previous part
you and conrad had a secret relationship two summers ago, when you were 15 and he was 16. you broke up with him because your younger sister, belly had liked him, and you were afraid of hurting her. now, flash forward, you were 17, and you thought you had gotten over him, but maybe you haven’t
vi. belly's birthday
TODAY WAS BELLY'S 16TH BIRTHDAY.
i had the day off from work, since it was her birthday.
laurel had breakfast on the table ready for belly, and susannah had gotten her baby blue and white balloons.
all of us were downstairs, waiting for belly, and finally, she came downstairs.
"morning, everyone!" belly said with enthusiasm.
"there's the birthday girl!" susannah hugged her. "looking like a vision in floral. happy birthday!
jeremiah leaned down to hug belly. "happy sweet sixteenth bells."
"belly's getting old finally!" steven teased. "happy birthday.
"happy birthday sweetheart." laurel hugged her with a warm smile.
belly laughed. "thanks everyone."
i hugged belly. "happy birthday, belly. mom made your pancakes."
"actually, uh- i'm not really hungry." belly told me and laurel.
"oh." laurel said, but i knew she was disappointed.
"shall we open gifts?" susannah shrugged.
"you're gonna love mine." jeremiah confidently told her.
one thing i did notice though, was conrad hadn't said happy birthday.
we went into the living room, to open gifts, belly had opened her gift from laurel, and it was a book.
"it's the latest edition." laurel spoke up. "i got it from a rare book dealer."
"thanks mom." belly said with no enthusiasm.
laurel rolled her eyes with a smile. "turn to the book marked page."
belly obliged. "oh, yeah i remember susannah telling us to recite this." belly laughed, all of us reciting the sentence.
"open mine now, belly." susannah handed her a gift.
belly opened the gift, and it was a pearl necklace. "oh wow, they're gorgeous, thank you, susannah."
susannah went over to belly, to put the necklace on her. "my mom gave me these pearls for my sweet sixteen."
"they look great on you, belly." i smiled at her.
"oh! i'm next." jeremiah gave a gift to belly.
"it's a good luck charm. to help you pass your drivers test." belly put the charm on her wrist.
"perfect. thank you."
steven threw a shirt at belly. "think fast!"
"wow steven! i can't believe you actually spent money on me." she sarcastically smiled.
it was a princeton shirt. "relax, i just didn't want you stealing mine when i get in next year."
"i didn't know you were still considering princeton." laurel said.
"you know, i think i'm gonna apply for some scholarships, and dad thinks i can get some financial aid." steven told her.
i went over to belly, handing her my gift, with a smile. "open it."
belly tore off the wrapping, opening the gift to see keys.
"what are these?" she asked with a smile.
"car keys. with the help of susannah, once you pass your drivers test, there's a car waiting for you, it's at home." i explained.
belly's jaw dropped. "y/n! thank you so much!" she went to hug me.
i laughed and hugged her back. "you're welcome."
"conrad, do you wanna give belly her gift?" susannah asked.
conrad stayed silent for minute before responding. "sorry, i forgot."
my heart shattered when i looked to belly, seeing her smile drop, her looking so sad. how could he forget?
"uh- that's cool." belly played it off. "i wasn't really expecting anything anyway."
"listen.. i gotta go." conrad broke the tension. "i promised cleveland i show him some knots today, so.. happy birthday belly."
"hey." jeremiah called to belly. "why don't we take my car and practice driving before we have to pick up taylor from the bus stop.
"okay." belly agreed. "y/n, wanna come?" belly asked me.
"no, you two go ahead, i have.. something to do."
i got up, going the same direction conrad went.
i had caught up to conrad, grabbing his shoulder, causing him to spin around, facing me.
"really? you forgot?" i asked with anger in my voice.
i was going to take a more.. calm approach, but i was just so angry, my emotions got the better of me.
"well-" he began to speak, but i already know whatever he was going to say was going to be stupid, so i just cut him off.
"listen, i don't know what the hell's going on with you, but you've been acting like an asshole." i insulted.
he rolled his eyes at me. "grow up." this wasn't the same conrad i had seen last summer, i looked into his eyes, he had no remorse for what he said. "i forgot a gift one year."
"it's not just that!" i was starting to lose my patience with him, using my hands to emphasize my point while i spoke. "you've been- just been a dick since we've gotten here! you weren't always like this."
"oh, so now suddenly you care? didn't seem like you did two summers ago." conrad stared coldly into my eyes.
are you serious? he wanted to do this?
"seriously?" i blinked a few times before speaking again, and i scoffed. "you wanna go there?"
conrad sighed, he could probably sense as well that this was starting to escalate. "just forget it."
"fine." i simply said, before walking away, leaving him there.
how could he say that i don't care about him? when that's all i've done for him.
