continued to go on his phone, doing god knows what. I watched as Jeremiah snatched it from across the table and threw it in the basket that was on the other side of the room.
"Dude, are you kidding me?" Steven said in disbelief.
Jeremiah on the other hand was cheering for himself, "Boom, Nailed it!"
"We get it, you've been working out." Steven said.
"Someones jealous about Jere having a nicer body..." Belly and I said in sync.
Conrad hadn't said anything at all during dinner, and I knew people could feel the tension.
"Aren't you leaving for training camp soon?" I asked Conrad, turning to him.
Susannah cut in, "Uh... he quit football."
All of us looked at Conrad in shock. He was good at football and not only that, but he was going to do college football.
"He can always change his mind though." Susannah said, as she grabbed a bread roll.
"I'm not changing my mind." Conrad said, no emotion whatsoever. "I'll just sit on the bench anyways."
"Well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you gonna do all summer?" Laurel asked.
Steven shot up in surprise, "Oh, dude, you can work at the club with me and Jere."
Conrad shook his head no though.
"Wait, you guys are working this summer?" Laurel asked in disbelief.
Jeremiah began talking, "Yeah, I'm lifeguarding and Steven's working in the snack shop."
Something seemed to spark in Susannah as well as she began rummaging through things.
"Oh Y/N and Belly! I almost forgot. I have a surprise for the two of you."
Two envelopes were in Susannah's hands. One addressed to Belly and the other addressed to me.
"What.. uhm. What is that?" Laurel stuttered.
"I got them both invitations to be a debutante." Susannah said proudly
There were a bunch of comments being made about the whole debutante ball and about Belly, but I zoned it all out, staring at the invitation.
"Y/N." Susannah's voice said, bringing me out of my state.
"Hm?" I asked.
She motioned to the envelope.
"Oh, yeah, I'll think about it..."
I walked up the stairs to the hall with all of the kids rooms. God, you could hear Steven belting to As the World Caves In.
I don't know how I was gonna do anything with him singing so loudly, so I grabbed a red bikini and changed into it, grabbing a towel and heading outside.
Of course, Conrad was sitting out there, but instead his feet were dipped in the water and he had a joint in his mouth.
I felt his gaze on me as I put my towel down and jumped into the cold water. I stayed under for two minutes before going back up for air.
"Wasn't sure if you were trying to drown yourself or not." Conrad said blatantly.
"Glad to see you wouldn't help even if I was." I said to the brunette sarcastically. "And I thought you said smoking pot was bad for you."
"Never said that." He stated.
"Pass." I said, motioning towards the joint in between his fingers.
"No." He laughed.
I rolled my eyes at him. And I still hated him.
"Hey, are you actually thinking about doing the debutante thing?" Conrad asked after a few minutes.
"Don't know, don't know why you would care either." I shot back at him.
"Why are you acting so different?" Conrad scoffed.
"You should be asking yourself that same thing." I said to the boy.
"Y/N, I know you." Conrad tried to say.
"Yeah? Do you?"
Before he could respond a scream was heard with the glass door being slid open.
"First bonfire of the summer!" Jeremiah's voice screamed. I heard Steven laugh and another set of footsteps.
"Can I come too?" It was Belly.
"Wait, I wanna go." I added in.
The boys looked at Belly and I.
"Uh no." Steven said.
I mean it, Steven is the most dramatic boy I have ever met.
"The moms are getting everything set up for your movie night." Jeremiah said to Belly and I.
The boys said their various goodbyes before running off.
Belly had grabbed my towel for me to dry off and the two of us went inside.
"Brownies are going in!" We heard Susannah say.
"Got put the DVD in please." Laurel said to us.
"I actually have a headache, I think I'm just gonna go to sleep early. It's been a busy travel day." I said to Laurel and Susannah.
"Aw, alright, honey. Goodnight, love you." Susannah said as she kissed my forehead. I gave Laurel a hug before walking up the stairs.
I turned around though, making eye contact with Belly and winking at her. She nodded in response. We had an idea.
As soon as I heard Belly's door close, I ran to her room with an assortment of clothing.
"Hi Taylor!" I said to the blonde on the phone.
"Hi Y/N!" She responded.
I changed in the corner of Belly's room as her and Taylor were discussing their new drama. They always added me in on new things going in which I appreciated.
"Oh my god, Taylor, Y/N's outfit is so cute." Belly said as she dragged me in the camera frame.
I was wearing a green flowy tube top that was sheer at the stomach and had a floral design with orange and pink colors. As well as a short white mini skirt.
"Belly, what's that pink thing in your bag?" I asked, pointing to a hot pink strap.
"That's the surprise!" Taylor shouted through the phone.
Belly pulled it out, revealing a short hot pink dress.
"Oh my god." Belly and I said in unison.
Belly laughed, "No way in hell. And won't you be able to see my underwear in that?"
"Wear a thong." I suggested.
Belly had gone into this rant about how unhygienic thongs are how they're basically flossing your butthole which Taylor and I laughed at.
Tumblr media
Belly and I somehow sneaked past the moms as they watched their movie. I'm surprised they never saw us walk past them, but there was a mix of crying and laughter while watching the movie.
We walked to the beach, which was actually quite long considering the beach was our backyard, but they were further down.
As we made it closer, we could see a bonfire and here loud music.
"I'm gonna kill Taylor." Belly mumbled to me which made me laugh.
"Yo, gas station girl!" A man called out. We both turned our attention and he looked at least 20...
"You've gotten yourself a treat." I said, winking at her before walking away.
"Where you coming from?" The guy asked. I'll just say it. He was a weirdo.
"We just came from another party." I said, breaking in. Belly looked like she was gonna pass out.
"Sweet. Hey, take my beer." He said as he kept pushing his beer onto Belly.
She kept rejecting the beer, but he continued to insist.
"Got a boyfriend back home? Either of you?" He asked
I watched and spotted Steven in the crowd, but Belly seemed to have gotten to his name first.
