hearing the opening notes of ‘sing, sing, sing’ and the collective groan from everyone at the swing dance. bc it is SUCH a good song and it is THE swing dancing song BUT it’s the full 8 minutes & 40 seconds you’re committing to dance to at an unending fast tempo and by the end EVERYONE is experiencing the gasping for air with burning lungs and quivering muscles and slippery palms and cramps under the ribs and beads of sweat running down your body like raindrops on a windshield and your feet weigh a thousand pounds but you can’t NOT dance. you can’t slow down. you can’t quit halfway. you HAVE to make it to the end. so ‘sing, sing, sing’ comes on and there’s the collective groan and then the frantic scrambling for a partner and then the aggressive jockeying for a space on the dance floor and THEN everyone comes alive to the sweet sounds of benny goodman & his orchestra and the feeling is unlike anything else in the world

Kitty Kellen had a voice that was as beautiful as she was. While Kitty’s singing and acting career was at it’s height post WW2, to me she will always be one of the premier voices of WW2 big band music.

The Mark Hopkins International Hotel is a genuine classic.
It appears in every movie ever made in San Francisco from Vertigo to Bullitt to the Woman in Red starring Gene Wilder.
During the big band era, the house band was Anson Weeks and the Mark Hopkins Orchestra (featuring Bob Crosby). They even composed a song named for the venue called The Mark Hop.

The " Chinese Andrews Sisters" - The Kim Loo Sisters were an American jazz vocal quartet popular during the swing era, the sisters began their careers as child entertainers in Minneapolis, Minnesota . During the Second World War they appeared on the Broadway stage and the Hollywood screen with actors including Frank Sinatra and were arguably the first Asian American act to star in Broadway musical revues.
Their father was Chinese from Guangzhou, Guangdong. Their mother was Polish from Buczacz, Poland, now Ukraine.
The Kim Loo Sisters made the transition from stage to screen with the Hollywood feature films. One of these, “Gee! The Jeep Jumps” was selected by the Library of Congress for their film archive.
Currently a musical about the lives of the sisters is being produced in St Paul Minnesota at the History Theater, a co production with Theater Mu

*not to be confused with The Kim Sisters who were a Korean-born American female vocal group who made their career in the US during the 1950s and 1960s

Every Sunday evening starting some time before 6pm, one of the major pop music radiostations in my area plays big band music and jazz (standards).
I just hope that there’s somewhere in Flanders now an elderly couple dining at home with a red rose in a tall, narrow vase and a candle stick on the table, dancing a slow waiting for the Boeuf Bourgignon to be ready.

In the 1930s, my Dad had a big band. He graduated from high school in 1933, and then he pursued his music career until he and my Mom married in 1940.
Most of his band stuff that I have was either in his travel trunk (which is in a plastic bag in my garage) or in a cabinet made by my grandfather (a cabinet maker from Germany). The cabinet is terribly heavy, and I wanted to go through some of the stuff in there since I need to move it to a new location in my house.
This was the first piece of sheet music I came across (with my Dad’s notes). “Minnie, The Moocher”, written and popularized by Cab Calloway. I love the cover art.

Welcome to the round up of posts from the week you might have missed on Smorgasbord. Greetings from wild and windy Ireland, and considering around 23% of Ireland’s electricity comes from wind power, I should say this week they have more than enough to spare! Ice is coming in for the next two to three days and being rural the roads tend to stay frosty until enough traffic has passed over them. So…
