Annie G. Fox (August 4, 1893 - January 20,
1987) was the first woman to receive the Purple Heart for combat. She served as the chief nurse in the Army Nurse Corps at Hickam Field during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941. At that time the awarding of the Purple Heart did not reguire the service person to be injured. The requirements were changed after the attack of Pearl Harbor and Lt. Fox was awarded the Bronze Star because Fox was not wounded in the attack.
First Lieutenant Annie G. Fox was on duty at the time of the attack of the Japanese Imperial Navy on Hawaii. For her outstanding performance, Fox was recommended for and awarded the Purple Heart. Because of that, it is often misreported that she was injured during the attack; in fact,

'Heroes are Human: Lessons in Resilience, Courage and Wisdom from the COVID Front Lines' Set Releases Sept. 27
Tumblr media
Lessons in Resilience, Courage and Wisdom from the COVID Front Lines honors front-line healthcare workers—recounting the gripping, first-hand stories of their struggles through the pandemic. With empathetic guidance from Bob Delaney—internationally recognized in the field of Post-Traumatic Stress—Heroes are Human is at the forefront of new books that deal with this critical issue, deepening our understanding of the toll this work has taken and offering invaluable strategies for self-care and healing. His message to frontline workers—not all wounds bleed, and invisible wounds may hurt as much as the wounds we see.
The book is co-authored with award-winning journalist Dave Scheiber, and contains a foreword by renowned Harvard Global Mental Health director Dr. Richard Mollica. Publication date is September 27, 2022 by City Point Press, distributed by Simon & Schuster.
Heroes Are Human is comprised of powerful stories told by frontline health-care workers, their family members, and those they care for in the harrowing fight against COVID-19. In addition, Delaney shares lessons on how caregivers can navigate the resulting stress and potential burnout through an uplifting message of resilience, self-care, and post-traumatic stress education.
Delaney comes by his healing wisdom from hard-won experience. He learned about PTSD firsthand, developing the condition after emerging from grueling and prolonged undercover police work in a three-year undercover infiltration of the Mafia in the 1970s. He went on to become one of the NBA’s top referees for twenty-five years.
But it’s what Delaney does off the court that has truly defined his legacy. Since recovering from the trauma, he has made helping others overcome the condition his life’s focus. His contributions to PTS awareness and support to military officials and their families have been recognized with honors and proclamations from many, including:
• President Barack Obama’s Volunteer Service Award for Delaney’s ongoing PTS education and awareness work with the military • Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Mannie Jackson Human Spirit Award, 2014 • Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors (TAPS) with the National Community Partnership Award for his work with military Gold Star families (2017) and is a TAPS Advisory Board member • U.S. Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal in 2011 for his assistance in the aftermath of the Fort Hood shootings and his work with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan • Special Advisor for the Southeastern Conference and an NBA Cares Ambassador • 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association’s highest honor—The Theodore Roosevelt Award, bestowed on four U.S. Presidents (Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan) and other distinguished citizens • Harvard Global Mental Health Trauma Recovery alumnus; presents globally on leadership, resiliency, trauma, self-care
Delaney and Scheiber have collaborated on two previous books. Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob – the thrilling story of Delaney’s experience as a young Jersey State Trooper and his undercover investigation of the Mafia, named a USA Today 2008 Best Book of the Year (Sterling Publishing, 2008); and Surviving the Shadows: A Journey of Hope into Post Traumatic Stress, which shares stories of courageous women and men who experienced trauma and how they successfully dealt with it (Sourcebooks, 2011).
What They Say About Heroes are Human
“Bob Delaney speaks straight from the heart and from hard-earned experience. His practical approach to coping with the ‘operational stress’ of life reaches every audience. The beauty of those who work to heal shines through in this book.” —Catherine S. O’Neal, MD, Chief medical officer, Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Baton Rouge; associate professor of medicine, infectious diseases, LSU Health Sciences Center
“With his special gift for storytelling, Bob Delaney brings us into the world of those on the front lines in our battle with coronavirus. This is a story that needs to be told, and Heroes Are Human tells it brilliantly.” —General (Ret.) Martin E. Dempsey, 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
“Bob Delaney speaks with great authenticity to those among us who have experienced trauma. He has brought a message of hope to scores of wounded warriors and now is offering his message of resilience in the face of distress to frontline clinicians in the struggle against COVID-19.” —Dr. Gregory Fricchione, Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
Today the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol asked eight federal agencies for records. The chair of the committee, Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), gave the agencies two weeks to produce a sweeping range of material that showed the committee is conducting a thorough investigation of the last days of the Trump administration.
Thompson sent letters to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which keeps the records for the government; the Defense Department; the Department of Homeland Security; the Interior Department; the Department of Justice; the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); the National Counterterrorism Center; and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
While the House had previously asked the National Archives for all the records it had covering the events and federal actors involved in the events of January 6 itself, the select committee is using a much wider lens. It has asked the departments not just for records covering January 6, but also for those reaching back as far as April 1, 2020, to see if the Trump administration had plans to contest and ultimately, should he lose, overturn the election.
The committee has asked the departments for any records about plans to derail the electoral count, organize violent rallies, declare martial law, or use the government positions to overturn the election results. It has also asked for any “documents and communications” about foreign influence in the 2020 election through social media and misinformation.
And then there was this tidbit. The last items the committee asked NARA to produce were: “All documents and communications related to the January 3, 2021, letter from 10 former Defense Secretaries warning of use of the military in election disputes.”
That letter, which was published in the Washington Post and signed by all ten of the living former defense secretaries, warned that “[e]fforts to involve the U.S. armed forces in resolving election disputes would take us into dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory. Civilian and military officials who direct or carry out such measures would be accountable, including potentially facing criminal penalties, for the grave consequences of their actions on our republic.” The letter reminded then–acting defense secretary Christopher C. Miller and his subordinates that they were “each bound by oath, law and precedent to facilitate the entry into office of the incoming administration, and to do so wholeheartedly. They must also refrain from any political actions that undermine the results of the election or hinder the success of the new team.”
