while we're on the topic of 'can a cat pronounce [x]', could a cat make the 'ch' sound present in words like the scottish 'loch' and czech 'chrt' (basically to 'k' as 'th' is to 't'; make the 'k' sound but don't entirely touch the roof of your mouth, as in 'th')? i think they might be able to, as the placement is not dissimilar to clanmew's 'ss', but i'm not sure

They do and that's actually the sound of 'ch' that I put in Clanmew! Challah bread, loch, the composer Bach. You can kinda see it in the word for Swan-- Hchom. It's that low, curious whisper they make when they're investigating something.

(Side note: it has come to my attention that I, personally, am a birdwhisperer. you people are out there NOT being friends of swans?? They attack you guys????? every swan ive ever met in my life has been my personal disney princess companion)

Ch as in the English "Chirp" or "Chew" is usually approximated, instead, under Sh. They aren't all that different when you sound them out slowly.

Marianne would have never guessing how beautiful the beach was during sunset if she weren’t transported to this mysterious oasis along with many others. Of course the unfamiliar feeling of being homesick settled somewhere between her chest and the pit of her stomach, and the female wasn’t sure on how to deal with it. Did she miss the chaos of the Golden Deer classroom? Of course. There was never a quiet moment, which made it easy for her thoughts to be drowned out, and her fellow classmates were always considerate of her ways. It was a relief for her to see familiar faces also stranded there, but at the same time Marianne wasn’t quite sure if this whole thing was a blessing or a curse. Sure, she could see the appeal of it being like some sort of vacation getaway, but for her it was anything but. It was like putting innocent people into a cage with a monster, where she was the monster. The thought had her squeezing her hold tighter onto the fabric of her skirt. “I won’t be a monster. I can’t be a monster… Not here…” She spoke out to no one as she tried to calm her racing heart. Marianne was so caught up in her own thoughts that she did not realize another nearby. 

He’s hearing a conversation he shouldn’t be hearing right now. In fact, it was less of a conversation, and more of a... reminder to herself? A trail of sweat falls down along the wyvern rider’s neck. He could easily, very carefully, step back. Simply walk away quietly and ignore this happened.

The mention of a monster -- and becoming a monster -- irks him, however. Thinking more into the subject only summons headaches and blurry images, but he recalls a roar of a creature he’s never encountered before. The idea of this meek woman turning feral and monster like wasn’t too far off, and it’s because of that, he can’t simply walk away.

What can he say? What can he do? He doubts he’d influence her somehow. He’s just a stranger.

Regardless, he sighs and gives in. He walks forward, not back, pass the woman he only recognized as the girl from the stables. She’s always accompanied by a horse. Sometimes, by birds. A person he’s seen frequently enough in passing but never truly interacted with. 

He stops in front of her, feet tickled by the low waves that reached the shorelines.

“An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” He speaks, eyes set on the waters. She might not appreciate him acknowledging what he heard, so at the very least, he doesn’t look her way. He lightly kicks the waters, causing ripples and a stray crab to move elsewhere, pausing before continuing. “You shouldn’t let yourself be alone if such thoughts plague you.”

Little Egret foraging and flying over Sai Van Lake in Macau 

The little egret (Egretta garzetta) is a species of small heron in the family Ardeidae. It is a white bird with a slender black beak, long black legs and, in the western race, yellow feet. As an aquatic bird, it feeds in shallow water and on land, consuming a variety of small creatures. It breeds colonially, often with other species of water birds, making a platform nest of sticks in a tree, bush or reed bed.

@birdwhisperer Mission board:  The cats have gotten familiar enough with people that they’ve begun fearlessly raiding the kitchens! After the latest robbery, the kitchen staff needs your help. Will you go fish up what you can to save tonight’s meal, or chase after the culprits? The cats are crafty, so be sure to bring a group of friends with you to corner them! [Grants Gauntlet +1]

It had been a couple days since Leonie was approached by one of the kitchen maids with a request. According to them there had been crafty thieves running amok and raiding the kitchen. Leonie was just one of the many people who stopped to pet and feed the monastery cats; it was an act that came naturally when faced with the cute, fluffy creatures. Who would have thought that their actions would cost them tonight’s (and possibly future) meals?

Leonie had spent the last couple days trying to catch the slippery felines. Each attempt had ended in failure so far, the cats being too crafty and smart for their own good. Their sly schemes reminded her of a particularly clever house leader, though she wouldn’t say who exactly.

At the moment Leonie hid between two crates, staking out a group of cats she thought to be the ringleaders. If she could take out the ones leading the others, she was sure the raids would stop; it was basic beast mentality. Holding a net in hand she braced herself for the surprise attack when a sudden tap on her shoulder caused her to jump.

“WAH, Marianne?! Wait, no-!”

Her sudden exclamation made the cats jump in response, each of them darting off in their own direction as Leonie helplessly extended a hand.

“Ah, drat! They got away. I was so close too...”

With a sigh she stood up, dusting the dirt from her knees as she did so, and turned to face her classmate. Her brows knitted and her head tilted slightly in question, one hand resting gently on her hip. 

“Did you need something?”

“Oh, Marianne!” Ignatz had a feeling that the usually quiet and recluse housemate of his might not be as pleased with the current circumstances as the others are. Though he may not know everything about the reasons behind her demeanor, he imagines that she is likely not feeling too comfortable with so many people around. And surely enough, he finds her in some corner, away from the group.

Hopefully this little idea of his could do something to make things better.

“I had a feeling I could find you around here. If you don’t mind... I have something to show you. Would you mind coming with me?”

He leads her through a barely visible narrow path between the trees and bushes. The further away they get from the house, the quieter it becomes, until finally the only sounds accompanying them are the humming of the sea nearby, the wind’s whispers among the leaves, the chirping of a few nearby birds, and their own footsteps.

Finally they emerge from the greenery - onto a gorgeous little cove surrounded by trees and rocks. The sand is just as soft and warm as on the larger beach, the water just as blue and sparkling; the main difference is that they’re now away from the group, in a little world of their own.

“I found this place the other day, and I thought I should show you”, he says, turning to her with a gentle smile. “If it’s not presumptuous of me to ask... Perhaps you’d like to spend some time here instead? We can rest here, and look at the sea and the animals, and watch the sunset later... I-If you don’t mind me staying, that is.”
