I'm doing everything in my power not to buy this set, because it's stupid when I have the dvds, but the BFI have a done an astonishing job on cleaning up the Ghost Stories for Christmas, so if you've ever been tempted by them this is the set to invest in

NEW PROJECT announced for Alexander Skarsgård to star and executive produce "Pillion"
via Variety (5.8.24):
Alexander Skarsgard (“The Northman,” “Succession”) and Harry Melling (“The Pale Blue Eye,” “The Queen’s Gambit”) are set to lead the cast of “Pillion,” described as a “fun and filthy romance with heart” and being produced by multi-Oscar-winning powerhouse Element Pictures.
The film — to be launched in Cannes by Cornerstone, which is handling worldwide sales — marks the feature debut of Harry Lighton, whose short “Wren Boys” was nominated for best British short at the 2018 BAFTAs, was nominated for a BIFA and had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Pillion” follows Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower letting life pass him by. That is until Ray (Skarsgård), the impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, takes him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life, introducing him to a community of kinky, queer bikers and taking all sorts of virginities along the way. But as Colin steps deeper into Ray’s world of rules and mysteries, he begins to question whether the life of a 24/7 submissive is for him. Has he found his calling, or simply swapped one form of suffocation for another?
The film — set to shoot in the U.K. this summer — is an Element Pictures production financed by BBC Film, Picturehouse Entertainment and September Films, who will handle distribution in the U.K. and Benelux respectively. The BFI is also supporting the film. The screenplay was developed with BBC Film and is based on Adam Mars-Jones’ “Box Hill” which was the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize winner. Element Pictures’ Emma Norton, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe will produce together with Lee Groombridge. BBC Film’s Eva Yates, Claire Binns for Picturehouse, September Films’ Pim Hermeling and Skarsgård are executive producers. Louise Ortega is the BFI’s executive for the project. Heads of department include cinematographer Nick Morris (“Wren Boys”), production designer Francesca Massariol (“The Strays”), BIFA Award winning costume designer Grace Snell (“The Souvenir”), BIFA Award nominated composer Oliver Coates (“Aftersun”) and casting director Kahleen Crawford (“Lost Daughter”).
“Everyone at Element is so excited to help Harry Lighton bring ‘Pillion’ to life,” said Norton. “Harry is a filmmaker who is drawn to risk and fascinated by the  potential to find surprising complexity in everyday life. We love this about him and believe that ‘Pillion’ is the perfect expression of his talent, bravery and ambition.”
Added Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder; “Harry’s script is equally compelling and shocking as it is funny and entertaining – and one of the best we’ve read in years. The casting is inspired and we are thrilled to unleash this brilliant project in the Cannes market.”

DAY 5614
Jalsa, Mumbai                     July 1/2,  2023                  Sat/Sun 11:57 PM
🪔 .. July 02 .. birthday greetings to .. Ef Ef Madhuri Dharanipragada .. Ef Sanjay Patodiya from Kolkata .. Ef Jayesh Brahmbhatt from Gujarat ..
And .. dear Avni Rathi , the CONQUEROR from Solapur .. your birthday was on May 22 , and we regret missing it , because we didn't know , but now we know .. you have our wishes and affection always and of all the Ef Family .. keep conquering 💪🏽 .. love ❤️ ..
..
And .. wishes for the Amar Akbar Anthony Film screening tomorrow Sunday 2nd July at BFI ( the British Film Institute .. UK’s lead organization for Film ) under the brand ICONIC ..
Tumblr media
never ever thought that this film would be seeing a day like this .. but the genius of Manmohan Desai had other ideas .. his first Production under his banner .. and what a complete joy to be a part of it ..
Much has changed since then .. but this lives on .. as do most others ..
And the debates on AI continue .. many have reacted to the informal mention on this page and have commented on its veracity and its drawbacks .. society, morals, defence, secret services .. the list is endless .. and we move on ..
Anxious now how the morning papers shall portray this bit of the Blog .. 😁
Autobiography .. !!!
Many do insist that it must come from me .. and it amuses me .. I have nothing autobiographical about me .. Babuji did , and his, in 4 volumes, became iconic and ably rewarded .. the best reaction coming from the pundits of literature and the literary world that ..