It was an extraordinary letter, and its authors thought it was important enough to write it over the holidays, for publication three days before the January 6 electoral count. The driving force behind the letter was former vice president Dick Cheney.
Cheney’s daughter Liz Cheney (R-WY) sits on the House select committee.
Trump has threatened to invoke executive privilege to stop the release of the documents.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said the committee’s action proved it is not looking for truth but rather is engaging in politics. The committee asked NARA for records of communications between the president and “any Member of Congress or congressional staff.” This will sweep in McCarthy, who had a heated conversation with Trump on the phone as rioters invaded the Capitol. “They come for members of Congress, they are coming for everybody,” he said.
But, in fact, such a sweep is precisely how scholars actually figure out what has happened in historical events. Limiting research before you know the lay of the land simply obscures the larger picture.
Just such a limiting view is on the table for the Republicans right now as they are proposing to investigate President Biden’s exit from Afghanistan if they regain control of the House in 2022, saying it “makes Benghazi look like a much smaller issue.”
The first days of the evacuation after the Afghan army crumbled and the Taliban swept into control of the country in nine days were chaotic, indeed, but since August 14, the U.S. has evacuated more than 82,300 people, bringing out 19,000 people yesterday alone. It has evacuated at least 4500 U.S. citizens and has sent more than 20,000 emails and made more than 45,000 phone calls to Americans who had notified the embassy they were in the country (since Americans do not have to register with the embassy, it is unclear how many citizens are there). A rough estimate says there are probably 500 U.S. citizens who want to leave, while another 1000 are not certain or want to stay.
Today, Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a press conference pointing out that the evacuation “is one of the largest airlifts in history, a massive military, diplomatic, security, and humanitarian undertaking,” and noted that “[o]nly the United States could organize and execute a mission of this scale and this complexity.”
Blinken said that the success of the airlift to date has been “a testament both to U.S. leadership and to the strength of our alliances and partnerships.” He reiterated that the Biden administration is not abandoning Afghanistan but is shifting its focus from military power to diplomacy, cybersecurity, and financial pressure. He said that the administration has worked hard to build alliances and that the U.S. will continue to work with allies both in Afghanistan and elsewhere going forward. He pointed out that the Taliban has made both public and private assurances that they will continue to allow people to leave the country, and that 114 countries—more than half of the countries in the world—have warned the Taliban that they must honor that commitment.
Tonight, it appears the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating. Russia, which backed the Taliban in its struggle against the U.S. and which originally said Taliban control would restore stability to Afghanistan, has begun to evacuate its citizens from Kabul. And tonight, the U.S. government warned of security threats and urged U.S. citizens to leave the area around the airport immediately. According to a State Department spokesperson: "This is a dynamic and volatile security situation on the ground.”
When asked by a reporter about investigations into the evacuation, Blinken said he and the president accepted responsibility for it. He seemed fine with scrutiny of the last few months but suggested that that period should not be looked at in isolation if we are going to learn from our experience in Afghanistan. “[T]here will be plenty of time to look back at the last six or seven months, to look back at the last 20 years,” he said, “and to look to see what we might have done differently, what we might have done sooner, what we might have done more effectively.  But I have to tell you that right now, my entire focus is on the mission at hand.”
Today, President Biden signed into law H.R. 3642, the “Harlem Hellfighters Congressional Gold Medal Act,” giving the Congressional Gold Medal to the 369th Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the “Harlem Hellfighters,” in recognition of their bravery and outstanding service during World War I.
In that war, the 369th Infantry was made up of 2000 Black men, 70% of whom were from Harlem. Since many white men in Jim Crow America refused to serve with their Black comrades, army leaders assigned the unit to the French Army, where, although they still wore the U.S. uniform, they were outfitted with French weapons.
Sent into the field, they stayed out for 191 days, the longest combat deployment of any unit in the war. At the Second Battle of the Marne and Meuse-Argonne, the unit had some of the worst casualties of that mangling war, suffering 144 dead and about 1,000 wounded. “My men never retire, they go forward or they die,” said their commander, Colonel William Hayward. Germans called them the “Bloodthirsty Black Men.” The French called them “hell-fighters.” A month after the armistice, the French government awarded the entire 369th the Croix de Guerre.
And now, in 2021, the unit has, at long last, been awarded a U.S. Congressional Gold Medal.
Sometimes it takes a while, but accurate history has a way of coming out.

Charles Drew
Tumblr media
Charles Richard Drew (June 3, 1904 – April 1, 1950) was an American surgeon and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II. This allowed medics to save thousands of lives of the Allied forces. As the most prominent African American in the field, Drew protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood, as it lacked scientific foundation, and resigned his position with the American Red Cross, which maintained the policy until 1950.
Early life and education
Drew was born in 1904 into an African-American middle-class family in Washington, D.C. His father, Richard, was a carpet layer and his mother, Nora Burrell, trained as a teacher. Drew and three of his four younger siblings grew up in Washington's largely middle-class and interracial Foggy Bottom neighborhood. From 1920 until his marriage in 1939, Drew's permanent address was in Arlington County, Virginia, although he graduated from Washington's Dunbar High School in 1922 and usually resided elsewhere during that period of time.
Drew won an athletics scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts, from which he graduated in 1926. An outstanding athlete at Amherst, Drew also joined Omega Psi Phi fraternity as an off-campus member; Amherst fraternities did not admit blacks at that time. After college, Drew spent two years (1926–1928) as a professor of chemistry and biology, the first athletic director, and football coach at the historically black private Morgan College in Baltimore, Maryland, to earn the money to pay for medical school.
Drew attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he achieved membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, a scholastic honor society for medical students, ranked second in his graduating class of 127 students, and received the standard Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery degree awarded by the McGill University Faculty of Medicine in 1933.