TWO SUMMERS AGO
me and conrad were at the beach, there were so many stars in the sky, and it was pitch black outside.
we both couldn't sleep, so we had decided to go the beach.
"can't sleep?" he asked, seeing me downstairs.
i turned around to see it was him, a smile appearing on my face. "nah."
he motioned his head at the door, basically silently asking me if i wanted to leave. i nodded my head, putting on my shoes.
we were at the shallow part of the water, the water going up to my knees.
i looked at the sky, he glanced at me. "what do you see up there?"
"a star shaped like a bunny." i joked. "you see it?"
"yeah." he said, and i started to laugh.
"you liar." i splashed him with water.
his body turned to me and he splashed me back.
we kept on splashing each other, and i kept laughing.
he had grabbed my wrist to get me to stop splashing him, pulling me close to him.
i stopped splashing him, looking into his blue eyes, and he looked into my eyes.
he took the hand off my wrist and cupped my cheek, i looked down at his lips, getting more and more nervous by each second.
he started to lean in, and then he kissed me. i kissed him back. i couldn't help it.
i knew if belly found out, she'd probably hate me, she liked conrad since she was little, but i just couldn't help myself.

v. first rehearsal
THAT NEXT DAY, i didn't have work, i had my first debutante rehearsal, and no date.
i got ready, i wanted to make a good first impression. i put on a silk pink dress, and tied the front pieces of my hair back with a pink bow.
laurel drove me and belly to the country club.
laurel told me my mom would be proud of me, for doing this.
i saw jeremiah working, and i looked over at belly. "hey, belly, you go ahead, i'll meet you in." i smiled at her.
once she walked away, i went up to jeremiah.
"jeremiah." but he seemed to not notice me, walking. "jeremiah!" i called again, and his gaze met my eyes.
"oh, my god. wow, y/n, i didn't even recognize you." he lets out a small laugh.
"i know, i look like an idiot." i look down, laughing a little too, this wasn't my usual style.
"no you don't, you look good." he complimented, and i smiled. "let me walk you over."
as we walked over, we both just talked, like we usually do. we walked into the room, arm in arm.
jeremiah laughed. "i still never thought i'd see the day where you're a debutante."
"yeah, yeah, so funny." i sarcastically said.
"jeremiah." a lady walked up to us.
"paige."
"where's your shirt?" she asked.
"it's always a pleasure." jeremiah kissed her knuckles. "this is y/n. the young woman my mom told you about. my future wife." he winked.
i hit his arm, he was joking, but i did not see him that way.
"she's late." paige said.
"i'm- sorry." i apologized.
"you're at table 2."
jeremiah took one of the cookies. "jeremiah, those are for the girls!" paige warned.
then jeremiah glanced over at me, before leaving. "knock 'em dead."
i smiled as he left, he was a good person to have in my life, one of my best friends.
i saw belly sitting by herself, looking uncomfortable, i looked next to her and saw the girl conrad was kissing at the bonfire, and the girl steven was with.
i sat down next to belly. "finally." belly said, sighing.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚
"i told my mom the only way i would do this is if i can bring my girlfriend." marissa talked. "'cause i thought it was be a deal killer, but the club has been surprisingly chill about the whole thing."
"i'm honestly shocked." dara said.
"dara, i was expecting a conversion camp." marissa told her.
"yeah, but cousins likes to pretend to be woke." nicole told them. "trust me, my family deals with it constantly."
"the things we do for college applications." i mumbled, slouched in my seat.
"don't worry y/n, you'll get in everywhere." shayla assured me.
"probably not." i said.
"you sure?" she smiled. "steven told me you play 2 sports and get good grades."
"wait- where are you applying?" belly looked at me.
"uh.. i told you. a few different schools. but my main one is usc."
"what about you?" marissa asked belly.
"oh, belly's only a sophomore, right?" nicole made sure. "i think that's what conrad told me."
"yeah, i'll be a junior in the fall." belly politely smiled.
"and, y/n, you'll be a senior, right?" nicole asked me.
"yep." i nodded my head.
"so, is this your first summer here in cousins?" dara asked us.
"no, we've been coming here our whole life." i told her.
"yeah, they're like family friends with conrad and jeremiah." nicole told dara.
"uh, so, are you and jeremiah like- a thing?" gigi asked me. "are you going to take him to the ball?"
i nearly choked on air when she asked that. "jeremiah? no way. he's only my friend."
"gigi has had this thing for jeremiah." nicole laughed.
"ever since he got abs." shayla teased, and the girls started laughing and talking.
"relax, i'm not into jeremiah fisher." shayla added after a comment.
"oh, so you're just noticing his abs?" dara asked.
"she's too busy eye-fucking the waiter." marissa joked.
"dude!" shayla laughed. "that's belly and y/n's brother."
"oh.. gross." belly looked down.
