excerpts from an article written by swathi s. nair, dated 28th november 2019.
tw: mentions of queerphobia, violence against lgbtqia+ in the last three excerpts.
back in 200 A.D, various temples across India had sex sculptures carved into their walls. sun temple is one such place in Konark, a city in the state of odisha. the sun temple of Konark is a holistic place with depictions of sexual acts that involve polygamy, lesbian relationships, polyandry, and more. all the fallen down sculptures and walls have been preserved in the nearby Konark Archeological Museum.
“Kamasutra, the book of love was taught to young students back in the days and this was one of the pictorial media of education for young students then.” says Suryamani Malla, tourist guide from department of tourism, who has extensively researched about the sun temple of Konark.
section 377 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) states: “unnatural offenses- whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years and shall also be liable to fine.”
this law was decriminalized on 6th september 2018. it was a huge step in the right direction, but for a country who has homosexual sex sculptures on the walls of the most sacred temples, this should have never been a ‘criminal offence’.
other than the Konark temple, the best preserved of all temples can be found in a small town named khajuraho in the central state of madhya pradesh. Khajuraho temples were built in the Chandela dynasty between 950 A.D and 1050 A.D. the sculptures portray homosexuality and are depicted right next to sculptures of divine beings smiling blissfully at their devotees.
apart from all this, Hinduism is a religion that has traditionally considered sex an essential part of life. that could be one of the reasons why these carvings are casually scattered between others that portray activities such as prayer and war. the fact that they are set in plain view and not tucked away in the extreme corner tells that their creators meant for them to be seen by all. “if you take Kamasutra itself, there is an entire chapter that talks about homosexuality. where they talk and clearly categorize all kinds of homosexual desires. the author talks about these desires as perfectly normal and as a possibility. he did not portray it to be a moral issue or a social/religious taboo.” says jithin shankar, who is an assistant professor of History at NSS Hindu College, Kerala.
the reason why concept like homosexuality has become subjective is because people either address it to be right or wrong. the literature available tells you that having a sexual preference tis more of a grey area, hence multiple versions of the same thing. at some point in time, homosexuality collided with religion and that is when people started questioning the ethics and morality of this subject.
religion is just a discipline which tells people what to do and what not to do. there have been multiple cults throughout history before religion came into picture in this country. there have been various cults that worship sexual organs like Linga worship or Yoni worship during the Indus Valley Civilization. this gives it a spiritual entity.
many characters in Indian mythology literature like Mahabharata and Puranas talk about characters like Mohini and Shikhandi, who can be categorized as bisexual or gender variant and this shows how normal it was back then to include characters like this to the literature. “instead of getting inspired by the character, even the fact that people had the imagination to write down a character like her, is a big step. they had the literary freedom when it came to this” says Shankar. shankar points out that during that time and age, even the European literature did not think or talk about something like this. so, for a country like India to talk about this in their literature is a huge thing and it shouldn’t be looked down upon right now.
Shikhandi is another character that can be identified as gender variant in the Indian mythology. Mahabharata is believed to written around 6th and 7th century period, around the Gupta dynasty time and it talks about a character called Shikhandi who was born a woman but changes sex and becomes a eunuch.
even though many literature like Vishnu Purana term it as a negative thing, other literature like Ardhashastra, Kamasutra and Panchatantra talk about it like a normal thing. archaeology provides hard core support when it comes to that.
“sculptures around the temples like Khajuraho, or Sun temple in Konark prove to us that whatever written in these literature was not a made-up story. it was something Indians back then believed and accepted” says Shankar. these sculptures are no western influence for our country, and neither is homosexuality. decriminalization of section 377 is a big step, but the LGBTQIA+ community still faces a lot of bullying and exclusion from the Indian society, especially from politicians and religious groups.
religion has become the biggest weapon to make people in this country feel like an outsider. people are victims of lynching, mental torture and thousands of them have been thrown out of their homes by their own families for coming out as LGBTQIA+. this is a huge step back for our community.
if Indians thousands of years ago could accept homosexuality as something natural and common, then there is no reason to react in a negative way towards the LGBTQIA+ community in India today.

note: i have merely shared some excerpts from the article, as it is. i also have paraphrased a few lines to make the sentences shorter without changing their original meaning. the sole credit for the entire article goes, obviously, to the author.
also, here's a reminder to stop being an a*****e and stop using your religion as an excuse to hide the fact that you're just a disgustingly bigoted human being.