Drew's first appointment as a faculty instructor was for pathology at Howard University from 1935 to 1936. He then joined Freedman's Hospital, a federally operated facility associated with Howard University, as an instructor in surgery and an assistant surgeon. In 1938, Drew began graduate work at Columbia University in New York City on the award of a two-year Rockefeller fellowship in surgery. He then began postgraduate work, earning his Doctor of Science in Surgery at Columbia University. He spent time doing research at Columbia's Presbyterian Hospital and gave a doctoral thesis, "Banked Blood," based on an exhaustive study of blood preservation techniques. He earned a Doctor of Science in Medicine degree in 1940, becoming the first African American to do so.
Blood for Britain
In late 1940, before the U.S. entered World War II and just after earning his doctorate, Drew was recruited by John Scudder to help set up and administer an early prototype program for blood storage and preservation. He was to collect, test, and transport large quantities of blood plasma for distribution in the United Kingdom. Drew went to New York City as the medical director of the United States' Blood for Britain project. The Blood for Britain project was a project to aid British soldiers and civilians by giving U.S. blood to the United Kingdom.
Drew started what would be later known as bloodmobiles, which were trucks containing refrigerators of stored blood; this allowed for greater mobility in terms of transportation as well as prospective donations.
Drew created a central location for the blood collection process where donors could go to give blood. He made sure all blood plasma was tested before it was shipped out. He ensured that only skilled personnel handled blood plasma to avoid the possibility of contamination. The Blood for Britain program operated successfully for five months, with total collections of almost 15,000 people donating blood, and with over 5,500 vials of blood plasma. As a result, the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association applauded Drew for his work.
American Red Cross Blood Bank
Out of Drew's work, he was appointed director of the first American Red Cross Blood Bank in February 1941. The blood bank being in charge of blood for use by the U.S. Army and Navy, he disagreed with the exclusion of the blood of African-Americans from plasma-supply networks. In 1942, Drew resigned from his posts after the armed forces ruled that the blood of African-Americans would be accepted but would have to be stored separately from that of whites.
Academic career
In 1941, Drew's distinction in his profession was recognized when he became the first African-American surgeon selected to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery.
Drew had a lengthy research and teaching career, returning to Freedman's Hospital and Howard University as a surgeon and professor of medicine in 1942. He was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP in 1944 for his work on the British and American projects. He was given an honorary doctor of science degree, first by Virginia State College in 1945 then by Amherst in 1947.
Personal life
In 1939, Drew married Minnie Lenore Robbins, a professor of home economics at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, whom he had met earlier during that year. They had three daughters and a son. His daughter Charlene Drew Jarvis served on Council of the District of Columbia from 1979 to 2000, was the president of Southeastern University from 1996 until 2009 and was a president of the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce.
Death
Beginning in 1939, Drew traveled to Tuskegee, Alabama to attend the annual free clinic at the John A. Andrew Memorial Hospital. For the 1950 Tuskegee clinic, Drew drove along with three other black physicians. Drew was driving around 8 a.m. on April 1. Still fatigued from spending the night before in the operating theater, he lost control of the vehicle. After careening into a field, the car somersaulted three times. The three other physicians suffered minor injuries. Drew was trapped with serious wounds; his foot had become wedged beneath the brake pedal. When reached by emergency technicians, he was in shock and barely alive due to severe leg injuries.
Drew was taken to Alamance General Hospital in Burlington, North Carolina. He was pronounced dead a half hour after he first received medical attention. Drew's funeral was held on April 5, 1950, at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
Despite a popular myth to the contrary, once repeated on an episode ("Dear Dad... Three") of the hit TV series M*A*S*H, Drew's death was not the result of his having been refused a blood transfusion because of his skin color. This myth spread very quickly since during his time it was very common for blacks to be refused treatment because there were not enough "Negro beds" available or the nearest hospital only serviced whites. In truth, according to one of the passengers in Drew's car, John Ford, Drew's injuries were so severe that virtually nothing could have been done to save him. Ford added that a blood transfusion might have actually killed Drew sooner.
Legacy
In 1976, the National Park Service designated the Charles Richard Drew House in Arlington County, Virginia, as a National Historic Landmark in response to a nomination by the Afro-American Bicentennial Corporation.
In 1981, the United States Postal Service issued a 35¢ postage stamp in its Great Americans series to honor Drew.

Ribbons and pins
For quite many people were reading and took part on my help-needed-post, maybe you guys are interested in some further information about the ribbons and the pins? Yeah, I think you are =) You have a little to read, but maybe you are fascinated as well ;)
Bronze Star Medal
Tumblr media
The Bronze Star medal is awarded to members of the US Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. Civilians serving with U.S. military forces in combat are also eligible for the award (for example, UPI reporter Joe Galloway was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" Device during the Vietnam War for rescuing a badly wounded soldier under fire in the Battle of la Drang, in 1965; another civilian recipient was writer Ernest Hemingway).
It was established and first awarded on  4. February 1944.
It was designed by Rudolf Freund (1878–1960) of the jewelry firm Bailey, Banks & Biddle, who also designed the Silver Star, the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart and they updated the todays Great Seal of the United States.
Purple Heart
Tumblr media
The Purple Heart is the next lower to the Bronze Star medal. It is warded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after 5. April 1917, with the US military. With its forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to US military members – the only earlier award being the obsolete Fidelity Medallion.
It was first awarded on 22. February 1932.
Legion of Merrit
Tumblr media
Looks like I confused the Purple Heart with the Legion of Merit, I thought they are the same, but they aren´t. The color is different as you can see, as well as the meaning of the award itself.
The Legion of Merit is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The decoration is issued to members of the seven uniformed services of the US as well as to military and political figures of foreign governments. The Legion of Merit (Commander degree) is one of only two United States military decorations to be issued as a neck order (the other being the Medal of Honor) and the only US military decoration that may be issued in award degrees (much like an order of chivalry or certain Orders of Merit), although the degrees including a neck riband are only awarded to non-U.S. nationals.
The Legion of Merit was first awarded in 1942.
