Gay Mermaid Books!!
Are you excited? 'Cause I'm literally so excited -- who doesn't love a gay mermaid book? Honestly, I think mermaids are a little underrated as fantasy creatures, and so it's time we change that. And be gay along the way. 'Cause why the fuck not, right?
I've compiled this list with all the gay books with mermaid and mermaid-adjacent creatures I've read before. I've also made a GoodReads Shelf with more books, as some lovely people from SaphLit (a sapphic bookclub you should definitely join!) contributed. I haven't read the ones that aren't here, though!
The Deepwater Bride, by Tasmyn Muir
If you're a veteran of queer books, you've probably heard of Tasmyn Muir! She's the author of The Locked Tomb Series, which starts with Gideon The Ninth and is about gay necromancers in space! It's a wonderful series, but before she sat down to write that, Ms. Muir penned this novellete, which is featured in the July/August 2015 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.
This is a more Lovecraftian take on aquactic creatures. The Deepwater Bride follows a young girl who can see the future, and the weird things that begin happening in her small town. All the while she's falling in love (with a girl, duh)!
This one will give you Ms. Muir's traditional cheeky style, which includes phrases such as the iconic "the drowned lord who dwells in dark water will claim you. the moon won't rise tonight, and you'll never update your Tumblr again". Not to mention, it's a quick read, and still takes you on a rollercoaster of a ride that will leave you wanting more.
Aquicorn Cove, by Katie O'Neill
Another quick read, Aquicorn Cove is the sweetest graphic novel you'll read. It's a middle grade, but like Ms. O'Neill's other work (The Tea Dragon Society, which you should also take a look at, by the way), this one can be enjoyed by all ages.
Aquicorn Cove follows Lana, a young girl who comes back to her family's seaside town to help clean up after a storm, and soon discovers the aquicorns - seahorse-like sea creatures. And, don't worry, there will be mermaid-like creatures as well!
This one is extra special because of how cute and fluffy it is - if you're looking for a nice, comforting read, look no further! Aquicorn Cove will fill your heart and make you feel warm and fuzzy inside!
The Girl From The Sea, by Molly Knox Ostertag
The Girl From The Sea is also a graphic novel! This one follows Morgan, a 15-year-old who terribly wants to leave the island she grew up on. But everything changes when she meets a selkie called Keltie, and her desire to leave seems to lessen...
What I really loved about this one was the introduction to the mythological figure of the selkie. It's so rarely seen in modern SFF and I thought it was lovely to see it here. Not to mention, the art is super sweet and it follows that queer first-love plot-line every gay person needs to read every once in a while. Definitely recommend!
Ice Massacre, by Tiana Warner
This is the first book in a trilogy I haven't completed yet, but this first one impressed me so much, I couldn't help but recommend. It follows Meela, who lives in the fictional Polynesian island of Eriana Kwai, which has been attacked mercilessly by mermaids. As a solution, the elders send groups of young men out to sea to try and kill them, but it hasn't been going well - the men fall prey to the mermaids' songs. Now, Eriana Kwai is trying out a different strategy - sending young women, and Meela is among them. But she might not be as immune to the songs as all the other girls are...
Ice Massacre is action-packed and is perfect if you're in need of a post-Hunger Games-revival fix. Most of the story follows the girls in the boat, as the situation progressively gets more and more dangerous, and it definitely feels like reading about Katniss in the arena. Although the story does skew a little younger, I do think it's a good read, and it had me totally hooked from start to finish!
The Deep, by Rivers Solomon
This is definitely the most interesting of the mix, and the one I recommend the most! The Deep follows an underwater, mermaid-like people, descendants of enslaved African women who were thrown overboard slaver ships. Because of their painful history, they have designated someone to hold one to their collective trauma: Yetu, a young mermaid, is their historian. But this role can be more draining then it seems, and Yetu might find herself wanting something else.
The world building in this novella is just so unique! And it draws you in. The writing is very atmospheric, making you feel like you're in the ocean (and I'm super scared of deep water, so that was a weird experience lmao). Not to mention, Mx. Solomon seemlessly weaves in themes relating to slavery and the Black experience, not to mention the queer representation. It's definitely a must-read!

