“You can give your resignation today when you post that picture on Instagram, tell ‘em you’re done and you wanna take photos of pregnant ladies all day,” you joked back, now laying back on the bed because carrying a baby in your stomach all day was tiring.

Braden’s head whipped back at you, “You mean… I can actually post it? Let everyone know now?” He was like a big ol’ kid who could finally let out a secret.

“Yes, Braden, you can. Besides, they’re gonna start suspecting something when I come to the games. I’d rather them know I’m pregnant than think I’m sneaking snacks into the arena.”

this night was one of those nights.

you and braden were in your dorm. you both were in the small bathroom. you were going through your face mask collection while braden picked a movie.

"all right, you can't complain about what i pick then." you laughed, finally settling on a facemask.

braden sat on the counter as he painted the mask on his face like you always did. he winced at the cold cool gel when it hit his face, but didn't say anything.

when you finished he went back to the starting up the movie as you got your face mask on. you heard the movie starts right as you finished your mask.

braden came up behind you and began playing with your hair, "what are you doing?"

"i learned to braid hair," he admitted shyly.

“Hey Y/N!” Kirby said, as you entered the locker room where you, and 46 boys were dressing for the start of selection camp.

”Hey Dacher!” You said, walking over to your stall, putting down your backpack, and pulling out your phone to text your family.

’About to go in for the first day of selection camp! Love you guys!’ Was the text you typed out to the groupchat you had made with your best friends and family before hitting the send button and putting your phone away.

“Alrighty guys, are you already?” Andre said, adjusting his mask.

A mix of “Yeah!” and “Yes!” were thrown around the room.

After getting out on the ice, selection camp in Red Deer began.

“Hey, you’re doing great out there!” Kaiden said, skating up to you and tapping his stick on your kneepad.

“Thanks Kaiden! Not to bad yourself!” You said, touching his helmet as he went back to skating and stickhandling.

“Soooo what's that about?” Jamie asked, when you turned toward the other end of the ice, not realizing he was standing there.

“Holy shit Jamie! What are you doing here?” You asked, eyes wide.

“Uhh I’m at selection camp... why wouldn’t I be? But you and Kaiden like each other. Just admit it.” Jamie asked, giggling and wrapping his arm around your shoulder, pulling you into his side.

“What? No!” You said, skating away from him and hearing Jamie laugh so hard you were sure he had tears coming out of his eyes.

Anyways, you couldn’t really decide if it selection camp was easy or not. You couldn’t feel your legs, and it seemed like nobody else could either. Andre and the assistant coaches made all of the players stick handle, timed skates to the far blue line and back, and a few of the players helped the goalies by shooting slap shots at them and acted like you were in a shoot out.

NOVEMBER 21, 2020

You were just about to leave your room to go to the locker room for the first intersquad game when you heard your phone ringing. You looked over and saw that Andre was calling you.

“Hello?” You asked, picking up your backpack from the floor, sitting down on the hotel bed.

“Y/N? We just found out that a non-core staff member tested positive for covid and they had come in contact with assistant coaches, Michael Dyck and Jason Labarbera so they are quarantining. We don’t have to cancel the intersquad games so far, though. Just a heads up and wanted to let you know.” Andre said.

“Oh I hope they’re okay! Thank you for letting me know!” You said.

“Yep, no problem. See you in a few minutes.” Andre said, hanging up.

You put your phone in your back pocket and sighed. This was the type of stuff you would have to deal with.. and really what anyone in the bubble would have to deal with. You put your mask on and opened your hotel room door, and headed to the locker room of the area you and 46 other guys were playing at.

“Y/N! Y/N!” Kirby called, passing the puck to you. ‘Shoot the puck. Shoot the puck.’ was all that you were thinking while skating as fast as you can down the ice. You shot it, and it went in, past the goalie that would possibly be on the final roster along with you, and a bunch of other guys. “Yeah!” Kirby said, hugging you and laughing while your other linemates tapped each others helmets. You gave your bench high fives and sat down on the bench as the puck dropped again. “Nice job.” Jamie said, tapping your helmet as you sat down next to him. “Thanks!” You said.

A few minutes later, when the period ended, you stood up from your seat on the bench when you heard someone calling your name. You turn and see Kaiden.

“Hey Y/N! That was a sick goal!” Kaiden said, smiling down at you.

You laughed. “Thank you Kaiden!”

“Yeah well I better score one or else I can’t be here with you on the final roster.” Kaiden said, laughing.

“What? What if I’m not on the final roster? Why so sure of yourself, Guhle?” You asked.

“Y/N, you’re an amazing player. Why wouldn’t you be on the final roster?” Kaiden said, looking at you.

“T-thanks. You’re an amazing player too.” You said, heart starting to beat faster.

“Well Jamie is probably going to come looking for us if you don’t go.” Kaiden said, smiling at you.

“Y/N?” Andre said through the phone, with his voice sounding a bit stressed and frantic.

“Hey! What’s up?” You ask, putting your stick tape in your bag, getting ready to head down to the locker room for the last intersquad game.