"Steven!" She called out.
"What are you guys doing here?" He asked, looking at us. His eyes stayed on Belly for longer though, "And what the fuck are you wearing?"
Sadly, the gas station guy jumped in, "I invited her. So who the fuck are you?"
"I'm her brother and she's 15 you pedo." Steven snapped.
Belly stammered, "I-I'm almost 16."
I shot her a glare, knowing we were already in deep trouble.
I watched as Belly and Steven got into their little argument as he moved her away. God this was gonna be an embarrassing night.
She had tripped over something, I'm not even sure what, and fell and ate dirt...
I ran towards the poor girl who just fought back at my arms.
"Belly, it's me." I said to her calming her down.
I looked over to see Conrad standing with a girl who looked at Belly and I. Well everyone looked at Belly and I, but not as long as Conrad did.
"I thought you hated the Red Sox." I said to the brunette as. He had a Red Sox baseball cap on.
"Who are you?" The girl next to him asked.
"Who are you?" I asked her.
"Nicole, Conrad and I went to the deb ball last summer."
It felt like someone had stabbed me throughout my whole body. Like I was heartbroken again.
"Didn't you say that deb balls are bullshit and debs are sheep?" I asked Conrad.
"I didn't..." Conrad said, but I knew he wanted me to shut up.
"I hate you so much. Go fuck someone." I said to Conrad before walking off. Belly had already walked off before.
"You're an asshole, Y/N." Conrad shouted back.
I sat in the sand close to the water. Belly sat with me as well.
"I hate them, they're absolutely dicks." I said to her, throwing a rock into the water.
She didn't say anything, only hummed in response.
I watched out of the corner of my eye a boy tapping Belly's shoulder, "Flavia?
"Hi?" Belly questioned as she looked at me and him.
"It's me, Sextus."
"What did you just say to us?" I asked.
He stammered, "no, no, no, Sex-tus. From your seventh grade Latin Convention" He pointed to Belly.
I looked at Belly raising an eyebrow, seeing if this guy was normal. She nodded slowly.
I got up from the sand, brushing it off and walking to the other side of the campfire with not much light. I wanted to give Belly her night.
The water was cold as it reached my ankles. It was cold out and I could tell that I should've brought a jacket.
There was a lot of noise and rants coming from behind, but I didn't look, not until I saw Conrad's figure.
fuck. what did he get himself into.
I walked closer to the fight as someone had pushed Conrad and I was hit in the head with his elbow.
"Fuck." I grunted as I put a hand to my forehead.
"Are you okay?" I felt Jeremiah's arms around me.
"Cops! Cops!" I heard people yell.
Jeremiah had opened the door to his car for me, "You okay to buckle yourself up?"
"Yeah." I responded, holding ice to my head that they had used in a cooler.
"Okay, because Conrad's a big baby when he's drunk." Jeremiah muttered.
I saw Belly walking with the same guy, he didn't seem rude or anything, but we needed to get home.
"Belly, come on get in the car!" I yelled out to her.
"Cam can get me a ride home, right, Cam?" Belly asked the guy next to her.
He nodded eagerly "Yes, yes I can."
Jeremiah stepped into the conversation, "No, you're not getting into a car with someone you just met."
Cam held out his hand, "I'm Cam. Cameron."
"Your name is Cam Cameron?" I asked jokingly.
"No, it's j-just Cam, but we actually know each other from the Latin convention in 7th grade." He explained.
"Okay, no offense, but no, Belly, get in the car." Jeremiah ordered.
Cam, scratched the back of his head, "Um you should probably get into the car... but the whaling boat that I'm interning on leaves the dock at dawn every morning, so I was wondering you'd wanna come." He stuttered over some of his words, obviously flustered.
Belly laughed a little, "Uh yeah, yes. I mean how else will you get your hoodie back?"
It was absolutely so cute how flustered the two were with one another.
Jeremiah started the engine and then turned it off, "Fuck, Steven! Belly come with me, and Y/N, watch Conrad, we'll be right back."
He shut the door and with that I was left with a drunk passed out Conrad.
I felt as he touched my hair, "Your hair is always like a little kids, it's always a bit messy." Conrad said in awe.
I grabbed my hair back, putting it on my chest.
A knock on the window and a flashlight shown on my eyes made me already want to kill myself even more.
"Have you kids been drinking?" An officer asked. And at that moment. I knew we all fucked up.
Tumblr media
"Officers, thank you for bringing them all home. I promise you it won't happen again."
The officers were let out and I never thought I would see Laurel angry, ever.
"How could you guys be so irresponsible?" Laurel asked as she looked at all of us.
Steven talked first, "Mom, it's not that big of a deal, it was a mistake. And the cops were looking to break up the bonfire either way."
"You don't think this is a big deal, Steven? The cops picked you guys up for underage drinking, that's a pretty big deal, Steven."
Laurel scoffed at us, "Were you guys smoking?"
"What?" Conrad asked loudly.
"Keep your voice down, Susannah's asleep on the couch." Laurel scolded.
"Just so you know Laurel, I didn't drink tonight... I was the DD, I swear." Jeremiah said, raising his hands up in defense.
She ignored his comment though, turning straight to Conrad.
"You're the oldest, what the hell has gotten into you recently?" She questioned them.
I had never been so scared in my life.
"And you two, since when did you guys ever leave the house without telling anyone? And what the hell are you wearing, Belly?"
"It's Taylor's. And why aren't Y/N and I allowed to go out?" Belly asked.
"It isn't that you guys aren't allowed to go out, of course you are, but you didn't tell us. How didi you guys even get there?"
"We walked..." I mumbled.
The rest of the five minutes we spent yelling quietly and arguing with one another.
Laurel sighed, "Just go to bed you guys."
She held back Conrad and I, "I know you both are going through things and you can always talk to me, but please, tell me what's going on."
"Nothing." I said before he could even answer. I moved past her hand, walking upstairs off to my room.