Ice Massacre (Mermaids of Eriana Kwai #1) by @tianawarner (my book review)
Note: This is my original review from 2015 that I posted on Goodreads, and I still stand by it.
----------
I could not put this book down from start to finish. Perhaps I'm biased since I love mermaids, but Tiana Warner, the author, has written one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Ice Massacre is jam-packed with strong, female characters, action and violence, and blood and gore. It's a ship of twenty, warrior-hardened young women against a whole sea of mermaids. And these mermaids aren't quaint, Disney mermaids either. These mermaids are vicious to the bone.
Meela, our protagonist, has a soft spot for mermaids as a young girl. She befriends a young mermaid, Lysi, and they hang out together in secrecy everyday for a year. Meela's father spots them together and tries to kill young Lysi. He tells Meela that mermaids are born to persuade and manipulate people into trusting them so they can kill them easier. As Meela grows older she comes to believe this and is enlisted to train for an all-girl Massacre since every year the men fall to the mermaids' allure and fail. When Meela is eighteen years old, she goes out with nineteen other young women and all hell breaks loose out in the open waters.
There was literally nothing I disliked about this book. Everything from the tender moments with Lysi and Meela to sheer, detailed, brutal combat between mermaid and woman was spectacular to read. Tiana does an excellent job at describing everything from combat to scenery in this novel. You'll feel like you're actually in the Gulf of Alaska and that is not a bad thing. It's always nice when an author can make you feel like you're actually in the setting with the characters you're reading.
Nonetheless, this book deserves all the praises it has received and I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone! I eagerly await the sequel!
READ THIS BOOK!
My rating: 5/5 stars

Webcomics Focus: "Ice Massacre"
Tumblr media
Ice Massacre tells the story of Meela, who has to decide whether she will save her people or the mermaid she has fallen in love with.
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the thirteenth article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on November 10, 2021. Also, this post has been slightly changed from the original.
Ice Massacre, written by Tiana Warner and illustrated by April Pierce, is about Meela, whose people have been at war with mermaids for eons, being tasked to join her fellow comrades in the "Massacre" even though she was in love with a mermaid when she was a child. As she goes on this voyage with the other women of Eriana Kwai, it remains a question whether she can overcome feelings she had for a mermaid she is trained to kill. It is not only a enemies-to-lovers story, but also about warrior women and badass mermaids as the comic's Patreon states.
The webcomic begins with the death of Meela's brother at the hand of mermaids and Meela training to become a warrior. Another woman, Dani, is her rival. Meela saves another person training alongside her who is trapped in the rope and confides to her friend Annith about Dani. The instructor gives out badges to those who have completed the course. Meela laments that the island will need more than a sea mermaid massacre to make the people of Eriana Kwai free again. Tanuu presents her some flowers but she isn't as sure about him, and she goes back home, vowing to kill every single mermaid. We see back eight years earlier when Meela had a childhood friend, a mermaid named Lysithea. The story goes on from there, but I don't want to say any more, as that provides enough of the story to pique your interest.
Tumblr media
Ice Massacre has compelling characters and storylines. This includes Meela who wants to avenge the death of her brother, the mermaid Lysithea who once fell in love with Meela and has trained to battle against the humans, and Dani, a human who is a rival with Meela and wants to prove herself. There's also Tanuu, Meela's boyfriend, and Meela's best friend, Annith, who has a boyfriend named Rik. The focus on mermaids is a common one, but tying into into a girls' love story makes it all the more interesting, as many mermaid stories are more along the lines of mermaid preying on women, not mermaids falling in love with women. The fact that the majority of the women are brown-skinned is significant and notable, as other mermaid stories only focus on White people.
Ice Massacre, which has more than 121 episodes, is written by Warner and illustrated by Pierce, while it has Rachel "Tuna" Petrovicz and Mimi LeBlanc as colorists and Todd Baker as the Indigenous art director. Ice Massacre is the webcomic adaption of Warner's fiction trilogy entitled Mermaids of Eriana, comprised of the books Ice Massacre (2014), Ice Crypt (2016), and Ice Kingdom (2017), which won two Sequential Magazine Awards in 2020.
Warner's other novels, published in 2019, specifically Ice Storm and Aries 181, also center on LGBTQ themes and protagonists, like those in the Mermaids of Eriana series. Warner also has a novel The Helheim Princess, a valkyrie romance, which will be published next year, as will a sapphic paranormal romance collection entitled Eternally Hers, for which she is a contributing author. On the other hand, Pierce is the artist and lead writer of Prince and Swan, a fantasy/fairy-tale/magic webcomic which is currently on hiatus.
It is one of the many of the recent stories which have focused on or featured mermaids. This includes Yongchan's enjoyable webcomic, Swimming Lessons For A Mermaid, and Sapphire's exciting webcomic, The Pirate and the Princess. Additionally, Mermista, a bisexual water princess who can transform into a mermaid, appears in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and while the protagonists of the young adult animated series, High Guardian Spice, seem to turn into mermaids in a scene in the show's 11th episode!