Tiger #2
I shared my experience about our tiger sighting in my last post, at that time, our guide said to us..   ‘’ Jyachya kade patience..tyala tiger” [ whoever has patience, gets to see the tiger ]
The next two posts are going to be about our encounters in the forest, some close misses and the test of our patience which was rewarded later..
Let’s start with our first jungle safari trip together, we decided to go to Madhya Pradesh and visit two Tiger Reserves - Bandhavgarh and Kanha..We first arrived at Bandhavgarh and had three safaris booked, it was the very first time for us going on a jungle safari in individual jeep, so we didn't know what to expect, I had been to Ramthambore on a college trip but that was in a cantor and the vehicle was making such a racket that i had lost any hope of spotting a tiger five mins in. This was different, We woke up at 4 a.m., got geared up with our cameras, water and a breakfast basket packed by the hotel and were ready to leave by 5.15 a.m.. A driver came to pick us up at the hotel where we were staying which was situated on the outskirts of the park, and then we reached the main gate within minutes, where our pass was checked along with our government ids and we were allotted a guide. We then entered the jungle at 6 a.m., and I was bowled over by the silence and I immediately fell in love! For the first few minutes, until our ears and brain adjusted to this calm, it felt like someone had held their hands against my ears and I felt some sort of pressure against them, we were going deeper within the forest now, just us four, me, baba, the guide and the driver. Slowly my ears opened up,started taking in the noises and the whole place started coming to life, the musical chirping of the birds, monkeys jumping from one branch to the other, deers grazing and it was such a beautiful feeling to sit there in that jeep, going further in the green jungle surrounded by this white noise and yet feeling absolutely silent!
Tumblr media
Then we heard a sharp note, thats when our guide explained to us what a ‘call’ was. I remember thinking then, that we communicate for our gain, our pleasure or our need, but the jungle communicates just to inform, the tiger on the ground is no threat to a monkey sitting high on the treetops or to the bird in the sky, but they still give a call, to alert the others. With time we learnt to recognise the different calls, different in two ways, the source of the call, i.e. Monkey, different species of Deer, Peacock, different birds etc and the intensity of the call, a mild one, just to indicate the presence of the tiger or one that warns about its movement.
We saw the sun rise and go from mild lovely sunlight to harsh hot sun, and we returned to our resort happy with our experience, not extremely sad about not seeing a tiger, because it is a matter of luck and probability, more the safaris, higher is the chance of seeing the tiger. We didn't get to see the tiger but we saw various other animals, like the Indian Gaur, a Fox, mongoose and numerous birds! But we definitely felt a sense of let down when we heard that another family staying at our resort saw a family of tigers in a different zone than the one we went to, one male, one female and three cubs, feasting on a kill!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After lunch, we set out again for our evening safari with new hope in our hearts, and like in Tadoba we went to wait near a large pond, we saw various birds there, we waited till the very last minute possible, but no tiger. Having realised that we were cutting it really fine the driver sped up on our way back to the gate, and suddenly Baba spotted something running towards the road, but by the time the driver realised and put the brakes and slowly reversed back the creature had retreated in the foliage but through the leaves we saw a Sloth bear with a cub on its back hoping to cross the small path made for the cars.. The guide said that we were lucky indeed as a sloth bear sighting is even rare than that of a tiger as their population is less as compared to tigers and they are mostly nocturnal and having black fur they are difficult to spot when the sun is about to go down [ time of the closing of the park at 6.30pm ]
On reaching our hotel, as we were having tea along with other tourists, and exchanging our experience, a guest told us that he had been going on safaris for three weeks and there hadn't been a single sighting in the zone in which we had all our bookings, owing to the jungle fire that had taken place a week prior to our visit which had driven all the animals further in the forest and it was a surprise that we saw the sloth bear! That night after dinner, I had the most terrifying 3 minutes of my life.. The hotel had a common area for the guests to come together and have their meals, a gondola on the porch for tea time and a restaurant for sit down meals. The food-hall was the only room that had tv and it being IPL season me and baba would sit and watch the match after dinner, that night too, we were there till 11.30 or so and were returning to our rooms, which were all positioned like camping tents..in a circular fashion with a zig-zag garden path connecting them to the restaurant. There were no proper lights, just some vintage lamps and fairy lights to illuminate the path. So we had to use flashlights from our phones to get to the room.