The silence in my room was interrupted not long after with a knock. I sighed as I opened the door. Conrad stood there, which I didn't expect at all.
"Hi." I said.
It was awkward... "You know you're gonna have a black eye tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah, and it's already tomorrow." I responded.
He nodded awkwardly, beginning to walk over to his room.
"Hey, do you remember anything that happened last night?" I asked. "Never mind, you were pretty wasted."
"I always remember everything when I drink."
Tumblr media
I sat on the beach and I just kept replaying the events of the night before. God it made it seem like I liked Conrad Fisher again, which I didn't. Because I couldn't.
Speaking of Conrad, he had come behind me, smoking a joint.
"Let me have a puff." I said to him.
"No."
"Why?"
"My mom and Laurel would actually murder me."
"Fine. Since I can't smoke, then you can't either." I stated.
Conrad sighed, "Why do you even care?"
"It's bad for you. Just because we broke up doesn't mean I won't look for your best interest."
"Hey, let's go pick up some of the good muffins before everybody else gets up."
I just stared at Conrad.
"This summers going to be different. I'm sorry." I said to him, walking off towards the house.

The Summer I Remembered You (C.F) (Part 6)
Tumblr media
Summary: Taylor comes to town for Belly’s birthday and suspects something is going on with yn and Conrad.
A/N: Can we talk about how cute this gif is🙏🏻 also i’m getting these all out so fast i’m already working on ch. 7
Me and Belly both had Summer birthdays. This was different though, she was turning 16. This day was going to be about her and only her.
Taylor was coming into town, and as much as I love Belly, Taylor can get annoying. She means well though. Frankie, my best friend hates her.
Her and Frankie are both really overbearing.
I rushed downstairs and it was 8:12 exactly. Belly would be coming down soon. I wore a cute white crop top with a light blue jean shorts.
My hair was straightened, and I had decided to wear small, small hoop earrings. Susannah said they made every girl pop out.
Conrad was slouched at the island counter eating his cereal. The first thing I thought of was last night. The second thing I thought of was how bad that is for his back.
“Morning, yn!” Jeremiah says, smiling over at me before helping Susannah with the decorations again.
“Morning guys. So I beat Bells down here?”
“Just in time.” Steven says.
I smiled and when I sent a quick glance to Conrad, he didn’t even acknowledge my existence.
This day is about Belly. Not Conrad.
I shake it off and then Belly walks into the room. She looked really pretty. Her outfit was cute.
“Happy birthday!” We all say in unison, and even Conrad whispers it a little.
I walk over to Belly and put my arm around her shoulder, “Belly’s 16, she’s not a baby anymore.” She then sticks her tongue out at me.
“Nah, she still is.” Steven blurts out.
Jeremiah just smiled at Belly. It was kinda cute.
I think I had coke to terms with it, that I was just pretending to like Jeremiah to get my mind off of, him.
Suddenly I had the craziest thought. If Jere liked Belly, than she might like him and forget about Conrad.
It would make me feel a lot less guilty about the past.
Last summer, Age 15 (Almost 16)
It had been 2 weeks since we had gotten there.
It was a lazy night in cousins. Me and Conrad were home alone. Usually, we would have a pillow war or snuggle up on the couch and watch something. I maybe even would listen to him play the guitar.
After the whole rain thing and coming home and holding hands, not to mention Susannah seeing it, I had been questioned by her the whole week. I think she was doing it to Conrad too but he didn’t say anything to me.
I tried to go on and act normal with Conrad, but lately it was hard to look at him like a best friend. He made me question everything.
I was sitting on the counter top when Conrad slouched against the fridge.
“That’s horrible posture, you’ll hurt your back.” I say.
“Hey, stop judging.”
“I’m not judging, just giving tips.” I then place a chip in my mouth and smile.
“What if my moms cancer comes back one day?” He blurts out.
I felt my body get stiff. I was sure Susannah’s cancer wouldn’t come back, I knew it. And if it would, she would fight it. She wouldn’t give up.
“What’s wrong, Conrad? Why are you thinking about this?” I say, and the fridge was close enough to the counter so I reached out and tug on his shoulder.
He moves off of the fridge and closer to me, and we’re only inches away. If I leaned in, we could kiss.
“I don’t know. It just scares me.”
I felt really bad, because I may of come off as harsh. I softened my gaze at him.
“Don’t be, it won’t happen again. Besides, Susannah’s a fighter, the best one I know.”
Conrad smiled, and I could tell it wasn’t a “I believe you” type of smile, more like a “thank you for being here” smile.
I smiled and wrapped my arms around him, and he leaned his head against my shoulder. I felt a big amount of pressure shift into me, and he was fully leaning on me now.
“Thank you for being here.” He mumbled in the crook of my neck.
“Of course. I’ll never not be here. Your my best friend.”
He didn’t respond, and I didn’t mind.
That’s what we were, that’s what we’d always been.
Or had we ever been? Because right now it feels like we’re a couple, and the scary thing is I liked it. I didn’t mind it at all.
Present day:
“Open mine next!” Jeremiah says, and Belly picks up his gift.
He had given her a key, key chain. It was really cute and It was because she could drive now and he had been giving her lessons.
Steven gave her a Princeton crewneck, Susannah pearls that were beautiful, and Laurel a book.
“Here!” I say, handing my gift to Belly.
I felt the smile creep up on my face as she unwrapped my gift. “Oh my gosh, you got me the dress I wanted?!”
I nodded. “Saved up for it.” Laurel and Susannah smiled, and I could tell Susannah was impressed and liked it.
“Thank you, yn. I love it.” Belly says through a smile. I send Jeremiah and Steven a “I had the best gift” look.
Then, Conrad gets up and places a little box next to belly. She opens it and I could see her eyes flutter.
“Awh, that’s so cute.” Belly says, pulling out a little wave necklace. It was pretty cute.
“It was kinda last minute, but we’re like at the ocean so it works.” He shrugged.
Leave it to Conrad to make a good gift sound so unappealing and horrible.