"what's it like for you both living with jeremiah and conrad?" dara asked. "conrad's so mysterious."
i did love living with them every summer, jeremiah's my best friend, and so was conrad, but conrad's completely done a 180 this summer i don't even know anymore.
"i-"
"hello debutantes!" paige spoke up.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚
after the rehearsal, i noticed belly had a good time, her and nicole had started forming a bond, with nicole being belly's big sister for the deb.
and belly had gotten a date, with the guy from the bonfire, cam.
the four of us sat on the couch, bored out of our minds.
"yo, this shit is so boring, can we go somewhere?" jeremiah asked.
"yeah, where?" steven asked.
"we could go into town." conrad suggested.
"buy some weed from that guy." i also suggested.
"nah, he got arrested. last summer." conrad told me, not looking at me
steven smirked. "we could go to the drive in."
"dude, gross, no. i-i don't wanna watch belly hooking up with some kid in the backseat of a mini van." jeremiah shut down.
"yeah, we shouldn't go." i agreed with jeremiah.
"yeah, actually." conrad had finally spoken up. "lets go to the drive in."
"actually?" steven said.
"yeah." conrad simply responded. "why not?"
it took me a second to realize they were being serious, and my eyes widened a bit. "no, we're not going to the drive in."
they didn't say anything to me, which just caused me to talk more. "this is her first date, if you guys go, you'll ruin it, just don't go."
conrad threw the keys to steven, with a smirk, and i rolled my eyes.
"you all are so immature." i insulted. "i'm going to my room. you better not ruin her date."
ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚
later that night, belly came into my room looking sad.
"belly? what happened? did things not go good with cam?" i had so many questions.
"no.." belly looked down. "they went great actually. but the boys ruined my date."
my lips slightly parted, i wasn't really shocked, no, but i was disappointed. "seriously?" i scoffed. "i told them not to go."
"and- me and conrad had an argument." belly ranted.
she told me all about the argument, including his little comment where he had said 'why don't you look in the mirror some more.'
i didn't get it. why was he acting like this?
but yet, i still defended him, i had to. i knew he cared about belly, and she needed to know that. right know she thought he didn't care about her at all.
"listen," i put my hand on her shoulder. "he cares about you. i don't know what's going on with him either, i'm not going to justify it, but he's probably going through his own things. don't let it get to your head."
"thanks." belly smiled. "and things weren't so bad, cam kissed me on the way home." her cheeks had turned a little pink.
a grin appeared on my face. "you serious? oh my god, isabel conklin."
we spent the rest of the night talking, watching movies in my room, and eating snacks."

iv. deb shopping
part 1 part 2 part 3
i had no clue what was going on with conrad, why he was acting so different this summer, making me wonder what happened to the same conrad who would go on and on about infinity.
i slept in that morning, because of the fact that i stayed up way too late at that bonfire, but i eventually got up since i had work today.
when i went downstairs, dressed in a white lifeguard tank top, and red shorts, laurel, steven, and jeremiah were downstairs.
conrad was on the couch, and jere was making a 'hangover smoothie' for him, while steven was standing behind him, looking over his shoulder.
"do we really have to physically sit for our portraits?" jeremiah complained to laurel. "can't she just- look at a picture on her phone or something?"
"right?" i agreed with him.
jeremiah backed up a little from steven, having enough of him hovering over him. "okay, get out." jeremiah pointed at the door.
steven laughed. "what. why?"
"she needs to see you in the flash to capture you essence." laurel said, fixated on her laptop. "while you're still young, and full of hope."
"so poetic, mom." i joked, while steven and jeremiah laughed.
"her words." laurel rolled her eyes at us with a smile.
"well, conrad does not have hope, actually. he's hopeless." jeremiah insulted, causing me to laugh a little. "but! my hangover smoothie, it cures all."
"can you please just hurry up." conrad rushed him from the couch.
"just go back to bed. alright?" jeremiah shot back to him, and steven started looking over his shoulder again.
jeremiah put a hand on steven's chest. "alright, seriously, steven. get out. this is a delicate science."
"she hasn't painted you since you were little. i think it would be nice to have these portraits for when you're older." laurel added in.
"oh, no." steven joked. "when i'm older, they'd have like, holograms i can watch of myself, you know."
"or, this is why we have technology." i say. "where we have pictures? on our phones?"
jeremiah started the blender, causing conrad to jolt awake.
"just sit for your portraits." laurel told me and steven. "you don't see conrad complaining.
"he'll complain when he's actually conscious." i shot back at laurel.
jeremiah went to the couch and tapped conrad. "hey. here."
"come on, man. hurry your ass up, i can't be late to my first day of work." steven rushed jeremiah. "those little country club boomers are gonna tip me so hard they won't know what hit 'em!"
i made a disgusted look at steven. "ew. steven, i swear."
"come on, y/n." jeremiah laughed. "my boys gotta get that bread."
"stop." i shook my head at him.
i look over to see belly walking in the kitchen, and i give her a small smile.