Ice Massacre is available to read on WebToon, Tapas, or the webcomic's official website. You can interact with the webcomic on its official Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, while physical copies of the webcomic can be purchased on Amazon.

The Valkyrie's Daughter, Tiana Warner
"May the gods guide you on this journey."
It's been a while since I've had this much fun reading a book! From the very beginning I was pulled in, hooked, and struggled to put it down.
The characters are all unique, and I love the ragtag trio going on this adventure. They all grow together and become their own little family, and they always stuck it out no matter what happens.
Plus, there's a F/F slow burn romance, and I heard it develops more in book 2 👀
The Norse mythology is woven beautifully throughout, while still making the book unique and interesting to read. I loved the authors note on her inspiration and where she took creative liberties!
This was all around a fun fantasy with Norse mythology throughout. I look forward to the next book! No massive cliffhangers here, but there's quite a few loose ends that need tying up. Well worth the read.
Do you prefer Greek or Norse mythology based stories?
_________
-> I love both honestly! Give me all the mythology ~

Snowed in with Summer by @tianawarner
----------
Date Read: March 5, 2024 - March 8, 2024
----------
Snowed in with Summer is about Avery, the novel's protagonist, and her journey to rediscover the woman she used to be. She and her boyfriend were planning a trip to the Yukon to see the Northern Lights during the winter solstice, but her boyfriend got cold feet and dumped her instead. The trip was already paid for, though, so why waste it? Avery decides last minute to go and enjoy the week-long vacation by herself. However, when she arrives, there's someone there she wasn't expecting...
The someone is Summer, Avery's ex-girlfriend from seven years ago, hence the title: Snowed in with Summer. Look, I like the title. You wouldn't expect snow during the summer (unless you're Olaf), but in this case Summer is referring to Avery's ex. It's a cute title. I thought it was a really cute book, too.
At 216 pages, it's an easy read. It took me a few days to finish it, but only because I'm a slow reader. I really enjoyed this book a lot and I look forward to getting caught up on the author's other books that I've missed over the years. So, what did I like about the book specifically? I'll tell you (without spoilers)!
I found Avery to be a really pleasant protagonist. This story is told through the first-person point-of-view and it was fun being inside Avery's head. Tiana Warner writes her really well and you can feel when Avery is experiencing anger, joy, love, heartbreak, and passion.
Speaking of passion, author Tiana Warner knows how to write some spicy sex scenes. Her descriptions are on point and she paints the scenes vividly with her writing. By no means is this a bad thing, this book is a romance novel after all, and what's some adult romance without a little bit of sex? I will say that I was glad that I was home when I read these scenes, though.
I really enjoyed Avery and Summer melting the ice between each other and then getting to experience them being playful, flirty, and loving with one another. This is why I love romance. I just love reading about two people fall in love (re-fall in love?) with each other and Tiana Warner did a great job at showing the connection Avery and Summer used to have to one another and still have with each other.
Summer as a character is beautifully written with her own set of flaws. She's not one to stay in a single place for a long time; she enjoys traveling and seeing the world. However, as you read the novel you learn why she travels so much and you feel for her. You want to hug her and let her know that everything will be okay. As a person who grew up with divorced parents who absolutely hated each other, I get it, Summer. I get it.
Overall, I would recommend this book. It's a short, beautifully-written, lesbian romance with a protagonist with whom I really enjoyed spending time. Give this book a read!
OH! I gotta add, I really enjoyed the Epilogue. It was so incredibly sweet! :')
-My review score: 5/5 stars