Belly sent a half smile and tucked it away.
Conrad sighed, “Well, I gotta get to the Marina. Cleveland needs my help.” He looked at me for a second before walking out of the room.
Jeremiah noticed the mood and then smiled, “Hey Bells, wanna drive a little bit before we have to pick up Taylor?”
Belly’s mood instantly changed, “Yeah, sure, yn do you—”
I shook my head and put my hand up, “No, no, you guys go ahead.”
Susannah then perked up, “This is perfect! Yn, I’m painting you now.”
I groaned, “Actually, Bells—” I say jokingly, and everyone laughs.
“Too late now!” Susannah grabs my arm and pulls me away from everyone and I send a “Help me” look to Belly before entering the backyard.
It was hot out, and as much as I love summer I can’t stand the heat. It makes me feel sticky.
Susannah painted, and it had only been 20 minutes but it felt like forever.
“So, what else are you doing this summer?”
I shrug, “I don’t know, probably just chilling out.”
Susannah smiles, and I knew she had gotten me, “I think you should get a job, maybe at the Marina?”
I laughed a little, because there was no way I was working at the Marina. “Um, I don’t really think-”
I could tell Susannah’s mind was filling with ideas, “Oh! It’s not bad trust me. I know the guy who owns the place and it’ll be super casual, only like 2 to 3 times a week, he pays well too.”
I sighed, knowing Susannah’s mind was made up.
“Oh, and Connie! You guys can go there together.” She said through a smirk.
Fuck.
“Oh, Susannah—”
She looked ahead of me and waved at somebody, and I turned to see it was Conrad. He was already back?
“Connie! Come here.”
He walked over to us but he didn’t make eye contact with me.
“Con, yn is gonna work at the Marina.”
I could see the smirk on Conrad’s face, and it was so smug. Smug piece of shit.
“yn? At the Marina?”
I scoff, “I’ll do just fine.”
“Mom, yn is scared of boating.” I could feel my cheeks burn as he said this. He could at least acknowledge me if he’s gonna say things like that?
Susannah smiles, “That’s alright, you can teach her too.”
Conrad had already tried to teach me to boat a couple of years ago, but it didn’t end well. We just ended up laughing and getting a tan.
Conrad shrugged and then walked inside.
“Yn! I missed you bitch!” Taylor hugged me and I smiled a little.
“Me too.”
“Okay, we all have to go into the pool and catch up, I need to get all the tea.”
Me and Belly nodded and we went upstairs to change.
I could just tell that something had changed in Belly, I didn’t know if it was because of me and Conrad, but I needed to find out. I can’t loose her.
Once we were in the pool, me and Taylor and Belly were on one side while Jeremiah and Steven were on the other.
“So,” Taylor began, looking at both of us, “What’s the boys situation?”
Belly shrugged, “I don’t really know.”
I gasped, “Belly! Your basically dating Cam Cameron.”
“Ooo yes! He’s coming to dinner tonight right?” Taylor looks at Belly and she simply nods. Taylor turns to face me.
“What about you? Boys?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know. There’s this kid named Josh?”
Josh. I hadn’t talked to him in a while. I wonder if he’s going to Nicole’s big party tonight. I would see him there if we went.
The boys started talking about a hot girl they knew and Taylor said, “We know your talking about us!”
Steven laughed, “You wish.”
Then Taylor and Belly trailed to the middle of the pool, and I followed.
“Let’s play chicken!” Taylor half screamed.
Not chicken, anything but chicken. I knew there was an uneven number and this was my chance to get out. “I’ll sit this one out guys.”
Belly nodded, “You can play the next?” And I just gave her a half smile. At least she was giving me something.
Belly and Jeremiah were partners and so were Taylor and Steven. I looked at the way Jeremiah’s arms gripped Belly’s and I noticed some tension. Big tension. The way she grabbed his hair. Was something going on with them?
Belly and Jeremiah won which is when Nicole and Conrad walked outside. Nicole looked like she was judging us big time.
“Hey guys— are you playing chicken?”
“Hey..” I say awkwardly. Who was she to judge us? She gripped Conrad’s hand and It made me angry. Stop it. Don’t be angry.
They sat at the edge of the pool with their ankles in and flirted with each other.
We decided to play volleyball and we set up the nets and split up into teams. It was girls against boys and it was uneven so Jeremiah asked Conrad to get in but he said no. Of course.
After a couple of rounds, Taylor got ready to serve and then hit Nicole in the head. It was kinda funny.
“Oh my gosh, Nicole are you okay?” Belly said worried.
“I’m so— sorry.” Taylor says through a little laugh.
“Taylor.” Belly said in a scolding manner.
“I’m so sorry Nicole, feel better okay?” I knew why Belly was saying this. All because of Conrad. Conrad then offered to help Nicole and they got up but before he went inside, he looked back at me for a second.
That second felt like forever. It was like he was staring into my soul. And then it was over. Just like that.
Taylor then leaned in close to be and whispered, “What’s going on?”
I shook my head and got out of the pool, everyone else following.
Dinner that night was good, Belly brought Cam over and he even kissed her on the lips at the table. It was cringey, but cute.
Belly decided that we should go to Nicole’s party, and I was very happy to do so. I needed to get drunk, blasted even. I had to forget. About everything. Him.
Once we got there, Jeremiah and Steven dispersed and Conrad had rushed in before us and started drinking. Go figure.
Nicole then came up to me and Belly, “yn! Belly! Hey!”
Taylor looked visibly uncomfortable, but she didn’t say anything.
“Hey Nicole.” I say through a smile.
“Belly, I need you to come with me.” Nicole says grabbing her arm and Belly mouths sorry to me and Taylor before walking away.
“Wanna grab a drink?” I said, half sulking and I didn’t even realize it. My friends had become Belly’s friends and I suddenly felt really lonely. This summer started to not feel so good.
“Yes, please.” At least Taylor was sulking with me.
