actually yknow what, no. this is not being limited to discord, yall get it too.
some general cooking tips (in which there is a brief senshi posession):
moisture is the enemy of crispy skin. pat dry with paper towel, and if you have the time and spoons, give a thorough but even coat of baking powder and let sit uncovered in your fridge overnight. this will dry out the skin nicely. for pork belly, create a tight foil boat so that only the skin is showing, and cover in salt to draw out moisture, repeating a couple times if necessary.
furikake seasoning, for the fellow rice lovers, is just nori (seaweed), sesame seeds, sugar, and msg/salt. you might have most if not all of these things already in your kitchen.
chai spice mix is just cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, & allspice.
pumpkin spice is just cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
to cure your own bacon, you only need water, white and brown sugar, and a non-iodized salt - himalayan pink salt is not iodized, if you cannot find butchers curing pink salt. from there, you can add any seasoning/flavoring you want.
the truly adventurous may cook their rice in green tea for a fresh clean taste.
you can tell if a fish is truly fresh by their eyes - clear and bright is fresh, while cloudy is older or potentially has been frozen.
it's cheaper to buy a large block pack of ramen from your local asian market and repackage the bricks into sandwich bags, than to buy a box of individually packaged ones such as maruchan or top ramen.
when buying meat, look at it's fat content - more fat marbling usually means more tender + flavorful.
you can save onion skins and other vegetable scraps to make your own broth with. you can also save bones for this. mix and match ratios to create your ideal flavor.
bay leaf will always make a soup or broth taste better, but Watch Out (they are not fun to bite into on accident).
msg is, in fact, not The Devil, that was just a racist hate campaign against the chinese and other oriental races. it's literally just a type of salt. it is no more dangerous to eat than any other type of salt.
washing your rice is important because it not only improves flavor and texture by removing excess starch, but it also helps reduce any residual pesticides or dirt, or even insect fragments (please remember that rice paddies are essentially giant ponds that all kind of things live in and swim around. you should also be washing all your produce in general.)
please salt your cooking water for pastas, it just tastes better and you will be happier for it.
boiled potatoes are also improved by salt water.
if you hate vegetables, please consider trying them fried in butter or perhaps bacon grease. it is healthier to eat them fatty than not at all.
healthy food does not in fact have to taste miserable. thats a lie. they are lying to you. free yourself from your blandness shackles. enter a world of flavor.

[ID: A bowl full of whole and ground spices in various shades of red, orange, and green. End ID]
カレー粉 / Kare ko (Japanese curry powder)
Kare ko is a spice blend that spread to Japan in the late Meiji era as a result of British imperialism. The blend (like curry powder in general) originates from a British approximation of a range of South Asian spice profiles. Domestic manufacture and sale of kare ko began in 1905 with Hachi; S&B, who began production in 1923, currently hold the major market share.
Kare ko is adapted to Japanese tastes, and is usually not very spicy. It is dominated by coriander, turmeric, and cumin, but also contains spices such as fenugreek, cardamom, clove, and star anise, as well as dried herbs including sage and dill. Popular comfort dish kare raisu ("curry rice," a pairing of rice and a curried stew featuring carrots and potatoes), uses kare ko as its primary source of flavor; kare ko is also used to make curry ramen and curry udon.
The benefit of making this spice blend at home is in its freshness and its customizability—play around with the proportions of different spices until you get something you like!
Recipe under the cut.
Patreon | Tip jar
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp (3.5g) coriander seeds
1 tsp (2.6g) turmeric
1 tsp (2.5g) cumin seeds
5-6 pods (1/2 tsp; 1g) green cardamom
1 tsp freshly ground nutmeg, or 1/2 tsp pre-ground (.6g)
1/2 tsp (2g) fenugreek seeds
1/2 tsp (.7g) ground ginger
1/2 tsp (1.3g) ground garlic
1/2 tsp (1.5g) yellow mustard seeds
1/2 tsp (1g) fennel seeds
1 cm piece (1/4 tsp; .7g) cassia cinnamon
1/2 tsp (1.3g) black pepper
1/2 tsp (1.2g) paprika
1/2 tsp (1.2g) cayenne pepper (optional)
4-5 (1/4 tsp; .5g) whole cloves
2-3 (1/4 tsp; .5g) allspice berries
2 Mediterranean bay leaves (laurel)
1 star anise pod (2g)
1 tsp chen pi (dried tangerine or mandarin orange peel) (1.2g)
1/4 tsp (.2g) dried thyme
1/4 tsp (.2g) dried sage
1/4 tsp (.2g) dried dill
Pinch MSG (optional)
Pinch asafoetida (hing; optional)
Chen pi is commonly used in Chinese and Japanese cooking and can be purchased at an East Asian grocery store.
Though Japanese curry powder is ultimately drawing from South Asian cuisine, recipes for it tend to call for Mediterranean bay leaves rather than Indian bay leaves (tej patta; really a type of cinnamon leaf).
Instructions:
1. In a dry skillet on medium, toast large whole spices (cinnamon, star anise, green cardamom, cloves, allspice) for a few minutes until fragrant and set aside. Repeat with smaller seeds (coriander, cumin, fenugreek, mustard, and fennel) and bay leaf. Set aside and allow to cool.
