"So that, upon the whole, we may conclude, that the Christian Religion not only was at first attended with miracles, but even at this day cannot be believed by any reasonable person without one. Mere reason is insufficient to convince us of its veracity: And whoever is moved by Faith to assent to it, is conscious of a continued miracle in his own person, which subverts all the principles of his understanding, and gives him a determination to believe what is most contrary to custom and experience." -- David Hume, "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" (1748)

Oooo im a sociology major! Which is sort of related to philosophy kinda? Idk they're both social studies :) do you have any philosophy things to recc? (Books, podcasts, youtoobs, etc)
I'm taking a sociology class this semester omg. I took a cultural anthropology one last semester and really liked it so I'm excited for the sociology class. I don't think I have any philosophy things to recommend other than philosophical texts but I really liked David Hume's an enquiry concerning human understanding which introduced me to empiricism (I read Locke a little later) and I thought it was really interesting. Fuck Hume though. For books I recommend the brothers Karamazov I can't emphasize how much I love this book...

The Radicalisation Process - Tom's Thoughts #1
For one reason or another, I've recently found myself trying to understand how someone becomes radicalised, perhaps in person first, and how this process may be fuelled by continuous online exposure to the same harmful ideologies they were initially exposed to.
It seems to be the case that those most vulnerable in society - psychologically, intellectually, economically, or other - are most susceptible to attempts of radicalisation. But, anyone yearning for meaning or connection could also be at risk. Imagine suddenly becoming a divorcee, living alone without your kids, without any real social life. You're quite vulnerable. It makes sense that you'd be looking for connection; even just something to fill the time.
Someone/some group walks into your life and offers exactly what you're missing. They quite naturally assume a lot of power over you in that state. Over time, you can imagine what sort of indoctrination could take place, especially if you're naturally agreeable, or uneducated etc.
You may take your new-found attitudes to the online world, likely after those in the real world disagree and distance themselves. However, this quickly becomes an 'echo-chamber' where there is a distinct lack of open, reasonable, fair-yet-critical discourse such as that found in scientific enquiry, for example. Radicalised individuals are then easily able to find others who feel the same way and form (geographically scattered & small IRL, yet influential online) groups who continually reinforce each other's extreme views.
This appears to be a difficult situation from which to become 'unstuck' - some studies suggest terrorist radicalisation is impossible to undo. But, I believe we should try our best to help, particularly if it concerns a loved one, or something as important as your human rights.
If you found anything I said in this blog interesting, please consider listening to the podcast 'Understanding Online Radicalisation' (Tech Against Terrorism, 2022):

AI Chatbots: Streamlining University Inquiries for Efficiency
Universities constantly seek innovative solutions to streamline operations and enhance administrative efficiency as the educational environment evolves fast. One of the most promising technologies in this realm is the implementation of AI chatbots. A chatbot for college enquiry can transform how universities handle potential students and questions and significantly boost administrative productivity.
In this blog, we’ll explore how AI chatbots, particularly those designed for college and university inquiries, are making a measurable impact on administrative efficiency within higher education institutions.
Simplifying the Inquiry Process
The first point of contact for prospective students, parents, and even current students often involves seeking information about courses, admissions, fees, and campus facilities. Traditionally, this would require human intervention, with staff members manually responding to each query. However, introducing an AI chatbot has revolutionized this process.
The chatbot for college enquiry is available 24/7, providing instant responses to common questions. This speeds up the inquiry process and frees staff to focus on more complex tasks requiring a human touch.
Enhancing Response Accuracy and Consistency
One key benefit of using AI chatbots is their ability to provide accurate and consistent information. Unlike humans, who may occasionally make errors or provide inconsistent information due to misunderstanding or miscommunication, chatbots follow a programmed set of instructions.
This ensures that all inquiries receive the correct information, which in turn boosts the credibility and reliability of the university's communication efforts.
Reducing Administrative Burden
The workload on university administrative staff can be overwhelming, especially during peak periods like admissions season or the beginning of a new semester. AI chatbots significantly reduce this burden by handling a large volume of routine inquiries, thus allowing staff to concentrate on more critical administrative duties.
This improves work efficiency and enhances job satisfaction among employees, as they can engage in more meaningful and less repetitive tasks.
Improving Data Collection and Insights
AI chatbots for college enquiries do more than just answer questions. They also collect valuable data about prospective and current students' concerns. This data can be analyzed to uncover trends, identify frequently asked questions, and even spot areas where the university may need to improve its services or offerings.
These insights can inform strategic decisions, from academic program adjustments to campus service improvements, ultimately enhancing the educational experience.
Personalizing the User Experience
Modern AI chatbots can provide personalized experiences to users by remembering past interactions and tailoring responses accordingly. This personalized approach makes users feel valued and understood and streamlines the information retrieval process.
For instance, if a student has previously inquired about a particular course, the chatbot can reference that course in future discussions, providing a seamless and customized interaction.
Cost Efficiency
Implementing an AI chatbot for university inquiries can be highly cost-effective. Once set up, these digital assistants can handle an infinite number of inquiries simultaneously without the need for breaks or downtime.
This scalability means universities can manage large volumes of inquiries without the need to hire additional staff, thus significantly reducing operational costs over time.
Challenges and Considerations
While AI chatbot for university inquiries offer numerous advantages, universities must also navigate certain challenges. Ensuring the chatbot is properly trained to understand and respond to a wide range of inquiries is crucial.
Maintaining the chatbot, updating its knowledge base, and ensuring it aligns with privacy and data protection regulations require ongoing attention.
Conclusion
AI chatbots represent a significant leap forward in how universities can manage inquiries and improve administrative efficiency. By handling routine questions, providing accurate information, and offering personalized interactions, these digital assistants free human staff to focus on tasks requiring human judgment and empathy.
Moreover, the cost efficiency and data insights provided by AI chatbots make them an invaluable tool for universities looking to enhance their administrative operations and better serve their communities.
As technology continues to evolve, the potential for AI chatbots in higher education is boundless, promising even greater improvements in administrative efficiency and student satisfaction in the years to come.

