🪷 Recently Read Fics - January & February 2024 🪷
Hiii happy 2024 everyone! January was a bit of a busy month which meant I didn’t actually have the time to put together a fic rec for the first time in two years, but I am back! I still didn’t read as much as I usually do but, these are all of the amazing fics I read over the past two months (from shortest to longest). Don’t forget to leave kudos and comments to show the authors your appreciation if you read any of these! 🤍
🪷 Hold On I Still Need You by @enchantedlandcoffee (1k, T)
The one where Louis goes missing and Harry desperately tries to find him.
🪷 miles away from seeing you by @loveislarryislove (1k, T)
Harry is in his final year studying marine biology, and is doing an international exchange at the University of Auckland. His boyfriend Louis stays behind in England, but they keep in touch regularly through texts, snapchats, video calls, and more.
This fic is entirely told through images of social media posts and conversations
🪷 Daydream by @allwaswell16 (2k, T)
Every Thursday, Louis nods hello to her fellow regulars at Horan’s Cafe, one of whom is the woman of her dreams.
🪷 ‘cause i built a home for you by angelsueavenue (2k, NR)
Harry doesn’t believe that baths can induce labor. His alpha, though, is prepared to prove him wrong.
🪷 What’s in a Name by @hellolovers13 (2k, T)
Louis had always known Harry was his soulmate.
The name on his arm disagreed.
But what did his soulmark know about true love anyway.
🪷 In Jest by @londonfoginacup (4k, T)
Louis, who smiles at Harry as he reclines in his chair. Louis, whose soulmark is visible thanks to his low-cut top.
Louis, Harry’s soulmate, who seems to either be blissfully ignorant of that fact or maliciously ignoring it.
Harry would really like to know which.
🪷 You’re Already Home by @londonfoginacup (5k, G)
It's Christmas Eve and Harry's life is normal. Then he finds someone's barred the door to his favourite hiding spot -- the old groundskeeper's cottage -- and suddenly Harry's life isn't normal anymore.
🪷 knowing you’re in love with me is the greatest gift of all by @greeneyesfriedrice (6k, T)
Harry just wants to fall back to sleep in his husband’s arms, wanting to treasure the quietness of Christmas morning before their kids wake up and realize what day it is.
That dream is short lived when there’s a small shriek of joy from downstairs.
🪷 Cold Hands & Warm Hearts by kingofthefridaynight (16k, E)
a wintery uni au, where they spend time with their friends, play in the snow, drink wine in their dorm and Harry loses at Scrabble. Also, they might have been in love all along.
🪷 Your Eyes Outshine the Town by @insightfulinsomniac (19k, E)
When a freak French snowstorm traps Harry's family in Paris, he's suddenly left flying home for a Christmas spent alone. However, everything changes after a chance encounter with an undeniably attractive, generous alpha who suggests that Harry join his family's Christmas celebrations. Against his better judgment, Harry agrees, and follows Louis back to Doncaster for the holidays.
Little does he know, he'll not only become attached to the alpha, but to his entire family. Maybe his Christmas won't be as lonely as he expected.
Complete and utter fluff ensues. Sappy Christmas tropes abound.
🪷 To you I can admit, I’m just too soft for all of it by @starryhaze28 (28k, NR)
“Harry?” Louis asks when he hears the frantic crying coming through the speaker. “H, darling what's wrong?”
Concerned, Louis puts on his shoes as he keeps hearing the sobs. It’s the middle of the night and the phone call has definitely pulled Louis out of his deep slumber, but Harry is crying, and Louis has to be with him.
“It’ll be okay, baby, I'm gonna come over, okay? You just- Haz you have to send me your address, yeah? Can you do that for me?” Louis asks, trying to remain as poised as possible as he presses his phone between his ear and shoulder so he can grab his jacket.
“No.” Harry cries out. “It's all wrong, Lou- It’s-” Another sob. “I hate it, Lou, I hate it so, so much, make it stop.”
🪷 You’re Not My Type (still I fall) by @imogenleewriter (38k, M)
His mum is going to kill him!
Well, not kill him. Just give him a right telling off, make him admit she'd been right, then try to confine him to his room until they found a hefty Alpha to look after him and rein him in or something.
She wouldn't manage, of course. Harry is only twenty-four and has no inclination to settle down at all, especially not at the behest of an Alpha.
But, as his mum would point out, that was the same stubborn attitude that got him here: in his car, in a thunderstorm, on the side of a forsaken lane of some little countryside town in Yorkshire. His mobile's got no signal, his GPS isn't working, and he's running low on petrol, so he can't even use the heater.
Oh, and most importantly, his car is stuck in the mud, so even if the GPS was working and he knew where to go, he wouldn’t be able to.
He's been in stickier spots; he reminds himself. Way stickier. This is just a bit of rain; it'll blow over. Then Harry will just... well, alright, he isn't entirely sure what to do when the rain stops because he'll still be stuck and lost. But, hey, there won't be any rain, which is something to cheer about.