2. Remove skillet from heat. Toast ground spices and dried herbs, stirring constantly, for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Remove from skillet.
3. Grind all spices and herbs in a spice mill or mortar and pestle and strain through a fine mesh sieve. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Pretty late for fall prompts but if you’re feeling it, G/ood O/mens? 🤧🍁🤐
late again, but the husbands enjoy the fall weather or at least one of them does.
A Yellow Wood
“Well I like spooky.  Big spooky fan me.”
That wasn’t a lie Crowley did enjoy the whole spooky season as it were.  The atmosphere, the ghost stories, the whole slant towards wicked deeds, but not in a destructive way usually.   He took credit for the pumpkin spice craze and as a mid-level annoyance to off-set rounding up every cat he could find for safety during the plague times.  And if he was still doing that with a shelter back behind the garden shed well Aziraphale pretended not to know about it.  It really was a wonderful season they’d come up with.
He just didn’t, you know, like being outside for any of it.
Ironic that when everything was mostly dying off or bedding down for winter it bothered his nose so much more than when everything was popping up fresh in spring.  Not to mention it was embarrassing whoever heard of a demon allergic to fall for Satan’s sake!  Now at their cottage thankfully there was little cause for concern.  Not one stray leaf, or speck of pollen, or spot of mold dared to enter his garden.
The local craft market however not so much.
Aziraphale insisted on attending, going on about getting along with their neighbours and window shopping.   Crowley was coming too obviously, what was he going to do not spend the afternoon with his angel?  Of course not.
So having popped a few meds in the vain hope they would help and discreetly tucked several tissues into his pockets they set off, crunching through the fallen leaves on the ground. The sound alone seemed to bother his nose and he rubbed at it, stepping back a half step so Aziraphale wouldn’t notice.
Thankfully his angel was easily distracted taking time to admire every stall and talk to those running them.  Less thankful was Aziraphale grabbing a potent candle shoving it directly under his nose.
“I think this will be just lovely in the lounge, don’t you agree, Crowley?”
A sharp snap of his fingers was all that kept the sudden burning urge to sneeze at bay.
“Uh, yeah it’s-it’s great, Angel.”
Aziraphale turned to pay for three of them and Crowley managed to slink off and duck behind the nearest tree, though that certainly didn’t help matters, as he fumbled for the tissues and pressed them to his face to stifle the fit.
“hh’NXXtch! heh’GNITChh! Huh-huh…Hh’itSHHhh!”
Another snap of his fingers managed to clear his sinuses for the moment.  Crowley adjusted his sunglasses so they weren’t pressing so tightly against the now tender areas.  While still keeping his eyes covered, and forced himself not to rub them.  Then he went back to his angel, purchasing a snack he didn’t even like so at least he would stop offering for him to smell everything.
***
When the afternoon was finally over Aziraphale went about setting up the all new items he’d purchased humming pleasantly.   Meanwhile Crowley dragged himself off to the bedroom, dumped his glasses on the nearest surface and sat down on the bed with a congested sigh.  Rubbing at his eyes trying to relieve the pressure that had built up as the day wore on.  The constant use of miracles had left him drained and tired, and keeping all the congestion back had now turned it in to firm cement which was only exacerbating his headache.
“Crowley?”
“Hmm?”
“Is something wrong?”
He shook his head as Aziraphale sat down beside him.
“Well it’s just that you seem rather…distance.”
“Don’t mean to be, Angel, it’s just my a-heh-allergies,” he confessed too tired to bother hiding it anymore.
Aziraphale’s eyes widened in surprise. “Oh, to what?”
Crowley just gestured vaguely to the window as a few stray leaves passed by in the wind.
“But why wouldn’t you say something?”
Crowley shrugged. “You wanted to go out today and I like watching you like things.”
He curled his fist under his nose as it began to twitch.
“Heh-heh-snf! Just overdid it a bit trying to keep myself under control and-huh-huh…uhhh…ugh, sorry.”
There was a warm hand on his shoulder. “Crowley, you don’t have to do that.”
“Can’t do much else I-ihhh…hehh…”he huffed out another sigh at losing the sneeze once more.  He was just so stuffed up.
“Oh, do let me help.”
Aziraphale moved them fully on the bed and began moving his thumbs between his eyes in a gentle massage.  Working to slowly dislodge the congestion and as it worked he covered Crowley’s nose with a conjured soft beige handkerchief.
As his fingers stroked up and down his nose Crowley couldn’t help but notice through his watery eyes that his angel seemed rather flushed.
“You know I think snf! You’re getting more enjoy-heh-enjoyment out of this than I am, Angel,” he said, his breathes coming in softer pants as the teasing of his nose continued.
“Do let me concentrate, my dear,” he answered, as he moved his finger pointedly down again.
Crowley jerked back reflectively as he hit a sensitive spot and the tickle flared up hard.
“A-Angel I…huh-I’m gonna-ahh…really sn-snehhh…sneeze this time.”
Aziraphale nodded and pulled him close again.
“Let them come, Crowley, I assure you I don’t mind.”
“Ehhh-ehh’ESHHhh! ASUHHHh! ISHHUu! I think that’s all-ahh’EASHHhh! huhh’ESUUHHhhu!...snf! Thag you.”