Some time had pasted and December finally had come. Well, you shouldn’t be that excited about it. It meant cuts and the final cuts to the roster were coming. Kaiden and a bunch of other people were very reassuring when it came to your worries about being cut.

Coach Andre made an announcement via email stating that the first cuts had been made. The players were, Matthew Robertson, Mason Millman, Xavier Simoneau, Daemon Hunt, and Ridly Greig, leaving you and 41 other players in camp.

When you read the email, and didn’t see your name, you felt like a weight was lifted off your shoulders... but, you still had 3 more days till the final cuts were made from the roster.

DECEMBER 10, 2020

That day, seven more players were cut from camp. The players being goalies Brett Brochu and Tristan Lennox, and forwards Adam Beckman, Tyson Foerster, Hendrix Lapierre, Cole Schwindt, and Shane Wright, leaving you and 34 other players in camp.

‘One more day.’ Was what you were telling yourself, trying to ease the anxiety of being cut.

“You aren’t going to get cut, Y/N/N. I know your not.” Kirby reassured you through facetime.

“We’ll see Kirby, we will see.”

DECEMBER 11, 2020 (FINAL CUTS TO THE ROSTER)

You heard a knock at your hotel door, quickly getting up from your bed, and tossing on a hoodie. When you opened the door, you saw a few staff members and one seemed to be holding a phone.

“Hey Y/N! We have a few people who want to talk to you!” The staff member said, making you put on a confused face before them handing you the phone. You saw your mom, dad, and brother gathered all around the screen.

“Hey sweetie!” Your mom said.

“Hi guys!” You said, looking down at the phone, seeing a bunch of smiley parents and brother.

“Congratulations, honey! You made it onto the final roster for Team Canada!” Your dad said, your mouth immediately dropping and looking at the camera crew and staff members, wiping tears that came down your face from being so happy.

“Really? I really did it?” You asked, jumping up and down.

“This is not a reaction we’ve gotten before.” One of the staff members mumbled to the other, slightly chuckling.

After saying goodbye to your mom, dad, brother, and staff members, you went back into your hotel room and immediately check your email, making sure you, Kirby, Kaiden, Jamie, or Braden weren’t cut from the roster as they were the people you were closest to.

“We’ve made the final cuts to the roster. Team Canada is releasing forwards Mavrick Bourque, Graeme Clarke, Gage Goncalves, Seth Jarvis, Samuel Poulin, and Jamieson Rees and defensemen Lukas Cormier, Ryan O’Rourke, and Donovan Sebrango. Thank you.” You mumbled out, not seeing any of your friends names, smiling even wider. You then texted Kaiden to congradulate him.

This week, the Eastern Edge will take a closer look at the goaltending in the Eastern Conference. Just looking at the numbers between East versus West and it is much more preferable to own a Western Conference goaltender if your league counts goals-against averages and save percentages.

All the statistics that follow are prior to games played on Sunday. The top 12 Eastern Conference goaltenders average 18.6 wins per goaltender, while the Western Conference averages 18.2. Not really a big difference, but let’s look at goals-against average. The top 12 in the West average 2.30, while the East lags behind with a 2.48 goals-against average. When it comes to save percentage, the West holds a 0.926 to 0.922 advantage.

Boston – Outside of Andrei Vasilevskiy, there is no other Eastern Conference goaltender that I’d rather own right now than Tuukka Rask. Rask has the third ranked goals-against average in the NHL. Anton Khudobin has been a nice play if you have been lucky enough to play him on his starts. He has the tenth best goals-against average and save percentage in the NHL amongst qualified players.

Buffalo – Much more was expected from Robin Lehner and the Sabres. Lehner’s poor numbers are more a reflection of the team, but a 0.907 save percentage isn’t going to help win many games.

Carolina – I was not as high on Scott Darling as some were heading into the season. Cam Ward has put up better numbers in eight less games, but it’s all relative when we’re talking about a 2.75 goals-against average and 0.907 save percentage being the better of the two. It will be interesting to see if the Hurricanes attempt to re-sign the pending unrestricted free agent Ward in the off-season.

Columbus –I had high hopes for Sergei Bobrovsky and the Blue Jackets. They have both delivered decent results, but there is still room to improve for the number 10 Yahoo ranked goaltender.

Detroit – Many thought Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek would evenly split the starts this season. That all went out the window with the way Howard started the season. His record in October was only 5-4-0 with a goals-against average of 2.57, but his save percentage was a sweet 0.927. Howard faltered a little in November and December, but Mrazek was unable to wrest the starting job completely away from Howard.

Florida – I think most of us thought that James Reimer would take over the number one role from the 63-year-old Roberto Luongo this season. For the most part that has happened, but may not have happened by now if the Panthers resident senior citizen hadn’t found his way onto the injured reserve list. Luongo had a very hot run starting from November 7th going 5-3-0 with a 2.01 goals-against average and 0.943 save percentage until suffering a groin injury on December 4th.

Reimer had a brutal start to his season, sporting a 4-6-1 record with a 3.73 goals-against average and 0.889 save percentage. In December, he was much better, going 7-3-3 with a 2.35 goals-against average and 0.932 save percentage. His January has not been very good, a 2-3-1 record with a 3.37 goals-against average and 0.898 save percentage. It will be interesting to see if Bobby Lou can return to form and take back the number one job.