We went to the drinks table and then I started pounding them down. Taylor noticed but didn’t say anything because she was pounding them down too. We were both upset but I didn’t know why she was, but sometimes it was better to sulk in silence like this.
I looked up and then saw Conrad talking to a group of guys and I started longer than I should have. He looked back at me and then away again which only made me feel shitty and pound down more drinks.
What a night this would be.
A/N: what do we think? I promise you guys the drama will be soooo good. trust me. Enjoy!! should I make a master list?

love sick c.f.
Tumblr media
this book has also been published on wattpad. same username as the one on here. i update faster on there.
you and conrad had a secret relationship two summers ago, when you were 15 and he was 16. you broke up with him because your younger sister, belly had liked him, and you were afraid of hurting her. now, flash forward, you were 17, and you thought you had gotten over him, but maybe you haven’t
iv. deb shopping
part 1 part 2 part 3
i had no clue what was going on with conrad, why he was acting so different this summer, making me wonder what happened to the same conrad who would go on and on about infinity.
i slept in that morning, because of the fact that i stayed up way too late at that bonfire, but i eventually got up since i had work today.
when i went downstairs, dressed in a white lifeguard tank top, and red shorts, laurel, steven, and jeremiah were downstairs.
conrad was on the couch, and jere was making a 'hangover smoothie' for him, while steven was standing behind him, looking over his shoulder.
"do we really have to physically sit for our portraits?" jeremiah complained to laurel. "can't she just- look at a picture on her phone or something?"
"right?" i agreed with him.
jeremiah backed up a little from steven, having enough of him hovering over him. "okay, get out." jeremiah pointed at the door.
steven laughed. "what. why?"
"she needs to see you in the flash to capture you essence." laurel said, fixated on her laptop. "while you're still young, and full of hope."
"so poetic, mom." i joked, while steven and jeremiah laughed.
"her words." laurel rolled her eyes at us with a smile.
"well, conrad does not have hope, actually. he's hopeless." jeremiah insulted, causing me to laugh a little. "but! my hangover smoothie, it cures all."
"can you please just hurry up." conrad rushed him from the couch.
"just go back to bed. alright?" jeremiah shot back to him, and steven started looking over his shoulder again.
jeremiah put a hand on steven's chest. "alright, seriously, steven. get out. this is a delicate science."
"she hasn't painted you since you were little. i think it would be nice to have these portraits for when you're older." laurel added in.
"oh, no." steven joked. "when i'm older, they'd have like, holograms i can watch of myself, you know."
"or, this is why we have technology." i say. "where we have pictures? on our phones?"
jeremiah started the blender, causing conrad to jolt awake.
"just sit for your portraits." laurel told me and steven. "you don't see conrad complaining.
"he'll complain when he's actually conscious." i shot back at laurel.
jeremiah went to the couch and tapped conrad. "hey. here."
"come on, man. hurry your ass up, i can't be late to my first day of work." steven rushed jeremiah. "those little country club boomers are gonna tip me so hard they won't know what hit 'em!"
i made a disgusted look at steven. "ew. steven, i swear."
"come on, y/n." jeremiah laughed. "my boys gotta get that bread."
"stop." i shook my head at him.
i look over to see belly walking in the kitchen, and i give her a small smile.
"good morning." jeremiah says to her in an enthusiastic tone.
"belly, where have you been?" laurel asks her in a serious tone. "is that a bruise."
belly stands next to me and i run my fingers over the bruise. "mom, relax, she tripped when we were at the bonfire and landed on her face." i lied, i knew belly wouldn't wanna tell the actual story
"doesn't look that bad." conrad said from the couch, i look over at him, and made eye contact with him for a few seconds before returning my focus back to belly.
"uh, cereal?" jeremiah asked belly.
"yeah, hit me." belly softly responded.
"oh, my god!" susannah ran into the kitchen. "belly and y/n are going to be debutantes!" she hugged both of us.
belly laughed. "it's really not that big of a deal."
i'd forgotten all about the whole deb thing. it'd be hard trying to balance a summer job and being a deb, on top of that, i'd have to find a date.
"i'm sorry, like those two? my sisters, right there?" steven teased us.
"shut up, cretin!" i shot back.
"okay, this is going to be so much fun!" susannah fantasized. "just you wait. there's the tea, the auction, the- ball, of course.. i gotta write this down. we need to go shopping!"
"this sounds expensive." laurel said.
"oh, don't worry, laur, it's on me." susannah smiled. "it was my idea after all."
"y/n, are you sure you wanna do this?" laurel asked me. "it doesn't seem very you."
in truth, not really. but if it made susannah happy, it made me happy. i had to do it for her.
"it's not." conrad, once again, added his two cents from the couch.
i don't know how he went from how he used to act towards me to.. this.
"conrad, could you please be a little more supportive?" susannah told him. "now, which one of you are gonna be belly or y/n's escort to the ball."
"not me." conrad immediately responded.
"shocker." i say, in a sarcastic tone.
"i went last year." conrad finished his sentence.
"me neither. i swore off balls." jeremiah told us, causing steven to laugh. "the dances dude!" jeremiah said, laughing.
"wow, guys!" i say, sarcastically. "stop fighting over us."
"i'm not going with either of you." belly finally spoke up. "i am going to find my own date.
"it says debutantes require instruction, morals, and social etiquette." laurel read off her laptop.
"i'm going for a swim." conrad leaves through the back door, as i watched him go.
"yeah, y/n could use some etiquette." steven laughed.
"and you wonder why you don't have a girlfriend." i rolled my eyes.
all the sound drowned out as i watched conrad from the window, in his shorts, and no shirt on. i missed how things used to be.
i felt a hand on my shoulder. "you alright, y/n?" jeremiah asked me.
"yeah." i tried push aside anything feelings. "we should probably go soon."
"wait." susannah spoke up. "before you go, we have shopping to do!"