Aziraphale kept the handkerchief firmly in place and allowed Crowley to clear himself out.
When the demon at last pulled away from him Aziraphale spent far too long admiring his pink nose and then glanced down sheepishly.  “You were right, Crowley I do enjoy it, but was I too forward?”
Crowley smirked. “Like I said, Angel, I like watching you like things.”
The End

Thess vs Food Stereotypes
Okay, really getting tired of this.
I didn’t want to hijack the post doing the rounds about “British kids try biscuits and gravy for the first time” and people getting judgemental about British cooking based on a few kids whose idea of ‘biscuit’ is very different than the American version and one British uni student’s aversion to spice. Thing is, though ... I live here, and I moved here from Canada (Montreal, even, which has a reputation for being as foodie as Paris but with a lot more politeness) by way of the United States. I’ve seen the stereotypes from all three countries, and when it comes to England, I’ve been everywhere from tiny hamlets to ... well, London, where I currently reside.
A lot of “traditional dishes” lack for spice here, true. However ... did y’all forget, while you were going, “American versions of recipes from other places have such flavour because poor / low class immigrants brought the recipes here”, that Britain was a fucking empire? We bitch about British colonialism all the time, and fair enough, but no one seems to have considered the huge variety of food that brought to this tiny wet little island. Even in the tiniest hamlets you’ll generally find an Indian takeaway, always family-run, always by families who came from the country from which the cuisine originated, some as recently as a generation ago. Bigger cities, and especially someplace like London? You’ll find a lot more. Hell, I live near an area that’s a blend of Afro-Caribbean, Nigerian, and Filipino, and the food you’ll find in the area reflects that. And I don’t just mean restaurants either; people who live here are clearly making that stuff at home, if the local markets are any indication. It’s the same all over, with a lot of emphasis on Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese, Filipino, and the foods of various African nations. Britain colonised these countries, and maybe the white people don’t make as much use of the spices they got by doing so as they could? But some do.
Also ... dude, they have herbs here. And they use them. Stews are full of thyme and sage and bay leaf. Sauces are a thing - mint for lamb, applesauce (not the sweet dessert kind; the kind where the tartness of the apple is maintained) for pork, fucking horseradish for beef. Root vegetables like parsnips and carrots are often roasted in a honey glaze, and never underestimate how a flavour profile changes if you change what fat you’re using for roasting a potato. (Seriously, just try roasting potatoes in goose fat.) Gravy? They have gravy; not as thick, and more generally devoted to the flavours of the juices of the roast, but they have gravy.
Britain has a different, earthier, occasionally sweeter flavour profile to a lot of its traditional dishes than other countries, yes. And there are a lot of people in this country who fear anything more than one clove of garlic, yes. However, there are Americans who fear anything that doesn’t taste of grease and mayonnaise, too (which is the stereotype, I’m afraid). So maybe can we lean less into the stereotype and, while trying unfamiliar foods, also do some research and try a variety of those unfamiliar foods instead of judging an entire country’s palate based on a couple of school kids who don’t know the American South’s version of a biscuit? Just be happy they’re loving it.
And go try some bubble and squeak sometime. Lancashire hot pot. Cornish pasty. Cullen skink. Hell, shepherd’s pie! It’s not all boiled everything, y’know.

Blood and Vengeance - Part 3
A/N: Enjoy some fluff and simple slice of life stuff!
Pairing: Dettlaff x Reader
Words: 1874
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 (final)
__________
Chattering voices and the call of vendors spread through the air as you made your way through the market with Amelia. You two were gathering groceries for the next week or so at the manor as well as doing a bit of personal shopping on the side.
“Your arms are looking a lot better than they were a few days ago.  I was worried you’d look like a cherry for the rest of your life!” your companion exclaimed above the noise of the market's bustling patrons.
“Oh Amelia, you always know exactly what to say, don’t you?” you teased and laughed as she handed you another bag of groceries to carry. “Fortunately, Dettlaff gave me a little something to help my burn or I’d still  be looking more cherry-like than ever.”
“He gave you a gift? I still have yet to hear a single peep out of him! Regis does all the talking with me- not that I mind, he’s plenty nice-” she said, turning to you with raised eyebrows. “But he must be taking quite a liking to you. Have you talked to him since?”
You smiled as you thought about it, and nodded, “A few times. Right after I got burned was a little awkward, but I rather like speaking to him. He’s more candid than I expected, but it’s kind of refreshing, you know?” Your eyes wandered idly as you thought back to those meetings. Since he had given you that jar of burn cream you’d been able to make a little conversation with him when you arrived to light his fireplace in the morning or to bring him a glass of wine. He never hid how he felt on a subject when you brought them up and always seemed keen on hearing your side as well, even when it was obvious you knew far less about it than he did.
“Y/n? Y/n!” Amelia called you back to the present as she waved her hand in front of your face. “Getting a little lost in thought thinking about Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome?” she snickered playfully, “I guess he’s not the only one whose taken a liking…”
“Amelia!” Your cheeks flushed bright red as you bumped her shoulder with your own, “You stop that or I’m going to stop playing pack mule for you!” You held up the various bags of produce that kept your hands full.
