A Historically Significant Emerald Ring
Featuring a square emerald-cut emerald weighing 5.27 carats, size 5¾, signed Valentin Magro.
A ring with a 400-year-old emerald from the 1622 Nuestra Señora de Atocha galleon shipwreck was put up for auction by Sotheby's to raise funds for humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine. Its owner, Mitzi Perdue visited Ukraine this past summer.
The extraordinary treasures of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha reflect the unimaginable wealth and vast domain within the New World that Spain controlled in the early 17th century. When the overladen Spanish galleon tragically wrecked on a coral reef and sank off the Florida coast amidst a hurricane in 1622, the ship’s hold contained some 180,000 coins and 24 tons of ingots struck from Bolivian silver as well as 125 bars of gold bullion extracted from the Caribbean, Mexico and the Andes amongst its many treasures.
In addition to precious metals, the ship’s detailed log recorded an astonishing 70 pounds of rough-cut emeralds mined from Colombian sources in Chivor and Muzo which the Spanish had first learned of in the early 16th century. As Spain introduced these gems to a European and, in time, a global audience, their shocking depth of color, size, and clarity were unlike anything previously known from the long depleted Egyptian mines of antiquity.
After spending 363 years lost and submerged, the Atocha wreck (as it came to be known) captured the world’s attention when news first broke of its discovery in 1985. Long time treasure hunter Mel Fisher and his team had steadfastly searched an area off the coast of Florida for 16 years, weathering the loss of friends and family in the pursuit, before finally locating the remains of the ship and its precious cargo. These efforts required the belief and patronage of many individuals, amongst them Frank Perdue who was an early believer and fellow enthusiast of Atocha history.
The present lot is set with an expertly cut stone faceted from an emerald crystal recovered from the Atocha. In 1988, Mel Fisher and Frank Perdue worked with famed emerald lapidaries Reginald C. Miller and Jerrold Green of New York to select the best possible emerald crystals from their collection so that a fine gem could be cut for each of them. The resulting 5.27-carat stone was set in gold and proudly presented by Frank to his wife Mitzi as a cherished engagement present and in remembrance of this tremendous undertaking.

~ “The Atosha is The Most Valuable Shipwreck Find in History. The Spanish galleon was owned by King Philip IV, before sinking into the ocean in 1622 during a hurricane. It carried an armament of 20 heavy guns and was heavily laden with copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, and others from Spanish ports at Cartagena and Porto Bello in New Granada (present-day Colombia and Panama) and Havana, bound for Spain. The cargo was so vast that it took two months to load everything. When it sank, the Atocha was just 86 miles from Havana, Cuba. All The Spanish attempts to recovery were met with failure and they were only able to reclaim about half of the contents from the Santa Margarita (One of the five ships ran aground), but they never reached the site of the Atocha. ‘In 1969, a group of American treasure hunters took up this adventure that would rewrite history. Finally, in July of 1985, after 16 years of search they found the missing Atocha. The find was so valuable that the state of Florida took legal action to claim what they believed was, in part, their property. US treasure hunter Mel Fisher was most famous for discovering the shipwrecked Spanish galleon. The legal battle lasted eight years before reaching the US Supreme Court. There, judges ruled in favor of the treasure hunters. The total find was estimated to be worth $400-$450 million USD, consisting of approximately 40 tons of gold and silver and 70 lbs of emeralds’ according to The Guardian & Coiweek. Other unique treasure from the Fisher collection is on display at museums in Florida and have been donated to other museums across the US.” ~

HANUKKAH 2022
HANUKKAH 2022 - https://keywestlou.com/hanukkah-2022/Happy Hanukkah! The Jewish holiday began last night. It lasts 8 days. I know little of the holiday. Though more I suspect than most Christians. The knowledge acquired I owe to my friends Aaron Wechter and Donna Barnett. They have spoon fed me along the way during my years in Key West. My knowledge from the religious perspective is what is limited. The "fun" parts are what I know best. For example, eating. Many of the foods are "oily." Fried. Latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts). Music another. Singing along in the synagogues. Gifts big! One a night for 8 nights. Considered by some to be an expanded reaction to Christmas. A busy day ahead. On top of my already being behind. Spent a lot of time researching an item this morning I considered writing about. When I completed the research, I realized the issue was not worth writing about nor wasting your time reading. However it left me tired and time wise behind. Anyhow, the January 6 Committee report will eat up most of the afternoon. I am a political junkie at heart. Would not miss it. Tonight, the Chart Room definitely. Meeting Steve and Cindy Thompson. Invited Laura Bateman to join us. She mentioned last week she would like to meet Steve and Cindy and pick their brains about "old" Key West. Laura lived in Key West for a time many years ago. Mel Fisher an intrinsic part of Key West. Forever more. Fisher died this day in 1998 at the age of 76. He spent 15 years searching before he found the mother lode of the Spanish treasure galleon Atocha in 1985. The Atocha was headed for Spain when it sank in a hurricane off the Florida Keys in 1622. Political theorist and writer Thomas Paine published his first American Crisis essay this day in 1776. The essay's opening words with us forever: "These are the times that try men's souls." Paine also authored Common Sense. Some Russians believe the Ukraine War has destroyed Putin's aura of infallibility and represents the beginning of the end for him with the Russian people. Let's hope so! Enjoy your day!