“ your prose is better than your poetry” !!
Then on set I came across a book being used as a prop that volumed various quotes on various topics .. and on ‘autobiography’ this came up :
‘An autobiography is an obituary in serial form with the last instalment missing.’ ~ Quentin Crisp 1908 - 99 The Naked Civil Servant ( 1968 )
for some strange reason the book on set .. had its title covered with paper that read  Bonsai Plants ..
Bonsai represents miniature .. I guess minimalistic for a book on quotes was an apt thought .. he haha ..😂
There were many more .. but I refrain .. that strain, brings pain .. for the ability of the copywriter to make it in sensationalist headlines would be compromised ! 😳
Ahh heh .. I be too naughty in my write .. disruptuous , mutinous , recalcitrant  .. but then the liberty of express , plays uniformly , does it not  .. especially for the 1.4 + billion .. ypj’s
be in good stead dear readers and writers .. the path to the glory hath been disrupted by the diversionary lanes to the ultimate destination ..
So was I able to make this readable in compete with the morrow HL  ..
Love and regard as always ..

Preorders for THBU Zine and 77 Years Zine go back on pre-order tomorrow!
But what WAS the 77 Years Zine? Well… 🧵
It all started in early 2022, when Mod Kat had the idea to make a zine about the Master’s exile on Earth. This was too big of a project for one, so she found…
Mod Em, famed Thoschei fandom cryptid and Social Media Guy, and—
Mod Dev, literal pug and graphic design whiz. 💜
The three of them found the best and brightest of the Doctor Who fandom’s writers and artists for the project, including the amazing @wykart who designed this stunning cover art!
Tumblr media
Through several months of Intensive Project Wrangling, the intrepid mods and contributors managed to get every fic and piece of art written, drawn, edited, tidied up, and compiled into a gorgeous book, complete with production notes from the Master himself in the special edition!
The zine chronicled the Master’s journey around the Earth- from America to Russia to the UK and back to Russia again, and it was illustrated with fashion magazine-style pictures of the Master in era-accurate styles ✨
There was also an audiobook edition, compiled by Mod Kat- here’s an exclusive behind the scenes look at the editing process for it: 👀
Tumblr media
Then it was time to promote the zine! Throughout the preorder period, Mod Kat braved the wilds of Cardiff to photograph the zine in random places, and Mod Em relentlessly ensured that no one on dwtwt could forget that there was a zine out!
Tumblr media
Mod Kat even made a mini zine, which made it to the BFI, the shelves of Waterstones, and the very proud hands of both Mods Em and Kat 💜💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After months of effort, the zines finally shipped, with these gorgeous extras and packaging. They went around the world, with well over a hundred physical copies sold!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They even got a special thank you from Sacha Dhawan himself, thanks to then-contributor and now-Mod Nat finding him at a con to hand over a copy for him to keep. In the end, they donated £1083.78 to Crohn’s and Colitis UK, a charity supported by Sacha!!
Tumblr media
Shortly after that, they started working on the next zine, and the rest, as they say, is History… 💜💙

David Tennant's Obscure Performances: Sweetnightgoodheart and its time traveling release date(s)
Heya all you David Tennant fans! I'm back with a small thread about a 2001 short film which David starred in called Sweetnightgoodheart (hereafter called SNGH).
Tumblr media
SNGH was 9:16 in length. It was written and directed by Dan Zeff and produced by Litmus Productions in association with Bliss.com films for BBC Films. Its original title was Sweetnight Goodheart (with the two words separated) but somewhere along the way, the words were connected.
More about the title, this time from the BFI: "This entertaining short film takes a lighthearted look at the anxiety of modern relationships. The mix up of the title - a play on the familiar WWII song 'Goodnight Sweetheart' - highlights the confusion and miscommunication that is the film's premise."
Tumblr media
Now, although I just said it was released in 2001.....if you look at the IMDb entry above very closely, I'm sure you've noticed it says 2005.
This, my friends, is wrong. And I'm about to prove it.
According to the British Film Institute, SNGH was one of the short films which made its premiere in August of 2001 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It was a nominee for Short Films. It also screened at the 45th Regus London Film Festival as part of their Urbania Shorts slot in November of 2001, and was a nominee for Short Cuts & Animation.
