This one-two punch from Outer Wilds remains one of my favourite discoveries in the entire game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"So we have this cannon that we're not supposed to crank to 11." "But we're going to, right?" "I mean, they knew we would try, so it's probably fine!"
Because elsewhere, at the construction yard:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Avens and Mallow are probably definitely going to turn the cannon to 11, so let's make 10 the new 11."
The enthusiasm and let's-do-this-get-the-airhorn attitude on one side, and the weary resignation (but! also letting Mallow and Avens be themselves!) on the other. I absolutely loved it.

some more spore space creatures!
malkofolk are a pescatarian species with the wanderer archetype. they are among one of the only species in the galactic community outside of the grox that cannot breathe on T3 planets, requiring T2 or lower to be able to expose themself to the atmosphere without assisted ventilation. their skin is pale pink and incredibly sensitive to UV light, which usually means they have to wear a special suit when visiting other planets regardless. they are nonetheless rather jovial and enjoy meeting other species.
the ottoven are ecologists sporting an exterior cardiovascular system and a diet consisting of 100% carrion. they very fiercely believe in protecting the galaxys' many ecosystems and have incredibly long lifespans, upwards of hundereds of years and even millennia. many ottoven practices and traditions, particuarly mourning and funeral rituals, can last many decades. practices of creating carrion suitable for eating are consistently present in every culture, and a highly diverse form of art. its kind of like making cheese. some methods invoke the presence of certain bacteria to give the carrion a sought-after taste, or require the corpse to be in a specific state of decay before consumption, or utilize insect-like animals to eat away certain parts of the carcass.
avens are small, herbivorous bards, who want to be traders incredibly badly. they are a playful species who would really dig on the stock market if it existed in the spore universe. they sport a rather roomy, marsupial-like pouch on their belly, which is primarially used for carrying things in. while the pouch is actually intended to house their young until they are old enough to walk, avens generally only mate once or twice in their lifetimes. their pouch is nicknamed the "primordial pouch" as it has been present for the entirety of their evolutionary line. their "trunk" is an extended upper lip and it was once used to peel a specific species of fruit that was an integral part to thier ancestors' diet, but has since gone extinct, leaving the trunk kind of useless but a popular place for body mods like peircings and gauges.

identifying wild plants in a very early stage of succession!
today i stopped by this big Mulch Pile and decided to see how many plants I could find growing in this one small area. the answer: way more than i expected!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first i found what looks to be some kind of elm that got cut down but decided not to let that stop it. i also found a few different wild carrot patches. this one is next to some bur clover/burr medic (to the right) and stickseed (behind). the latter two plants are both new to me, so i'm not 100% confident on their identifications. corrections are always appreciated!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i also found two types of mullein! these plants will grow tall stalks full of flowers in the fall, and they get pretty big. i find them on the sides of highways and on the edges of cornfields. on the left is common mullein, which has very soft, fluffy leaves, and on the right is moth mullein.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the field was absolutely COVERED in thistles. besides the honeysuckle, it was by far the most common plant growing there. on the left is a bull thistle, which takes up a very wide area. on the right, two creeping thistles are growing on either side of a daisy fleabane (one of my favorite plants ever :D) with some bittersweet nightshade at the front left and a very tiny boneset (another fall flower) at the front right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
final two plants, both of which i'm not very familiar with: on the left is some black snakeroot i found beneath the honeysuckle, and on the right is white avens, hiding in the shadow of a thick grapevine stem—one of several stems that extends up to wrap around the black cherry tree above. there were several black cherries at the edge of this mulch pile, the only things that didn't get cut down in this small area. and i'm very glad they weren't, because i got to learn about a new native tree today as well!
there were still a few more plants i had yet to identify, or that were too small to really tell what they were, but i had already spent like half an hour sitting in this mulch pile staring and taking pictures, so i figured it was time to move on. i had a lot of fun and i was really happy to have correctly identified most of these by myself before checking! (i use an identifier app, which can be wrong from time to time but is a really useful starting point for unfamiliar plants.)

The way some of yall mischaracterize Ratio as being stoic in chill when in reality he is 24/7 resisting the urge to rip everyone around him a new one is crazy to me like. He cares so much, so much. It’s unhealthy, he loses the idgaf war every time because Ratio is the least nonchalant person ever like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was this close to breaking character and throttling Sunday like you cannot tell me he wasn’t planning a murder in this scene. Ratio straight up calls Sunday a crazy bitch but everyone brushed it aside 😭
Honestly his entire conversation with Screwllum is just him tweaking, watch it on YouTube the VAs performance is amazing, you can here just how much He Cares
Tumblr media
Genuinely, Aventurine is way better at concealing his true feelings that Ratio. Ratio may be acting for the sake of the plan but the way he truly feels about anything he’s doing always seeps through, it’s why he apologizes to Aventurine in 2.0 in their staged argument scene. It’s why he is as mean to Sunday as he can be. It’s why him pretending that he “hates” Aventurine makes him act so silly. Ratio can’t fully commit to the bit, he can’t force himself to not care or to be someone he isn’t, because fundamentally Ratio CARES and that is something he is incapable of hiding, alabaster bust or not.
The problem is that him expressing his care is often done in a rude and/or blunt manner which people tend to interpret as stoicism or apathy when it’s anything but. Ratio’s vial that he gives to Aventurine is short, sweet and gets straight to the point, because that’s the easiest way for Ratio to express his emotions, even if it’s often detrimental for him and anyone else around him. However Aventurine understands him quite well, and knows that although brief, Ratio telling him to “stay alive, survive this and keep on living” is how he truly feels towards Aventurine, and that’s enough to keep him going.
Underneath Ratios carefully crafted marble facade is a man who cares so much and is so bad at expressing it and I wish the community in general, especially Aventio shippers would acknowledge that more. Ratios true moments of sincerity are brief, but they are anything but stoic. Let the man be soft, it’s in character.