Good Conduct Medal
Tumblr media
The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military awards of the US Armed Forces. It is currently awarded to any active duty enlisted member of the US military who completes three consecutive years of “honorable and faithful service”. Such service implies that a standard enlistment was completed without any non-judicial punishment, disciplinary infractions or court martial offenses. Alternate pilot pin: Vietnam Veteran Tet-Offensive Survivor pin
Tumblr media
The Tet-Offensive, or officially called The General Offensive and Uprising of Tet Mau Than 1968, was one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam war. It was launched on 30. January 1968 by forces of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese People´s Army of Vietnam against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army of Vietnam, the US Armed Forces and their allies. The term “Tet-Offensive” usually refers to the January-February 1968 offensive, but it can also include other phases of this offensive.
I couldn´t find any infos what this pin was really awarded for, but for it is called Vietnam Survivor pin I guess it was awarded for veterans who served and survived the above mentioned offensives in the Vietnam Tet-Offensive.
As @kazashiniwielder already told, it doesn´t make much sense that John got this award. SPN-wiki says John was born in 1954, so he would have been the age of 14 when the Tet-Offensive occured and whould have joined the marines at the earliest around 1972.
Infos taken from wikipedia.org, patchquartermaster.com and ursrucker.com.
I hope the post didn´t bore you too much to read. For me it was very interesting to learn more about the awards I use in my journal replica =)

audie murphy was 5′5.5″, 112 lbs and 17 when he enlisted in the us army. initially he was knocked back by both the marines and the army for being underweight and underage, but he changed his diet to bulk up and his sister supplied the army with an affidavit that falsified his birthdate by a year.
‘While participating in a close-order drill during that hot Texas summer, he passed out. His company commander thought his build was too slight for service in the infantry, and tried to have him transferred to a cook and bakers' school, but Murphy insisted on becoming a combat soldier.’
audie murphy went on to receive a medal of honor, a distinguished service cross, two silver stars, two legion of merit bronze stars, three purple hearts, a good conduct medal, two presidential unit citations, an american campaign medal, ten european-african-middle eastern campaign medals, a world war ii victory medal, an army of occupation medal, the french legion of honor award, three french croix de guerres, a belgian croix de guerre, a combat infantryman badge, an outstanding civilian service medal and a texas legislative medal of honor.

Tumblr media
UDHAMPUR: The Army‘s northern commander Lt Gen Y K Joshi on Saturday said the agreement between India and Pakistan to strictly adhere to the ceasefire pact along the Line of Control (LoC) would have no bearing on the counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. He said the northern command, which looks after the security of the twin union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, remained on the highest alert and made possible what was believed impossible by the bravery, grit and determination of its personnel in the face of challenging situations along the border. “Recently, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan have announced an agreement to uphold ceasefire along the LoC from February 24 and 25 midnight. I want to assure that this ceasefire will have no bearing on the counter-terrorist operations and we will maintain our alertness,” Lt Gen Joshi said at the northern command investiture ceremony here. During the ceremony, the Army commander presented two Bar to Sena medals (gallantry) and 50 Sena medals (gallantry) to the brave soldiers. He also presented three Sena medals (distinguished) and six Vishisht Seva medals for selfless service to the nation. Lt Gen Joshi also awarded unit appreciation to 26 units for their overall outstanding performance in the command theatre. “The northern command has always stood like a shield against the attempts by our neighbouring countries to spread disturbance and it will continue to remain so in the future. Whenever anyone raises an evil eye on our country, Indian Army has replied strongly,” Lt Gen Joshi said. Without naming China and Pakistan, he said Indian Army has maintained its domination on its borders with the neighbouring countries and helped in maintaining peace in the hinterland. Referring to the eastern Ladakh standoff with the Chinese army, he said Indian Army stood up to the challenge on the snow-capped mountains of the Line of Actual Control during the challenging situation in 2020 and maintained the highest alert. “Our action is a glaring example of our training, bravery and pledge (to safeguard the borders) and it will be written in history with golden words. The northern command made possible what seemed impossible. The success of the operation (in Ladakh) is the glaring example of the bravery of Indian Army,” he said. He said 2020 was historic in many ways for the Army which demonstrated its mettle in eastern Ladakh by its “grit, determination, self-confidence, bravery and steadfastness”. He said there has been a tremendous improvement in the basic deployment and preparedness and the efforts in this direction will continue. “The measures we have put in to strengthen our defences, the same efforts were made to maintain peace,” he said. In Kashmir, he said, the overall security situation saw a great improvement in the previous year as there has been a considerable reduction in terrorist-initiated incidents, stone-pelting activities and protests as a result of tireless efforts of the security forces and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said the Army also played a key role in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. “Under ‘Seva Paramo Dharma’, Army doctors, nursing staff, ambulance and medical corps staff without caring for their lives worked round-the-clock and are continuously doing so,” he said. He congratulated those who were decorated for their bravery and conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the brave men who made the supreme sacrifice on the borders, including at Galwan Valley, and in the battle against internal security challenges. Lt Col Joshi urged all ranks, ex-servicemen, civilians and their families to rededicate themselves to the cause of the nation.

By that point, the clouds stopping Allied air assaults had damaged, and Nazi reinforcements might solely proceed by evening, significantly decreasing German means to counterattack and guaranteeing the success of the touchdown.
The Climate Forecast Performed A Decisive Function In D-Day’s Success
Tumblr media
As a result of D-Day relied so closely on points surrounding climate, tides, cloud cowl, and moonlight, solely sure days might be thought-about for the invasion. Initially, Allied meteorologists chosen June 5, 1944, as essentially the most advantageous day for the assault. Nonetheless, tough seas, excessive waves, and excessive cloud cowl might be sufficient on their very own to make sure the failure of the operation. On June 4, British army meteorologist James Stagg overruled his employees and really useful a postponement of the invasion till June 6. He believed {that a} 12-hour window would open that will enable for the invasion to proceed however was sure that June 5 could be a catastrophe. Different forecasters believed that the invasion ought to be postponed till a date two weeks later within the hopes that the climate would possibly enhance. In 1944, there have been not one of the climate satellites or expertise that exist right this moment, solely anecdotal proof gathered from varied vantage factors within the British Isles and the Atlantic.
