Devils Tower (Bear Lodge) is Truly Impressive!
flickr
Devils Tower (Bear Lodge) is Truly Impressive! by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: As I drove along Wyoming Highway 24, I'd see off and on views of this famous butte. Needless to say, it was hard not to just stop and capture another image, but I wanted to get to the national monument to explore and walk around. Here I stopped next to some farmland and used that and the surrounding hills to add this pedestal or base like setting to it. I finished up post-processing work in Capture NX2 by adding a few CEP filters (Low Key, Polarization and Graduated Neutral Density) and some minimal cloning out of farm equipment for the final image.

Points West and Devils Tower: Tower Trail Loop Tour
Some time in June of 2017 I thought “I haven’t seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind in, like, years.”  Watching again was mixture of nostalgia trip, child-like fascination, and inspiration.  Much of the first half of the film is set in and around Muncie, Indiana, only a couple of hours from Lafayette and easy enough to visit; Devils Tower is rather farther away (to put it mildly), but I decided it was worth a journey.  In July, I made those trips.
Tumblr media
The Tower Trail provides the closest approach for the “ordinary” tourist or traveler.  The more sure-footed of those may jump from rock to rock upon the Boulder Field, but the closest approach is for the climber.  And the tower does attract a large number of those every year - including two who were ascending this day (to be seen later).
Tumblr media
Ah! Civilization: the parking loop at the Visitors Center where the Tower and Red Beds Trails converge.  The Park Service cautions that during the summer months the parking is limited here.  Indeed!
The Tower Trail is paved, unlike the others, and while it is steep in some places, it is perhaps more “family friendly.”  At only a mile or so around, it can be accomplished without too much fuss regardless of the age of the visitor.
Tumblr media
These photos are displayed in order of being taken, so while not quite a “virtual tour,” they do represent the views as seen along the route.
Tumblr media
Those views include the pine covered slopes, the tower itself, and vistas of the Belle Fourche River valley below.  Being roughly circular, all angles of sunlight are afforded.
Tumblr media
I will admit to being dismayed when I first ascended from the parking loop.  The number of people crowding the intersection of trail and uphill path made passage difficult and as much attention was directed at small children or phones - or both - there was little attention left over for where one stood on what proved to be a narrow way.  The paving was laid between boulders where they lay, which constricted the trail to only a few feet in width.  Ah, civilization.
Tumblr media
Fortunately the crowd thinned without a dozen yards of the intersection, and people moved (and I breathed) more easily.  Once more I could stop and inhale the pine scent that quite filled the atmosphere.
Tumblr media
I had come upon the Visitors Center and the Tower Trail by way of the Red Beds Trail, the long way ‘round, really.  Heeding the caution about parking I had not bothered to drive the saloon anywhere near the parking loop, but left it at a picnic area car park nearer the park entrance - a lot which could accommodate perhaps three score vehicles, but this day there were at best four.
Tumblr media
From the car park, I “hoofed it.”  After finding where Close Encounters had done its shooting along or near to the Red Beds, I figured I may as well go on about.  Why not?  It was a beautiful day, and I had come to see the area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep, climbing the tower.  These two are in a lot of photo collections!
Tumblr media
Devils Tower and Vulture A-Wing.
After comin’ round the way, I paused at the Visitors Center to refill my canteens, have some coffee and a snack, then I went on up the Tower Trail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the distance, on the valley floor, can be seen the KOA camp ground just out of the park entrance.  Nearer are some of the trees, fallen and standing yet, that were hit by a prescribed maintenance fire that went wild in 2013.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I do like me some sunlight through the trees.
Tumblr media
Above and Below: along the trail where it swings to the very foot of the exposed rock of the tower.  You need only reach out and put your hand on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The visitors this day were, after all, from all over.  In the parking loop I noted license plates from New Jersey, Missouri, California.  As I have wondered about the intentions of visitors to the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan, I wondered as to why some people came to Devils Tower.  No, I don’t have any answer, just one of those things that I wonder about sometimes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As with most parks, whether federal or state, anything that falls is usually left to decay as it will.  Visitors are adjured to leave it all alone.  As the adage “Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but foot prints.”
Tumblr media
According to a book that I picked up later at Mount Rushmore, these slopes are under-girded by the same igneous rock that make up the tower proper.  They are, too, the remains of the magma dome that pushed up through surrounding sedimentary rock some 1.5 million years ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along here there were a few moments of “peace and quiet.”  As drivers on highways and shoppers checking their purchases will cluster together, visitors trooping about the tower seemed to go about in “packs.”  A few times I found myself between packs, and sighed for the lack of foot traffic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So as I understand it, the Boulder Field, and the numerous rocks and boulders scattered across the landscape beneath the pines are, in the main, fallen from the tower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tower and the Boulder Field.  Visitors can make their way across the field, at least to where the walls rise, at the tree line in this photo.  Beyond that, a permit is required.

10 Charming Homes in America's Heartland
Although the exact borders of America’s heartland are a little fuzzy, one thing’s for sure: The region boasts picturesque farms, rustic homes and simpler times. Middle America also has another big thing going for it: affordability. The median price of homes in the Heartland are generally a fraction of what it would cost to live in a major city (San Francisco, we’re looking at you), and the ones we’ve found here are a steal even for the region.
But don’t let the low prices fool you; these aren’t fixer-uppers or eyesores. From a log cabin in rural Wisconsin to a 4-bedroom in Nebraska’s capital, these lovable abodes are move-in ready and Instagram-worthy.

Scenery In the Mirror (Devils Tower National Monument) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I'd gotten up early that Thursday morning so I could head off to explore and hike along the Red Beds Trail before any crowds might appear. The idea being to have the national monument almost all to myself :-) So as I was backing my rental car into a parking space, I glanced out the passenger side mirror and noticed this beautiful butte! Yes, Devils Tower (Bear Lodge)! While I could have taken up any space that morning to get the right angle, I decided it was simpler to just open the door and then work the angles to capture this image. I got the idea for this from this image on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/fengwei888/31553039716/in/gallery-1...).

It's Hard Not to Want to Stand in Awe of Devils Tower (Bear Lodge) Even in the Parking Area by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: After stretching one's legs after a long drive, I noticed myself and pretty much everyone else doing the same thing as we soaked in this view at the famous butte that rises above all the Ponderosa Pines I was standing nearby.

Devils Tower (Bear Lodge) is Truly Impressive!