“Hmm, I’m still not hearing a no..” she teased, laughter trailing away as she ran ahead to escape your friendly wrath.
The two of you meandered the rest of the market, picking up extra treats here and there when you found yourself stopping in front of a used bookshop. It seemed a little empty inside as you peered in the front window, a little dusty, and piled with countless books- just as any good bookshop should be. But what really caught your eye was the green book being showcased front and center.
It was pale green in color with various moths etched in gold leaf on the cover, the largest one reminding you of the pin that adorned Dettlaff’s coat.
Moths of Nazair and The Surrounding Regions its title read, and you knew it would be perfect.
You set the heaping bags of groceries down, taking a quick moment to duck inside the shop. A cough scratched at your lungs as ages of dust plumed up from your disturbance of the idle air. An old lady- looking a little dusty herself- eyed you as you came in, smiling in a way that emphasized her deep laugh lines.
After a nod of acknowledgment, you went straight to the bay window to scoop it up, taking a quick glance at the price inside the cover.
”Oh that's… more than I was hoping it would be.” You mumbled quietly to yourself. It would take a little over half of the money you had put away… but you knew it would be worth it when you gave it to him. After all, you could always save more later, right?
“Is there a problem, Dear?” The old woman called, her voice too was worn with age, but her short steps shuffled over with a surprising pace to help you.
“Oh, it's nothing.” you tried to assure her, “I was just… I thought this would be an excellent gift for a... a friend-yes, a friend of mine..” You smiled shyly, embarrassed at the way you paused as you decided what to call him.
Her eyes sparkled with a slightly mischievous sense of knowing as she nodded in response. “Say no more, Dearie. I understand exactly what you mean.” her tone was light and even a little teasing as she headed back to the front counter, waving at you to follow her.
“I’ll tell you what,” she started as she sat back on her stool with a huff of effort, “I’ll give you a good discount on the book, okay?” she said, “I know that look, Dear. Had it once myself even, so  I’ll be no fool and stand in the way of a young love like that…” she said, undoubtedly reminiscing in the romantic adventures of her own youth.
Your cheeks darkened and felt as hot as the sun as she spoke, but even that couldn’t stop the grin from pulling at your lips as you brought the book up to pay and slipped it into your coat for safekeeping. “Thank you, It’s gonna be perfect
---
Dettlaff’s sensitive ears immediately picked up the sound of your familiar footsteps as they came  near and the front gate groaning out your welcoming. He had been listening closer as of late to when you came back from town. He assured himself (as well as Regis) that it was not because he was concerning himself with something as complicated as a human, nor was it because he found himself enjoying when you visited after getting back. It wasn’t even because he found that he missed the sound of your voice in your absence or the gentle thrumming of your heart beneath your skin. No, he would tell anyone that asked that he listened only to make sure you arrived back safely.
It was not uncommon for him or Regis to leave for a few hours or days at a time, they’d smoke away into the night, taking in the surroundings as they went. Regis had just arrived back with a message; There was a group of bandits beginning to move closer to the town; they seemed to only move by night right now, but there was no telling how bold they would be once they reached the town’s limits.
Dettlaff knew Regis only warned him so he’d be prepared and not lash out lest anything happen, but he only found himself worrying more and more the longer you had been out.
“Dettlaff? I have a surprise for you” you said, interrupting his thoughts as you nudged open the library door carefully.
“Y/n” He spoke your name with a faint breath of relief like a man in the desert whose finally seen rain. His brows furrowed downward when he registered your other words, “A surprise? You know I hate surprises.”
“Yeah, I know,” you shrugged, with a small smile. You held one hand behind your back and led with a cup of blood-red wine in the other.
“And yet you still do it?” he asked.
“Only because I know it’ll be a good one…” A shy but lovely smile crossed your lips as you set the wine before him slipping the book on the table beside it. You took a half step back and watched his face for a reaction as he lifted the book to inspect it.
“What’s this..? I know this isn’t from our library…” he commented as he looked it over, Moths of Nazair and the Surrounding Regions. He ran his fingers briefly over the golden moth the cover held and opened it to the inside cover where he found your simple inscription.
‘To Dettlaff,
So no matter where you are, you’ll always have a piece of home.
-         From Y/n’
“I remembered you telling me in passing that you were from Nazair and since you wear that pin everywhere you go, I thought you might like seeing the moths you grew up with…” you trailed off as you explained. You wrung your fingers in your hand as you thought everything over again, ‘was this really a good idea? Maybe this is too bold of a move for what we are right now… wait- we aren’t even anything, why am I so worried?’
It hadn’t been terribly long since you had started working here, but you already found yourself  being pulled in by this stormy-eyed man. One of the things you loved most about him was… rather complicated to express actually. When you watched him go about life and when you two spoke especially- it was almost as if he spoke with ten lifetimes worth of experience. Lifetimes worth of grief, joy, and loss…. You had always considered yourself something of an old soul, but you’re certain that compared to Dettlaff your soul looked like an absolute infant.
But it wasn’t only that- It was that despite so much experience and existence being held inside one person he still felt so much. And though- as you had seen firsthand- there are some downsides to all that concentrated emotion, you wouldn't have it any other way.
