Hillsides and Mountains with a Spring Bloom (Shenandoah National Park)
flickr
Hillsides and Mountains with a Spring Bloom (Shenandoah National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center with a view looking to the southwest to other ridges and peaks (Buck Mountain & Long Mountain based on PeakVisor app) in the Northern Blue Ridge. This is in Shenandoah National Park. In composing this image, I wanted to keep a balance with the foreground with the grasses and nearby trees and shrubs with that of the blues and whites in the skies above. I felt the foreground grasses helped to create a way to draw a viewer into the image and see the more distant mountains. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation in DxO PhotoLab 7. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 7 where I added a Polarization, Foliage, and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

Sandstone Falls and the New River (New River National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Looking to the southwest across the waterfalls area and then to distant ridgelines with Chestnut Mountain of the Southern Allegheny Mountains. I decided on capturing a long exposure to create a silkier look to the waters. Given the recent rains and the amount of water flowing and the overcast skies, I realized I only had to close down on my Nikon SLR camera’s aperture for that capture. I later did a conversion to black & white using Silver Efex Pro 2 where I made some adjustments to color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

One of 63 Ways to Beat Stress and Feel Great in New River Gorge National Park & Preserve by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking around the Sandstone Falls area of the national park with a view looking to the southwest across several waterfalls of the New River. My thinking in composing this image was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and create a sweeping view across the several waterfalls. That would also help to minimize the more overcast skies present that morning. By including some of the foreground, it would help to create a sense of scale and add a layered element and foreground to complete the setting.

My Navigations in Chaco Culture National Historical Park
flickr
My Navigations in Chaco Culture National Historical Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along the main park road with a view looking to the southwest to Fajada Butte not long after entering the park entrance. The setting is looking across the high desert landscape in this part of northern New Mexico. My thought on composing this image was to use some high ground that I was located on and capture sweeping view looking across the setting to my front while centering Fajada Butte in the image center. I wanted a balance between the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image with the blue skies and clouds above. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 7 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Guest Viewings in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Guest Viewings in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views of hoodoos and other eroded formations in the Devils Garden of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. I felt that zooming in on these two formations would allow for viewing of some of the details in the sandstone as well as create more of a sense of scale by having the formations fall off the image edges, in a “less is more” kind of composition.

Sunlight Through the Trees
flickr
Sunlight Through the Trees by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Another of those points walking on the trail from Franklin Falls where I found myself looking to the skies above. Here I decided to focus on not just including the sunlight but also the sun itself. But I've learned from past experience to not go with a full "exposure" to the sun. So I waited for the trees as they moved with a passing breeze to partial block the sun. It was only later that I'd wished I'd remembered to close down the aperture to try to catch more of a starburst look...maybe next time :-) Anywho, I later then later pulled out areas in shadows in Capture NX2 and I added a Pro Contrast and Foliage CEP filter to bring out the mood for sunlight on the tree leaves for the final image.

It is the Sunlight That Gave Warmth in Life (Congaree National Park)
flickr
It is the Sunlight That Gave Warmth in Life (Congaree National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: It is the Sunlight That Gave Warmth in Life The clouds that gave waters to the earth as nourishment The wonder of nature that gave us beauty to stir the mind The coming of a new day that gives us all a hope in tomorrow But for right now, I'll just stare at the skies above in awe. Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon while walking part of the Sims Trail in Congaree National Park. During most of my walks in this national park, it'd been with under a tall canopy of trees above me. I could see blue skies at times, but with an approaching storm, I could also see quite a few clouds. It was at this opening along the Sims Trail that I just stopped in place and took in an amazing view of these wisps of clouds seemingly painted across the blue skies. Composing the image was finding that way to use the nearby trees to kind of frame the image of the skies above me. I then had to meter the image which took a little practice in getting that right shutter speed where I wouldn’t blow any highlights but could also pull out the shadowed areas later without having any color cast present. There was also a matter of the sun and for that, I used some of the trees to kind of filter it so that it didn’t overwhelm the landscape with its bright light.

Silo and Glass Viewing Area (Minuteman Missile National Historic Site) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: On a previous day, I'd been out at this location at the Launch Facility (Missile Silo) Delta-09 and experienced overcast skies that were kind of blah. With the blue skies and those wisps of clouds above, it was an amazing sight to take in. I went with more of a wide angle view including more of those big skies of blue above as I'd seen something similar with postcards at the visitors center. And yes, there is the other heavier thought with this image given the Cold War and threat of ICBMs.

An Unnamed Creek Flowing through Prairie Grass and Badlands (Badlands National Park)

An Unnamed Creek Flowing through Prairie Grass and Badlands (Badlands National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A stop not far from the Fossil Exhibit Trail and Castle area. With this image, I wanted to capture that sweeping view across the prairie grasses and nearby creek and let those lead the eyes to the more distant badlands and formations. Given the overcast skies and intermittent rain that day, I decided to angle my SLR camera slightly downward capturing the grassland and smaller formations to my front. I could then work an angle to include the upper portions of the butte and pinnacles off in the distance. I later used a Pro Contrast and Skylight CEP filter in Capture NX2 for the final image to address what I felt was the more muted colors from the overcast skies above.

Even from Miles Away and then You See It the First Time... (Devils Tower National Monument)
flickr
Even from Miles Away and then You See It the First Time... (Devils Tower National Monument) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: The story behind this image is me driving along Wyoming Highway 24 while taking in the wonderful mountain and hillside views. With the blue skies and clouds above, it was magical! And throughout all this time, I kept wondering just how far away Devils Tower National Monument was and what it would be like to see that famous butte for the first time. Then I looked to my left, and there it was, just beyond this one hillside off in the distance. Needless to say, I stopped quite quickly at a place off the road, zooming in to capture this image! I angled my SLR camera slightly upward for a few reasons. One was just to avoid some nearby highway but also because the skies and clouds added that feeling of immenseness, even from miles away.