"seriously?" i asked. "i have work. i'm not going shopping."
but that wasn't true. susannah is a really convincing person, so before i knew it, i was shopping around stores with susannah, laurel, and belly, for the debutante thing.
i tried on different dresses, all colors, and different accessory's, hats, sunglasses, and bow, bags over my hands and arms.
then, i had to try on a debutante dress, i found a beautiful white long dress, i loved it, but maybe conrad and laurel were right. this whole thing was not my scene.
what have i done?

bad in the bones (ch.10) (c.f)
a/n:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We have to get back,” Conrad says. My dress is still soaking wet, dripping onto the cement underneath me. Conrad’s hair drips water onto my forehead and I wipe it away with the back of my head.
“Do we?” He gives me a lazy smile and extends his hand to me. “They’re going to kill us.”
“And who’s fault is that?” He tilts his head to the side and I push my wet hair out of face. His hand finds my cheek and he presses his lips against mine softly. “I’m sure there are spare clothes somewhere around here,” he says. He leads me inside of the country club and instead of going down the hall, we take the stairs up to the second floor. “I think there’s a closet somewhere in here.” He pokes around the rooms, opening and shutting door when he doesn’t find what he wants.
“We’re leaving a trail,” I laugh, looking behind us at the water drenching the carpet.
“Hold your dress up higher,” he remarks. I do what I’m told but huff at him which makes him chuckle. “Here.” He opens the door to a dressing room. In the corner there are clothes hanging up on a rack with a row of vanities in the middle. “I think this is where the girls all got ready,” he tells me. I walk toward the row of dresses hanging up. They’re not all white, but most of them are which feels tacky to wear. Like wearing white at a wedding. “What are you going to wear?” I ask as he opens a wardrobe on the other side of the room.
“The boys dressing room is a few doors down. I’ll go find something.” He pulls out a purple dress from the wardrobe and holds it out as if he’s trying to picture me in it. “Put this on. I’ll be right back.” He drapes the dress over one of the vanity chairs and then disappears out of the room. I strip out of my wet dress, leaving it in a pile on the floor and slip on the purple one. It’s silky and hugs my curves exactly where they need to be hugged. It’s a perfect fit. I brush out my hair with my fingers and fix my makeup with whatever I can find on the vanity but nothing I do is going to make me look like I didn’t just jump in the pool, but it’s better than nothing.
I wander down the hallway until I find the only door that’s cracked open. I peek inside, trying not to make a noise. Conrad is standing in front of a wardrobe similar to the one he pulled my dress out of trying to untie his tie from around his neck. “Need some help?” I ask quietly. He smiles when he sees me and nods his head. He’s still wearing his wet suit, the fabric damp under my fingertips as I undo the knot.
“That dress looks beautiful on you,” he whispers. I drop the tie to our feet and work the jacket off of his shoulders.
“Thank you,” I whisper back without looking up at him. The jacket drops to the ground and I start undoing the buttons of his shirt. “We gotta get you out of these wet clothes, huh?” I can feel his heart beating faster under my hands and he nods slowly. He dips his head so our noses touch and then we’re kissing again. My fingers stop working out the buttons and instead they’re gripping his shirt and pulling him closer to me. His hands grip my hips and we stumble backward until we hit one of the vanities, the edge of it ramming into my lower back but I don’t feel it.
Conrad lifts me up and sets me down on the vanity, his tongue sliding into my mouth. I open my mouth and let him in, his tongue taking over my own. His hands slid up my thigh and under my dress, his fingertips pressing into my skin. I don’t bother trying to undo the buttons of his shirt anymore, I just rip it open and off his body, desperate to feel his skin on mine.
Conrad pulls away from me, leaving me cold and empty. A moan escapes my lips at his absence and she smiles, tracing his thumb along my swollen bottom lip. “I don’t have anything,” he says. “I’m sorry.”
I shake my head. “We should get back anyway, huh?” I ask. I think he can feel the disappointment in my voice because he kisses me once again, this time soft and sweet, and nods. “Then let’s get you changed.”
Our table is empty when we return. I stop just clear of the door and when it slams shut behind us, I feel the entire room looking at us. But they’re not really. They’re looking at our people - Belly, Jeremiah, Susannah, and Laurel. They’re all huddled in a group. Jeremiah and Belly’s backs are to us. Susannah looks like she’s crying. While my feet stay put, Conrad’s move him as fast as possible to his mom.
I can’t hear anything over the music but I can tell they’re all angry. Or sad. Conrad’s face is all scrunched up and he’s holding his hands out to his brother as if he needs to steady him but Jeremiah’s shoulders are tense. Belly’s shoulders slouch and Jeremiah yells, “you knew! You knew and you didn’t tell me!”
“Jeremiah,” Conrad says more like a warning than anything. Jeremiah’s hands are on Conrad before Conrad finishes speaking and they’re tumbling around, a mess of flailing limps. Susannah is crying and begging her boys to stop and I snap back. I was hoping I was imagining it all but the cries are real and the fists hitting faces are real.
“What is going on?” I ask Belly when I reach her side. I raise my voice above Laurel crying for the boys to stop. Jeremiah is on the ground with Conrad on top of him, trying to pin him down. Belly doesn’t speak. Her lower lip quivers and she looks like she’s going to cry but can’t do anything to stop it. I’m about to put my arm around her but then Jeremiah gets a punch in and now Conrad is on the ground and instead of my arms going to Belly, they’re reaching for Conrad.
Susannah grabs Jeremiah by his shoulders and he softens at her touch but when I grab Conrad, he jerks away from me. Our eyes meet and I can see him soften, just a little bit, but then his face goes stoic. “My mom is sick,” he says. “Her cancer is back and I knew this whole time.” I open my mouth to speak but he doesn’t let me. “Jeremiah just found out. While we were out there, in the pool making out, he found out.” He shoves a finger toward in the direction of the pool.
“I didn’t know,” I mumble, shaking my head. I reach for him instictively and he takes a step back, shaking his head at me.