The corner of his mouth quirked up slightly in confusion as he looked over the cover of the book once more. “You bought this for me… But why?” He asked, hoping to understand exactly what you were trying to get at. Did you want something in return the way all humans did? Or was this purely altruistic? Or perhaps you just softening him up for something terrible you were about to do?
He had begun growing rather attached to you since that first and fateful day and he was not about to be played like a fool for thinking better of you.
“Why?” you repeated as you blinked in surprise- no one ever really had this reaction to a gift before. “Well… it’s because I instantly thought of you when I saw it. The moth on the cover looked a little bit like your pin and I thought it might make you happy to have..” You answered honestly. your mind worried restlessly on whether your impression of him and you had been all wrong.
But instead of looking upset you watched his expression smooth out and even a small and subtle smile make its way onto his face. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been correct when assuming the best of someone, but then again you just keep surprising him, don’t you?
With another glance at your gift, the small smile still lingering on his lips he finally spoke. “Y/n, would you like to stay a while with me..?” he asked hopefully, “I can help you finish your tasks for today if it makes any difference…”
Your own expression morphed into a large dopey grin as you took a seat before him on his chair’s ottoman.
“I would love nothing more.”

Nuri spiced sardines in olive oil
“Seriously, are you still watching that?!”, my partner, Haley, asks. “It's been 3 hours and you're still watching canned sardine reviews?!”
“Tin reviews”, I replied,
Pre-Covid, tinned sardines were definitely not an exciting lunch idea to me. In 2018, I thoroughly enjoyed plump, charcoal grilled sardines on the southern coast of Spain, but frankly, chomping down on a dozen shiny, little, cold, oily fish was never an appetising idea. We had plenty of fresh seafood growing up in New Zealand that, I guess tinned fish wasn't something we ate much of at all. We had tinned tuna, but that really is about it. I didn't have my first tuna melt until Haley made me one on one of our early dates. A simple combination which I was weary about at first, quickly became a staple.
Nowadays, as I spend plenty of time online, and some time outside in the real world, it's becoming clearer that more people are grasping the great idea of cheap and easy omega-3 fatty acids -- sardines! There are “Tin of the month” clubs, YouTube channels, TikTok accounts and Discord groups which all revolve directly around the ever growing tinned fish cult (or is it a fad? , maybe a chat for another day). Today, sardines and other tins of preserved seafood are something I keep an eye out for in every little market I walk by. I went to a few Asian supermarkets last week and found plenty of options. Sometimes hidden gems, entire walls of tinned seafood ( 1kg tins of fried dace??, maybe next time, thanks )).
After an unsuccessful hunt for this particular brand around my current home of Vancouver BC, I turned to Dan at Rainbow Tomato Garden. The largest selection of tinned seafood IN THE WORLD should have what I need. A few days of adding tins, removing tins, reading reviews and calculating funds, I eagerly placed an order for a box of mixed tins, including a little stack of NURI brand. This Portugal based company is known to produce excellent tinned sardines, and have a history of tinning a superior product. Their website quotes them to be “the only company that remains faithful to the traditional method throughout its production.” Since 1920 they have been pumping out tins using their homemade secret recipes. A short wait after shipping, a USPS box of goodness was on my doorstep.
After seeing so much talk and hype online about the Nuri Spiced Sardines in Olive Oil i decided to give one a rip for myself.
The brand has simple and recognizable packaging, paper wrapper over a tin. Something about it being my first tin of Nuri made me want to keep the wrapper, such a simple but fond memory. Right at the crack of the tin, I knew these were going to be great. The “someone just opened a tin of dines” smell was there, but extremely subtle. It almost smelt like very light pickle brine. Definitely not an unpleasant smell, which sardines often get such a bad reputation for. Peeling back the lid revealed 3 chunky boys, shimmering in the olive oil. The fish were packed tightly enough to be touching, but were firm to the touch. Firm enough for me to easily grab the middle one out with chopsticks, with little damage. The skin on all the fish was already very damaged, with large parts missing. What little skin there was, was falling off the flesh once removed from the oil. Less or broken skin is not something I'm complaining about. Less skin means less scales! No one likes eating scales.
Half a fish for the first bite; these are damn delicious. A savoury, slightly salty taste and the firm bite to go with. A complete surprise to how subtle the flavour is. Really a delight and far less “fishy” than most people would expect. The cartilage in the spine had completely dissolved into the fish and had become soft, not bringing any noticeable crunch. The trio of sardines came packed with one slice of carrot, one slice of pickle, one little red chilli, part of a dried bay leaf and a clove. A classic combination to bring subtle heat and flavour to the oil and meat. You can see the workers at the Nuri factory hand packing the ingredients in this Youtube Video. Onto the operating table for the second oily boi; I removed the spine and ate that separately (my favourite part). Once the fish was on a plate I could really notice the colours in the meat, varying from white to a dark purple pink. The deeper the colour, the stronger the flavour. The oil kept a nice shine on everything and had a very light olive flavour. It had a light yellow colour that was still clear and glossy even after all this time marinating the fish. I personally love an olive oil tin over a soya oil tin. The carrot and pickle went down next, neither of which tasted like pickle or carrot. The flavour of both must get leached into the oil by the time it gets out to us consumers. The lucky last sardine went down on simple salted saltines with a bit more hot sauce. Adding the crackers to the table obviously makes for more texture, but it also creates more of a vessel for the extra hot sauce I was drizzling on top. I haven't been able to find a bottle of the famous Salsa Espinaler locally yet, which I have read is perfect on all fish, but I have a few more artisanal stores to check out before I resort to buying online. The heat was subtle, to put it subtly. One little chilli adds little to no mouth buzz sensation. The Nuri Extra spiced uses 3 chillies per tin, so I will have to test that tin to see if they have some real spice and mouth feel.