Life update time!
Because when else other than a Sunday morning drinking tea suits?
Life has been madness since we got back from Melbourne. Airnz cancelled our flights home so it took and extra 36 hours to get back, and we didn’t sleep for 24 of it since we had to go via Auckland. It was so bad. More jet lagged from that than when we went to America and came home after 5 weeks 😂😂😂 we were also lucky - we knew people who weren’t getting back until three days later. It was such chaos over there honestly
You can absolutely tell that travel demand is back to pre covid levels but all the services are not back up at the level they need to be. Yikes.
Melbs was awesome as per usual. We got to completely divorce reality for a good 8 days and just hang out together which was amazing and very needed after this year. Not that we’ve been struggling or anything but fuck I’ve missed Dave. There’s just been so much going on and moving home for two months was rough. Also we met all my cousins the first day we were there which was lovely and I had a fab discussion with my cousin who I haven’t seen since everything with dad. I was talking about how hard it was and she was like look, I spent last weekend crying over Eve So it doesn’t really stop you just build around it. Eve was her baby that was stillborn at 36 weeks and it was so heartbreaking for them. And it was nice just to know that like, yep, it’s Fkn miserable and that doesn’t change but life keeps happening because honestly, finding good grief resources is hard Fkn work and I’ve struggled with it this year.
We did all our usual (zoo, ikea, shopping, wandering) and just like chatting and talking and wandering through gardens and we went to the museum and it was so lush. Like what a Fkn gift of time and space we gave ourselves honestly. I loved it.
Got home from that entirely sleep deprived and mum called me in absolute tears less than 30 minutes after getting home. It was rough. I’m still exceptionally annoyed at the extended fam for having dropped the ball so Fkn badly. And I’m even more annoyed at my sister who took advantage of our absence and spent the week trying to get mum to move to Wellington which is more convenient for them but mum would absolutely hate tbh. So that was a rough reintroduction.
I went back to work the next day only to find out the utter SHIT my team had pulled in my absence and had to put two of them on formal performance management. It’s been a fucking nightmare.
And it basically hasn’t stopped since then. On the plus side, I’ve hired two new people who start tomorrow (yay!!!) so I’m off to Auckland to do induction with them. They’ll be super good value I think. I’m looking forward to it.
Life’s been a bit more settled with less travel up to whanganui and back. I had to laugh when I was talking to my the other day coz we were both like, I haven’t seen you in forever! It’s been five weeks but in the context of this year…. It’s the longest we’ve been apart since January? I think? It’s been good to be a bit of a homebody again because Dave and I are both just cooked at the end of this year. Both sleeping in til 10am on weekends without any effort just trying to play catch up. Just absolutely knackered. So it’s been nice to hang with each other again and just stay home.
An offer for mums house fell over this week so that’s been incredibly hard. We just need to get her off the block so she can actually move into the next phase of figuring out what life without dad looks like and it’s so hard to be physically unable to do that for her. I’m annoyed it’s not going to be this side of Christmas which is even more difficult but anyway. I was really hoping it wouldn’t carry over to the new year but sigh I guess it’s gunna. On the plus side, she’s volunteering at the foodbank again which gets her out of the house and around people and contributing meaningfully again so that’s been excellent.
Dave’s getting hammered with work at the moment but he’s doing ok I think. He never talks about missing dad or anything since he knows how much of mums load (and my own) I’m carrying but I’m not sure it’ll be good in the long run. Oh well.
I am going ok ish for the most part. I’m just so exhausted. I ended up extending my Christmas leave through til 10 Jan so have 2.5 weeks off which is excellent and needed. We’re not going anywhere and are just gunna chill at home and have a staycation. It’s going to be delightful.
I’ve been thinking about goals and stuff and how I want next year to play out. We were meant to start trying for kids this year which obviously didn’t happen so that’s probably still on the cards for next year. I think the thing I’m coming closer and closer to is just quitting social media and books and just trying to absolutely settle into my life and being where my feet are. After the last few years I think I just need to stop for a while and figure out what all these new parts of me are and how to integrate them and where I stand. It’s v confusing. I just want a quiet simple easy year filled with good friends and quality time with people and space for myself and sunshine and deliciousness and laughter and existence in its simplest form. I don’t want it to feel so effortful. I dunno. Fortunately I have a decent break to spend some time on it.
I was trying to explain it to Anne the other day and failed miserable. What would life look like if my inner world was so much more clear and certain? If I shored up all my reserves in myself and knew I was good enough to withstand it all? If i wasn’t so stuck on the whims and fancies of others? If they didn’t get to affect me so much? If I trusted myself so certainly that what other people said or did I would still be ok? If I had defined success for myself and what I wanted? Ugh I dunno. It’s a work in progress. And a lot of tangled thinking behind it. (Just a casual 12 years worth).