"good morning." jeremiah says to her in an enthusiastic tone.
"belly, where have you been?" laurel asks her in a serious tone. "is that a bruise."
belly stands next to me and i run my fingers over the bruise. "mom, relax, she tripped when we were at the bonfire and landed on her face." i lied, i knew belly wouldn't wanna tell the actual story
"doesn't look that bad." conrad said from the couch, i look over at him, and made eye contact with him for a few seconds before returning my focus back to belly.
"uh, cereal?" jeremiah asked belly.
"yeah, hit me." belly softly responded.
"oh, my god!" susannah ran into the kitchen. "belly and y/n are going to be debutantes!" she hugged both of us.
belly laughed. "it's really not that big of a deal."
i'd forgotten all about the whole deb thing. it'd be hard trying to balance a summer job and being a deb, on top of that, i'd have to find a date.
"i'm sorry, like those two? my sisters, right there?" steven teased us.
"shut up, cretin!" i shot back.
"okay, this is going to be so much fun!" susannah fantasized. "just you wait. there's the tea, the auction, the- ball, of course.. i gotta write this down. we need to go shopping!"
"this sounds expensive." laurel said.
"oh, don't worry, laur, it's on me." susannah smiled. "it was my idea after all."
"y/n, are you sure you wanna do this?" laurel asked me. "it doesn't seem very you."
in truth, not really. but if it made susannah happy, it made me happy. i had to do it for her.
"it's not." conrad, once again, added his two cents from the couch.
i don't know how he went from how he used to act towards me to.. this.
"conrad, could you please be a little more supportive?" susannah told him. "now, which one of you are gonna be belly or y/n's escort to the ball."
"not me." conrad immediately responded.
"shocker." i say, in a sarcastic tone.
"i went last year." conrad finished his sentence.
"me neither. i swore off balls." jeremiah told us, causing steven to laugh. "the dances dude!" jeremiah said, laughing.
"wow, guys!" i say, sarcastically. "stop fighting over us."
"i'm not going with either of you." belly finally spoke up. "i am going to find my own date.
"it says debutantes require instruction, morals, and social etiquette." laurel read off her laptop.
"i'm going for a swim." conrad leaves through the back door, as i watched him go.
"yeah, y/n could use some etiquette." steven laughed.
"and you wonder why you don't have a girlfriend." i rolled my eyes.
all the sound drowned out as i watched conrad from the window, in his shorts, and no shirt on. i missed how things used to be.
i felt a hand on my shoulder. "you alright, y/n?" jeremiah asked me.
"yeah." i tried push aside anything feelings. "we should probably go soon."
"wait." susannah spoke up. "before you go, we have shopping to do!"
"seriously?" i asked. "i have work. i'm not going shopping."
but that wasn't true. susannah is a really convincing person, so before i knew it, i was shopping around stores with susannah, laurel, and belly, for the debutante thing.
i tried on different dresses, all colors, and different accessory's, hats, sunglasses, and bow, bags over my hands and arms.
then, i had to try on a debutante dress, i found a beautiful white long dress, i loved it, but maybe conrad and laurel were right. this whole thing was not my scene.
what have i done?

iii. bonfire
part 1 part 2 part 4
ME, JEREMIAH, AND STEVEN WALKED INTO THE BACKYARD, where we found belly and conrad at.
belly in the pool, and conrad sitting, his feet in the pool, with a cigarette.
"first bonfire of the summer!" jeremiah cheered.
jeremiah was always like this. the life of the party, he could get everyone in a good mood. one of my favorite traits about him
i rolled my eyes jokingly. "oh my god, shut up. you've been doing this for the past five minutes."
"alright, we're totally taking my car." steven told us, then turned to conrad. "come on, man, we're leaving."
"can i come too?" belly asked.
"uh, no." steven said. "the moms are getting everything set up for you."
"see ya." conrad said to belly, then got up. "let's go, slowpoke."
"have fun with the moms!" steven teased, causing me to hit his arm. "ow!"
ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚ ੈ✩‧₊˚
the bonfire was pretty boring, it was like every other party, one or more guys hitting on me, to which i turn them down, and everyone drinking. i always try not to get too drunk, i get a cup or two.
i turned to conrad and saw him making out with his new girlfriend, nicole. she seemed nice, i talked to her a few times.
all of a sudden though, i turned around to see belly on the ground, in the sand. and steven was right next to her.
"belly?" i asked, confused.
"i thought you hated the red sox." belly crossed her arms at conrad.
oh god belly, don't do this.
"who are you?" nicole asked, politely, but also confused, i don't blame her.
"who are you?" belly shot back, rudely.
"nicole. conrad and i went to the deb ball together last summer."
"it was after you guys left to take steven to look at colleges." conrad added.
she's pissed. i know it.
"i thought you said deb balls are bullshit, and all debs are sheep." belly glared at him.