“Of course you didn’t know. No one knew and he shouldn’t have had to find out like this. I should have never left with you. This was a mistake from the beginning, you even said it yourself.” I think my heart bursts inside of my chest. Cracks, actually. My heart explodes. Disintergrates. Completely combusts.
“You don’t mean that,” I whisper. I’m suddenly very, very aware of all the eyes on us. Belly’s eyes on us.
“I do.” He gives me a curt nod and then turns around and walks away.
I feel like the walls are moving further and further away from me and I’m left, all alone, in the middle of the dance floor. I feel like I did when we were in the boat, paddling through the water except I’m paddling alone and going in circles.
“You and Conrad?” It’s Belly that speaks to me first. At least, she’s the only voice I can hear. “You and fucking Conrad?” She repeats harder this time, spitting at me as she speak. I don’t want to look at her, but I do. I look at the tears in her eyes, the red flush on her cheeks, and her shaking hands.
“Belly,” I breathe. “Belly let me explain.” I start to beg her. I’m practically going to my knees but she throws her hands up and storms away.
I sat outside of Belly’s door all night. At first, I was knocking and begging for her to open it and let me talk. I begged her to listen to me. I could hear her shuffling for hours but eventually, it all went quiet and I was sure she fell asleep, but I kept whispering to her. Hoping that she would open the door. Eventually, she did. She opened the door so fast I fell backward, barely catching myself with my hands. “You’re still out here?”
“I didn’t think you’d open the door,” I told her honestly. She shrugged and opened the door further, silently inviting me in. I scrambled to my feet and went into her room and she shut the door behind me. “Thank you.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked before I could finish my sentence. She crossed her arms over her chest, closing herself off to me almost completely.
“How could I?”
“You’re my cousin. My best friend,” she pleaded, dropping her arms at her side.
I stepped toward her but she stepped away so I stopped. “You could have told me.”
“You would have been upset. I didn’t want to upset you. I know how you feel about him.” I tried to quiet my voice to a whisper but Belly didn’t want to be quiet. Her voice was harsh and stern.
“I’m upset anyway. Were you ever going to tell me? Or just be with him behind my back until we went home? And then what? You’re my family but so is he.” I knew what she was insinuating. That I would leave him after summer was over and never tell her. “You should have told me.”
“You’re right.” I threw up my hands. “You’re right, I should have told you but I fell in love with him, okay? And I panicked. If I had told you and you told me not to be with him, I wouldn’t be with him and that thought alone scared me more than anything.” Belly’s face softened for a moment and I felt the breath I was holding in release itself. “I’m sorry.”
“You would have stopped if I asked you to?” She asked and I nodded. She sighed and walked over to me, plopping herself down on the bed next to me. I hesitated, but sat down too.
“Belly, you’re my family. I can’t help that we fell in love but I should have told you.” She nodded and then put her arm around me and it was over. Just like that. No yelling, no screaming. She was just my Belly again.
“I would never have told you to stop seeing him,” she whispered.
“Well, I’m pretty sure we’re over anyway,” I told her. I just kept picturing his face in my mind. The way he glared at me before leaving me all alone. “I doubt he wants anything to do with me. Besides, that’s the least of his worries right now. Me and him.”
I could see the way her face fell. I put my head on her shoulder and she put her head on mine and we sat there in silence for a long time before eventually, we fell asleep in her bed.
The sunrise woke me up the next morning. Belly was still fast asleep next to me so I slid out of her room quietly and walked down to the beach. The path to the beach is quiet and it’s not yet scorching hot out. When I reach the sand, I take my shoes off and that’s when I see him. He’s sitting in the sand leaning back on his hands and watching the waves crash. I almost turn around. I think I should turn around. But I don’t.
“Fancy meeting you out here,” I tease quietly, hoping not to startle him. He barely flinches. I stand behind him and wait for him to acknowledge me before inviting myself to join him. He waits so long to say anything I almost leave.
“You stalking me or something?” I think I feel a weight leave my shoulders when he talks. His voice no longer screams in my head in anger. “You can sit down.”
“I wasn’t sure.” I hesitate still but sit down next to him. “I don’t know what to say,” I admit. I want to put my hand on his shoulder. I want to look him in the eyes and see the same thing that I saw just yesterday at the pool but all I can do is sit as still as a statue and watch the water.
“I should apologize.”
Conrad stays quiet. I feel him breathing next to me. I know he’s thinking about what to say because his eyebrows are knitted together and he’s chewing the inside of his mouth. “I’m sorry I distracted you this weekend. I’m sorry that this was your last summer here with your family and I ruined it.” I rush out all my words before I can regret them. “I hope that you don’t regret us but we can forget this ever happened.” I stand up, shake the sand off my clothes and start to turn away.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” His words shoot through me like knives. “Forget this ever happened? I love you. I can’t forget that.” I don’t turn around because I can’t look at him. I think I might break if I do. He loves me. “You didn’t ruin this summer. You made it bearable. It’s not your fault I didn’t tell Jeremiah. Please look at me,” he begs.
“I can’t look at you because if I look at you then I’m never going to leave and I have to leave,” I tell him. Laying in Belly’s bed, I made the choice to go home. It’s already set in stone in my mind and I know that if I look at him, I’m going to change my mind. “We shouldn’t be together, Con.”
“Stay as my friend,” he rushes out.  “I need you.”
“I can’t just be your friend.” His hand wraps around my wrist and he spins me
around so I have to look at him. I swear there are tears in his eyes that he’s blinking away. “I can’t be your friend,” I repeat. His eyes dance from my eyes to my lips and I know he doesn’t want to be just friends.
“Why can’t we be together?”
“The same reasons that we should never have gotten together in the first place. Belly and your mom and all this shit you’re dealing with that you’re not focused on because of me.” Conrad rolls his eyes and cups my face with his hands and I can’t help but lean into him, at least just a little bit.
“I need you,” he tells me again. “Please don’t go.”