In other news, we’ve been thoroughly enjoying. Utopia on Netflix. Harry and Meghan on Netflix. Christmas movies. Michelle Obamas new book. No sugar Vanilla Coke. Almighty blood orange sparkling water. Evening walks to the river in the sunshine. Just being more active generally. Reconnecting with friends after a mad mad year. The prospect of a new year on the horizon and the hope that it can’t be any shittier than the year we’ve just lived through touch wood. Travelling for work again. Christmas shopping all being done. The fact meowser is still alive and mostly well and with us. Sunshine. Fresh starts. Some breathing room.
I know I’m gunna be ok.

South Korea to New Zealand via China
I take the brand new trainline to the airport.
Tumblr media
The train is full of information, almost an overload.
On TV screens close to the door of each carriage departure times of planes are displayed.
Then it’s time for news headlines, sports news and world weather forecasts.
The news tells me that Switzerland has leased a pier in the north east of North Korea; Seoul shares inch up on institutional gains.
The other stories deal with college tuition fees; military medical services; household debt; North Korean military intentions; and that South Korea is to develop an unmanned research ship.
The airport is big, but doesn’t feel overwhelming.
There is much thought given to the traveller and it’s almost a pleasure to be there.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I have no onward flight out of New Zealand, because I don’t need one.
The lady who is checking me in for China Southern Airlines tells me that I should have one.
She’s pretty nice about it. It’s an advisory, not a strict requirement on the part of New Zealand she tells me but I can’t check in without one.
A lady from Korean Air can sell me a refundable ticket for 1 million Won, about 680 Euro.
Instead I buy a flight online myself, from New Zealand to Australia for 100 Euro.
There are no newspapers on sale in the airport.
There isn’t even a bookshop, so I read the newspaper on the plane, the Global Times, a Chinese government sponsored newspaper.
It’s full of wacky, weird and wonderful stories.
There’s a picture of Colonel Gadaffi playing chess with the Head of The World Chess Federation, who claims that chess is a gift from outer space, he also claims to have been abducted by aliens.
There’s news of a new high speed rail line to connect Beijing and Shanghai which goes at 300km/h, with tickets priced at 555 Yuan, or you can go business class for 1,750 Yuan.
There are also 250km/h trains that’ll cost you 410 and 650 Yuan depending on your class.
They say there’ll be 63 pairs of trains running at 300km/h.
The article talks about the massive debts that the Ministry of Railways has incurred. A university professor is quoted talking about ‘air/rail intermodality projects’.
Another story deals with the 8,653km long natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China which cost $22Bn, which is designed to 'feed China’s growth’.
Other stories include two Siberian tigers that are due to give birth in China; flooding in Hunan; the latest on Syria and Yemen; baby trafficking; bribery and corruption; financing of a 'shadow internet’ by the US.
The business pages deal with Chinese GDP, money supply, the CPI, and IPO’s; the growth of luxury spending in China, the fact that Louis Vuitton opened 27 shops in 22 Chinese cities in two years.
The United States is warned to stay out of any regional disputes that China may have with Vietnam and The Philippines.
'It would not be a wise move’ for the US to get involved.
Events to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party take up a full page.
I get the feeling that this story is only covered because they feel they have to, it’s all very low key.
When we land in Guangzhou there is powerful humidity in the air.
We’re so far from the airport that we have to board a small bus to bring us to the terminal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the likewise pasty foreigners who are just transiting through China are put aside and our passports taken away.
An official appears 20 minutes later with a stack of passports.
She tries to give passports back to people based on their passport pictures, it’s all a bit hopeless.
She doesn’t believe that I’m the same person as the person in the photo on my passport.
Eventually she gives me my passport.
I have about 7 hours to wait until my connecting flight to Auckland.

The New Zealand Silver Fern Brooch
For the Cambridges’ 2014 visit to New Zealand, the Queen loaned Kate this silver fern brooch. The diamond and platinum brooch, a gift from the women of Auckland, was presented to the Queen on Christmas Day 1953 during her visit to the nation. Kate wore the brooch as she (and baby Prince George) stepped off the plane in Wellington.

The Beginning of BuzzyBee — a Treasure Brand Born with Love and Hope in 1930
The Beginning of BuzzyBee — a Treasure Brand Born with Love and Hope in 1930
*This article was first released on Medium, in the account of Sutherland.
https://medium.com/@Sutherland_CN/70659ed3c3ae
The beginning was anything but a happy one.
Smoke floats around the battlefield, the soldier breathed harshly while blood leaking from the wound on his face. The eyes locked on the ground, with his body in a low position forced by the barrage from machine guns. The land, soaked by the blood, was full of his fellows which he had to jump across. And the explosion of a bomb was the last thing he saw.
