[slide 2] From day one, we were treated differently: the celebrations

Hamas is an internationally-recognized terrorist organization that is explicit in its aim to annihilate Israel and the Jewish people in its very foundational charter. On October 7, 2023, thousands of Hamas terrorists invaded internationally-recognized sovereign Israeli territory and slaughtered 1,200 people in a matter of hours, the majority of them civilians. They went door to door, pulling people from their beds, maiming, mutilating, beheading, raping, and burning entire families alive. About 80 of the corpses showed signs of torture. They also took over 200 people hostage, including Holocaust survivors and a 9-month-old. It was the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Israel is a small country; had October 7 happened in the US, it would be the equivalent of individually slaughtering 50,000 Americans in a matter of hours.

Instead of expressing outrage, there were worldwide celebrations. In the West Bank, Gaza, and elsewhere in the Arab world, candy was handed out on the streets in celebration. In Gaza, thousands gathered to cheer as terrorists paraded mutilated corpses. A group of 3000 United Nations teachers expressed their joy at the murder and mutilation of Israelis, including young children. All over left-wing social media, people celebrated.

On October 8, before any Israeli retaliation whatsoever, crowds of thousands gathered in Times Square to express their support for the murderers, holding signs that declared "decolonization is not a metaphor" and "by any means necessary".

Fringe extremists exist, but this was hardly the fringe. And we know this is not a normal reaction. We did not see entire protests in Times Square in support of the Russian slaughter of Ukranians, 9/11, the ISIS genocide of Yazidis, the slaughter of Yemenis, the slaughter of Syrians, or any other atrocity.

[slide 3] From Day one, we were treated differently: the contextualization and qualification

Secretary General of the United Nations Anthony Guterres' initial response to the October 7 massacre was the following: "It is important to also recognize the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum."

First, let me make one thing clear: there is no context, in international law or anywhere else, that justifies or minimizes the slaughter, torture, and rape of civilians, including women, children, those with disabilities, and the elderly.

But beyond that, there is a glaring double standard when Israel is the victim of a massacre. Let's take a look at another example of terrorism as a guideline. When ISIS bombed an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England on May 22, 2017, killing 22, Secretary General Guterres immediately "strongly condemned" the attack, and the Security Council released a statement, condemning "in the strongest terms the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attack" and extending its solidarity to the United Kingdom. No one said the attack had to be understood "in the context" of the UKs invasion of Iraq, the war against ISIS, or the UKs long history of colonialism in the region, and no one said that it did not happen in a vacuum.

Similarly, on October 7, millions of people rushed to social media to provide "context" for the cold-blooded, purposeful, and indiscriminate murder of civilians. Others, before their "condemnation" felt the need to clarify that they were not supporters of the Israeli government (okay, and?), when they've otherwise strongly condemned atrocities perpetrated on others, without feeling the need to qualify support (or lack thereof) for any other country's government.

[slide 4] From day one, we were treated differently: the victim blaming

On October 7, as the massacre was still unfolding, 31 Harvard University organizations released a statement holding Israel "entirely responsible" for the slaughter of its own citizens. I reiterate: as Israelis were still being slaughtered by the hundreds simply for being Jewish - or for being associated with Jews - we were told that our own slaughter was our fault.

They were not the only ones to do so. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria, Iran, and Iraq blamed Israel for the October 7 slaughter. Black Lives Matter Chicago blamed Israel for the October 7 slaughter. Labor unions across the US blamed Israel for the October 7 slaughter. The list goes on.

After the Israeli newspaper Haaretz published an article in which one anonymous police officer said that the police is looking into the possibility that some of the victims of the Nova music festival were killed by fire from an IDF military chopper, antisemites took the statement out of context, distorted it, and disseminated it all over the media and internet.

In response to the Haaretz article, the Israeli police put out a statement that the investigation was only in regard to police activities on October 7, not military activities, and that as such, they do not have any indication about the harm to any civilians due to any aerial activity there."

