Should Yakko, Wakko & Dot be animated in flash?
With the 3rd & final season of the Animaniacs revival premiering on Hulu this Friday, I’m not surprised if Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver & Copernicus Studios in Halifax, Nova Scotia would animate Yakko, Wakko & Dot in flash using the Adobe Animate software. hi mike!
i hope this reaches you well! i just watched hill house for the first time (absolutely stunning, the themes of grief resonated heavily with me) and have been hyping myself up to cry over bly manor again.
i was wondering if there’s any hope for another haunting series? bly manor and hill house are some of my favorite shows ever, and i would love to see more in that sort of genre.
(p.s. hush is what got me into horror, i just recently found out it came from YOU, so thank you for igniting a passion for me)
Hi! I'm afraid there really doesn't seem to be a path for any more Haunting series, at least with my involvement - I'm no longer at Netflix, and I'm deep into new projects that I'm incredibly excited about, and are monopolizing my availability for years.
I'll always be grateful to The Haunting - it started my career in television - but I think that chapter of my life is closed. That doesn't mean there won't ever be more - Netflix, Amblin and Paramount own the rights and could exploit them whenever they want for new adaptations, but I imagine it's highly unlikely that I'd be involved. Never say never, I suppose!

A musical analysis of Animaniacs
Tumblr media
The music in Animaniacs, at least in my humble opinion, is one of the strongest and most notible attributes of the show. Music is so attached to the brand of Animaniacs, and I honestly believe that the show wouldn't be as iconic and prevelent in our pop culture if it wasn't for its score.
To understand just how much music impacts the legacy of this show, we have to first understand the man who was behind all of the iconic tunes we know and love.
Tumblr media
This is Richard Stone. Born in Philadelphia in 1953, Stone is a composer who graduated from Jacob's School Of Music in Indiana. After graduating, he moved out west to LA to compose music for various shows and movies such as Northshore and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Eventually, in the late 80s, he would sign a contract with Amblin Entertainment to compose the music for Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Freakazoid and all the other Speilberg Cartoons that were coming out in the 90s. Stone would go on to win several emmy awards for his composition of Animamiacs, winning in catagories such as "outstanding music direction and composition" and "outstanding original song". With such a talented composer at first base, its no wonder that the music in Animaniacs is of such high quality.
So how exactly does Animaniacs' soundtrack seperate itself from other cartoons of its kind? For starters, every episode is composed with a complete original soundtrack, conducted all under the talented Richard Stone. No soundtrack is ever reused, ever; every episode's score is completly unique to fit the tone of the story.
There are a couple noteworthy soundcues that are present in a majority of episodes. For example, that four note melody that plays at the beginning and end of most episodes (it's the one that plays when the WB logo is shown in the intro). Supposedly, the short melody is set to the lyrics "I'm-Rich-ard-stone" after the name of the composer.
Another notable detail about Animaniacs' score is the heavy usage of the xylophone.
Tumblr media
I kid you not, there is not a single soundtrack throughout the entirety of Animaniacs (as well as every other Speilberg cartoon) that does NOT utilize the xylophone in some way. The xylophone most often plays when a character runs in or out of frame, or when a character does a specific action. Stone loved to incorperate the xylophone into the show.
Now let's talk about the song numbers in Animaniacs, 'cause oh boy, there is a bunch! The song numbers in Animaniacs are handled with such care and attention; it's amazing how far the writers went to putting so many layers and detail into the lyrics of these catchy tunes.
Take Yakko's World for example, which is probably the most famous musical number from the show. The entire song is just Yakko naming every single country of the world while pointing at a map. It's so simple, but the song is so effective at acheiving it's messege: to teach the audience (mainly children in elementary school) about the nations of the world.
You'll be surprised at how educational these song numbers are. The majority of these songs were implemented into the show as a sneaky way of abiding by the Children's Television Act that was put in place in the 90s. While these songs were mostly written as a requirement by the network, the quality and care was still put into these simple songs to make them good. They didn't have to do this, but they did it anyway for the sake of quality. It's the small details like these that make me appreciate just how clever and witty the writer's of this show were.
Now, you might be asking yourselves: how do I percieve the music of this show as a fan? In all honesty, I have nothing but respect for Richard Stone and all the talented song writers and musicians that worked to create such a spectacular and clever score for Animaniacs. The music they made will truly stand the test of time. Without their creative imput, Animaniacs wouldn't be nearly as iconic and memorable as it is.
Thank you Richard Stone. May you rest in peace.