Tumblr media
The WWI brought suffer to the globe, including New Zealand. The country was then stricken again by the Great Depression, made the local people sink in despair.
In the dust of anguish, Buzzy Bee extended the wings of hope.
While sorrow swept over region, a diligent craftsman in a small workshop was able to kept optimism. With his smart hands and pure kindness, he made a living in Auckland.
The gentleman was Maurice Schlesinger, the very first creator of Buzzy Bee. In order to bring happiness and safety back to children, he used the image of cute bees in his hometown, and then  via his company Playcraft Products fashioned the very first Buzzy Bee, which is similar in most respects to the Buzzy Bee children enjoy today.
Tumblr media
Good things did not last forever. Several years after the emerge of the first Buzzy Bee, WWII broke out. All New Zealanders were all involved in the disaster.
Mans grabbed weapons and returned to battlefields, with children left at home. However, before leaving, many fathers bought Buzzy Bee as gifts to the kids to provide company instead. As a result, Buzzy Bee also stands for a tough fighter with temperance.
In the early 1940's Mr. Schlesinger became very ill with spinal meningitis and was forced to close his workshop. However such was the appeal of the Buzzy Bee as a toy that Hec Ramsey, a traveling sales man who was an agent for C L Stevensons took the Buzzy Bee to his brother's wood turning business in New Lynn.
The WWII ended in 1947, and New Zealand finally embraced a booming economy. The postwar baby boom and import restrictions saw yearly sales of Buzzy Bee™ increase rapidly. In the following years, the ownership of the brand underwent several changes and eventually became a national treasure brand supporting the New Zealand toy industry. Through the help of many kind people, Buzzy Bee now spread its branches all over the world.
Now in the face of new challenges and opportunities, Buzzy Bee decided to keep pace with the times. Suzerland is officially authorized for launching Buzzy Bee's digital branding assets.Together with its strategic partner FoxNFT.io, they are going to bring a fabulous show to the globe.
With high potential in the future, FoxNFT.io has already become a pioneer in digital branding asset.Besides basic NFT mint, storage, lauching, and transaction, FoxNFT.io can deeply link with the brand and provide a full range of NFT empowerment in finance, game and for collection.  Under the joint promotion of Sutherland and FoxNFT.io, Buzzy Bee, which has been born after the war, is bound to shine and become a good start for the establishment of global digital branding assets.

Elisabeth Sinclair • 40 • Female (she/her) • Metahuman • Tempestakinesis • C.A.R.M.A • Commander
BIOGRAPHY
Born the eldest of two in Auckland, New Zealand to a French-Māori couple, Elisabeth was the miracle baby her parents desperately prayed for and paved the way for her baby brother to be born a few years later. As her parents doted on her so she doted on her brother Rhett, and from the beginning they were there for one another. When Elisabeth’s powers began to manifest, unknown to their parents at the time, and struck Rhett he was the one lending support as Ellie figured out the healing capabilities of electricity. And though their parents eventually found out he helped keep her Electrokinesis as secret as long as they could — it was inevitable, when their maternal grandmother had been a powerful Atmokinetic and respected elder among the Māori before her passing shortly before Elisabeth’s birth.
It was nothing to do in regards to her abilities that had Elisabeth needing her brother, and her family really, the most, but problem with a boy. She was in her last semester of high school with plans to join the United States Air Force and work toward a university degree when she got mixed up with a boy and ended up pregnant. And then there were the complications that, even though she successfully delivered a healthy baby girl, would prevent her from having another child. Through it all her family supported her with her brother being her biggest cheerleader of all, despite pursuing his own interests. And through it all, through graduating university and climbing ranks within the Air Force and raising her daughter, Elisabeth kept her gift of electricity a secret.
Until she was approached by a group seeking to start up a fledgling government-backed organization dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of Metahumans. They needed one more member for the Board of Directors, and someone they trusted to be hands on in a directing position at what would be the main headquarters in Pansaw, California. The freeing knowledge that the group already knew of her Metahuman abilities helped her make her decision, as did constant encouragement from her brother and her daughter. After all, what better way to help Metahumans than to help form and lead what would eventually become an worldwide organization within all first world governments — while maintaining the secrecy of her own genetics within her family and the Board of Directors? A Metahuman able to advocate for others who were just like she had once been was just what the young C.A.R.M.A. needed.
This vision proved difficult to maintain, as corruption began to take root early on and the ideals of not just her fellow commanding officers but even the newest of agents began to twist C.A.R.M.A.’s mission over the years. Everything came to a head with the events leading up to and surrounding the extremist Nephilim’s attack on the city at C.A.R.M.A.’s weakest point. It was thanks to Dr. Quinn Parker’s mass-produced meta steroid, and the formed alliance between C.A.R.M.A., the Rebel Army, and and the vigilante Hero Squad that saved Pansaw and defeated the Nephilim. With the truth of her powers now revealed, Elisabeth took control of C.A.R.M.A. with the full support of the rest of the Board of Directors and began to root out the deep corruption within the organization and slowly clean up its reputation.