Two saltines and three fish. Not a meal I used to go out of my way to have, but today was a healthy and highly enjoyable lunch. These sardines could easily be broken up and put on top of a salad, used as a “sardine melt” or lightly floured and then fried in their own oil. My next tin of Nuri spiced, i'm going to use this beer batter recipe: Beer Battered ‘Dines.
When a store in my hometown starts to stock Nuri brand, I will be first in line ready to pick up a stack of tins. I would love to have the spiced sardines in olive oil as my “go to tin”, I mean, who wouldn't?  I recommend these to any non-sardine eater, someone who is looking to try their first tin, or to impress someone on a first date! The subtleness would be an ideal way to ease someone into the flavour rather than starting them off with Oskars Surstromming. Do yourself a favour, find a local supplier of Nuri, pick up a tin and give it a crack!
Tin Rating - 4/5

Exploring Culinary and Medicinal Applications: Bay Leaf Market Dynamics
Tumblr media
The Global Bay Leaf Market is riding high on the trends of organic cuisines The global bay leaf market is a multibillion-dollar industry driven by the growing popularity of organic and whole foods cuisine around the world. Bay leaves are the aromatic leaves of the bay laurel plant and have wide applications in various cuisines due to their distinctive flavor profile. When added to soups, stews, meats, and vegetable dishes, bay leaves impart a complex herbaceous aroma and taste. Due to various health-promoting properties attributed to bay leaves such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities, they are a popular ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. The Global Bay Leaf Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 887.4 Mn in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.1% over the forecast period 2023 to 2030. Key Takeaways Key players operating in the bay leaf market are House of Spices (India) Inc., Mars Incorporated, Goya Foods, Olam International, McCormick & Company Incorporated, Frontier Natural Products Co-op Inc., Anatoli Spices, Pacific Spice Company Inc., Zizira, Alpina Organic Company, Mountain Rose Inc., The Spice Hunter Inc. Key players are focusing on increasing their production capacities and expanding into new markets to leverage the growing demand. The demand for bay leaves is increasing worldwide due to the numerous culinary and medicinal applications of bay leaves. Their distinctive aroma and flavor profile make bay leaves a staple ingredient in various cuisines. Furthermore, the rising health consciousness and preference for organic products are propelling the consumption of bay leaves globally. Key players are expanding their global footprint to leverage the vast untapped growth potential in emerging markets. Regions such as Asia Pacific and Latin America are witnessing rapid urbanization and rising disposable incomes which is fueling the adoption of Mediterranean cuisine incorporating more herbs and spices like bay leaves. Companies are investing in distribution channels and marketing initiatives to increase accessibility and raise awareness about the various uses of bay leaves. Market key trends One of the key trends gaining traction in the bay leaf market is the growing demand for organic bay leaves. Customers are increasingly preferring organic ingredients in their foods due to various perceived health and environmental benefits. Organic bay leaves are cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and their demand is driven by health-conscious consumers and chefs emphasizing whole foods. This trend is compelling suppliers to augment their organic product portfolio and develop innovative organic packaging solutions to meet consumer needs.
Porter’s Analysis Threat of new entrants: Bay leaf has low growth and finds application primarily in culinary uses. Established brands dominate the market which makes entry difficult for new players. Bargaining power of buyers: Buyers have moderate to high bargaining power due to availability of substitutes and undifferentiated nature of bay leaf. Buyers can negotiate on price with suppliers. Bargaining power of suppliers: A few countries such as Turkey, India and Sri Lanka dominate global supply of bay leaves. This gives suppliers significant power over buyers. Threat of new substitutes: Herbs and spices such as oregano, thyme, cinnamon and cloves can be used in place of bay leaves for cooking. This presents a moderate threat of substitution. Competitive rivalry: The global bay leaf market is highly fragmented with presence of several small and private label players. Pricing pressure exists due to low product differentiation. Turkey accounts for around 60% of global production of bay leaves. Ideal climate and soil conditions enable Turkey to be the dominant player globally in terms of bay leaf production volumes. The Asia Pacific region is seeing the fastest growth in demand for bay leaves driven by growth in food industries in countries like India, China, Indonesia and Philippines. Expanding middle class populations and rising disposable incomes in the region are fueling the usage of herbs and spices in cooking.

For those who don't know, I'm a huge garden nerd. Ask about my garden and you'll get an earful.
Tumblr media
I'm very fortunate to live IN San Francisco proper, and yet have a large, private back yard. It's what sold us on this space! The previous couple that lived here built a raised bed in the back and obviously grew a lot of veggies. Last summer after we moved in, I discovered an artichoke plant, butterhead lettuce (which we ended up making wraps with), carrots & more surprises growing in the bed!
