Total Recall (2012)
In today's review, I live out my dreams of rebellion, deep inside the Earth's core. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2012 remake of the sci-fi classic Total Recall #ColinFarrell #KateBeckinsale #JessicaBiel #BryanCranston #BokeemWoodbine #BillNighy
The art of a good remake is a complicated business; you want the best elements to shine forth in the new medium or at least comment without repeating the previous work verbatim. In the 90s, Paul Verhoeven adapted Philip K. Dick’s novel to great acclaim. In 2012, It was the Verhoeven classic that was remade again, and undertook some significant alterations to tell the tale in its way, like a dream…

Spenser Confidential (2020)
Tumblr media
Nothing about Spenser Confidential makes it stand out so fittingly, you can watch it at home for the price of a monthly subscription. If what you want is a standard action-comedy, here’s another one. At least the price is right.
After serving five years in prison for assaulting a corrupt police captain, former Boston police detective Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) wants to move away from his former coworkers and leave everything behind, including his ex-girlfriend, Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger). When Captain John Boylan (Michael Gaston) is viciously executed and another officer is blamed for the crime, Spenser doesn’t buy it. With the help of his roommate Hawk (Winston Duke) and old friend Henry Cimoli (Alan Arkin), he decides to dig into the case everyone else is a little too eager to call closed.
Aside from a reference to fake news, nothing about Spenser Confidential indicates it was made this year. There’s corruption in the police force but it’s tied to drugs and mob families, that sort of deal. There’s nothing heavy or topical like racism anywhere to be found. It’s a light movie with gags about dogs, randy exes, and Spenser getting repeatedly beaten up but always getting a little closer to the truth in the process. To its credit, the villains are sufficiently despicable for you to want to see things all the way through. Even the bad jokes won't deter you from checking the cast of colourful characters (which include James DuMont as "Tracksuit Charlie" and Spenser old, slightly too friendly ex-partner played by Bokeem Woodbine and a smattering of "bad apples") because you know violent justice will be dispensed soon. Nothing’s particularly intolerable. You just wish this was funnier or that the action scenes tried something new, or that the mystery was less easy to solve. You’ve seen this kind of movie so many times you can figure out all but the minutest of details easily. You can even predict what songs will play during the climax based on the names of people or vehicles.
While Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, and Iliza Shlesinger play off each other well, the sequel teased at the end fails to raise any excitement. Another Spenser movie would be more of the same and this is already more of what we’ve seen before. It goes through the motions in a perfectly capable manner, which actually makes it more uninteresting and unremarkable than bad. (September 27, 2020)