Tumblr media
Sooooo.....unless David and everyone involved with the project are all time travelers and they somehow filmed the short in 2005 but took it back to 2001 to show at the festivals?....well, you get the picture.
After SNGH's premiere at the two festivals, it was sold to HBO and Cinemax. It was broadcast in the USA (and yes, you read that right!) on Cinemax beginning in August of 2002. It was shown every couple of months or so until July of 2004. It was first aired on HBO beginning in March of 2003 and was broadcast intermittently until June of 2004. Judging by the broadcast listings, it appears both networks used it as short "filler" material in between their full-length movie offerings. And after those two stopped airing it, PBS in the USA then aired it as part of its Imagemakers series in September of 2005. Here are some newspaper blurbs (with the newpaper titles and dates above them) to prove these broadcasts occurred:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further proof? On Valentine's Day of 2009, the BFI screened SNGH with its other main features. That screening's entry for the short also says it was released in 2001.
Tumblr media
I wanted to find out why IMDb would say 2005, so I poked around a bit. Oddly, its release date information specifies "Hungary" (okaaay?), while sources elsewhere have the 2005 date noted as the date of its "world premiere". The Hungary release date might well be accurate, but I'm not sure exactly what world premiere means...besides, it's obviously an error (since we've already shown it aired in the US in 2002 through 2004). So I think we can safely cross out 2005, don't you?
But ohhhh, we're not yet done on the dates, because some sources also give a release date of 2003! This date, however, is much easier to explain. The 2003 date originates from its initial broadcast on BBC2. It aired as a part of a 50-minute program called Ways To Leave Your Lover (hereafter called WTLYL) at 11:20 pm on 25 March 2003. WTLYL featured five 10-minute short films with a common thread - the end of love. in addition to SNGH, the other four films were Stag, Dog, Unscrew, and Dumping Elaine.
So...now that we've taken care of the date mix-up, let's get into the short itself!
SNGH starred David as Pete, and Kate Ashfield - who he would also go on to star with in a 2002 audio drama called The Island and in 2005's Secret Smile - as Juliet. It also starred Diana Hardcastle as Anthea, Cliff Parisi as Colman, and Thusitha Jayasundera as Yasmin. Here is the archived BBC press release for WTLYL before it was aired.
And the plot? Well, if you haven't yet seen SNGH here's a great plot synopsis which might intrigue you enough to chase it down. It's from the 23 March 2003 edition of the Sunday Times: "Dan Zeff's cautionary tale Sweetnightgoodheart observes [how] David Tennant's attempts to ditch his girlfriend (Kate Ashfield) spiral out of control." And from the
Here are also a couple of photos!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And while we're at it, here are a number of short summaries - and one longer article from the Evening Standard which includes a photo! - which appeared in various newspapers when WTLYL aired in 2003:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During my research into the origins of SNGH, I've seen the BBC series it featured in variably titled as Ways To Leave Your Lover, and Eight Ways To Leave Your Lover. This discrepancy appears both in print and on the CVs of various actors and crew involved with the project (here's an example). While not confirmed, my belief is Eight Ways to Leave Your Lover was a working title. Five films aired on the program, but I've found an additional two which didn't (which makes me think there was a third whose title I have not been able to ascertain). I believe that at some point in the process, a decision was made to remove three of the films originally scheduled to air, and the name was changed accordingly.
in addition to SNGH, the other four films aired during WTLYL were Stag, Dog, Unscrew, and Dumping Elaine. I didn't find places to watch most of them, but you can see Dog and Dumping Elaine at the links I've provided. Here's what I know about them:
---
Stag - written by Ian Iqbal Rashid and starring Stuart Laing and Nitin Ganatra: a bridegroom wakes up on the morning of his wedding in bed with the best man.
Dog - written by Andrea Arnold and starring Joanne Hill, Freddie Cunliffe and Veronica Valentine: a fifteen year-old girl finds the will to stand up for herself when she witnesses a disturbing and violent incident.
Unscrew - written by Clara Glynn and starring Douglas Henshall and Emma Fielding: a surreal short about a guy whose girlfriend unscrews his penis and takes it with her when they begin separating their belongings after their breakup.