Regardless, the conspiracy has taken a life of its own, so much so that Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of carrying out the massacre. Abbas later retracted his statement. A few other unverified reports have also similarly taken out of context to "prove" that Israel was actually behind its own massacre.

To this day, we are told, in response to released hostage testimony that Israeli women are being raped in the Hamas tunnels, that it's justified because "they were soldiers." For what it's worth, no one's rape is justified - even when they're soldiers.

[slide 5] A few days later came the denial

The 10/7 massacre was live-streamed by the perpetrators on their own social media platforms.

Initially, antisemites celebrated. After more and more heinous, indefensible details started to come out, antisemites started denying it happened at all.

To reiterate: the massacre was live-streamed to social media - by the perpetrators. We all saw it in the early hours of October 7. The perpetrators have gone on to boast about it since. For example, on January 10, the leader of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, said, "We should hold on to the victory that took place on October 7 and build upon it."

The level of denial - just a few days after October 7 - is so pervasive that Israel had to compile a 47-minute film of footage with the most graphic, dehumanizing video evidence to screen for international reporters, government officials, and more.

But no amount of evidence seems to be enough. No independent investigators are enough. No video footage is enough. No survivor or eyewitness testimony is enough. Why are people denying what's before their very eyes? Why?

[slide 6] Then the one-sided demands.

From October 7, there were already demands on Israel - on Israel, as its civilians were massacred - to ceasefire. These demands came from important voices, including American Congresspeople, groups such as UNICEF, and more. These calls made little, if any, mention of Hamas, the perpetrator of the October 7 massacre.

No other country would be asked, as a slaughter of their people was still unfolding, to lay down their arms.

Since then, the calls for Israel - and only Israel - to ceasefire have been incessant. They have continued even as Hamas vowed, on October 24, that "there will be a second, a third, a fourth" October 7. When asked to clarify, in the same interview, whether they meant the complete annihilation of Israel, the senior Hamas official responded, "Yes, of course."

The calls for Israel to ceasefire continued as Yaha Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 massacre, promised on November 30 that "October 7 was just a rehearsal."

The calls for Israel to ceasefire continued as Hamas violated the terms of the temporary ceasefire every single day between November 24 and December 1.

The calls for Israel to ceasefire as Hamas has fired over 13,000 missiles at Israeli civilians. Even more infuriating, the calls for a ceasefire are often made hand in hand with calls to "globalize the Intifada." An intifada is an armed uprising; it's incompatible with a ceasefire.

The calls for Israel to ceasefire have continued as Hamas has rejected several ceasefires in the past several weeks. At this point, those calling for a ceasefire should be honest: what they care is that Israel ceases, but they are not particularly bothered (or even support) when Hamas fires.

[slide 7] The genocide accusations

There are 153 countries that have signed the Convention of 1948. Before this January, only two had ever been brought to trial before the International Court of Justice. Of the signatories, a number of them have been accused of genocidal acts after signing the Convention, including Azerbaijan, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and more.

Only Israel, however, is put on trial, which is all the more egregious when we consider that the events post-October 7 are in response to a massacre of Israelis that Genocide Watch classified as "an act of genocide."

What's even more egregious is that South Africa, which has brought this case before the ICJ, maintains close relationships with genocidal dictators, including Russia's Vladimir Putin and Sudan's Omar al-Bashir. It is a close ally of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hamas' patron, which has been brutally oppressing the people of Iran since 1979. South Africa even hosted Hamas officials for a "solidarity" event in December 2023 - two months after the October 7 massacre.

Per the Hamas Ministry of Health, 23,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza; Israel claims at least 9,000 of them are Hamas combatants. While any civilian death is tragic, there are far deadlier wars and atrocities happening around the globe right at this very second. In Yemen, nearly 400,000 have been killed and a million have died in a famine. In Syria, over 600,000 have been killed. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 6 million have been killed. In Ukraine, at least 100,000 have been killed. The list goes on and on. In many of these cases, the perpetrators of the atrocities - some of them South Africa's closest allies - have explicitly expressed genocidal intent. Yet South Africa hasn't found it necessary to bring them before the International Court of Justice. Only the Jewish state.