The last word resolution could be made by Common Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied forces. He gambled on the 12-hour window and hoped that Stagg was right. Whereas June 6 was not good, the invasion was capable of proceed, and a window of barely higher climate prevented the local weather from being an element within the invasion. Sadly for the Germans, their chief Luftwaffe meteorologist didn’t have entry to Stagg’s wealth of knowledge, and his forecast was for persistently dangerous climate that will forestall an invasion for at the least a number of weeks. The German excessive command operated underneath this notion, one of many causes that they had been caught off guard when the invasion started.
Erwin Rommel Was At Dwelling In Germany, Celebrating His Spouse’s Birthday
Tumblr media
One of many people who might need performed a serious position in efficiently repelling the Allied invasion was Discipline Marshall Erwin Rommel. An excellent tactician nicknamed “The Desert Fox” for his exploits through the Nazi marketing campaign in North Africa, Rommel was reassigned to oversee the protection of the “Atlantic Wall,” the protection system applied by Germany to defend towards any invasion. Rommel had spent many of the earlier 5 years away from his spouse and son and needed to briefly return house to have a good time his spouse’s 50th birthday. He even bought a pair of footwear in Paris for the event. When his employees, based mostly on optimistically incorrect climate reviews, assured him that the Allies couldn’t probably assault anyplace on the French coast, he took the chance to return to Germany. Different senior officers had been ordered to take part in a struggle recreation train that additionally took them away from the rapid area of battle. Knowledgeable of the assault in the early morning of June 6, Rommel rushed again to the entrance and managed to reach that night. By then, the Allies had secured the beachhead at Normandy, and Rommel was powerless to cease the invasion.
Secret Code Phrases From The Invasion Mysteriously Appeared In A Crossword Puzzle In Advance
Tumblr media
In Might of 1944, a member of Britain’s intelligence service, MI5, was observant sufficient to identify the reply “Utah” in a crossword puzzle in a big circulation London newspaper, The Day by day Telegraph. Initially dismissed as a coincidence, brokers had been shocked when, inside a number of weeks and solely days earlier than the deliberate D-Day invasion, the phrases Omaha, Overlord, Mulberry, and Neptune all appeared as solutions in the identical Day by day Telegraph crossword. All of those names had been secret phrases carefully related to the upcoming invasion. Safety companies shortly hauled within the composer of the crossword puzzles, Leonard Dawe, who turned out to be a headmaster at an area non-public college, The Strand College. Regardless of an intense interrogation that Dawe refused to explain till many years later, finally MI5 was glad that he was not an enemy agent.
However the thriller of how the phrases wound up within the puzzles remained. In 1984, one among Dawe’s college students on the time, Ronald French, wrote to the paper to elucidate that the headmaster would have his courses give him random phrases that he would then embrace in his puzzles. As a result of the scholars routinely socialized and had been uncovered to servicemen of their neighborhoods, they naturally picked up on a few of the phrases that these troopers repeatedly used. French thought it could be intelligent to incorporate these phrases within the crossword and gave them to the unwitting headmaster. After his interrogation, Dawe supposedly confronted French, who admitted what he had achieved. Sadly, by the point French contacted the Telegraph, Dawe was lengthy gone, and lots of are nonetheless skeptical of this rationalization for the outstanding D-Day crossword puzzle coincidence.
Ted Roosevelt Jr. Was The Solely Common In The Preliminary Wave
Tumblr media
Theodore Roosevelt Jr., son of President Roosevelt, was initially instructed that, due to a coronary heart situation and arthritis, he wouldn’t take part within the precise D-Day invasion. Roosevelt – armed with solely a pistol and a cane – insisted and got here ashore with the primary wave of troops at Utah Seaside, the one basic to take action. Touchdown a mile away from his meant location, Roosevelt improvised a route inland after personally reconnoitering the realm behind the seashore. He would stay on the seashore for the remainder of the day, directing subsequent waves of troops to their improvised areas. Ignoring bullets and explosions that occurred in his neighborhood, Roosevelt remained a relaxing affect on the apprehensive troopers who got here ashore. Requested later to single out essentially the most heroic act he noticed throughout his profession, Common Omar Bradley responded: “Ted Roosevelt at Utah Seaside.” Ted Roosevelt Jr. died of a coronary heart assault one month after D-Day, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, and is buried within the American cemetery close to the Normandy beachhead
Two Medics Risked Their Lives To Heroically Present Care
Tumblr media
One of many lesser recognized tales of D-Day entails two American medics who offered help to each Allied and German troopers who had been introduced into their tiny church sanctuary. Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore had been parachuted behind German traces within the early hours of the D-Day invasion. Touchdown with different paratroopers close to Utah Seaside, their unit’s goal was a highway junction close to the French hamlet of Angoville-Au-Plain. Wright and Moore chosen essentially the most logical close by construction to arrange their medic station, the village church. For 3 days, they tended to many wounded – together with French civilians and even Germans – injured within the fierce preventing across the church. German panzer counterattacks finally pushed American troops away from Angoville-Au-Plain, however the medics determined to remain and proceed to take care of the numerous troopers counting on them. A number of occasions, German SS personnel angrily entered the church, intent on capturing the wounded Individuals inside however left when confronted with Wright and Moore additionally tending to significantly injured German troopers. Finally, a Purple Cross banner was positioned in entrance of the constructing, indicating to each side that the makeshift hospital ought to be left alone. Even so, there have been many anxious moments for Wright and Moore, together with an unexploded mortar shell that landed within the heart of the church and didn’t explode. One of many medics shortly picked up the projectile, ran exterior, and tossed it right into a area, regardless of the potential for the shell detonating at any second.