This year I went a little overboard with my seed order, and got more types of plants than I have room to grow. This year also had the coldest and most prolonged winter that I have ever felt in the Bay Area. Mid-March was supposed to be my "last frost date", but the weather was still shit. Zone 9b? Yeah, right. Also, our yard is sort of boxed in by some taller buildings on a few sides, which very inconveniently limits the amount of direct sun most of my beds receive. My poor pepper plants will never make it to fruition, lol. And forget trying to grow squash! PLUS there have been pests that have devoured many a seedling. Needless to say, it's been a learning experience!
Here are some plants that I HAVE grown, successfully, that we have been able to harvest and eat this year!
*Garlic (grown from individual cloves that had sprouted in our kitchen cupboard)
*snap peas (the exact variety was called "sugar daddy snap peas" ;))
*Butterhead and Merlot lettuce (both are so yummy omg)
*Kale (still going strong, probably the most successful crop so far)
*Swiss Chard (close second to Kale, just sometimes gets hit by leaf miners)
*Green onions (two different varieties, bought at the Asian market with the roots still attached, stuck em in the ground and have been letting them do their thing)
*HEEEEEEEEERBS! Cilantro, rosemary, thyme, oregano, peppermint, chocolate mint, lavender, sage, and more are all happy as can be out here! Also CHAMOMILE has been *prolific*. I planted two starters in two different spots last summer, they did their thing, died back, and reseeded *everywhere*. It even grows out of the cracks between paved stones ffs -_- A lovely fan bought us an herb dryer a while ago, and we're planning to share the chamomile with friends. Fucking chamomile. Whew.
Tumblr media
If anyone's interested in following my garden ramblings on here, I'll try to keep all related posts tagged #Denalis Garden on my tumblr. And I'd love to make some tumblr friends who also garden! I'll post some photos later. Now I'm off to plant more seeds!

Discover the Secret Ingredient: Bay Leaf Market's Unrivaled Collection for Food Enthusiasts
Tumblr media
Bay leaves are aromatic leaves that are commonly used to flavor soups, stews, braised meats and vegetarian dishes. They add a subtle yet complex flavor to foods when simmered for an extended period of time. Bay leaves have antioxidants that aid digestion and help manage blood sugar levels. The demand for bay leaves is growing as more people incorporate them in everyday cooking to enhance flavor in a healthy manner.
The global Bay Leaf Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 887.4 Mn in 2023 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.1% over the forecast period 2023-2030, as highlighted in a new report published by Coherent Market Insights. Market Opportunity: The growing awareness about the health benefits of bay leaves is estimated to provide opportunity for market growth. Bay leaves contain antioxidant phenolic compounds like eugenol and myrcene that aid digestion by stimulating production of bile in the liver. This helps in proper absorption of nutrients and management of blood sugar levels. The awareness about such health advantages is increasing people's consumption of bay leaves instead of opting for chemical-based flavoring agents. With rising health consciousness, the usage of bay leaves in food applications is expected to rise notably over the forecast period. This will create demand and drive the global Bay Leaf Market during 2023-2030. Porter's Analysis
Threat of new entrants: Low as bay leaf market is dominated by established players. Significant capital is required to build infrastructure and distribution network.
Bargaining power of buyers: Moderate as bay leaf has substitutes. However, brand loyalty and taste preferences keep bargaining power in check.
Bargaining power of suppliers: High as a few countries dominate global production. Switching costs are low for buyers.
Threat of new substitutes: Moderate threat from other herbs and spices used as substitutes in similar applications like Italian/Indian cuisines.
Competitive rivalry: Fierce competition between top players to grab market share through quality, pricing and innovation.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths: Bay leaf is widely used in culinary applications. Established brands have distribution reach.
Weaknesses: Seasonal availability affects stable supply. Pricing pressure exists from private labels.
Opportunities: Growth in global food industry. Increase in demand for Mediterranean/Arabic cuisines using bay leaf.
Threats: Substitutes available. Climate change impact on production.
Key Takeaways
The global bay leaf market is expected to witness high growth. The global Bay Leaf Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 887.4 Mn in 2023 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.1% over the forecast period 2023-2030.
The market in Asia Pacific dominates due to large production and consumption in India, the biggest producer. Increased use of bay leaves in traditional dishes and culinary experiments is driving the Indian market. Europe is the second largest consumer of bay leaves. Turkey is the major producer catering to the European demand. Changing lifestyle and experimentation with world cuisines is pushing the consumption of herbs and spices like bay leaves in various European countries. Key players operating in the bay leaf market are House of Spices (India) Inc., Mars Incorporated, Goya Foods, Olam International, McCormick & Company Incorporated, Frontier Natural Products Co-op Inc., Anatoli Spices, Pacific Spice Company Inc., Zizira, Alpina Organic Company, Mountain Rose Inc., The Spice Hunter Inc. Leading companies are expanding through organic and inorganic strategies to meet the growing demand.

🍒🍁 - for your favorite sim or OC! ♡
Oooh, I like these questions! I'm going to answer for all 4 of the O'Shaughnessy sibs ☺️ (grab a snack, this will be long lol!)