[slide 8] Feminist advocates are suddenly silent - or worse, accuse us of lying

Perhaps among the most infuriating responses to the October 7 massacre has been the response of so-called feminists and feminist organizations.

On October 7, and every day since, Hamas weaponized rape as a tool of war, which is not only a war crime, but a crime against humanity. There is a preponderance of evidence, including extensive forensic evidence, eyewitness testimony, perpetrator confessions, and survivor testimony.

Yet the Women's March has not condemned Hamas' weaponization of rape as a tool of war; instead, it has only called for a ceasefire. Me Too has not condemned Hamas' weaponization as a tool of war. UN Women did not condemn Hamas' massacre until December 2, nearly two months after October 7, after intense public pressure from Israelis and the Jewish community.

Angelina Jolie, perhaps the most vocal global activist against the weaponization of rape as a tool of war, has said absolutely nothing about Hamas' war crimes; instead, she has asked Israel to ceasefire.

[slide 9] Double standard: legitimacy

Israel is condemned more than any other nation in the world, but the double standard doesn't end there. Israel's real or perceived crimes are blown out of proportion in comparison to other countries' real or perceived crimes, but the double standard doesn't end there. Israel's suffering is minimized, contextualized, denied, or qualified in comparison to the suffering of other countries, but the double standard doesn't end there. Instead, there is another double standard: everything coming out of Hamas' mouth is immediately taken as fact, while everything that comes out of Israel is questioned.

This is not merely a matter of "feeling" like there is a double standard.

On October 17, an explosion went off at the Al Ahli Hospital parking lot. Within minutes, Hamas claimed that an Israeli airstrike had targeted the hospital, killing 471 people. Israel claimed that a Palestinian Islamic Jihad missile misfired and hit the hospital. But the BBC ran with Hamas' story. This triggered worldwide outrage, inciting anti-Jewish riots in the Arab world and in Russia. Eventually, most international independent investigations corroborated Israel's version of events. But by the time the media retracted its original claim - that is, what Hamas said - it was too late. Two Jews had already been killed in Tunisia in retaliation for a massacre that Israel never actually committed.

Then there is the issue of the hostage videos. Hostage videos are hostage videos because they are made under duress. The hostage is told what to say; otherwise, their life is in danger. Hamas, of course, has coerced the Israeli hostages into saying that they are being treated well. These statements, made with a gun to the head, have been taken as fact, so much so that prominent figures such as Shaun King have gushed over Hamas' so-called "humane" treatment of the hostages (that they brutally abducted after murdering their entire families and friends before their eyes).

Yet, now that over a hundred hostages have been released, and they are no longer under threat from Hamas, they are coming out with stories of abuse and torture. Suddenly, no one believes these accounts, claiming that Israel must have told them what to say. It's absolutely absurd and defies all logic.

the list of incidents in the background

This is the list of incidents that appears in the background on TV, in the 10/4 cinematic with Sae, the SIU Director, and Akechi. Let's take a look at them, one by one, to see (some of?) what's been going on.

バス暴走死傷事故 basu bousou shishou jiko reckless bus driving accident that caused injuries and deaths

This is explicitly described as a bousou—the word meaning "runaway" or "rampage" that the original name for "psychotic breakdown" uses, and the original name for Call of Chaos uses. In this context, it means reckless driving. Also shishou is "deaths and injuries"—this is explicitly a fatal accident. The game wants us to know that, even if nobody died in that subway crash, people have died in these mysterious incidents.

コンビニ爆発物事件 konbini bakuhatsumono jiken convenience store bombing incident

What? Did someone bomb a convenience store? Well, maybe not. If you're following the news, the recent incident where someone threw a smoke bomb at PM Kishida Fumio is being described as a bakuhatsumono jiken. So this could be relatively tame.

Or it might not be. The Manchester Arena bombing, where people leaving an Ariana Grande concert were blown up and many died, is also a bakuhatsumono jiken. It could go either way.