Halfway by means of the ordeal, two German snipers who had been hidden within the steeple, realized that they had been drawing hearth to the church and surrendered to the astonished Wright and Moore. On June 8, the Germans had been safely pushed out of the realm, the medics having saved over 80 lives within the interim. Finally, the destroyed stained glass home windows had been changed with memorials to each the 101st Airborne and the medics themselves. The pews of the church stay bloodstained, and the cracked ground sq. the place the mortar shell landed remains to be seen. Kenneth Moore and Robert Wright had been each awarded the Silver Star. When he died, the townspeople of Angoville-Au-Plain honored Wright’s request and buried him within the church graveyard.
Confronted With The Not possible, Rangers At Pointe-Du-Hoc Have been The First to Full Their Mission On D-Day
Tumblr media
One of many hardest targets handed out on D-Day was the mission to knock out the German 155mm batteries on the promontory of Pointe-Du-Hoc. American airborne Rangers could be given the duty of scaling the cliff-side location virtually 100 ft right into a nest of closely fortified bunkers and pillboxes defending the German artillery, which was a risk to each the lads on the seashores and the ships at sea. Solely half of the designated Ranger assault power reached the bottom of the cliffs. Late and disorganized, they had been by no means capable of sign the secondary group, which was then diverted to Omaha Seaside, probably saving that effort. Regardless of the lack of manpower, the Rangers started the method of ascending the seawall, accompanied by artillery shelling from Allied destroyers that offered cowl. The Rangers shortly obtained to the highest, subdued or repelled any defenders, and had been shocked to seek out that the gun emplacements contained solely phone poles, positioned there to idiot Allied reconnaissance.
Thankfully, tire tracks result in the brand new German artillery place, and the Rangers shortly disabled the 155mm weapons with grenades. By 9 am, they had been capable of sign that that they had reached their goal, the primary Allied unit to efficiently full their mission. Sadly, the Germans would furiously counterattack for the following two days, the Rangers remoted and unable to be resupplied from the water and trapped towards the cliffs by German models. The one reinforcements had been three American paratroopers who landed off track and by some means made it by means of German traces to the Rangers’ place. The Rangers would maintain their place till the morning of June 8, when different Ranger models and armored infantry drove the Germans from the neighborhood. By then, two thirds of the preliminary Ranger group that had climbed the cliffs had both been captured, wounded, or killed.
Omaha Seaside May Have Been Worse
Tumblr media
All through 1944, a philosophical battle came about between Common Rommel and different members of the German basic employees. Rommel firmly believed that the Allies ought to be prevented from touchdown and establishing a beachhead anyplace on the coast of France. Different officers believed that troops ought to be held in reserve and shortly rushed in to counterattack and wipe out any invasion. Regardless of Rommel’s particular orders to the 352nd Infantry Division to maneuver its 5 artillery and 10 infantry battalions of the division to the neighborhood of the Omaha beachhead, Rommel’s subordinates ignored these commands and positioned all however two infantry and one artillery battalions in reserve, extra in step with German excessive command technique. Whereas the Omaha Seaside touchdown was essentially the most tough and dear of the 5 invasion factors, it might have been a lot worse – and might need even jeopardized your complete invasion – had your complete German functionality at Omaha Seaside been utilized to stop a linkup of the Allies within the early days of the invasion.
The Theater Of Battle Was 50 Miles Vast
Tumblr media
Subsequent movies and dramatizations of D-Day are typically restricted in portraying the scope of the scale of the D-Day invasion. A lot of the main focus of movies like Saving Personal Ryan is a small stretch of seashore and a small variety of people engaged in their very own private battle. However D-Day concerned an assault that consisted of near 75,000 infantry, paratroopers, and assist personnel that will land on or behind 5 separate seashore areas designated by the Allies. These designated websites had been code named “Juno,” “Sword,” “Gold,” “Omaha,” and “Utah.” The seashores comprised an space that stretched for over 50 miles.
A Gown Rehearsal For D-Day Was A Full Catastrophe
Tumblr media
5 weeks earlier than D-Day, on April 28, 1944, an Allied group of ships and amphibious autos had been shifting slowly within the English Channel to arrange for his or her participation in “Exercise Tiger,” a dry run of the amphibious effort that will represent a big a part of the deliberate D-Day invasion. When an enormous improve in radio visitors tipped off German naval property within the neighborhood that one thing main was occurring, Nazi torpedo patrol boats had been dispatched to the realm with deadly outcomes. They started torpedoing the amphibious LST touchdown craft that had been jammed with American troopers, forcing survivors of the assault to desert ship, many with improperly applied life vests that every one however ensured drowning. In all, 749 individuals within the fiasco died, the most costly coaching train of the struggle. The catastrophe was coated up by the army, to attenuate lack of morale and keep away from additional tipping off the Germans to the upcoming invation. Moreover, each Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill had been so involved by this failure that that they had grave doubts about D-Day itself.
Ike Returned To The D-Day Battlefield Solely As soon as
Tumblr media
President Eisenhower visited the American cemetery and the D-Day battlefield solely as soon as after World Conflict II. This was not the results of indifference; quite, it was Ike’s inability to control his emotions when publicly talking concerning the sacrifice and braveness of the lads he despatched to Normandy and the heroes who by no means returned. In contrast to subsequent Presidents, who used D-Day as a photo-op, Eisenhower additionally didn’t need to be perceived as aggrandizing himself on the expense of the rank and file troopers who unselfishly gave their lives throughout battle. Nonetheless, after his Presidency, Eisenhower returned to the D-Day battlefield and the American cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the invasion.
Atrocities Have been Widespread On Each Sides On D-Day
Tumblr media
D-Day was the right storm to brew the horrors of war and brutal war crimes that had been dedicated by each Allied and Nazi troops. Most of the German models deployed in Normandy had been battle-hardened Waffen-SS with expertise on the Jap Entrance, the place POWs and civilians had been routinely and methodically executed. Canadian troops had been additionally embittered by their fellow countrymen’s expertise on the failed 1942 commando raid at Dieppe, through which Canadian prisoners had been subsequently murdered by their German captors.