"i didn't-" conrad stuttered, then scoffed. "you're such a brat."
i know this looked bad, but he wasn't always like this. he could be really sweet to belly, like all the time. but i guess this summer was different.
"well, you're an asshole!" belly almost yelled at him.
"belly!" jeremiah ran up to her with a grin. "you came!"
i decided since her and conrad we're done with their small argument, i'd walk up to her too.
"belly!" i hugged her. "what are you doing here?"
"taylor told me i should come." she moved some hair from her face.
"of course she did." i laughed a little.
"i'm about to take her home." steven told me, and jeremiah.
"what?" jeremiah asked, his mood shifting.
"yeah, we're leaving, are you kidding me?" steven grabbed belly's arm.
"okay, steven, chill out." i took his arm away from belly. "she's fifteen, almost sixteen. i think she's old enough to at least be here."
"come on, go hang out with shayla or something." jeremiah told steven.
"let's go." shayla gave steven a look.
"fine.." he looked at belly. "just stay here, and don't talk to anybody."
"oh my god, go away steven." i lightly shoved him away.
"fuck you!" belly yelled as steven walked away, with both middle fingers.
"wow!" jeremiah laughed. "for one, i'm really happy you're here."
"jeremiah!" a girl called.
"okay, i will be right back."
something was telling me that he wasn't coming back though. belly crossed her arms and i wrapped an arm around her, both of us going to sit down.
"flavia?" a guy walked up to us. "hi, it's me, sextus!"
what kind of name is that?
"what did you say to me?' belly asked in offense.
"no, no, no. sextus. from the seventh grade latin convention."
oh.
the boy sat down next to belly, they seemed to be hitting it off pretty well, which caused me to feel like a third wheel.
"yeah, i'm gonna get up and do.. anything else away from here." i bluntly said and got up to leave them alone, it was getting pretty cold, and i wanted to go home.
i go to a corner by myself and get another drink, watching as everyone had a good time, but me, being tired, and bored.
i looked over at conrad, making out with nicole. i had no idea when that happened, he never mentioned anything about that, but then, also, what do i really know about conrad now?
belly was still talking to cam, steven with shayla, and jeremiah with those girls.
i get my phone from my pocket, and call taylor.
she picked up the phone instantly. "hey, what's up? aren't you still at that bonfire?" she asked.
"it's boring." i told her. "all people are doing is drinking and making out. but belly's talking to a guy here. i don't know his name."
"oh?" she smirked. "she told us this summer would be different."
"yeah, she did."
i look up and hear arguing, i see jumper and conrad shoving each other, nicole trying to stop conrad.
"what's going on?" taylor asked, still on the call.
"conrad's probably gonna get into a fight. he's arguing with this guy and they're shoving each other i guess." i responded, looking at them pushing each other.
"you gonna stop him?" she asked.
"it's not my business." i took another sip of my drink, just wanting to leave.
belly ran up to the two, but got elbowed in the face and fell to the floor, which caused me to roll my eyes and sigh. "taylor, i'll call you back."
i go up to belly and the guy she was talking to helps her up, right after the cops came, and the sirens were loud, giving me a headache.
"cops!" someone yelled.
me, belly, and that boy ran to the car, i really wasn't looking forward to getting in trouble with the police.
jeremiah and conrad were right behind us, jeremiah supporting conrad, helping him into the backseat.
"get in the car." jeremiah ordered. "watch your head. legs, legs."
"yes, i know how to get into a car." conrad sassed.
"belly, let's go, get in." jeremiah told her, as i also got into the backseat.
"cam can give me a ride home." belly softly said, then looked at cam. "right, cam?"
"yes, that's no problem." cam said.
"no, you're not getting in the car with a guy you just met." jeremiah defended.
cam stuck out his hand for jeremiah to shake. "i'm cam! cameron."
"your name is cam cameron?" jeremiah sassed him.
"just cam." cam chuckled. "but we actually, we know each other. seventh grade latin convention. so, like, we're not total strangers."
jeremiah scoffed. "okay, no offense, but no. belly get in the car."
"just get in the car." conrad added in from the backseat.
i wanted to say yes to her going, but i didn't want any problems or a headache from conrad and jeremiah disagreeing with me.
belly talked to cam for a little bit, gave him a quick peck, and got into the car. i was proud.
we started driving off, but a few seconds later, jeremiah stopped the car. "fuck! steven!"
steven.. i forgot about him too. "uh, i'll go with you." belly offered.
"okay." jeremiah looked at me. "watch conrad. i'll be right back." i nodded my head.
i looked out the window, trying to mind my own business. i felt conrad lightly touch my hair, stroking my hair.
i wanted to tell him to stop, that he shouldn't be doing this. "your hair's like a little kids. the way it's always so messy."
i didn't know what to say. what was he doing?
suddenly, snapping me out of my trance, we hear a knock on the window, conrad lets go of my hair.
