Hnn, as someone who's both terrified of needles and a huge animal lover it's so hard to watch...

Even though she's very mouselike herself, It's definitely really hard for Eve to get any sort of medical treatment because she's so tiny, things like giving her medication or taking samples can be a really big pain.

I have been aggravated by some online discourse so... For anyone out there writing vampire stories, from original works to fanfic: you cannot escape moral commentary or social issues when writing vampires. Even if your vampire exclusively drinks from blood bags, someone had to donate/sell their blood for them to survive. If your vampire only consumes animal blood, they are still imposing themselves on another living creature. For better or for worse, vampires are parasites by nature.

If you are not ready to keep this in mind while writing, even if you never explicitly mention it... You are not ready to write a vampire story.

It all starts with a lot of questions. They want to know everything about my sex life. Then if I've been to the dentist. Have I travelled lately. There are questions about my medication and if I identify as the same sex I was assigned at birth.

Then there's a needle. I trained myself into curiosity so I don't have to look away. Vibrant red runs through a little tube. They give me a blanket because I've forgotten my scarf and my arms get cold. They give me a star to pinch. Sometimes it's a heart.

It is, perhaps, my favourite hour that come around every two to four weeks, whenever they need me. Or part of me.

When life runs from my veins through a tube into a little bag. Elsewhere, elsewhen, the opposite will happen - my blood travels into someone else's body. And saves their life.

Like magic.