Review : Queen & Slim (2019)
Tumblr media
There has not been a definitive answer as to whether life imitates art, or vice-versa.  What is completely certain, however, is that the two are tied together, and often inform one another.  Police brutality and race relations have been on the minds of the populous for ages, but as technology has forced the documentation of minority and police interactions to the point that people are forced to recognize how often they go wrong, it was only a matter of time before this echoed in film.  Therefore, it was no surprise that a film like Queen & Slim would find its way to theaters, and just like there are many people in this world, there have been many reactions to this film.
Angela Johnson (Jodie Turner-Smith) meets Ernest Hines (Daniel Kaluuya) for a Tinder date after losing a capital punishment case, which puts her on her defenses and in a foul mood.  Despite Ernest’s best efforts during the date, Angela does not outwardly show interest, although she does mildly flirt with him by taking his phone while he drives.  Ernest attempts to take his phone back from Angela, which causes his car to swerve.  Officer Reed (Sturgill Simpson), a patrolman, notices the swerve and pulls Ernest over, but Officer Reed’s overly-cautious manner and lack of empathy quickly escalates the situation.  After taking Ernest’s request to hurry up the wrong way, Officer Reed pulls his gun and commands Ernest to get on the ground.  Angela confronts Officer Reed, and in a fit of confusion, Angela is shot in the leg.  Ernest and Officer Reed wrestle in response, and Officer Reed ends up being killed by Ernest as a result.  Fearful, Angela convinces Ernest to run, leading to a cat and mouse game between Anglea, Ernest and the authorities as the couple tries to evade capture, all the while unknowingly becoming social media icons with major influence.
As a Bonnie & Clyde tale, the movie is suitable.  The tension is present in the situation the duo is facing, but a lot of the actual, tangible tension is moral, as the viewer is forced to deal with the reality of the couple’s situation versus the glorified perception of those that run into them.  As the romance blossoms between the two, the world around them is thrown into upheaval, with most every life that they touch being left in a worse state than before they entered, be it the inconvenience they put on the Shepherd family, or the tragic loss of Junior due to his misunderstanding of Ernest and Angela’s feelings about their actions.  Watching the world close in on the couple, and seeing how that pressure crystallized into a deep love over the course of six days, works well in this picture, specifically because the noise and the opinions of those not directly connected are merely sprinkled through the film, rather than held up in direct comparison to Ernest and Angela’s emotional journey.  Ultimately, much like Bonnie & Clyde, we are given an examination on how the real world often butts up against the fragile worlds that we build to protect ourselves, our feelings and our minds.  Ernest and his pragmatic, simple approach to love, and the way it wins over Angela’s dynamic needs during their turmoil, is the strongest element of the film in my opinion.
The tangible, tough to mull over portions of this film lie DIRECTLY in its opinions and allusions to slave culture, and the lasting impacts it has had on black men and women in America.  Some of the observations are slightly confusing, such as the portrayal of the black cop in this world... two are presented, one of whom falls victim to the aforementioned misguided Junior, the other who plays savior to the protagonists in a tight situation.  Some of the observations are a bit heavy-handed, like the many visual and narrative references to the couple mimicking runaway slaves, finding safety among other ‘free folk’ and the previously mentioned Shepherd family (who come complete with hidden compartments in their floorboards).  The strongest observations in the film are those about how the public perceives our couple as revolutionaries, and not the victims of fate that they truly are.  The couple is continually propped up as revolutionaries, and like life, misguided revolutionaries born from invalid inspiration often create unfortunate circumstances, hence the protest that turns into a riot as an aside to the couple first making love (read : completely unaware of the world around them).  The idea of the philosophical quandary that is black existence in America is certainly present, but there seems to be more focus ultimately placed into the love story than the black experience.
Visually the film is strong, more than likely due to Melina Matsoukas having more than a decade of music video production experience under her belt.  The film covers a lot of ground in midwestern and southern America, and Matsoukas manages to capture the essence of the many landscapes passed through, from the rundown ghost of industry that is Ohio to the chameleon-like danger that hides in the beauty of Florida.  When focusing on the couple, the narrative is at its strongest, and although it does not completely fall apart when presenting questions and observations on a sociology level, it ultimately chooses to not take a firm stance.  The soundtrack was very enjoyable, with a nice balance of new school and old school obscure songs, be they underground hip-hop, alternative R&B or deep soul.
Daniel Kaluuya plays against type to a successful degree, showing the type of resolve and dignity that comes with being a man of faith, and instilling a sense of family values that film oftens forgets a black man is capable of possessing.  Jodie Turner-Smith, though quite standoffish throughout a larger portion of the film than she needs to be, does allow enough vulnerability to be present to make her eventual turn towards the tender be as believable as it is tragic.  Sturgill Simpson quickly escalates the story with his portrayal of a family man caught up in the most stressful of jobs, especially with the way he allows his character’s unfounded fears become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Jahi Di’Allo is a shine of hope at first, and though his eventual turn towards his own bad choice is a bit unfounded, his performance makes it powerful nonetheless.  Bokeem Woodbine is the MVP of this film, bringing the most entertaining, endearing and tortured character in the film to life with what is easily the most dynamic performance of all involved.  Flea and Chloe Sevingy are a pleasant surprise when they arrive, with Sevingy mirroring Turner-Smith in her cautious and hurried nature, and Flea echoing the humanity of Kaluuya, and all through powerful subtlety.
Queen & Slim is definitely a movie that will spark up as much conversation and debate as it provides entertainment.  As a directorial debut, it certainly shows the promise of Melina Matsoukas, and I believe that if she continues to produce and direct films, we will eventually get one (or more) truly powerful films out of her clearly creative and loving mind.

🇬🇧 Thomas is a policeman who tracks down a murderer, managing to shoot her down. But years later everything starts again. Despite what appeared to be an imitator, against all logic, the indications rule that it is the same person. With a promising start, a somewhat slow knot, and a denouement that compensates for some shortcomings.