Short and sweet. Could be another subway incident, but since it's not explicitly mentioned as being one, it's more likely a road tunnel or something? Fires in tunnels can be devastating, of course.

This sounds like another one that could have been quite dramatic. Marinas tend to be places where rich and powerful people hang out, so this is likely to do with someone being explicitly targetted?

Hahaha, this one is fun. First, a "limousine bus" is an airport bus—the ones that run you out to the plane. The airport is a spoof of Haneda Airport. 羽田 "Haneda", to Yokuta (?)'s 翼田—they've changed the first kanji for another one that means "wing".

A totsunyuu jiko is a car crash, but seems to be specifically a crash where the vehicle crashes into a fixed obstacle? So some poor driver smashed their shuttle bus into a wall.

新都市交通あねはづる事故 shin toshi koutsuu anehazuru jiko Anehazuru Monorail case

This one is a P3 reference. shin toshi koutsuu—"New Urban Transport", a term for a "people mover" or monorail. The Shin Toshi Koutsuu Anehazuru is the monorail in P3.

We don't know what happened there, but this may be the only indication that anything happens outside Tokyo in P5 (besides Shido getting his drama on with Joker).

An anehazuru, BTW, is a type of bird, the demoiselle crane.

This one is interesting because it's so unlike the rest—though there are a lot of data leaks during the Medjed arc, which suggests the conspiracy is somehow taking the opportunity to carry them out. Cyberattacks certainly don't seem in Akechi's line (though he might be responsible for locating worthwhile targets?), so this might just have been swept in with the accidents and "incidents".

An attack on the Cabinet Office, of course, makes it a political attack, and exceptionally likely to be Shido-motivated somehow.

The last on the list: someone, or several someones, were poisoned.

so what do we know

While only one of these, the top one, is explicitly described as fatal, it doesn't take much of a stretch to see that many of them could have been fatal—and the fact that they aren't all called "fatal accident" doesn't make them necessarily not fatal.

Plus, the list fills the screen. These are unlikely to be all the cases; they're the most recent ones, or the ones the studio thought most worthy of note.

THE MANCHESTER ARENA BOMBING

On May 22nd 2017, 22 year old Salman Abedi entered the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Salam brought with him a 66 pound TATP nail-bomb hidden inside of his backpack, which at 10:31 p.m (UTC) went off in the city room as thousands of people left Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Women” concert. This bomb would kill Salman as it went off.

The nail-bomb would also kill 22 others and injure over 1,000 others. The reason why Salam did this because of the deaths of Muslim children resulting from the American-led intervention in the Syrian Civil War. Though ,at the beginning, it was suspected he acted alone. Later on in 2020 his brother ,Hashem Abedi, was tried and convicted. He was charged with 22 counts of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion. Hashem was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 55 years.

AFTER THE SHOOTING

A report by the Kerslake Report, the security of the arena was insufficient. Although bag searches were performed, they were inconsistent. Salman entered through the City Room, which was outside of the security zone. Security was made much tighter due to this incident.

This was the first suicide bombing in the United Kingdom since the July 7th 2005 London bombings.

Skyfall is a good movie. Frankly, all the Daniel Craig bond films leading up to it were good movies. Pivoting from the 06 Casino Royale’s re-contextualization of spies in the post-9/11 geopolitical landscape, Skyfall is about the consequences of the wars we fought before and the mistakes that came back to haunt us following the actions we took in those wars.

Skyfall was released in 2012, 11 years after the twin towers fell and 9 years after the 03 invasion of Iraq. We’d killed Bin Laden and now had to deal with ISIL, who’d not yet bombed the Ariana Grande concert but had at this point grown in power as a result of the US invasion in 03. Setting up the villain of the film (and his horrific disfigurement) as directly the result of MI6 decisionmaking only for him to come back and blow up MI6′s iconic HQ is evidence enough that Skyfall is a retrospective on a decade of war on terror that seems to have done nothing.

There are no better ways to show how tired and old Bond (and the empire he represents) is than to have him fail his fitness tests while in Winston Churchill’s old bunker. A waning icon of a waning empire in the decrepit remains of said empire. It’s a perfect exploration of the intersection of postcolonialism and the war on terror.