🍁 [MAPLE LEAF] What is your OC's favourite season? Why and what do they do during it?
Kathleen: She loves Fall in Brindleton Bay! She prefers cooler weather and loves the trees when they change colours. She loves curling up with a book and a cup of tea on the back porch ☕️ Owen: Winter! Sure, the Christmas market in Windenburg is beautiful, but he loves Winterfest the most. He gets to be with his sisters, friends and Isla - his favourite people. Caroline: Summers in San Myshuno are so fun! Sunday afternoons at the flea market, grabbing a drink at the rooftop lounge after work with her friends - she loves being around her people when the weather is warm! Elizabeth: Spring in Mt. Komorebi! Lizzy loves it when the Cherry blossoms bloom. After living in Del Sol Valley, being closer to nature has given her a lot of peace.
🍒 [CHERRY] Who is your OC's perfect companion?
Kathleen: Her fiancee Will! He is the reason she started to believe in love again Owen: His long-time girlfriend, Isla! Owen can be super rough around the edges - Isla not only softens him, but she encourages him to take better care of himself. Owen also loves his best friends, Nate Ballard and Ben Conley. Caroline: To be honest, she doesn't know. She really loved her ex - she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him! All it took was for him to say one thing that started the downfall of their relationship... For now, she's spending a lot more time with her friends. Elizabeth: She's still young, so she is still figuring out what healthy companionship looks like to her. All she knows is that she wants a partner who will ground her. Currently, she is leaning on her childhood best friend, Lily Weston for support as she begins her master's degree and teaches ballet.
This was so fun!! Thank youuu @lazyteapot :)

3. Are there other characters you’re interested in rping or wish to?
The characters I'm obsessing over now are all Tokyo Revengers muses (as you know, LOL), so I'm trying to write down little notes in gdocs when I get ideas. But yeah I think I just might end up playing everybody at this rate.
Maybe Tifa???? I always felt like she had so much untapped potential considering what she survived and went through, like it would make more sense if SHE was the MC of FF7 over Cloud if someone really hates Shinra and has actual personal beef against Sephiroth. I actually thought her Remake personality was pretty lame in that respect, like "but but but i durn wanna hurt ppl :/ uwuwuwu", given her history it would make TOTAL SENSE that she'd believe even Fuhito's book of crazy is the answer to the Planet's ills.
Her dynamic is Cloud is pretty weird and toxic as well, so I'd be open to like exploring that and just seeing where it goes and if they can somehow move beyond it or what??? I never really see people acknowledging it's a thing, it's like the elephant in the room that everyone ignores because then it gets in the way of their 5evur tru otp.
6. Other characters/muns you’re interested in roleplaying with?
I kinda want more crossovers or reasons to come up with new verses for Jae, I just like trying to shoehorn him into someone else's lore and see what happens, LOL.
And of course Verdot... There is just SO MUCH to unpack there.
18. Your muse’s theme song.
Toss up between Yuu Miyashita's cover of Kilmaa as his origin story & Gero's cover of SHANTI as his start of darkness.
21. Three big no-nos to do or say to your muse. (their ‘berserk button’)
Call him one or imply that he is coward.
Insult Verdot/his memory.
Bring up his sister and claim he is now 'the same' as the people who kept them captive (rest in fucking pieces, btw).
24. Send ✍ for the mun to take a crack at imitating your muse. Can be a small silly reply or a more in-depth take. ( Add + plus a scenario or who they’re talking to if you’d like to be more specific)
The streets always seemed to be empty during this hour of the day, the occasional beggar shaking a rice bowl for alms. It was to be expected, they were at war and even when the radio promised victory or death for the glory of Wutai, certain sacrifices had to be made. Three dried fish, 1.8 ounces of pork fat, a sweet potato plant taken from the vegetable fields converted from his elementary school's play yard- All to feed a family of four. If they needed more protein, they'd dig through the backyard to find beetle larvae and roast them with horsetail reed. Watery gruel made from rice day after day, soup broth made from boiled sardine and miso. That was their reality.
His mother took him to the black markets in search of sugar and he'd gawked at all of the items their government claimed to have outlawed- Fine bolts of silk, expensive inks and watercolors, luxury seasonal produce like watermelon. He never asked why or how they hadn't all been confiscated, grateful simply to know that such things still existed and were available- albeit at an inflated price.
Their homeroom teacher was arrested a week later for circulating illegal literature. He and his classmates watched from the bay windows as piles of handwritten and string-bound copies of censored material were burned to ash right in the PE field. His teacher had a rucksack placed over his head and was loaded into the back of a covered military wagon. Even after it had disappeared beyond the school gates, they could hear the rifle's gunshot crack across the sky.
One day, he found a cookbook that had belonged to his nai nai and spent most of his day leafing through it's pages, staring dreamily at glossy photos of pan-seared green beans, black bean sauce with kai lan and giant scallop, salted fish and mushroom stew cooked in a clay pot. It became almost ritualistic, reading each ingredient of every recipe and imagining the taste… the texture of each dish. He swore that he would sit down and eat at least one of his favorites picked from the back index- As soon as the war was over.
Once the war was over, everything would go back to normal.