"you kids been drinking?" a cop asks.

part 3 part 1
THE CAR SLOWLY PULLED UP into the driveway of susannah's beach house, with laurel honking the horn.
"they're here!" susannah yelled.
the door quickly opened. "what's up!" jeremiah asked in an enthusiastic voice.
steven went up to hug jeremiah first, while laurel went to susannah.
me and belly got out the car, when jeremiah and steven stopped hugging, jeremiah turned to belly. "hi!" belly giggled.
"look who came back all grown up!" jeremiah joked, hugging belly and lifting her up.
"jere! come over here." steven motioned for jeremiah.
finally, conrad came outside, in a hoodie, walking up to us.
he went to belly first, talking to her in awe. then he turned to me. i smiled a little, as he walked over to me.
"hey." i lightly smiled. he smiled too, and ruffled my hair.
susannah came up to me with a huge grin, and engulfed me in a big hug. "oh, my gorgeous girl."
"hey, guys!" steven called. "i-i don't know about you.. but i think it's time for.."
jeremiah looked at his invisible watch, at the same time, him and steven said. "a belly flop!"
belly tried running away, but the three of them stopped her. conrad grabbing her arms, and steven and jeremiah grabbing her legs.
"3.. 2... 1.." they swung her back and forth, then launched her into the water.
"how's the water!?" jeremiah teased, once belly came back up from underwater.
"guys.. i hurt my ankle!" belly whined in the water, reaching out her hand.
conrad took her hand, but instead of getting up, belly yanked him into the water with her, he grabbed onto her ankle.
"let go." belly told him, to which he splashed her with water.

once night came, i got out of my room and went downstairs for dinner.
when i was younger, i used to share a room with belly, because we were the girls. but as we got older, we both got our own room.
steven and jeremiah were looking at steven's phone, laughing at something.
"steven, i swear to god, if you look at that phone one more time, i'm putting it in the screen basket." laurel threatened.
"it's just, we wanna see your beautiful faces." susannah smiled. "can dinner be a screen-free zone. you know? like the old times."
steven, took another glance at his phone. "steven." jeremiah spoke, he grabbed steven's phone, got up, and tossed it in the basket.
"dude, are you kidding me?" steven got a little frustrated.
"boom! nailed it!" jeremiah said in victory.
"okay, okay, okay. we get it." steven said. "you've been working out."
"you're just jealous because jere has a better body than you." belly teased steven.
"uh, no, actually it's all about the lean look now." steven defended. "or else you can't wear tailored suits."
i rolled my eyes and shot a glance to laurel, to which she shot a glance back, us silently making fun of them.
"tailored suits." conrad mocked.
steven laughed, then looked at conrad. "when do you leave for training camp, man?"
conrad went silent for a bit, before speaking up. "uh.. i quit."
well, the truth was out.
FLASBACK
his call came, in the middle of february. i heard my ringer going off, and i quickly picked up the phone to answer.
"hey, conrad, why are you calling?" i asked with a small smile on my face.
"can i.. can i talk to you about something?" he asked, sounding down."
"yeah.. sure, what's up?" i looked down at my shoes.
"i quit football." he blurted out.
"why? i thought you loved it." i asked in concern.
he didn't answer, so i started talking again. "do you at least have a plan? what you're gonna do now?"
"i don't know yet." he responded, his voice shaky a little. "i don't know what i wanna do. i just want you to talk to me and be there for me. can you do that?"
i felt bad, i really did, seeing him so vulnerable. "yeah." i sighed. "yeah, i can."
END OF FLASHBACK
"wait, really, you quit?" steven asked in surprise.
"mhm."
"are you kidding me, man? i'd kill to play college ball." steven continued.
"he can always change his mind." susannah spoke up.
"i'm not gonna change my mind." conrad shut her down. "i was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyway."
"well, if you're not gonna play football, then.. what are you gonna do all summer?" laurel asked him.
"oh, dude, you could work at the country club! with me, jere, and y/n." steven suggested.
"i'm not gonna work at the club." conrad shut that idea down.
"wait, you guys are working this summer?" belly asked us.
"uh, yeah! me and y/n are working lifeguard, and steven's working at the snack shack." jeremiah said as him and steven did a fist bump.
"oh, belly, y/n, i almost forgot." susannah got something out. "i got something for you both."
"so this why you had to stop at the country club?" laurel smiled at susannah.
"what.. what is that?" steven curiously asked me and belly as we both opened an envelope.
"i got belly and y/n an invitation to be a debutante." susannah proudly announced.
"isn't that the thing where girls wear white dresses and curtesy?" i asked, furrowing my brows.
"when a girl comes of age, and is presented to society." susannah explained.
"why didn't you just give me this when i was fifteen?" i asked, in a little confusion.