Dumping Elaine - written by Peter Lydon and starring Susan Lynch, Matthew Delamere and Dido Miles: waitresses play Cupid.
---
SNGH is archived at the BFI on VHS and Beta, and in two master forms (16mm/35mm). You can see it there, but I'll save you a trip: while a 4.35G digital copy was made off the master, there's no access to it. The viewing copy MP4 is only 305MB.
If you've read this far, you're probably wondering how you can see it. There are plenty of ways! If you are a registered BFI Screenonline user - and registration is free for users in UK libraries, colleges and universities - you can watch it here (and perhaps download it, though I'm given to understand it's only available for download during certain times). It's also floating around the webs in various forms and qualities on Vimeo, Dailymotion, FilmNow, etc. All of these aren't the greatest of quality, but it's the best we've got. Ah, for a better quality video file taken off the master copy!
But I'd recommend watching it at Dan Zeff's own website.
And that's it for Sweetnightgoodheart. I hope you've enjoyed reading about it as much as I have writing and researching it!

Frozen 3 update from Jennifer Lee | Latest update
Tumblr media
Cover created by me
Jennifer Lee made an appearance at the BFI London Film Festival and she gave us an update on Frozen 3, reveals who came up with the idea for Frozen 3 and also teased future Frozen movies and content!! I'm even more excited now!
Here's what she said:
“Every morning last week they carved out space for me to work with the creative team on it, and I am blown away and I am so excited. I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet — I’m not doing nothing — except doing what I do now, which is we work on every project as as team and I’m in there with creative. But with ‘Frozen,’ just a little bit more.”
Jen Lee isn't directing this but instead is working with the creative team on it but doesn't have a specific role yet. She says that she is “blown away” by the work that she does. So clearly she's really excited about Frozen 3, seemingly more than the first two projects. With Frozen 2 we all saw how stressed Jen was in the "Into the unknown: Making of Frozen 2" 6 - part documentary on Disney plus but it seems like Frozen 3 's production is going smoothly and definitely better than the second movie's productions.
“Our philosophy is this, and it won’t change: If there is more story to tell, the filmmakers have to drive it. And I’ll say with ‘Frozen,’ Marc Smith, who was our director of story on ‘Frozen 2,’ came with an incredible idea for more ‘Frozen,’ and it’s worth it.”
“All our stories are driven by the artists in the studio. Where we’re going with Frozen did not come from me. It came from an incredible person. That’s a new piece, I’ve told no one. And it has blown away me and I’m just having a blast with that team."
She also talks about more Frozen and who gave her the idea of expanding the franchise. She and the team make a concept that they'll stick to that if there's more to tell of the story then they'll get the filmmakers to work on it and create another project of Frozen. She reveals that the “incredible idea” for Frozen 3 came from Marc Smith, the story director of Frozen 2, as seen in the documentary, and she says “it's worth it”. So it looks like Jennifer is listening to others ideas and let's them take the lead which is good.
It definitely sounds worth it! She sounds more enthusiastic which is a really good sign and if she believes this will get the story evolving and franchise growing, I'm all in! More Frozen, more me! Frozen 3 sounds big! Bare in mind that is the first trilogy in Disney animation studios. Other Disney trilogies in animation weren't produced by Disney Animation studios themselves.
I'm jumping up at how Frozen 3 is sounding! 😭🥹 I just can't wait! It's definitely living up to its potential. Jen Lee is really excited and bright and so I'm hopeful for the future of the franchise and not looking too much at the context yet as that spoils the excitement. Plus with Frozen's 10th anniversary, Frozen content is confirmed to drop with the run-up to it, so who knows what awaits us.