Montreal – Obviously for Carey Price owners (this guy included), it’s been a disappointing season to say the least. We expected at least a top-five goaltender, but he’s now the 51st ranked goaltender. That hurts, but fantasy owners and Habs fans can hope that over the final 35 games, Price can deliver a top-10 performance.

New Jersey – Expectations were low for both the Devils and Cory Schneider at the start of the season. While New Jersey has exceeded expectations, Schneider has a not so great goals-against average of 2.74 and a pedestrian save percentage of 0.915.

New York Islanders – Heading into the season, the Isles goaltending looked to be their biggest question mark. That has proven to be true. Jaroslav Halak has underperformed all season with a 3.24 goals-against average and 0.906 save percentage. The team is one point out of a wild card spot. Imagine where they would be with average goaltending.

New York Rangers – Henrik Lundqvist has been better than expected. His goals-against average is a mediocre 2.54, but his 0.924 save percentage is tied for fourth best in the East. Long live the King.

Ottawa – Many thought that this team would be in the mix for a playoff spot, but they haven’t played very well. It’s not all on Craig Anderson, but in the games I’ve watched, he hasn’t looked very good. The Sens are 24th in goals scored per game and third last in goals against. That’s not nearly good enough to challenge for a playoff position.

Philadelphia – Not many people thought very highly of the Flyers goaltending tandem heading into the season. The team has scored 2.91goals per game (14th in the NHL) while allowing 2.79 goals against (13th best) per contest. Backup Michal Neuvirth leads the Eastern Conference in save percentage with a sweet 0.928, although he’s only played in 13 games. Starter Brian Elliott has less than stellar numbers, a 2.84 goals-against average and a 0.906 save percentage, but sports a 17-11-7 record.

Pittsburgh – Such high hopes for Matt Murray, so many disappointed fantasy owners. A 15-12-1 record isn’t so bad, but his 2.93 goals-against average and 0.903 save percentage is abysmal. Murray was the number three ranked goaltender in Yahoo heading into the season. He currently sits at number 54 in the rankings. Tristan Jarry has been better in the games he has played with a 2.44 goals-against average and 0.919 save percentage. I still expect Murray to have a very good second half when he returns to action.

Tampa Bay – I had Andrei Vasilevskiy ranked higher than Yahoo’s 16th best. Currently, the top fantasy goaltender in the NHL with a 27-9-2 record, a 2.27 goals-against average and 0.927 save percentage. It doesn’t hurt that the Lightning have been the top team in their Conference this year. The injury to Victor Hedman might have contributed to the numbers Vasilevskiy has recorded in January; a 2-4-1 record, 3.41 goals-against average and sub-par 0.891 save percentage. This stretch should be just a short-term blip on what is a breakout campaign for the 23-year-old Russian.

Toronto – After a poor opening month (6-5-0, 3.46, 0.896), Frederik Andersen logged an excellent November (9-2-1, 2.14, 0.938). December and January have been very average with a combined 8-6-3 record, 2.57 goals-against average and nice 0.923 save percentage. The Maple Leafs playoff hopes will hinge on how well this team can defend in its own end.

Washington – Owners of Brayden Holtby have to be mildly disappointed. Sure, he owns a 24-9-1 record, but that 2.70 goals-against average and 0.916 save percentage are far off last season’s 2.07 and 0.925. Look for a nice second half from the Caps and Holtby.

"Stop the lovey dovey crap we get that you're in love." Dylan said as he skated around the lunch table.

"And this is where Bowen says I think it's cute." Jamie said.

"I was gonna say that." Bowen rolled his eyes and bumped Jamie's shoulder.

"You guys are so weird." You said as you let shook your head at their antics.

"Y/N remember when you used to sit over there." Dylan said. "That table is still open if you want to escape us now." Dylan added to his previous sentence.

"Honestly i'm not sure why it took you guys so long to get together, it was literally like oh y/n i love you so much but im scared to tell you so im just gonna draw you." Kirby said.

"And then y/n would look over and be like oh Braden i'm just gonna throw longing glares at you and hope you notice i feel the same way." Dylan added fluttering his eyelashes for effect.

"It was not like that. You guys exaggerate." You said.

"No yeah it was exactly like that." Bowen said.

"See and Bowen never lies." Jamie said.

You looked over at your boyfriend who had his sketchbook open, sketching away from you.

"Oh can i see what you are drawing." You said as you scooted closer to him.

"If I showed you it wouldn't be a surprise." He said.

Him handing it to you once he was finished with it. All of the guys crowding around you to see the newest creation their friend had made.

"You know Braden if you sold these you could get a lot of money." Coz said.

"I'm not gonna sell a portrait to my girlfriend." He rolled his eyes at Dylan.

"No, I mean to other people."

"So you're saying if i sold one to you you'd buy it?" Braden raised his eyebrow at his friend.

"Well i mean no since i am your friend and i can just ask you nicely."

"Yeah sure." Braden said as all of you guys just laughed at how fast Dylan's idea fell and continued to enjoy each other's company before the school bell rang.