These attitudes, mixed with the chaos of a frantic and complicated army state of affairs, didn’t bode nicely for the organized and humane remedy of prisoners. Nearly 200 Canadian prisoners had been executed within the first two days of the D-Day invasion, their continuously mutilated our bodies often retrieved en masse leaving little question as to how they died, a improvement that solely enraged Allied troops and perpetuated the violence. SS troops, infamous for his or her cruelty, had been hardly ever discovered to have been taken prisoner, continuously formally shot “whereas attempting to flee.” German snipers particularly focused troopers carrying a Purple Cross armband, understanding that they had been offering help to already wounded and probably dying troopers. These had been simply a few of the callous attitudes that contributed to the virtually 500,000 troopers killed on each side through the D-Day invasion.
D-Day Was Adopted By A Two-Month Stalemate
Tumblr media
Regardless of the preliminary success, the D-Day invasion would not result in a rapid consolidation and an instantly profitable sweep throughout France. Allied troops would lavatory down within the swampy and intentionally flooded space on the Normandy peninsula. The normal tall hedgerows that farmers in Normandy used to frame their farmlands additionally proved to be an ideal vantage level for German defenders and an impediment for Allied tanks. City areas additionally needed to be captured and neutralized on a house-by-house foundation, a pricey and well timed course of. Most of the models going through the Allies had been SS models, essentially the most fanatical within the German army. It will not be till mid-August that Allied forces would start to overwhelm cussed resistance and power a German retreat behind the Seine River. Inside months, Allied forces recaptured most of France and had been poised to enter Germany itself.
Star Trek’s Unique “Scotty” Was Wounded on D-Day
Tumblr media
On June 6, a Canadian named James Doohan got here ashore on Juno Seaside as a member of the third Canadian Infantry Division. Doohan was capable of survive the preliminary assault, however, after dusk, he was unintentionally shot six occasions by one other Canadian sentry. Thankfully, one of many bullets hit a cigarette case, which stopped it from going into his chest, however one other hit him within the hand, forcing the amputation of a finger. The remaining 4 went into his leg.
After the struggle, Doohan used his distinctive voice for appearing and radio work and finally grew to become a continuously forged character actor on Canadian and American tv. He would finally get hold of the position of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott on the TV present Star Trek, his versatility with accents permitting him to face out and to carry depth to the position. He all the time hid his lacking finger throughout taping, most viewers unaware of the heroic background of the person who made the phrase “Beam me up, Scotty,” the watchwords of a technology.

Military Awards And Decorations For Outstanding Service
Tumblr media
Military awards and decorations are a distinction given as a mark of honor for bravery and military heroism, meritorious or outstanding service or achievement. It is often a medal consisting of a ribbon and a medallion.
While the United States Government does not consider all its military awards and medals as being "decorations", other countries tend to refer to all their military awards and medals as "decorations". Civil decorations awarded to military personnel should not be considered military decorations, although some orders of chivalry have civil and military divisions. Decorations received by police and fire brigade personnel may sometimes be considered alongside military decoration, on which they may be modelled, although they are strictly not military awards.
The 5 Highest-Ranking U.S. Military Medals
These are the five highest ranking medals for bravery in combat include the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), the Navy Cross, the Air Force Cross and the Silver Star Medal. According to The Institute of Heraldry, these awards are also referred to as “decorations” because of the the personal nature associated with the qualifications for each medal, and are not awarded the same as a campaign or service medal.
While each is awarded for demonstrated acts of gallantry in combat operations against a known enemy of the United States of America, there are specific criteria for each, as well as specific levels of approval and presentation. The DSC, Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross are all equivalent service medals and are displayed as such.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded for valor and is the only one approved by the U.S. Congress for presentation by the President of the United States, in the name of Congress. It is only awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call to duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United State.
The Medal of Honor was originally designed during the Civil War and presented for valiant efforts to the Union forces during battle. Today, the Medal of Honor is presented with a ribbon, five stars (two on top, three in the middle) and a six-sided rosette bearing 13 stars, displayed when the medal is not worn on the recipient’s uniform or on civilian attire, as appropriate. There are three distinct versions of the Medal of Honor: one for the U.S. Army, one for the U.S. Air Force and one for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, each with their own design.
The Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross are all the second highest military medal award for valor, awarded to each specific military service component for extraordinary heroism while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The actions of the awardee must be of such a high degree that they are above all other combat decorations, yet do not merit the awarding of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The Distinguished Service Cross (Army), the Navy Cross (Navy), and the Air Force Cross (Air Force) are ranked as the second highest award for valor. Each medal is awarded to members of their respective branches for extraordinary.
The Secretary of the Army awards the Distinguished Service Cross, DSC, upon Soldiers of the U.S. Army, the Secretary of the Navy confers the Navy Cross on the services of a Sailor, Marine or Coast Guardsman and the Secretary of the Air Force confers the Air Force Cross on Airmen, all by the authority of Congress.
The Silver Star Medal, or the Silver Star, is the third highest military combat award presented to a service member of the U.S. Armed Forces for gallantry, for instance, per the AFPC, “while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.” The actions of the recipient are of high degree but do not merit awarding the Congressional Medal of Honor or a service-specific cross (DSC, the Navy Cross or the Air Force Cross).
Medals of America salutes those who have served our nation, faithfully and selflessly, and offers a heartfelt thank you to those brave Americans who have placed their lives between the enemy and the ones whom they serve with in combat. You are brave, and we are the land of the free because of your demonstrated gallantry and valor!

Daniel “Chappie” James
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. (February 11, 1920 – February 25, 1978) was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, who in 1975 became the first African American to reach the rank of four-star general. He is the third person of Sub-Saharan origin to become highest-ranking officer in the Western world after Thomas-Alexandre Dumas (1793) and Toussaint Louverture (1797).
