Walt Peregoy, Disney Animator 1950's-60's
"My style was unusual for Walt Disney, but he tolerated me," Peregoy says. Although, since he was "tolerated" for 14 years, the artist sheepishly admits, "I had to be doing something right."
Born in Los Angeles in 1925, Walt Peregoy spent his early childhood on a small island in San Francisco Bay. He was nine years old when he began his formal art training, attending Saturday classes at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley. When he was 12 years old, Peregoy's family returned to Los Angeles, where he enrolled in Chouinard Art Institute's life drawing classes. At age 17, he dropped out of high school and went to work for Disney as an in-betweener.
In 1951, with a young family in tow, Peregoy returned to the United States, and resumed his career with The Walt Disney Studios. Initially, he served as a designer and animator on Peter Pan (1952) and Lady and the Tramp (1955).
"To this day, Walt Peregoy's color styling in 101 Dalmatians (1961) remains a fine example of how color can be used creatively in animation while serving more than a merely decorative function," says modern animation authority Amid Amidi.
Peregoy continued at Disney on the features The Sword in the Stone (1963), Mary Poppins (1964), and The Jungle Book (1967) Peregoy's unique style meshed well with that of his contemporary, stylist Eyvind Earle, and their work on the Academy Award®-nominated short Paul Bunyan (1958) was a departure for Disney.

#cartoonbrew is more the most part very respectable and behaves well as an opinion blog.  But occasionally they do THIS, where #AmidAmidi hangs onto one controversy that he supposedly got "exclusive" news from snooping around, and wrote tons of articles on that only thing, thinking they're the bees knees for starting 1 story that could cost thousands of artists their livelihoods, and tops it off while spouting some ridiculous overreacted opinion that is morally wrong and clearly stems from his own out-of-control temper.  The worst thing is that IT WORKS.  Tons of more dependable and notable news sources like Variety and Hollywood Reporter et al also follow suit and cite Cartoon Brew as their source!!!  
But NOOOOO you have to get all that sweet sweet ad revenue!!!
THE LOUD HOUSE IS A SHOW FOR KIDS, STARRING KIDS. IT'S THE SECOND-HIGHEST-RATED CARTOON NICKELODEON AIRED UNDER SPONGEBOB. THEY BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS FORMULA FOR YEARS! The Bear Roots of Burbank Cartoons: A Lookback at Boo Boo Runs Wild

5 years ago, [adult swim] aired the greatest of all Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episodes, “Boo Boo Runs Wild” (1999), on August 13th, 2016 A.D. at 4 AM.
Look and see, kids, how America’s not-so-average bear connects in the wide world of animation that produces many of the cartoons that you love in Burbank, Canada and more!
As and after I saw it, I knew that I found the greatest band of cartoonists out there, and that greatest band of cartoonists out there was none other than...

Spümcø, whose many creatives would end up working at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Cartoon Network Studios, and many other popular Burbank and Canadian studios that made the cartoons I grew up and beyond watching.

Obviously, the character design is rather different, but they still look like the right characters, even with the slight color changes...

Now, I didn’t have to watch Wild Kratts (which, by the way, features 6 Spümcø Canada creatives) to learn that “there’s only one thing a bear likes more than raiding a pic-a-nic basket.”

As the title suggests, Boo Boo loses his temper when Ranger Smith restricts him from tearing bark and decides to go primal in returning to his bear roots: “From this day forth, I’ll not dress in the man’s attire, and I’ll not speak in the man’s tongue. From now on, it’s going on all fours and grunting for me!”

Unlike past episodes, however, the artists went far wilder than the usual Hanna-Barbera cartoon, making the trees alive and screaming in pain! OH, WHAT TOURTUE! Not to mention how I love Boo Boo’s goofy/manical laugh, a beautiful product of John Kricfalusi’s voice (Yes; I know that he was a formerly abusive megalomaniac who still has ADHD, but God knows what cartoons would be like today—at least those produced in Burbank and Canada—if it wasn’t for the many layout artists that he led).