Given that the last Daniel Craig film I’d seen before starting Skyfall was Glass Onion, I watched Skyfall with the “I’m so glad that Craig stopped playing Bond so that now he can dress in sweaters in fun movies” criticisms in mind and frankly, I found they fell flat. For one thing, Bond does wear sweaters in this (very fun!) movie (as well as a cute blue adidas tracksuit with matching shoes!), but on top of that I’m starting to realize this criticism of the modern bond franchise (and other films like these) comes from the sort of people who still use the word “grimdark” for their media criticism. Just like those who unironically use “dudebro,” their contributions to serious discussion are limited. Doubly so for Skyfall because this movie is fantastic and balances tone elegantly.

I will admit that Skyfall takes a serious tone when addressing things like “the fall of the 20th century western imperialist old guard” and “thematic explorations of the war on terror and the mistakes of those gambling with the lives of millions” (If you were to try and write those into something finally similar to Trolls 2 it’d be difficult though not impossible) but I will argue that the movie is still self aware enough to understand itself as a pulpy adventure film.

This isn’t Moonraker or anything, but Skyfall is self aware enough to know what beats to hit. The villain monologues and then challenges Bond to a flintlock pistol shooting match. They keep the main bad guy in a dorky sci-fi glass prison cell. The action finale has goons (did I mention that there are goons?) showing up in a helicopter to attack a castle. They even pull the old DB5 out of mothballs so Bond can threaten the ejection seat trick. Bond fights off an evil lizard in a casino at one point. Imagine the movie in 60s Technicolor and the bones of the plot are just as camp as Goldfinger.

The movie is clearly self-aware and plays into the campier story conventions of a genre the franchise it belongs to basically started. It just doesn’t have characters shrug and go “*gulp* he’s behind me isn’t he?” Instead of lampshading the more ridiculous aspects of pulp characters from the 60s and 70s, Skyfall is so darn earnest about how cool these are. It’s self aware yet charming in its seriousness! (Jots down “James Bond Skyfall = Solarpunk?” into margin of notebook and is never heard from again)

Movies like Captain Marvel can’t say the same, and only half of that is because you can’t write a critique of Bush and Obama era imperialism while also shilling for the USAF. It’s because they can’t be serious in their ridiculousness that they end up being less campy (ashamed of truly trying) and less adult (too silly to take seriously) and ultimately less fun than movies like Skyfall.

That’s ultimately what Skyfall is. A Pulpy country-hopping spy flick about modern spies operating in shadows that are getting more cynical with every conflict. It’s not Dr. No but it’s immense fun that explores themes few other franchises are tackling these days. That’s worth a lot more than whatever Ryan Reynolds/The Rock spy film is dealing these days. And Daniel Craig got to wear a dark powder blue tracksuit too.

Taylor uses facial recognition software at concerts?? *what the fuck* 👀

you can google around for more info but it was used during rep tour to help identify any of her stalkers/security threats in case they tried to get into the show. i think ultimately, while facial recognition in general isn't my favorite and i wish there had been more transparency that it was being used (although honestly i was 16 so maybe i checked a little ticketmaster box without reading it or something), it's understandable why they did it considering the sheer amount of stalkers taylor has and the task of keeping 50k+ people safe. what you have to remember is that this tour happened in a post-ariana grande manchester bombing and vegas festival shooting world, and concerts, especially huge stadium shows, were a big area of fear for a lot of people (taylor included, as she has explicitly stated so). idk if anyone remembers that guy on instagram during the australia leg who made all these videos about how he was going to bomb the show or something? it's also possible that i was 16 and very susceptible to internet fear mongering tactics and this wasn't as much of a formative rep tour experience for everyone else lmao. but anyway, yeah, she did and probably will continue to use questionable technologies and institutions in the name of safety at the next tour. i think it is what it is and it's not something to be super upset about, but i just mentioned it in the tags of that post because i feel like barely anyone knows about it even if they were there.