With each new blasphemy controversy in the West, from The Satanic Verses to Charlie Hebdo, the corrosive effect on free expression worsens. In Wakefield, we see just how low the bar for blasphemy allegations has fallen, and how readily complaints are legitimised by our own institutions. As reported, four non-Muslim pupils were suspended from school after the unintentional scuffing of an English copy of the Quran. West Yorkshire Police said they were closely “liaising” with the school and that their enquiries “confirmed minor damage” to the text. In their response, the school and local authorities seem to give credence to an understanding of blasphemy which goes beyond the one advanced even by jihadists.
After a Batley schoolteacher was forced into hiding and a film, The Lady of Heaven, was pulled from cinemas, this is at least Britain’s third major blasphemy ‘affair’ in as many years. The recent review of Prevent drew attention to the frequency and danger of blasphemy controversies, but there is nothing that any counter-extremism initiative can do to address these persistent clashes in the UK. This is not a question of countering extremism, solvable with workshops on ‘British Values’ or critical thinking, but instead concerns the sovereignty of British law and the fundamentals of British democracy.
Prior to the aforementioned controversies, Glaswegian shopkeeper Asad Shah was brutally stabbed and stomped to death over blasphemy, and it seems almost a certainty to say that more people will be killed unless the British state and civil society can get a handle on these campaigns, and fast. This doesn’t mean workshops and interventions; rather, local councils and police forces must stop prizing “community engagement” to the exclusion of almost all other considerations, while positive community engagement or the cooling of tensions must mean more than caving to the whims of an offended minority. This approach leads to the embrace of barely concealed extremist figures in order to preserve local relations, but at the expense of the overall health of British democracy.
To reverse course requires using the measures which have been used to block Right-wingers and even a rapper from entering the country from abroad whereas, presently, preachers who lionise religious assassin Mumtaz Qadri can freely make fundraising trips from Pakistan to Britain which allow them to whip up blasphemy fervour at home. It means the public sector not rushing to adopt a definition of ‘Islamophobia’ which transparently protects belief as much as it is designed to protect individual human beings. It means mainstream political parties ejecting people who inflame these affairs — as one councillor did in his (now-deleted) description of the Wakefield page scuffing as a “desecration”. It means the police declining to have anything whatsoever to do with damage to a text, religious or otherwise.
They have failed to do this, and inadvertently lent legitimacy to the complaints of the offended, the outraged, and self-proclaimed community leaders. And a new, serious approach certainly means that counter-terrorism or social cohesion funding should not be going to those who look forward to the restoration of Taliban rule.
This is not about Prevent or counter-extremism; it is the very basics which Britain seems to be getting wrong at almost every turn. All this is nicely summed up by a particularly galling spectacle: a police officer and the fearful mother of an autistic child pleading innocence during what amounts to a modern British blasphemy tribunal.
==
The fact that the kid is autistic is ultimately irrelevant. That it was an accident is neither here nor there.
That said, the fact that this is the reaction that an autistic kid who accidentally drops a book elicits demonstrates how irrational, completely devoid of perspective, and hair-trigger violent this religion is. That this is what happens for a fabricated non-issue in the circumstances given might, hopefully, peak a few people who had previously excused the reactions to Charlie Hebdo, Salman Rushdie, etc.