A Rare Spanish Colonial Silver-Gilt Two-Handled Cup from the Atocha Shipwreck Bogotá, Colombia, circa 1620
Nuestra Señora de Atocha was a Spanish treasure galleon and the most widely known vessel of a fleet of ships that sank in a hurricane off the Florida Keys in 1622. At the time of her sinking, Nuestra Señora de Atocha was heavily laden with copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, and indigo from Spanish ports at Cartagena and Porto Bello in New Granada (present-day Colombia and Panama, respectively) and Havana, bound for Spain. The Nuestra Señora de Atocha was named for the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha in Madrid, Spain. It was a heavily armed Spanish galleon that served as the almirante (rear guard) for the Spanish fleet. It would trail behind the other ships in the flota to prevent an attack from the rear.
Much of the wreck of Nuestra Señora de Atocha was famously recovered by an American commercial treasure hunting expedition in 1985. Following a lengthy court battle against the State of Florida, the finders were ultimately awarded sole ownership of the rights to the treasure.

The World's Most Valuable Shipwreck: The Nuestra Senora de Atocha
On this same day, 35 years ago, the legendary deep-sea explorer Mel Fisher discovered the shipwreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha. The galleon was sailing from the new world to Spain. It was hit by a hurricane and sank in 1622. 260 people lost their lives in this accident. Only five survived by climbing the mizzen, which remained above the water.
Senora de Atocha was loaded with several precious items. But what makes this ship so special is that it contained 40 tons of gold and silver and around 70 pounds of Colombian emeralds, some of the finest and most expensive in the world.
Spanish salvors tried and failed to recover this precious cargo because the hatches were locked tight. A second hurricane further destroyed the shipwreck and it was lost without a trace.
In 1969, more than 300 years later, Mel Fisher started looking for Atocha’s treasure. This mission was lengthy and dangerous. A few finds along the way convinced him that he is getting closer to the great discovery. The crew found some silver bars in 1973; their tally marks matched Atocha’s paperwork. Two years later, they found five of the galleon’s cannons. In 1980, they discovered the wreck of the Santa Margarita (Atocha’s sister ship).

Three members of his crew (a diver, his son, and his wife) lost their lives during this quest when their boat capsized. The treasure hunter was shaken but he didn’t lose hope and he knew that the lost teammates would have wanted the expedition to resume. He always kept saying “Today’s the day!”.
In addition to the previous difficulties, the treasure hunter has to fight a court battle against the state of Florida who wanted ownership or at least a percentage of the treasure. The US Supreme Court ruled in his favor.
On July 20, 1985 - 35 years ago today - Mel Fisher discovered the shipwreck of the Nuestra Senora De Atocha off the Florida Keys. The cargo’s value is estimated to be worth around $400 million. The treasure includes 24 tons of silver bullion, ingots, and coins, 125 gold bars and discs and 1,200 pounds silverware. Other items with great historical importance were recovered, like 20 bronze cannons, navigational instruments and Native American artifacts. This is why it was declared the most valuable shipwreck in the world by the Guinness world record in 2014.
One of the most well-known items in this treasure is the “money chain.” It is a gold chain that hangs past the waist. Mel Fisher wore it when he appeared on the “The Tonight Show” hosted by Johnny Carson. This chain alone is estimated to be worth $100,000. The treasure wasn’t entirely sold. Some of the artifacts are displayed at Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida.
Alex Lemaire is passionate about inland and underwater treasure hunting, and he believes that his hobby is an amazing way to learn more about the history of humanity.

EARLY MEL FISHER
EARLY MEL FISHER - https://keywestlou.com/early-mel-fisher/How fortunate Steve Thompson is around to recall the Key West of earlier times. He shared a bit of Mel Fisher's early days on the island. Mel and Deo were always smiling. They were Chart Room regulars since arriving. Mel was a real go-getter. Always working. He spent his whole life treasure searching. His office, a Spanish galleon, moored right off Front Street. If he could keep it afloat, it was really neat. If you were a diver in the 70's, likely you worked for Mel's crew. If you weren't, he would show you just what to do. He was tall, had a low voice, and everyone loved him. He liked to talk, a natural born salesman. It was another 10 years till they found the Atocha. I think everyone who knew him, could hear him say, "I told ya." Affordable housing an ongoing problem. Not just in Key West. All over the country. Greed the primary cause. Story for another day. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has come up with what she believes is a solution. I do not agree with her. Government/taxes cannot support everything. Her solution wants to provide $10 million in an effort to lower rents. She would subsidize landlords. If a rent was $3,000 per month, the City would pay a $2,000 a year subsidy to the landlord. Breaks down to $167 per month. The proposal should be killed now, in its initial steps. It short due course, it will not really be a help to tenants. It would serve as a rip off benefitting landlords. Key West has been home to many successful businesses over the years. They came, grew, succeeded and then for business reasons moved elsewhere. Cigar manufacturing an example. In 1906, there were 40 cigar factories staffed by 2,000 plus employees. It's Syracuse/Connecticut saturday. Kick off 4 pm at Connecticut. Syracuse a 22.5 point favorite. Wow! Putin does not care. He'll inflict danger, pain and suffering everywhere and anywhere to achieve his goals. He has renewed Russian bombing near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. The plant's neighboring community is Enerhordor. It serves the nuclear plant. Already the communty is suffering from new fires and has lost its entire electrical supply. Enjoy your day!