. . . Salman [Abedi] was an IT student at Manchester College, a further education college for young people aged sixteen to nineteen. A couple of people who knew him at the time claimed after the bombing that they were so alarmed by his extremist views that they made separate calls to an antiterrorist hotline. Another individual, a young man who was in the same year at Manchester College, was more specific: he recalled that Salman was a misogynist who had ‘serious issues with women, especially the female staff’. The former student said: ‘He wouldn't listen to them. He had a dreadful attitude and would argue with them about anything. He would hang around with other lads who would smoke weed and harass the girls. They'd say really inappropriate things, he just had no respect for women.’

What happened next is recorded in David Anderson's report as ‘an assault on a female while at college’ but there was much more to it than that: Salman confronted a female classmate, telling her that her skirt was too short, and punched her in the head when she stood up to him. At the age of seventeen, in other words, and long before he set out to murder teenage fans in short skirts at an Ariana Grande concert, Salman was already seeking to control what women wore - and he resorted to violence as soon as his victim defied him. A young woman who witnessed the assault recalled: ‘[Salman] came face to face with her and punched her really hard in the side of the head. He could have killed her.’

Manchester Arena Bombing Victims: Saffie-Rose Roussos

Saffie-Rose Roussos was an 8-year-old schoolgirl from Manchester, UK. Described as happy and kind, Saffie loved My Little Pony and dancing to pop music, dreaming one day that she might be a popstar. Saffie lived with her parents and brother, Xander, in Lancashire.

Saffie was described as ecstatic when, in 2016, for Christmas she was given tickets to see her idol, Ariana Grande, perform in Manchester. On 22nd May 2017, she attended the concert with her mother. On the way to the concert, Saffie took selfies with her mother, these were the last photos she ever took. At the end of the concert as the audience were leaving, Salman Abendi detonated a bomb in the foyer, Saffie was just 5 metres away from the blast. As people rushed to help, a man selling posters spoke to Saffie who asked told him her name and asked for her mother.

Saffie died later that night, she had over 100 injuries including to her lungs and liver. The official cause of death was blood loss due to leg injuries.

Saffie was the youngest victim of the attack in which 22 people died. Salman Abedi died in the attack, he had planned to carry out a terror attack with his brother who was jailed for 55 years.

Is there anything that you actually like about the Wicked movie? I’m thrilled Erivo has played a queer lead before and I can see the movie leaning into the queer aspect of the books (let’s face it, the stage musical totally dropped the ball on that). And I’d much rather have twice the Wicked onscreen, so I’m down for two movies.

oh damn have i been that negative about the wicked movie? Anon, I call the book and musical trash fires and garbage all day long. :') The movies are and will not be exempt. I expect things I'll fucking hate (like I do in the books and musical) but will still find so much to love.

I'm at the point where I see Wicked (in all its adaptations) as a big sandbox I get to play around in and build my own things. it's what I've done for years and will continue to do once the movie(s) come out. But to your question:

Things I'm Looking Forward To In The Wicked Movies:

I, too, am excited about Cynthia Erivo. Not only has she played a queer lead before, a quick wiki search tells me she actually identifies as queer and bisexual. A bisexual queen portraying a bisexual icon? Let's go!

Ariana Grande. Yes, I know, quite the controversial opinion, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Most criticism I've seen is that they think Ariana is just gonna play... Ariana Grande in the movie. Not Glinda. And it speaks to how much and how well of a Personality™ she has crafted over the years. Like, did you know her hair is naturally curly? She deliberately does not wear it in public, because that's a very personal and private thing. Always opting for the stylized high ponytail instead. Why am I bringing this up? Because unless you know Ariana Grande personally, all you know about her, is a public image. Remind you of someone? Right. Glinda. If she can tap into that part of herself, the public vs. private self, and use that to portray Gilnda. Hot damn are we gonna get a juicy second act!

("but she's not a full soprano!! and whistle notes don't count! >:(") she has a four octaves range and is literally one of the most popular and talented singers of our time. stop pretending your local fav and classically musical trained actress with no screen experience whatsoever would be able to do a better job.

