Hey folks! You may recall I asked what people would be interested in if I did the Patreon dance, and the most frequently requested thing was WIPs. I've set up a single $3 tier with access to everything, with the intent of updating twice a month with process, including thoughts and decision making.

Today's update were some of the character illustrations I just finished for Daylight Publications (and have permission to share!) - but I have also been sneaky and there are posts from February showing work on a commission starting from the planning phase, and a timelapse of my Harengon in higher quality than I post publicly.

I realize that things are tight for everyone, and it is 100% okay if you cannot subscribe. You don't have to explain yourself, or feel bad. I understand, and there are many, many other things that money can buy. This is just an avenue available if you wish to support my art and have the means, without having to purchase a full commission.

I will continue my regular posting here. I also promise not to be too pushy with these posts and only post reminders at the beginning of the month.

another fun aspect of DRM is pirates will eventually break it, and your intended end-user (in this case your followers) may have a worse experience.

it's been noted that Glaze looks basically like bad JPG compression to human eyes, especially on its highest settings. this can be hidden pretty well in a painting style, and very obvious if you have a more hard-shaded style. i've also had friends discover it's pretty atrocious on grayscale paintings.

it is okay if you decide the small factor of protection it may add is not worth the degradation to your work. i work in multiple styles so i will probably have to make different calls on different pieces if a viable version of the software i can use exists in the future.

i just wanted folks to know it was an option.

Have already done the toggle but realistically I want you folks to understand something:

If you have anything online you should be assuming that is training data, regardless of what a website tells you. We half-acknowledge it every time someone says 'I bet the toggle doesn't do anything'. The toggle here, or the one on squarespace, or anywhere else, is a *request* to be excluded, and the black box nature of AI data harvesting is it would be very difficult to legally prove they disregarded the request. Maybe they decide to be above board and honor it, and then a crawler unaffiliated with MJ or OA ignore that tickbox and take for themselves.

Please consider every time you upload something anywhere that holds that data unencrypted, it is training data, whether or not anyone has been 'generous' enough to notify you.

Unfortunately I remain of the opinion that art exists to be a shared experience, so here I am, still postin'.

Appears to refer to a problem from last year (posts dated March 2023) where the students involved used code that they should not have for the user interface frontend. Post linked cites a tweet thread from the Glaze project runner.

So.... is the big scandal that they were called out, apologized, and corrected the problem, and reached out to the wronged party a year ago?* Because this really feels like a bad faith attack on folks that look like they made an error and owned up to it.

As for 'it uses it the same tech!' I'm not sure what that proves. Yes? What tech did you expect it to use? The project is more or less reverse-engineering the process to inject the watermark to disrupt it. The tech is actually pretty neat and impressive, I recommend reading up on AI and diffusive models in general so that you understand what we're up against rather than just fearing it blindly.

As for effectiveness:

What you're looking at is basically art DRM. Expect it to work like software DRM. It will be broken, and then made stronger, and broken again. You're looking at a digital arms race where you are, at best, slowing down your enemy, not defeating it, hoping that the legal system or public opinion catches up before you are eaten.

You can choose whether or not you personally want to get involved in that, but choose that based on information, not fear.