Dr. Parker’s meta steroid had more of a lasting affect on Elisabeth and her powers than either the scientist or the newly appointed Commander anticipated, in that Elisabeth soon found her abilities expanding and growing even more powerful and akin to the abilities her grandmother posessed before her. As she began to really dig in deep and get her hands dirty in order to finally reform C.A.R.M.A. back to what she and the Board originally envisioned Elisabeth found herself learning more about her new and growing powers and retraining her control over them. A few years later now and though there is still a long way to go, both for C.A.R.MA. and for herself, Ellie is determined to keep going full speed ahead.
POWERS
TEMPESTAKINESIS: Elisabeth can sense, create, shape and manipulate storms — including but not limited to strong winds, hail, thunder and lightning and thunderstorms in general, heavy precipitation such as rainstorms or snowstorms, heavy freezing rain such as icestorms, strong winds like hurricanes, cyclones and tornadoes, or wind that is transporting substances through the air like in a dust storm, blizzard, sandstorm, etc.
WEAKNESSES
Users with Storm Negation can negate Elisabeth’s abilities. The necessary elements such as enough heat and moisture present make it easier to create proper storm conditions.  Distance, the amount of matter and precision of ability depend upon Elisabeth’s strength and skill.  She cannot generate storms if already exhausted, she is limited only to manipulating what is existing or what has already been created.  Air manipulation is ineffective in a vacuum, as atmosphere must be present.  Elisabeth can be forced out of her storm form by individuals with Storm Negation or ability-negating powers.  With the exception of Electrokinesis, all other aspects of Elisabeth’s power are still relatively new to her and have not yet been mastered.

This Sunday Currently, vol. 15
Tumblr media
First TSC of 2020, who would’ve thunk.
Reading
Right now, I’m reading Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s Someone Who Will Love You In All Your Damaged Glory. So far, this is my fourth book for the month and ninth overall for the year, which is to say I am thriving quite nicely in the reading department. I have to say, I’ve never had such a good reading streak in a long time because all of these books I’ve spent reading these last couple of months have left such a strong impression on me, and without giving away too much, here are some reasons why I loved all of them:
1. N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy — Absolutely well-written, impressive worldbuilding and character development. The attention to detail that Jemisin gave in creating this world of the Stillness and the elements of orogeny is so, so good. Also, I really appreciate the way she established the relationships of her female characters that even though they had their differences and an almost cutthroat dynamic (like with Essun and Ykka, or with Essun and Tonkee), there is still that sense of solidarity present between these women, that they didn’t really seek out to upstage the other despite them being exceptionally skilled in their fields of expertise, but instead they worked together and acknowledged each other’s strengths, which I very much dig a lot.
2. Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine — The story follows Eleanor Oliphant, an eccentric, friendless 29-year-old working in a boring day job who meets this kind-hearted IT guy named Raymond. At first, I thought it was another romance novel but I just loved how it has completely thrown me off because it mainly revolves around Eleanor’s growth and her friendship with Raymond, and how this eventually helps her to open up to other people—which is, like, this is the kind of story that is so hard to come across because it focuses on platonic relationships and how that is so important, too. And like? That’s my fucking jam?
3. Jenny Slate’s Little Weirds — Jenny Slate captures the entire experience of loneliness and heartbreak and love in her own whimsical way and crafts this beautifully written collection of stories and essays that I was emotionally wrecked after reading all of it.
4. André Aciman’s Find Me — My god. Aciman chronicles love and longing with such visceral and detailed prowess. Reading the stories of Sami, Elio, and Oliver in this sequel fucking murdered me. And that’s putting it mildly.
5. Mary Oliver’s Thirst — This is the kind of poetry collection that after reading it, I felt compelled to move to the countryside and live in the forest.
Also, my favourite has got to be The Uses of Sorrow, in which Mary says: “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness / It took me years to understand that this, too was a gift.”
6. Sally Rooney’s Normal People — There is a certain kind of sadness that follows the story of Connell and Marianne, and one thing I really liked about this is how Rooney managed to capture the complexities of on and off relationships with such forensic attentiveness. And it’s so nice to read the story alternating in Connell’s and Marianne’s POVs, too, so one gets to understand what goes on in their heads.
Writing
Because I’ve been busily reading and watching films these days and MMA training most weeknights after work, I haven’t been writing much, except maybe for adding little notes and dialogues and carving the structure for A Burden We Share. Honestly, I don’t even know if I’ll ever get to write it considering how I’ve ultimately decided not to continue updating Laws of Motion. And I’m not even in the least sorry about it. I’m struggling in a very weird writing limbo (despite managing to put this out lmao) and maybe because the interest has petered out, or the fact that I’m an exhausted reader/spectator of my own stuff, or I am an exhausted mother of many different OCs and they all demand 1000000% of my care and devotion like the needy children that they are and they want me to talk about them all the fucking time, which I find so difficult to do at times despite the kind and generous asks, because talking about them makes me feel so selfish and self-absorbed sometimes like I’m imposing a lot like no one really likes to hear about them so shut up self, don’t you have anything better to talk about sis? and maybe this is my anxiety screaming and also demanding my attention, so idk. So maybe it’s all three, I guess.