Thoughts about that Reading Systems primer task...
Ok, so I did the reading task. And ugh, as per usual I did procrastinate and so I did have to rush reading through the article (link here). Even though I had Wednesday and Thursday off...Thursday's session was cancelled by the strikes, which meant my understanding of Cohen's work in his own words are a little bit…skewed to say the least. When it comes to research, I like to throw myself deep into it. But I could not do that with this article. It was sooooo long and boring and the concepts Cohen elaborated on are too complex for my brain to understand. I looked on Google to see if anyone else had analysed the text and maybe then had similar ideas to me. I do this when I'm struggling with academic texts, just so we're all on the same page - I'd hate it if I found out later that my findings were wholly incorrect and I was under the impression that they were not.
Anyways I couldn't find any analyses online and so I've just generalised my opinions on his work. Here are my answers to those four questions:
Analysis on ‘On Purpose: An enquiry into the possible roles of the computer in art’ by Harold Cohen, 1974.
In your own words, describe what your text is about.
The text is about using the computer to create art through inputting simple and complex functions. Cohen was concerned with how he could program the computer/machines to create art instead of just using punched cards that would already have preset ideas for the outcome. He experimented with coding programmes and produced artwork using a teletype and a computer system.
Is this text about systems? What sort of systems does it describe?
Yes. This text is about computers as machines/‘systems’ as well as programmes. Cohen also talks about the difficult mathematical concept of ‘recursion’ as a system/structure and how that can be applied to computer art. It’s the idea of a structure having provided itself with ‘something’ by its last function/process (?).
Can you identify any systems within the presentation of the text? Is the text structured according to a particular system?
There are flowcharts, labeled diagrams and art examples created by Cohen’s teletype-computer system. Cohen starts off the text by explaining his own opinions on what he thinks will happen to technology decades from now on in the context of art and design. He then swiftly moves on to explaining how computer systems are set up and work as well as elaborating on mathematical concepts in detail and how he uses them in coding/programming to create the systems he uses to create his artwork.
How do you think your text relates to graphic design?
The text related to graphic design in the context of artificial intelligence and using technology to aid with creating art. Technology has evolved past the computers mentioned and used at the time Cohen wrote this text. Cohen is considered to be a pioneer of early artificial intelligence art and you can see from how ‘simple’ his systems are in comparison to today’s art-focused systems. In a way, there is already wide usage of artificial intelligence used in today’s design (mainly with command-driven tasks such as resizing images, curating colour palettes and so on). However, there has been an increase in using AI-generated art for visuals in design work in the last 5 years, which removes the need for a human user/designer. This raises a question of ethics, since AI art generation softwares are fed data from artists who most likely would have not given their consent for this purpose. Also, there are links with capitalism and graphic design when you consider Cohen’s text from that perspective.
I'll probably revisit this text and form more solid, nuanced opinions but for now these answers will have to do for Friday's session.

A comprehensive understanding of business operations, strategic management principles, leadership competencies, and critical thinking talents are all part of an India The main goal of MBA education is preparing people for managerial and leadership roles across a range of companies and sectors BA MBA Education Market Trends. A wide range of topics, including finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, entrepreneurship, economics, organizational behavior, and business ethics are often covered in the curriculum. Preparing people for managerial and leadership roles across a range of companies and sectors is the main goal of MBA education. Students who complete the program are expected to be prepared to analyze difficult business challenges, make wise decisions, create winning strategies, and manage teams & organizations.
Currently, India is home to around 4,000 of the 15,000 B-schools worldwide or more than one-fourth of them. Several of these B-schools provide multiple post-graduate management programs. As a result, India has at least 5,000 such programs. Given that formal management education in India only began in 1949, when XLRI Jamshedpur became the nation's first business school (130 years after ESCP Europe, the first business school in the world, opened its doors in Paris in 1819), this rapid expansion is impressive. The development of management education in India, however, has not been without complications and uncertainty. Numerous low-quality B-schools have sprung up, notably in the last ten years, as a result of inconsistent higher education regulations, inadequate planning, and a focus on "education-as-business."
Many of them have closed their doors due to a lack of pupils, and many more are anticipated to follow. This unplanned and unrestrained India MBA Education Market Growth has backfired. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)'s classification of management courses as technical education lacks in proof. Several hundred cases involving topics such as deemed university status and others connected to AICTE clearances are still ongoing in various courts.

The Advertising Standards Council of India routinely receives complaints alleging that business schools' unsupported marketing include deceptive claims. An example of this is the recent Delhi High Court decision that prohibited a school from awarding MBA degrees. Then there are concerns with single institutions that provide a variety of management education programs, some of which are linked with distant universities that grant MBA degrees, some of which are AICTE-approved certificates, and other programs which are not affiliated or approved. As a result of all these worries, there is negativity created, and prospective students constantly face difficult choices.
India has quickly developed into a global economic, financial, and technological center during the past few decades. Owing to the extensive growth of the sector, there are now a ton of business and MBA programs available to meet the expanding needs of the new industries in the market. The MBA program has grown in popularity and demand over the years, making it the clear choice for students and professionals who want to improve their skills. Moreover, there has been a tremendous development in the number of MBA programs and institutions around India due to the high India MBA Education Market Demand for such programs. Unfortunately, this has led to a severe deterioration in the caliber and relevancy of many of these programs. The India MBA Education market is segmented on the basis of duration of course, type of programs, and course type. By duration of course, the India MBA Education industry is classified into 0-12 months, 12-24 months and 24 months.
On the basis of type of programs, it is fragmented into management, marketing & sales, finance & accounting, HR, defense MBA, and others. Depending on the course type, it is segregated into executive MBA, freshers MBA, and e-learning MBA.