"i figured you wouldn't really wanna go alone." susannah told me.
"well, you're right."
"i know it sounds silly, but it's really fun. girls come from over england to cousins to be apart of this." susannah tried to persuade us. "you'll make so many new friends."
"i cannot believe you're still hanging onto this dream." laurel got up.
"no, it used to be all about finding a husband, but now it's about networking. they teach you leadership skills, how to market yourself, and a charity event. it's like a bar mitzvah." susannah explained.
laurel laughed, coming back with wine. "it is not like a bar mitzvah. there's nothing religious about a debutante ball."
"the whole deb scene is bullshit. it's for sheep." conrad spoke up from his chair.
"yeah." steven agreed.
"no, it's not. it's when a girl has a coming out. it's a formal recognition she's reached maturity." susannah explained to them.
steven and jeremiah started laughing. "belly, mature?" steven asked.
"y/n, mature?" jeremiah asked.
"belly, a couple months ago, you had a cat funeral, you made us wear black." steven laughed.
"shut up, steven!" i defended belly. "i saw you crying in your room."
this is how it's been since we were little. belly was the youngest, so i always felt a little protective over her, i tried to include her in as much as possible.
conrad did a good job with that too, but i always felt bad she spent time with the moms while the boys left her out of things.
"wait, mochi died?" jeremiah asked. "dang, i'm sorry, bells."
"come on, girls. don't you wanna get all dressed up?" susannah smirked at us.
"well, i'd really like that." i smiled at her.
"it's just not belly's sort of thing. she's our feral little ally cat." laurel played with belly's hair.
steven and jeremiah started to laugh again, taking a sip of their drink.
"i'll do it if belly does it." i decided, then me and susannah turned to belly.
"i'll think about it." is all belly said.
susannah lifted up her wine. "she'll think about it."

you are adopted in this! y/n's parents were close with the fishers and conklins but died in a car accident, so laurel adopts y/n
part 2
i. the drive
ME AND MY FAMILY have been coming to cousins since i was a baby, since before i was born.
the tradition was, me and my mom would go to the summer beach house in cousins, along with my moms friends, laurel park and susannah fisher, and laurel's daughter and son, and susannah's two sons.
the beach house felt magical, every summer, i couldn't wait to return each summer.
most of the time, me and belly would tag along with the moms, mostly just my mom.
my mom would take us shopping a lot, and get us frozen yogurt after, then we'd go swimming.
laurel and susannah didn't really like to swim with us. that's what made my mom so special. until both of my parents died. when i was seven. in a car crash.
my parents were my whole world. i miss them everyday.
after that happened, i had to move from north carolina to pennsylvania with the conklin's.
from what i remember, i was pretty shut down for the next two years, and sad all the time, but eventually i got better.
laurel had taken me in with her, john, steven, and belly, and i had my last name changed to l/n-conklin.
i had found hobbies to cope with my parents death. in sixth grade, i had taken up soccer. in eighth grade, i started volleyball. now, as a junior, i was on my schools soccer and volleyball team.
i was pretty smart too, academically. with my grades averaging with a's and b's since freshman year. i wanted to go to college, my dream school was university of southern california, usc.
today though, was the day i returned to cousins for the summer, of course, i was excited. i was in belly's room, packing, with taylor jewel, me and belly were both close friends with her.
"drew's bummed you're missing the beach match with the boys team next weekend." taylor told belly, laying down on the bed, on her phone.
belly turned around. "uh, make sure tell sophie to square up for the block." belly tells taylor, ignoring what she said.
"drew martinez is texting me about you, and you're talking about volleyball?" taylor said with a surprised expression.
"drew doesn't care if i'm there or not, he wants an excuse to text you." belly denied, not really acknowledging the fact that she had a glow up basically. "and you better take this game seriously, i mean, team pride is on the line, taylor."
"please, you know me better than that." taylor looked up. "i would never let a boy beat me at anything."
belly and i laughed. "i thought you came here to help us pack." belly smiled.
"fine.." taylor got up. "i'll help. here's a tip, don't bring that speedo. it doesn't do a thing for your new boobs." taylor said with a a laugh, sitting on belly's bed, flipping through a magazine.
"it's not a speedo." belly defended with a frown looking down at the swimsuit.
"yes it is." i intervene, looking at my phone.
"we're just saying babes, like you need to pack cute things." taylor says flipping a page in the magazine she's reading.
"well, i always buy a new suit when i get there." belly tells us with a smile.
"okay, well, buy one that doesn't look like you're trying out for the swim team." i pressed.
"are you serious y/n?" belly giggled, flopping onto the bed and launching herself onto me.
"girls! were leaving in the next 10 minutes!" laurel shouted from downstairs.
"we got to go." belly said with a frown.
"no, we don't, we still have 10 minutes!" i told the two of them with a smirk.
we started laughing again, but once it stopped, we sat on the bed, belly on the floor, taylor switching to a more serious tone.