Also unnatural to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon is the extreme levels of slapstick, wackiness and graphic nature of cartoons since such shows as Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, Beany and Cecil’s DiC reboot, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. Boo Boo and now Cindy Bear are licking away at all of the honey... and bees... with insanely long tongues (may be that they’re sloth bears?). This left Yogi Bear practically speechless.

The mere sequence of dialogue between Yogi and Ranger Smith, discussing what to do about Boo Boo, involved HEAVY work in the storyboards by Vincent Waller. So many expressions that they couldn’t fit in each of Spümcø’s 3-panel storyboard pages!

As you see, in addition to Vincent Waller’s storyboards, John K. added extra poses (storyboard revisions more or less, but definitely layout poses) under the respective scenes. That way, Vincent could focus on telling and writing the story in rough pictures. (source of storyboards)

I also love the sound design. While it’s definitely true to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, John K. and the late Henry Porch were very creative with some weird, dated and out-of-context sound effects, similar to what they and Horta Editorial did on The Ren & Stimpy Show in the first two seasons. The production music (probably APM and Capitol Records) also gave it a vintage, nostalgic feel.

Ultimately, with the aforementioned abusive megalomaniac aside, Spümcø undoubtedly harbored some of the finest animators and artists ever. Such names as Bob Jaques (Spongebob Squarepants, Buy One, Get One Free*, The Baby Huey Show), Ben Jones (DC Super Hero Girls, Cats Don’t Dance, Teen Titans GO!), Vincent Waller (Spongebob Squarepants, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), Albert Lozano (Inside Out, A Kitty Bobo Show), Todd White (Spongebob Squarepants), Eric Koenig (Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Madagascar, Cats Don’t Dance, The Simpsons, and The Tigger Movie), and Erik Wiese (Samurai Jack, The Mighty B!) are among the hundreds of creatives who ended up almost everywhere working in Burbank and Canadian animation.

Other names on the Spümcø team that one might recognize include Gabe Swarr (Dexter’s Laboratory, The Buzz on Maggie, Foe Paws, El Tigre), and even background artists such as Richard Daskas ( @rdaskas​ - Samurai Jack, Time Squad, Sym-Bionic Titan, Batman Beyond), Richard Ziehler-Martin (Tiny Toon Adventures, The Wacky World of Tex Avery), Hector Martinez (Tom and Jerry: Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse, Timone and Pumba, Captain N, Evil Con Carne, Dora the Explorer), and Tony Mora (MAD, Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, Pickle and Peanut). I mean: in short, these artists worked for Warner Bros. Animation, Disney Television Animation and Walt Disney Feature Animation, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network Studios!

Spümcø’s production assistants on Boo Boo Runs Wild feature Matt Danner —a fantastic character designer, storyboard artists, director and producer, whose credits range from (Johnny Test and The Legend of the Three Caballeros to Team Hot Wheels and The Looney Tunes Show—and Cartoon Brew editor Amid Amidi. Brian A. Miller was an executive in charge of production, not for but probably in association with Cartoon Network.

Overall, Boo Boo Runs Wild introduced me to the cartoon studio whose works I took for granted and on which I was missing out all of my life, and I strongly encourage this generation to support this Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode, which you can watch RIGHT NOW on [adult swim]’s site. It was officially on their YouTube channel, but it was removed for unknown reasons. This short never even got a DVD or VHS release!
The last televised airing of Boo Boo Runs Wild on [adult swim] so far was January 6th, 2019 A.D., but Spümcø also produced “A Day in the Life of Ranger Smith” and “Boo Boo and the Man” (based on true events in the life of John Kricfalsui) for Cartoon Network.

As I come to a close, it’s worth noting that layout Ed Benedict, an animator and artist whose credits go all of the way back to the 1930s with Disney and continued with MGM and Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network Studios, originally worked on Yogi Bear episode “Yogi’s Birthday Party” as a layout artist, and reprised that very role for “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. What a legacy the animators and artists of this episode leave!

