The interesting thing about Helen and Micheal being technically avatars of the spiral is that, as far as I can really tell, they were the only ones that actually became their fear. The other avatars are entwined with their fear, their nature, but they don’t act entirely from the fears themselves. Others have outside experiences, outside wants, and even act outside of their fears from time to time. Maybe excepting the Web, but when a fear is total manipulation… well, you know how that goes.

But the spiral avatar/s aren’t themselves anymore. They are explicitly no longer actual people, they are shells for the spiral. And maybe it’s fitting—the Madness is so consuming that they are no longer who they were. But their personality and motivation is the same from one body to the next. Gertrude tried to trap the spiral in Micheal, which unmoored the nature of the fear, but… then the spiral chose to take Helen, too. Micheal either makes one decision entirely from anything left and takes Helen, or is puppet to the spiral, which chooses to take Helen into itself not just to feed, but to rewrite Micheal out of power within itself. I think at one point it was sort of that the spiral saw Helen as a tool, but the thing is, while avatars allow the fears some power in our world, the spiral is notably not pleased when a body is forced into it.

And it makes sense, right? How would a melody describe itself, and all that. But having these avatars makes the spiral at least partially sensible, which can both add to it (the familiar being twisted) and negate the most important part of the spiral—the horror in the mystery.