"okay, before i let you both go you both have to tell me your summer wishes. like the one thing that you guys want to happen this summer."
"i don't know." belly took a deep sigh.
"you little liar, yes you do." taylor giggled at belly.
"you want a hot make out sesh with conrad fisher, you want his tongue in your mouth, you dirty little slut!" taylor joked.
i shifted uncomfortably, trying to plaster a laugh. "taylor! ew."
"i'm just saying, i mean, you've been in love with him since we were twelve." taylor reminded her as belly got up.
"it doesn't matter what i do, he doesn't see me that way." belly frowned.
"oh, he'll see you." i looked at belly up and down. "whether he wants to or not. you look a lot different than last summer, belly."
taylor laughed, then turned to me. "what about you, y/n?"
i looked away. "what about me?"
"your summer wish." taylor reminded me.
"i don't know yet." i sighed. "i guess go to a lot of parties, and make more friends."
"no boyfriend? no fling?" taylor asked, a little confused. "come on y/n, a whole summer on the beach? no nothing?"
"oh wow, big deal, a seventeen year old that doesn't care about a boyfriend." i sighed again. "i guess i've never really been that interested in getting a boyfriend." i shrugged. "i have other priorities."
i did. i applied for a job as a lifeguard at the country club, to get some money for college. i wanted to apply to ucla, it was my dream school.
i always try to keep myself busy, keep myself doing something productive, and i think the job would help.
"girls, we're leaving now!"

during the drive, belly got shotgun, steven was driving, and i sat in the backseat with mom, which i didn't really mind.
the song 'can't do better' by kim petras was blasting, while belly sung along from the top of her lungs.
i unbuckled my seatbelt and spread my legs across the backseat.
"uh, can you guys turn it down a little?" laurel asked. "and, y/n, sit right."
i sighed and sat straight, buckling my seatbelt. "i want you guys to be better about helping out this summer." laurel told us.
"don't just leave your dishes, load them into the dishwasher. and, not just your dish either, steven. i want you to be good houseguests." she continued.
"mom, susannah has people who clean, doesn't she?" steven asked, curiously.
laurel flicked steven on the head. "steven!"
"owww!" steven complained. "alright, alright. sorry."
mom is weird about money, the fact that susannah has money, and we don't.
"just.. be considerate, and act like i raised you right. steven, y/n, that means don't stay out too late."
"mommmm!" we both complained.
"i'm too old for a curfew." i frowned.
"wait, what about me? i don't have a curfew either, right?" belly asked from the front seat.
steven started to laugh. "what do you need a curfew for? you don't go anywhere."
"steven!" i threw my phone charger at him. "don't be a jackass."
"what?" steven continued laughing.
"we'll talk about it when it comes up." laurel told belly.
"oh, and y/n, don't forget, you promised you'd take me driving." belly reminded me.
"belly, i told you i'd take you." laurel intervened.
"yeah, but.. you're too judgy." belly quietly said.
me and steven started laughing. "excuse me?" laurel asked.
"yeah, sorry." belly laughed too.
we parked in front of the gas station me, belly, and mom going in.
belly got some cheetos and sour patches. she opened the bag of cheetos and ate a few.
"belly!" i whisper-yelled.
"what!?"
"at least pay for it first."
me and belly looked over at the register, to see a guy staring at us.
"hey." he nodded his head.
i smiled and waved, while belly grabbed a coke, and we brought our snacks up to the register.
"what's up with you, y/n?" jumper said with a smile.
"jumper? i didn't know you work here now." i said in surprise.
he turned to belly. "who's this? are you new this summer?"
belly looked behind her, then back at jumper. "uh, me? no.."
"really?" he smirked, and scanned the snacks. "thought i knew every pretty girl in cousins."
"ew, don't flirt with my little sister, idiot." i warned him.
to be honest, i wasn't really fond with jumper. the way he sort of treated girls like they were objects just wasn't too appealing to me.
he rolled his eyes. "whatever. you both coming to the bonfire tonight? first of the season."
"uh.. maybe." i responded.
"come!" he encouraged us, then turned to belly again with a smile. "i'll introduce you to some of my friends."
"maybe i will." belly smiled back
i gave belly a quick side eye. "maybe she won't." i look back to jumper, trying to protect belly.
laurel walked up to us. "after i get settled in, you wanna go to whale of a tale with me, so i can presign stock for the signing tonight?" she asked belly.
"uh..."
"remember.. when you used to sit on my lap when i used to sign there?" laurel continued
"no, i don't.. remember that." belly chuckled.
"i'll make you a deal." laurel said, as we walked out. "i'll let you pick out tonight's desert if you come in and keep me company."
"see you later." jumped smirked at belly.
"what's later?" laurel asked, curiously.
"nothing." belly responded, a little too quickly.