Micro Brew | Favourites Micro Brew is hosted by Allie @ Hexen Librarian and its a fun way to promote something you love. On the 1st of each month she’ll give us 2 lots of prompts/questions for the 2 post that month.
Best thing is you can take part when you’re ready! So your answers can go live on the designated days or later on when it suits you best.
To take part all you have to do is tag Allie so she can see your responses, visit Melanie (part of the prompt creation) on twitter, include the header and an explanation, and complete the themed prompt.
February 18: Talk about your favorite underrated or lesser known book. A book you never see anyone talk about or you think has fallen to the wind. One that you just keep recommending and no one ever follows through reading.
Please note: this post contains summaries from Goodreads and affiliate links to purchase the books; you’ll not be charged any extra when purchasing through these.
So the last prompt turned out to also answer this one becase everyone seemed to comment that they weren’t aware of the Wicked Lovely series. I know a few have even set out with the intention to read it too so I am feeling the pressure today to provide some more books y’all can seek out!
I decided rather than just picking out some recent reads I think are underrated that I would also vidit my Goodreads Read Shelf and organise it to show the books with the lowesta, ount of ratings first. I have so many with less than 100 so here is a small handful of them that I rated highly and think y’all need to pick up ASAP.
[related post: How To Organise Your Goodreads Shelves]
UPCOMING RELEASES
Aries 181 | The Migration
me: I wont just list my recent reads also me: heres 2 of my recent reads
But its true okay, and maybe that does have something to do with the fact that neither of these books are released yet but I don’t care! I’m including them so you can be ready to buy them on release date ok?!
Aries 181 currently has 7 ratings and is releasing 26th March this year. No pre-order links available yet but when there are thats when my full review will exist. For now all you need to know is that if you like (queer) women who kick butt with science and are ready for your next Harley/Joker couple to read about then this is the story for you!
The Migration currently has 13 ratings and is releasing 5th March, you can pre-order here. This is perfect for those of you who like your horror a little more science based and definitely for fans of The Girl with all the Gifts! Usually I don’t find Adult books to be speedy reads but I really did devour this one. Again, full review to be posted soon~
BACKLIST BOOKS
Stake Sauce | Silver and Bone | The Dark World | Bubblegum | Fragments
Now time for a few I found thanks to sorting through my Goodreads shleves. I notice a slight theme here, the first three are all vampire books. Read more great vampire books kids!
Stake Sauce has 84 ratings and is a LGBT vampire story that deals amazingly with grief. Big fan!
Silver and Bone has 38 ratings and is a great urban fantasy + mystery read. Follow vampire detective Jennifer Jones as she uncovers who is framing her for murder and why.
The Dark World has 35 ratings and is the perfect dark fantasy / horror for you to pick up if you’re in need for a longer series to whisk you away with vampires, werewolves, dragons, and much more.
Now for a little change of pace. Bubblegum (33 ratings) is a fast paced + action packed dystopian. Follow Tiana who gives 0 fucks and is gonna murder the bad guys to help save her oddly formed family.
Lastly is Fragments (25 ratings) which I haven’t reviewed yet but now Audra’s printing issue has been solved I really should. This is a beautiful collection of sketches by artist Audra Auclair, I really love it and I’m pretty excited to flick back through and see what pages I tabbed as my faves last time.
YOUR FAVE FROM 2018
By Blood | Moon Child
In 2018 Tracy Banghart released Grace & Fury which I know many of you loved but honestly my love for Tracy’s work started back in 2013 with her self published duology By Blood (101 ratings) and Moon Child (66 ratings)! These can be read in any order and are YA Fantasy books.
I had a great time with both of these and found them to be very fun exploration of some fantasy elements! I don’t doubt her writing has improved over the years but these will always remain a soft spot in my heart. Click their bolded titles for my full reviews + purchase links.
As with all of these post I plan to not tag anyone specifically as I’d love for as many of you to take part as possible. These posts are perfect for days when you’re having trouble with inspiration and a great way to find out more about other bloggers .

[Image Description: Book cover of Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner. It is underwater and shows the tail of a mermaid, half of it is stained red with blood and blood is falling into the water.]
Title: Ice Massacre
Author: Tiana Warner
Prompt: 40 -  A YA book with a protagonist of color
Summary (from Goodreads):  A mermaid’s supernatural beauty serves one purpose: to lure a sailor to his death. The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai. Every year, the island sends its warriors to battle these hostile sea demons. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, the island must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid’s allure. Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that’s haunted her since childhood. For any hope of survival, she must overcome the demons of her past and become a ruthless mermaid killer. For the first time, Eriana Kwai’s Massacre warriors are female, and Meela must fight for her people’s freedom on the Pacific Ocean’s deadliest battleground.
Review: I enjoyed this book. I loved the world-building and though the mermaids were interesting. I also thought it had a fantastic villain, and an intriguing plot. However, I was disappointed in the romance, and I never really connected with any of the characters. Overall, I would recommend if you like mermaids.