Anyway. Basically, I’m sort of gliding through this break (is it still a break when you’re not planning to write at all?) or whatever this is called because for now, I have no plans on posting anything new anytime soon.
Watching
Tumblr media
I watched Jojo Rabbit and Parasite last month but then watched it again yesterday because a friend gave me a copy. Parasite easily became one of my favourite movies ever because it’s such a fucking masterpiece and it left me thinking about a lot of things after watching it.
Also, rewatching some of my favourite sad, tearjerker movies is what I’ve been doing these days, like Beautiful Boy, The Lovely Bones, and Lion, all of which never fails to make me cry like a baby.
Listening
A lot of new music, thank fuck! My constant work companions these days are Halsey’s Manic, Mura Masa’s R.Y.C., Bombay Bicycle Club’s Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, Hayley William’s Petals for Armor EP. And, well, I still listen to Hozier from time to time. As a treat.
Smelling
Monday dread, as always.
Feeling
Equal parts excited and nervous, forcing myself to let this positive feeling tide over the frustration of my writing dilemma. I’m leaving for a camping trip in two weeks, and then off to Sydney and Auckland in April, and while I’m looking forward to getting out of the city, the entire planning part is what drives me nuts. And with everyone still on alert because of N-COV, our airports are a mess and thinking about the stress of it all makes me so anxious I just want to stay at home instead.
Hoping/Wishing/Needing/Wanting
I love writing, I seriously do, so I want my writing motivation back. I’ve been giving it to myself on my own, and I think I might have misplaced it somewhere.
The Sunday Currently was originally from SiddaThornton.

FOREVER ISN’T FOR EVERYONE (IS FOREVER FOR YOU?) part 2
Lucy and I are up before the sun. I've called a cab and manage to grab a banana from the complementary breakfast. Most of the team's still asleep.
"Fucking techies," Ben mutters, rubbing at his eyes from behind his sunnies, "get to sleep while I do all the work.” He'd stayed out with the rest of the band all night. Who knows they'd gotten back in. And now we had actual work to do.
"Just you," Lucy replies archly.
"You two weren't out until three in the morning. At least I got a nice shag out of the whole thing."
"TMI Ben!" It's too early for this. But the whole city is too beautiful too miss. New Zealand. I have too at least make it to the beach once during these few days we have here before heading to Auckland. Maybe even make it to hobbit town.
"It's true. I hate dealing with the business side. I just signed on to party and travel."
"Where did you guys even go?”
"A bunch of bars. Got some late night eats." He shrugs, looking way too relaxed in jeans and a t shirt. But maybe I was the one out of place in slacks and a silk cami. I just couldn't get my head around doing business in jeans. "You should've come with us Ellie. We missed you last night."
"I prefer not feeling like shit two days in a row actually."
Lucy snorts, "oh you're perfect. You'll do great out here with us."
There's complimentary coffee and I make sure to pour as much creamer as I can into the cup. Ben and the venue manager talk, go over some last minute papers. He passes them to me and I read them and nod, passing them back. They're the same as I have in my files.
Ben signs off and then they're joking and bantering and I want to stab my eye out. Lucy's gone to go over the press list and signing off on the state of backstage. It's not a huge venue. Nothing like the O2 back home. But the size does give everyone a better look at the stage, probably without selling a kidney for it.
We're done, having taken longer than we planned. We have to race back to meet up with band to do press. Fuck. Our taxi gets caught up in traffic.
"How's there even enough cars for there to be traffic," Lucy complains. She doesn't trust the band to speak without her there to do damage control.
"Fuck it. We're just meeting them at the radio station. Then we can head to hotel and do the rest of the day's press in there." He sends a text. "Can you send a taxi for them Ellie?"
"Got it." At some point I've got to get lunch. A banana and coffee isn't enough to hold me over.
We barely make it in time and I run off to get them all breakfast while they do their radio interview for the morning. Without specifics I'm left with a bit of time to wander about and find someplace to eat.
The air feels fresher. Everything has a rose colored cast from it's newness to me. Even I feel lighter without the weight of being known here. Like I could change and be the person I wanted to away from home. In this new place.
There's a restaurant a street over and the coziness amid the skyscrapers catch my eye. It's homey and welcoming and it smells amazing. I order a couple of their breakfast specials and lunch sandwiches, taking one for myself as the kitchen preps the rest.
"Large family," the waitress asks.