Always will I remember how Spümcø, whose legacy connects to my Cartoon Network-infused childhood, blessed me and graced me that fateful day, August 13th, 2016 A.D., with the ultimate example of the fine art of cartooning that is the Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. I was living in the moment, and I thank God for it.
“For years they have [been] asking me to make new Yogi cartoons, but I can’t even get a half a million [dollars] to make one, probably because I actually like the characters, but 60-70 million $ to make walking corpses is economical.” - John Kricfalsui on Yogi Bear (2010)
Another Ranger Smith, Boo Boo or Yogi Bear cartoon from the people behind The Ren & Stimpy Show is highly unlikely today, due to the abuse and harassment of John K. angering the world to the point of hating and condemning the man who helped to shape not only Cartoon Network but also television animation—and animation as a whole—with an undeniable legacy of artists and animators who deserve way more credit and respect than we perhaps thought of giving as kids.

Wiki! Redo Revisions: Sexual Assault Allegations against John Lasseter
In January of 2019, John Lasseter stepped down from his position as Chief Creative Officer over both Pixar and Disney’s animation studios. As I read through the article at that time, I found Lasseter’s statements extremely underwhelming. He claimed he had taken “missteps” and that he was sorry “to anyone who has ever been on the receiving end of an unwanted hug or any other gesture they felt crossed the line in any way, shape, or form,” and I found my eyes stuck on that phrase, “unwanted hug or any other gesture.” I was thinking to myself that there must be more to the story for a man, who had a net worth of $100 million dollars and was in charge of two of the most successful and prominent animation studios in the world, to voluntarily step down from a company he played a pivotal role in creating. As someone who had extensive knowledge of animation history and the history of both studios, I was extremely confused as to why John Lasseter, one of the most influential advocates for computer animation, would step down from the company and technology he pioneered, to go and work for another studio because of a few “unwanted hugs.” 
John Lasseter had been one of the most influential individuals in animation history. He had pioneered computer animation and was a driving force behind bringing that technology to Disney. His influence was not inconsequential, he was one of the most powerful people in animation. So, when I read through all of this, it just didn’t add up to me. It didn’t add up, I was so sure there had to be more to the story. I had forgotten about it until now, and once I found the Wikipedia article for this assignment, I read through it. When I found the section about the allegations, I found one quote detailing the unwanted “grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes.” While this was more than what Lasseter himself had described, it still felt like it must be an understatement. So I decided to do some more investigation into the matter, and thanks to the bravery of a former Pixar employee, I found a full account of the sexist workplace environment Lasseter had created and more details of the allegations against him. Most of the statements and quotes from victims were anonymous, in order to protect their careers within the tightly knit animation community, however Cassandra Smolcic came forward after working at Pixar for 7 years. Her detailed account of how difficult it was to speak out against these microaggressions shed more light onto Lasseter’s discreet departure. 
The first revision I made was fixing the language of the first sentence. The original statement was as follows: “In November 2017, Lasseter took a six-month leave of absence after acknowledging allegations of workplace sexual misconduct that he described as "missteps" with employees in a memo to staff.” I changed it to “In November 2017, Lasseter took a six-month leave of absence after allegations of workplace sexual misconduct.” I made this revision in order to take out Lasseter’s underwhelming characterization of his behavior from the first sentence regarding these allegations. I find the inclusion of said quotation to undermine the reality of his harmful actions and to also exclude the voices of women from the account of this problem. This is an example of implicit bias in favor of a powerful man who had abused his power to objectify women in the workplace. The next revision I made was to write an additional paragraph, citing Smolcic’s account of his behaviors at work. Originally there had been no additional information regarding what exactly he had been accused of, and it included no quotations or citations of the women Lasseter assaulted. I felt the exclusion of these quotations failed to give voice to the victims, another example of how the exclusion of information is a form of implicit bias.  
Lastly I added more information in the second section about Lasseter’s departure from Pixar and his new position at Skydance Studios. This section only quoted Lasseter, painting himself as someone who “deeply” regretted his actions, and felt acknowledging this behavior would “make him a better leader,” further undermining the unsafe environment Lasseter created at Pixar Studios. In order to remain as neutral as possible, I left this quotation in this section in order to allow Lasseter to speak for himself and to keep record of Lasseter’s statement. But in order to challenge the implicit bias of only quoting Lasseter and Skydance, I added an additional paragraph about how Skydance’s decision to hire Lasseter was not unanimously supported by Skydance employees. In fact, both the actress Emma Thompson and director Alessandro Carloni left the production of the 2021 film “Luck,” after Lasseter’s hiring. Since Emma Thompson made a public statement claiming the reason she left was because of Lasseter joining the production team, I felt giving her a voice as a woman in the entertainment industry would be much better than silence. This was another example of how omitting a certain perspective is indicative of implicit bias.