Tumblr media
As we were half way to our room I noticed that it was eerily silent, just the rustling of the wind and as a breeze reached us, we got a very foul smell.. Like something had been rotting for a long time, or like the smell of yogurt gone bad, and I went blank for a minute, that thing they show in movies when one freezes and recollects something, I experienced that and I could here our guide telling us that, ‘a tiger stinks, as it devours raw flesh and if it doesn't clean itself well, it starts to reek, so apart from calls, the stink is also used to identify its presence’. Me and baba both looked at each other and immediately we knew we were both thinking the same thing, He flashed the light he was holding to his right and I was so scared, what if it jumped out at us, I begged him to keep walking, not daring to look even an inch out of my way nor to make any sudden movements, just walked quickly to the room, finding our way with the help of our flashlights and as we got in the room, I asked baba to bolt the door shut and then we both looked out of the window to see if there was any sign of the tiger around but we couldn't see anything as there was no light outside. From the safety of our room, we flashed the lights everywhere they could reach, but we couldn't see it.
I couldn't sleep a wink that night, this scenario kept going on and on in my mind. We woke up and got ready the next morning, the tiger still on our minds, and I was scared to step out initially, but we checked once through the window and then left the room. When we narrated our experience to the hotel staff, they were all awestruck and one of them informed us that a calf from the barn just outside the hotel gate had been snatched by a tiger! We were wide eyed only just realising what a close call we had!

It is an arduous task for farmers to keep vegetables fresh for long after harvesting. Transportation of the vegetables to the market is also an arduous task. During the lockdown, the life of the farmers became more difficult. At this time, Rukart, a Thane-based company, came up with a solution to help farmers keep their produce fresher for longer periods. The solution is the ‘Subjee Cooler.’
Beginning of Rukart
Rukart was found by three alumni students of IIT, Bombay – Gunavant Nehete, Shauraya Kulkarni, and Vikash Jha. Vikash graduated from college in 2016 and started working on a research project. The focus of the project was on marginalized farmers in Odisha and Maharashtra. The research findings showed that the agricultural technology available in the market did not meet the need of the marginalized farmers. It was too expensive for them.
Vikash mentioned, “While visiting villages, we realized farmers are working very hard but are not earning enough from their produce. We wanted to find a solution for their problems.” After completing his research project, Vikash started Rukart with his two college acquaintances.
Creating Subjee Cooler for Farmers
According to a survey report, many farmers are susceptible to distress sales because of limited storage facilities. The farmers get a poor price for their crops. The Subjee cooler is low maintenance and affordable vegetable cooler. It does not require electricity. The nitrogen balls in the cooling chamber keep the temperature of the cooler 5-15 degrees lower than the ambient temperature.
We can store fruits and vegetables inside the Subjee Cooler for 4 -5 days. With the help of this, the farmers can keep their produce fresh for a prolonged period.
Benefits to the Farmers
Earlier farmers used to harvest their vegetables once a week before taking them to the market. Now with Subjee Cooler, the farmers can harvest their produce 3-4 times a week. Farmers using the Subjee Cooler are earning 30 percent more compared to the other farmers.
Other Product Innovations by Rukart
Rukart has developed multiple innovative products. Peek Rakshak is another one of them. It is a defense system that lessens human-animal conflict causing no harm to the animals. The device is easily portable and reduces damages caused in the field because of animals. It reduces the patrolling costs of the farmer.
Jalkund is another innovative product from Rukart. It is a water body that can store up to 3500 to 4500 liters of rainwater. The water gets refilled in Jalkund through a river, lake, nala, and well. The water stored can be used to cultivate vegetables and fruits or irrigate horticulture crops. Rukart has developed many more such products to make the lives of farmers easier.
Buying Options Available to Farmers
The farmers can avail the products offered by Rukart at a low price. Buying the products in installments is also an option. Currently, Rukart caters to the farmers in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and the northeastern region.

Plans for Future
The startup aims to reach out to more farmers in different states. The focus is to promote sustainable development, help marginalized farmers and innovate more cost-effective and environment-friendly agricultural devices.