I shake my head, "for work actually. I went to school for years to be a glorified assistant." It's funny. I did. But this job, it felt right, even now.
"That's what my son keeps telling me."
The foods great. I sip at some tea and wait to be called back. Content to use to wifi. After we get back to the hotel, where some of the crew are setting up for the press, and with the help of the first interviewers of the day, I'll finally have some free time.
Go walk about the beach. Oriental bay is supposed to be beautiful. And close by.
Ben texts me and I met up with them at the curb, carrying a large bag of takeout, "It's good," I promise.
"You ate without us," Miles accuses, all boyish naughtiness, clad in a wife beater and trackies.
"Down old boy," Lucy says, slapping his chest. Nick laughs, taking a box eagerly as Ben hails us a cab, of which there are plenty in this part of the city.
"Do we really have press all day," Jaime groans.
"Bet you didn't think of that when you wanted more people to hear you play," Ben notes with a mouthful of sandwich.
Miles shimmies, features twisted in delightful amusement, "fame's half the reason I joined a band. Who doesn't want to be a fmaous rockstar. Sex. Drugs, and rock n roll baby."
"You look more like the fifth Beatle than Mick Jagger," I note as we pile into a cab. His hair's certainly Beatlesque. He's also got the boyish charm down, however rakish.
"Oi!"
Lucy and Ben shepherd the boys to another interview, with promises of partying and beaches later on our last full day before the concert here.
I wave them off and head up to our room to change out of slacks. I'd been right, I'd been overdressed. And the heat only made it worse.
By the time I change into some shorts, I feel to tired to go out and sigh see, figuring tonight I'll actually go out with the rest of the crew. It'd be more fun that way. Instead of alone.
Instead I head down to the lobby with a bag and book and head out to wander the area at least. There's some fast food, the names I know, Mcdonalds and Domino's, and some obvious tourist traps that I go into.
My family and roommates will at least want a mug. For the first time, I use my own card to buy some souvenirs, opting for keychains to save space. I wander into some of the regular shops to kill time.
All the stores nearby have a striking similarity to the ones back home. But the architecture's all different.
My phone is soon full of pictures of streets and buildings and me wearing a New Zealand hat, before I give in and get Mcdonalds, heading back to the hotel, ready to curl up in the beautiful lobby with the book I've lugged all the way from home.
The air conditioning is a gift. The couch by the indoor fountain perfect and I try to focus on reading Anna Karenina. It's been nagging me since uni. But I've never managed to get through it.
So many beautiful quotes out there and I can't ever finish a book.
I almost drop my book as Lucy startles me, taking a seat next to me. "Want to grab lunch by the beach? I mean dinner really but either way?"
"And the boys?"She rolls her watery eyes, the color of fog bound sky, "up to change before having margaritas by the pool. I think they're going out bar hopping again later if you're up for it."
I shrug, "let's see how we feel after wandering about." It's a long walk, but how else will we get to see everything.
Lucy makes me take a pictures of her against various backdrops. "Make sure you get that building!" She poses. "Wait, over here!" She fixes her hair, back and out of her eyes, "Wait! I think I closed my eyes in that one."
I laugh, willingly taking photo after photo and waiting for her to check them, swiping and zooming in to make sure she likes how it came out.
"Thank you so much Ellie!"
"It's really no problem."As we get to the beach we duck into the first place that smells good and has a line.
"First rule of traveling," Lucy grins. "Follow your nose."
It's not half bad. Fish and chips. The fish claiming to be fresh from the day's catch. A perfect dinner.
Lucy tells me about her last job. "A smaller band, mostly big in europe. I think breaking out into the world's the hardest part. So many bands flounder in the states and unfortunately it's a huge market setter."
"Did you always want to do this kind of PR?"
"No. But who could refuse traveling! Especially compared to a desk job."
We each pay for our food and head down to the water. The water too inviting to refuse, both of us wading in.
"It's warm," we both squeal, use to the icy waters of England.
"It's probably easier to deal with them though."
Lucy's eyebrows rise as she snorts, "you'd be surprised at how crazy things in the boardroom can get!"
We go in past our knees. Yelping as the waves splash, breaking against us. "My underwears soaked," I admit, blushing fiercely. The wet feeling making me want to go running into the water or for a change of clothes.
"Didn't you say we were just dipping our feet in?"
We laugh.
The groupchat goes off and we glance at each other, before heading back out of the water. We read over the texts with the sun setting on the water. "This place is paradise," I tell her. Its warm and by the beach and so green.
"Oh and we've barely even started. Ben told me you didn't even have a passport?"
I blush. "Yes. I'd only ever been up as far as Scotland." It had been the first and only time I had met my mother's parents. Her family. And despite how it ended, it was a lovely time in the highlands.
Lucy laughs, scrolling through the messages. "Ben and the rest are heading out to drink up on Cuba street. 'cept for Miles and Alex. They want to go catch some film at a quaint little theater."
