sometimes when we’re not seeing things clearly it’s not because what we are seeing is totally wrong and needs to be wholly flipped on its head. that’s sometimes the case but actually not that frequently. it’s so much more common that we’re just missing some important pieces of the picture and can’t contextualize the information that we have even though it feels like we can because the information IS true.

i’ve been thinking a lot recently about how to exist.

cause i have all this privilege to hold, you know?

and coming of age, where i am, as who i am, means i’m buying into a lot of corrupt and dysfunctional systems.

you can’t really blame a child for their circumstances, but i’m close to becoming an adult.

so if i want to take a drive and listen to music i like, that’s putting carbon monoxide into the environment.

and if i buy my favorite food, as cheap as i can, in the grocery store, that’s being complicit in unethical supply chain systems and the exploitation of people and countries poorer than me and mine.

just by existing in the mode of life into which i was born, i feel as if i’m causing suffering that i cannot displace unless i am exceptional. i can’t justify this privilege.

so the answer would be to escape this mode of life. but the thing that’s so insidious about it is that it’s everywhere. even when and where you think it isn’t.

and the privilege i’m born with, to be in a rich country, in a well-off family, in a supportive environment, isn’t exactly something i can escape. i can’t atone for it either. what would that do?

how do you exist within this world?? do you just become numbed to the guilt and shame as you live? or else become a recluse divorced from all social norms?

and to become exceptional, as my justification for being so goddamn lucky, seems impossible either. i don’t know how to be a beacon of hope or kindness or resource. i would help everyone on earth if i could. i would be an artist bringing comfort and solace and unity if i could.

but i feel like every step i take into the world leaves a bloody print behind. do you know what i mean?