World War II
James graduated from the Tuskegee University in 1942 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He continued civilian pilot training under the government-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program. He remained at Tuskegee as a civilian instructor pilot in the Army Air Corps later that July. Throughout the remainder of the war James trained pilots for the all-black 99th Pursuit Squadron. He did not see combat himself until the Korean War.
Korean War
In September 1949, James went to the Philippines as flight leader for the 12th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Wing at Clark Field. In July 1950 he left for Korea, where he flew 101 combat missions in P-51 Mustang and F-80 aircraft.
James returned to the United States, and in July 1951 went to Otis Air Force Base, Massachusetts as an all-weather jet fighter pilot with the 58th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, later becoming operations officer. In April 1953 he became commander of the 437th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, and assumed command of the 60th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron in August 1955. While stationed at Otis, he received the Massachusetts Junior Chamber of Commerce 1954 award of "Young Man of the Year" for his outstanding community relations efforts. On August 15, 1954 he appeared as a contestant on the game show What's My Line? He graduated from the Air Command and Staff College in June 1957.
James next was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as a staff officer in the Air Defense Division of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. In July 1960 he was transferred to RAF Bentwaters in England, where he served successively as assistant director of operations and then director of operations, 81st Tactical Fighter Wing; commander, 92nd Tactical Fighter Squadron; and deputy commander for operations for the 81st Wing. In September 1964 James was transferred to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, where he was director of operations training and later deputy commander for operations for the 4453rd Combat Crew Training Wing.
Vietnam War
James went to Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in December 1966, as deputy commander for operations, 8th TFW. In June 1967, under Colonel Robin Olds, he was named wing vice commander when Col. Vermont Garrison completed his tour. Both in their mid-40s, they formed a legendary team nicknamed "Blackman and Robin." James flew 78 combat missions into North Vietnam, many in the Hanoi/Haiphong area, and led a flight in the "Operation Bolo" MiG sweep in which seven Communist MiG-21s were destroyed, the highest total kill of any mission during the Vietnam War.
He was named vice commander of the 33rd TFW at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in December 1967. While stationed at Eglin, the Florida State Jaycees named James as Florida's "Outstanding American of the Year" for 1969, and he received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award. He was transferred to Wheelus Air Base in the Libyan Arab Republic in August 1969 as Commander of the 7272nd Fighter Training Wing.
James became Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) in March 1970 and was designated principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) in April 1973. On September 1, 1974, he assumed duty as vice commander of the Military Airlift Command (MAC), headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
James was promoted to four-star grade and assigned as commander in chief of NORAD/ADCOM at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, on September 1, 1975. In these dual capacities he had operational command of all United States and Canadian strategic aerospace defense forces. On December 6, 1977, he assumed duty as special assistant to the Chief of Staff, U.S. Air Force.
General James was widely known for his speeches on Americanism and patriotism, for which he was editorialized in numerous national and international publications.
When asked his views on the growing Civil Rights Movement after having to make an emergency landing in North Vietnam, he answered, "Look, friend, I'm really not interested in all of that, really. See I consider myself damned lucky to have been able to land my airplane at this emergency strip in one piece." Being asked about militants like H. Rap Brown and Stokely Carmichael, who implied that blacks ought to fight at home rather than in Vietnam, also angered James, with him stating "...the lawlessness, rioting, men like Stokely Carmichael acting as if they speak for the Negro people. They aren't, and set civil rights back 100 years!" James even removed his Black Panther emblem from his helmet since it had become associated with a movement he no longer identified with. Excerpts from some of the speeches have been read into the Congressional Record.
The statements by James in which he repudiated the most militant point of view endeared him to concerned whites, including President Johnson, who invited him to a White House reception. Immediately after the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and as riots erupted in several areas across the country, James addressed a gathering of Air Force Association officers at which he declared that in spite of events and the resistance to progress, 'I'm not disgusted-I'm a citizen of the United States of America and I'm no second-class citizen either and no man here is, unless he thinks like one and reasons like one and performs like one. This is my country and I believe in her and I to her welfare whenever and however I can. If she has any ills, I'll stand by her until in God's given time, through her wisdom and her consideration for the welfare of the entire nation, she will put them right."
He was awarded the George Washington Freedom Foundation Medal in both 1967 and 1968. He received the Arnold Air Society Eugene M. Zuckert Award in 1970 for outstanding contributions to Air Force professionalism. His citation read "... fighter pilot with a magnificent record, public speaker, and eloquent spokesman for the American Dream we so rarely achieve."
Libya
One of Chappie James's most dangerous moments came when he was assigned to command Wheelus Air Base in Libya. in 1969 Colonel Muammar Gaddafi overran the gates at Wheelus Air Base and had an Old West style standoff with James. With both men packing pistols on their hips James told Gaddafi, "Move your hand away from that gun!" Gaddafi complied and pulled back. Afterwards, the United States was unable to reach an agreement with Gaddafi and agreed to vacate Wheelus. During the final negotiations, a team of Libyan officers brought along a soldier with a submachine gun into James's living room. James asserted himself and the soldier vanished. Chappie then soon left Libya.
Retirement and death
General James died of a heart attack on February 25, 1978, just two weeks after his 58th birthday and three weeks following his retirement from the Air Force.

General James met his wife Dorothy while he was at Tuskegee Institute and they were married on the campus on November 3,1942. They had two sons and one daughter. His wife Dorothy died on May 2, 2000, and is buried with him in Arlington National Cemetery. General James's son, Lieutenant General Daniel James III, also served in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot and in the Texas Air National Guard. He served from 1995 to 2002 as the Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard (the first African American to hold the post), and as Director of the Air National Guard from 2002 to 2006. In the summer of 2006, he retired from the Air Force at the rank of Lieutenant General after 38 years of total commissioned service, on active duty and as an Air Guardsman.
A Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star is on display at Otis Air National Guard Base (former Otis AFB) in Massachusetts with General James' name written under the cockpit.
The James Sports Center at Scott AFB, Illinois, is named after General James and there is plaque that was dedicated on February 12, 1979.