"What movie?"
"The Red Shoes. There'll be food and drinks there too." We trudge through the sand and peddles and reach the sidewalk. This time we hail a cab.
"How's Cuba street," I ask. She's travelled before. Probably been here with a different band. A different crew. Older than me, lines around her eyes.
"I mean it's cool," she offers, "but mostly pubs and-it's very much Camden town than Shoreditch."
"A movie sounds nice after all the walking. Maybe along with a nice glass of wine."
"I'll tell Miles we'll be over then," she says, looking up with a smile. It's great to have her here, to get along with her so easily. I'd been nervous before, never having made friends easily in school. Just my dorm mates and whoever I ended up sitting near in class.
"And I'll tell the cab where to."
Miles and Alex are waiting for us outside when we pull up. Even illuminated by dim streetlights, it's easy too see how pretty Alex is, his face now sans aviators and with a good night's sleep.
Large and expressive caramel eyes, a softness to his sharp jaw, and a well formed mouth. It helped that he was a good mood, joking with Miles.
"-and I said fuck that mate and drained the whole thing. Burned to bloody hell and back though!"
"Just can't beat an englishman!"
Lucy rolls her eyes, "boys will be boys."
"Ah my dear sweet Lucy who pelts me with candy as I mouth off! Reminds me of me history teacher," Miles winks exaggeratedly. "This is me mate Alex ," he clasps him on the shoulder, pulling him into his embrace, "Alex. This is Lucy and Ellie who I know you already met but."
"Speaking of which," I note, aware of the sand still stuck to my legs and the drying hem of my shorts, "you owe me a drink."
"Oi! What a woman! Hell El, gotta at least wait until we sit down or you might be what we call the local old dog who spends all his days in the back booths of pubs." His voice is all over the place as he twirls an imaginary mustache and it's a combination of it all and him being him that has us all laughing at his antics.
We order chips and a bottle of wine, "to keep it classy," Miles winks, and take our seats in the tiny theater.
Alex takes the seat between me and Miles, attention dominated by the other man. All the better for me to sneak glances off and it's stupid but I already feel my heart speed up at the sight of him like I'm a teenager all over again.
"Any if you seen this movie before," Lucy asks conversationally.
" 've not but then again i'm not the most cultured," Miles does a very bad accent as he continues, "je ne sais quoi."
"The french give us films and Serge Gainsbourg and this is how you pay them back," Alex teases, smacking Miles lightly in the arm. I chuckle at that, watching Miles go all mock affronted and tease Alex right back.
"Is it anything like that old fairy tale?" I can vaguely recall something about cursed red shoes, but the twelve dancing princesses was the story I asked for night after night to my mums despair.
Alex nods, with a delighted smile on his lips, "loosely. It's great. I think you'll like a lot."
The lights dim and the screen flickers on. I sit back and watch, glass of wine in hand feeling like I'm finally living that life that doesn't really exist, the moments that come straight of of films like this one.
Alex is right. I do like the film.
Its beautiful and I'm not bored at any point. I can here Miles making quite snide comments and am not surprised.
"It was good," Lucy remarks after as we head out, "very black swan."
"Wouldn't black swan be like this film since it came out before?" I utter.
"She's got you there Lucy darling," Miles snipes. "Who's up for some drinks! The rest of the boys are still out and about and I've got a bloody mary calling my name."
He glances at Alex for a second before erupting into laughter that has Alex smiling as well. Must be an inside joke of there's.
"Are you two coming," Alex asks, meeting my gaze.
I shake my head. If I wake up early enough tomorrow I could probably squeeze in a trip to hobbit town and back before I had to run anywhere.
I tell him as much. "Mums a huge Tolkien nerd, so I kind of have to."
Alex nods in understanding, "I've never cared for Tolkien. 've always preferred science fiction. Going way back to good ol Mary."
It take me a second for it to click. Mary Shelley. As in Frankenstein. "Never read it."
"You should. It's a great little book."
Miles snorts, "just watch the movie with the willy wonka fella!"
Alex rolls his eyes fondly.
We hail a cab and part ways.
Lucy boldly proclaiming she intends to get a good nights sleep and still look "banging in my fourties."
"Ya that old Lucy darling," Miles snorts, unable to help himself.
"Don'tcha know never to ask a lady her age Kane," Lucy calls out as the cab pulls away and I'm giggling, carefree. No one here knows me. I feel unabashed, making a scene and taking cabs about town.
"So that Alex is right fit," Lucy states with a knowing smile as she plays the spice girls loudly in our room, handing me more wine. I blush and think I must've drunk way more than I though I did. He is! And I don't know what to do with that.
So I shrug and reply, "I guess," to her very unconvinced face. With ease, a down another glass of wine, shamelessly crying out spice girls lyrics.
I might as well be thirteen again.