Here's the link to a couple of the articles that feature Jennifer Lee's quotes:

i read Alex Dudok de Wit's short book for 'BFI Classics' on Grave of the Fireflies. goddamn can de Wit write. it's got some very specific information about the production of the film that I hadn't known - the shenanigans needed to fund that Fireflies-Totoro double bill, the fact that it wasn't finished on release and that almost tanked Takahata's career - and an incredibly sharp scene by scene analysis of the film, particularly noting what Takahata changes from the novella and from its author's life, and the simultaneous realism and romanticism comparing to the Italian neorealists.
but especially interesting to me is de Wit's analysis of how and why the film failed to realise Takahata's ambition to not just convey 'war is sad' but convey his critique of contemporary Japan in Seita's actions (here are two excerpts I found interesting)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and how that relates to subsequent 'war anime'...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wrote about this subject last year after I saw Fireflies, comparing it with Gen and In This Corner; my post is like, ok, but of course it doesn't get nearly as far as Dudok de Wit does. but then he has been at the animation journalism and film crit thing a lot longer than I have. (also i was totally confusing Alex Dudok de Wit with Michaël Dudok de Wit, co-director of The Red Turtle, for a while there...)
In This Corner... doesn't get a mention here, but it seems that it is perhaps more typical of a genre than I realised. I'll pull out more whenever we get around to Giovanni's Island and - if I can find a copy! - Beneath the Black Rain on Animation Night.
anyway I think it's easy to read about Takahata's intent for the movie and think like, uhhh you wot mate? you want us to judge how irresponsible this teenage orphan in the middle of a war is being? some of his decisions to sanitise and idealise Seita, which already saw Nosaka (for understandable reasons, even if he didn't forgive himself for it) editing out the ugliest parts of his actions in that time, like hitting and taking food from Setsuko, also seem to undercut that intended reading. though it seems unlikely it would be a better film if he hadn't. so no wonder his intended reading doesn't come across. it's hard to imagine what a Grave of the Fireflies which was that uncompromising would feel like.

I’m going to start a hacking network solely targeting bfi to very quietly order and pay for restorations of movies only I care about and when the restoration lab sends the finished product to bfi they’ll be like when the hell did we ask for it. But then they’ll go well we already have it…. Start printing the discs I guess. And then on the side I’ll also rig the sight and sound polls but that would just be a bonus

Bill Brand was a 1976 political drama series in 11 parts, written by Trevor Griffiths and produced by Thames Television. Starring Jack Shepherd in the title role, it tells the story of a first-time Labour MP, Brand himself, a revolutionary socialist, elected to a northern constituency where a large amount of local employment relies on the ailing textile industry.
Bill Brand, a polytechnic lecturer in liberal studies, soon finds himself at odds with his old-school, working-class, socially conservative constituency party, and with the governing Labour Party over trade, social welfare and defence policy. He proves that he is not afraid to defy the party whips, and vote and act in accordance with his conscience and beliefs, particularly in support of his constituency textile workers. He aligns himself with a far-left party faction, the Journal Group, but at times seems even further to the left than they are.
Political integrity aside, Brand is not a totally sympathetic character; he is brazenly conducting an extramarital affair and seems aggrieved that his wife (Lynn Farleigh) is unwilling to sustain the façade of domestic stability for the purpose of his public image and for his standing within the local Party.
According to BFI online;
"...Bill Brand (ITV, 1976) was an epic attempt to lay bare the nature of political power in the UK, and more specifically to analyse if, and how, the socialist struggle could be furthered by the parliamentary Labour movement…Griffiths examines the political rifts within the Labour party, and, with uncanny foresight, dramatises the ideological conflicts that would eventually lead to the formation of the SDP..."
"...Bill Brand is a breath-taking series. Transmitted during the boiling summer of 1976, at peak-time between World in Action and News at Ten, it engaged with contemporary politics in a dramatic way, but remained consistently intelligent, and far from talking down to its viewers, assumed that they were a vital part of the political processes described, and as committed to understanding how things might therefore improve…"
There is a very strong supporting cast, including Geoffrey Palmer, Nigel Hawthorne, Rosemary Martin, Cherie Lunghi, Colin Jeavons, Allan Surtees and Alan Badel.
One of the most interesting cameos is from Arthur Lowe, a subtle and poignant performance as the exhausted and ill Labour Prime Minister, Arthur Watson, in the dying days of his leadership and on the verge of retiring on health grounds. Harold Wilson had unexpectedly resigned three months before the series went to air, but after it had been written.
When Bill Brand was transmitted, Lowe was on tour with the stage production of Dad's Army.