Allegations of sexual misconduct and exit from Disney/Pixar

In November 2017, Lasseter took a six-month leave of absence after allegations of workplace sexual misconduct.[45] The alleged misconduct towards employees included "grabbing, kissing, [and] making comments about physical attributes".[8][9] The alleged conduct became so well known that, according to Variety, at various times, Pixar had "minders who were tasked with reining in his impulses.” 
Additionally, former Pixar employee, Cassandra Smolcic, wrote an essay in order to share her experiences of sexism and harassment while working at Pixar. She was told that it had been decided that was “best if you don’t attend art reviews on this production. John has a hard time controlling himself around young pretty girls, so it will be better if we just keep you out of sight.” She also provided details about how John Lasseter behaved at social events outside of work, claiming that “Quite a few of my female friends refused, year after year, to enter the costume contest — even if they’d worked for hours on a prize-worthy outfit — because of how infamously uncomfortable the costume parade became.” All other sources on John Lasseter’s behavior remain anonymous, with one anonymous source asserting that he witnessed Lasseter place “his hand on her knee, though, moving around." This male Pixar employee later asked the woman about this occurrence and reported that, "She said it was unfortunate for her to wear a skirt that day and if she didn't have her hand on her own right leg, his hand would have traveled."  
In June 2018, Disney announced that Lasseter was leaving the company at the end of the year, taking a consulting role until then. 
Skydance Animation
On January 9, 2019, Lasseter was hired to head Skydance Animation, which will produce animated films with Paramount Animation and Ilion Animation Studios.[1] In a statement, Lasseter expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, adding "I have spent the last year away from the industry in deep reflection, learning how my actions unintentionally made colleagues uncomfortable, which I deeply regret and apologize for. It has been humbling, but I believe it will make me a better leader."[1]
During a meeting at Skydance that same month, Lasseter expressed regret over his actions at Disney and Pixar. Lasseter said that ,"[he] will continue to work every day for the rest of [his] life to prove [...] that [he has] grown and learned".[47] An investigation conducted prior to his hiring found that no previous claims of sexual assault, propositioning or harassment had been filed against Lasseter,[47] and "[...] there were no findings of secret settlements by Disney or Lasseter to any parties asking for a settlement.” 
However, Skydance’s decision to hire Lasseter was met with internal controversies. Both Emma Thompson and director Alessandro Carloni  left the production of the upcoming 2021 film, “Luck,” Thompson, leaving with a publicly published letter to the studio, questioned why the studio “would consider hiring someone with Mr. Lasseter’s pattern of misconduct given the present climate in which people with the kind of power that you have can reasonably be expected to step up to the plate.” She also asked the studio if the women working at Skydance were “supposed to feel comforted that women who feel that their careers were derailed by working for Lasseter DIDN’T receive money?” 
According to The Hollywood Reporter, inside sources have said that Alessandro Carloni left the project after this letter was published, citing “creative differences” as the explanation behind Carloni’s departure. (387 words)