("but when she performed at A Very Wicked Halloween she wasn't all that good!") Yeah, that came to my mind too, but I did a bit of a google and it turns out she nearly dropped out of the performance due to anxiety from a recent break-up, but also, oh you know, the goddamn Manchester Arena bombing, that killed 23 people, injured over a 1000 and left so many with PTSD and trauma, including Ariana. Just. Imagine singing. Doing your job. And as people leave your concert. They get killed and injured. Yeah, you know what? She gets a pass for not being "at her best" when it seems a lot of personal shit was happening at the time.

Which brings me to my final point about Ariana: she loves Wicked. I've said it in the first ever post I made after the casting announcement and I'll say it again: Ariana Grande doesn't need to go up for acting roles. She's at the top of her game career wise. If anything, doing a bad job as Glinda could leave a dent. So she wouldn't have gone up for the role, if she didn't want to fully commit to it. In my google search I also found out she's currently not working on new music so she can focus on Glinda. So. Literally pushing away the most successful part of her career to do a goddamn movie. That's commitment. She won't half-ass this. She's committed to the role. And I wish both her and Cynthia the best and that they can fully embody those meaty roles.

In that same vein, I'm quite happy to see Ariana and Cynthia bonding prior to shooting. I don't have much fate that the movies will strengthen the queer subtext (we can always hope, but i prefer not to set myself up for disappointment) but they very much understand that Glinda and Elphaba's relationship are at the core of the show. If I got some delicious subtext to chew on, I'm good.

The director Jon M. Chu gives me hope as well! I haven't seen his whole filmography but it seems he had several directing gigs and is used to mixing it with musical elements. I have seen Crazy Rich Asians (albeit a few years ago) but I remember it being campy but also heartfelt at the right moments and being able to switch between the two. Hey. That's similar to Wicked's tone! Honestly, watch Crazy Rich Asians and see how much it vibes with Wicked's tone of voice. I think you'd be surprised and pretty hopeful he can pull that balance off with Wicked too!

I obviously can't speak much about the actual movies, the plot, the storytelling, the cinematography, the acting, the costumes, the set design, the singing, and... pretty much everything that makes a movie. And I'm not really into speculating on the movie. I'll wait until the final product is here and pick and choice from there what I like. Getting new content for a fandom that hasn't really gotten anything new since at least a decade, is exciting on its own!

Bringing me to the one thing I unequivocally look forward to the most:

The movies will draw in new fans! Listen, I love tiny fandoms. I love our tiny fandom. But it's also, at times, a bit of a wasteland. Even if the movies become everything we fear, so many people will (re)discover Wicked!

And even if all of us elderly fans will be grumpy and mad that the movie isn't our 2D animated dream version we've all collectively embraced as the Better Movie... a real movie can never beat the fantasy version perfectly tailored to all the wishes in your own head. But that's where the fandom part kicks in. We can have our own fun!

So yeah, I'm exciting to all the people who will become curious about Wicked once the movies come out. Yes, even the people who only watch the movie bc Ariana is in it. Yes, even if they don't ship the ship I ship. Yes, even if I hate the movies with my entire being but they absolutely love it.

A bit of fresh perspective can really revive this fandom, but we have to let it. And I for one, cannot wait to see the new perspectives the movies and new fans will bring to us!

(2017) Manchester Arena Bombing

The attack occurred in Manchester, United Kingdom in Manchester Arena, where the famous singer, Ariana Grande was performing. The perpetrator was  Salman Ramadan Abedi. Abedi was wearing black clothing and a large rucksack.

At about five minutes later at 22:31, the suicide bomber denotated an improvised explosive device that was packed with nuts and bolts to act as shrapnel. Abedi denotated his bomb in the foyer of the arena.

Many parents and exiting concert-goers were in the foyer when the bomb went off. The bomb was strong enough to kill up to 20 people in the arena.

Salman Abedi ended up blowing himself up in the foyer, and witnesses said that they saw his torso fly in the corner of the arena.