NATIONAL SECURITY DECISION
DIRECTIVE NUMBER
STRATEGIC DEFENSE INITIATIVE (U) (crossed out)
The current strategy of nuclear deterrence based upon the threat of retaliation has been successful to date; but it is subject to a number of destabilizing factors in the next generation. The U.S. has actively sought to strengthen the stability and credibility of deterrence and reduce the threat of nuclear war through modernization of its strategic forces and by making significant arms reduction proposals. The Soviet Union's unwillingness thus far to consider true arms reductions, and its massive increases in strategic offensive forces have necessitated continued U.S. actions to preserve our deterrent capabilities. NSDDs 12, 13, and 91 establish Administration policy on strategic forces modernization and nuclear weapons employment and outline our continued adherence to the concept of nuclear deterrence as the means for protecting the security of the United States and our allies. (S) (crossed out)
However, given the uncertain long-term future of offensive deterrence, I believe that an effort must also be made to identify alternative means of deterring nuclear war and protecting our national security interests. In particular, the U.S. should investigate the feasibility of eventually shifting toward reliance upon a defensive concept. Future deterrence should, if possible, be underwritten by a capability to defeat a hostile attack. (S) (crossed out)
New technologies appear to offer the possibility of helping eventually eliminate the most destabilizing threat to the U.S. and its allies, ballistic missile attack. The technology and policy studies undertaken in response to NSSD 6-83 have confirmed that a defense against ballistic missile attack might eventually be developed and could play a critical role in enhancing deterrence. The Defensive Technologies Study described a technology program of R&D and demonstration which might eventually lead to a decision to proceed with development of a ballistic missile defense system. (S) (crossed out) There is also growing concern over a potential Soviet breakout from ABM Treaty. Evidence of Soviet efforts to develop a ballistic missile defense capability makes it incumbent upon the U.S. to do its utmost to acquire its own strategic defense

New Releases
July is shaping up to be a great month for exciting YA reads! What's on your TBR list this month? Here are the new releases coming out tomorrow, 7/11!
I'd Rather Burn Than Bloom by Shannon C.F. Rogers
Packed with voice, this is a powerful coming-of-age YA novel about a Filipina-American teen who tries to figure out who she really is in the wake of her mother's death.
Some girls call their mother their best friend. Marisol? She could never relate. She and her mom were forever locked in an argument with no beginning and no end.
But when her mother dies suddenly, Marisol is left with no one to fight against, haunted by all the things that she both said and didn’t say. And when Marisol sleeps with her best friend's boyfriend—and then punches said best friend in the face—she's left alone, with nothing but a burning anger. And Marisol is determined to stay angry. After all, there’s a lot to be angry about. But as a new friendship begins to develop, Marisol reluctantly starts to open up to her, and to the possibility there’s something else on the other side of that anger—something more to who she is, and who she could be.
A Song of Salvation by Alechia Dow
From the author of The Sound of Stars and The Kindred comes a YA space opera about a reincarnated god and a grumpy pilot on a mission to save a beloved space DJ and stop an intergalactic war.
Zaira Citlali is supposed to die. After all, she’s the god Indigo reborn. Indigo, whose song created the universe and unified people across galaxies to banish Ozvios, the god of destruction. Although Zaira has never been able to harness Indigo’s powers, the Ilori Emperor wants to sacrifice her in Ozvios’s honor. Unless she escapes and finds Wesley, the boy prophesized to help her defeat Ozvios and the Ilori, once and for all.
Wesley Daniels didn’t ask for this. He just wants to work as a smuggler so he can save enough money to explore the stars. Once he completes his biggest job yet—bringing wanted celebrity Rubin Rima to a strange planet called Earth—he’ll be set for life. But when his path crosses with Zaira, he soon finds himself in the middle of an intergalactic war with more responsibility than he bargained for. Together, Zaira, Wesley, and Rubin must find their way to Earth and unlock Zaira’s powers if they’re going to have any hope of saving the universe from total destruction.
All the Yellow Suns by Malavika Kannan
A coming-of-age story about a queer Indian American girl exploring activism and identity through art, perfect for fans of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
Sixteen-year-old Maya Krishnan is fiercely protective of her friends, immigrant community, and single mother, but she knows better than to rock the boat in her conservative Florida suburb. Her classmate Juneau Zale is the polar opposite: she’s a wealthy white heartbreaker who won’t think twice before capsizing that boat.
When Juneau invites Maya to join the Pugilists—a secret society of artists, vandals, and mischief-makers who fight for justice at their school—Maya descends into the world of change-making and resistance. Soon, she and Juneau forge a friendship that inspires Maya to confront the challenges in her own life. But as their relationship grows romantic, painful, and twisted, Maya begins to suspect that there’s a whole different person beneath Juneau’s painted-on facade. Now Maya must learn to speak her truth in this mysterious, mixed-up world—even if it results in heartbreak.
My Week with Him by Joya Goffney
From Joya Goffney of  Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry, comes a stirring YA coming-of-age, best friends-to-lovers romance about a girl named Nikki who plans to run away from small-town Texas, but ultimately finds that her oldest friend, Mal, just might be the one who’s been there for her all along. Filled with heart and humor, this novel captures complex family drama, friendship, and love. For fans of  I Wanna Be Where You Are  by Kristina Forest and  Counting Down with You  by Tashie Bhuiyan.
Nikki can’t wait to leave Texas and follow her dreams of a music career . . . After a painful betrayal by her sister and a heated argument with their mother, Nikki is kicked out and finds herself homeless. She decides to go to California to pursue her singing career. When her best friend, Malachai, discovers her plan to flee Texas, he begs her to spend the remainder of spring break with him. He believes that over the course of a week, he can convince her to stay in Texas, or to at least graduate high school.
But their plans are interrupted when Nikki’s little sister Vae goes missing. Nikki is forced to work alongside her difficult mother as they set off in search of Vae, with Malachai’s support. Will Nikki find a reason to stay in Texas, or will this spring break be the last time she sees them? Through her emotional journey, Nikki ultimately finds the love she’s always been missing and discovers the power of her own voice.