Lichen and Moss ~ Blog 9
As we near the end of the semester in this course, I can say with certainty that I am a Nature interpreter, and that interpretation is all around us. It works to enrich our daily lives and serves as a motivator when we may least expect it. In our textbook reading for this week, one story struck me. A father and his son were visiting Gunnison National Park, but the boy was eager to leave the trail. One man noticed the pair and offered to take them to a spot where they could see a bighorn ram. The son was in awe, and now he was refusing to leave the trail as he was memorized by the animal. Honestly, if I saw one in real life too, I would also be memorized. This moment in the boy’s life was probably a stepping stool in his future with nature. It shows that unexpected experiences can change one’s life.
For this week's blog, we were asked to write about the most amazing thing we know about nature. Recently I started watching this documentary on Netflix called “Life on Our Planet”. I haven't watched a Nature series in a while, but I thought why not? This series is like no other I’ve ever watched, and I highly recommend anyone who has Netflix to check it out! It recounts the evolution of our planet and all the stages of life and hostility on Earth.
Before the age of the dinosaurs, our planet was completely desolate and inhospitable. According to the documentary, it almost resembled the moon, covered in dead volcanoes and craters. I know for me it's hard to imagine our world like that, but it's also immensely fascinating that it used to be like that. However, even before this, life underwater had thrived for more than a billion years. From this emerged lichen, a curious life-form that is neither a plant nor an animal. Almost like fungi, and they are a combination of fungi and algae. Lichen spread rapidly over our planet and worked to break apart and infiltrate rocks that covered the land. Producing soil, and I’m sure we’re all familiar with the life-bearing properties of this medium.
From this first development of soil, came moss; which ruled and carpeted the planet for 40 million years!! This brought forth the evolution of plants that had lignin, which strengthens the cell walls of plants, allowing them to grow upwards. Trees and all different types of plants start shooting up, growing closer to the sky to get the best access to sunlight. Trees are the tallest living organisms on our planet, and this green evolution made the land hospitable to animals, insects, and all different types of creatures.
It’s honestly crazy to think that lichen and moss gave rise to all the greenery we see on our planet. Now when we look at plants, we know that their beginning was simple yet so profound that it changed the face of the Earth. I find that simply amazing, and I stumbled upon this finding because I wanted to watch a new documentary on Netflix. There’s beauty in the small things in life, quite literally.

Phil Bevan's TARDIS illustration (1995)
From "The Man Who Owns Doctor Who" in DWM 226
The article was an interview with Philip Segal of Amblin Television when they were working on a Doctor Who series:
At his convention panel, Philip received a standing ovation when he asserted his insistence on casting a British actor as the Doctor. He unveiled his plans for the series' new look, including a redesigned TARDIS console room. Pictured left is DWM artist Phil Bevan's interpretation of how the new set could appear, based on Philip Segal's description. To the far left is the Infinity Chamber – a "window onto the universe". The console itself is far larger, connecting to the ceiling, and the room is cathedral-like in scale and atmosphere.
That series ultimately became the TV movie and you can definitely see where the basic ideas of 8's TARDIS came from.
(The first image is scanned directly from DWM 226. The second image is from @umbrellasareforever's header image. Does anyone have the full, uncropped image?)

Masters of the Air Is Emblematic of Our Changed TV Landscape
By Sean Fennell | January 29, 2024 | 11:45am
By all appearances Masters of the Air closely follows the path laid down by its predecessors. All three series are based on nonfiction novels and first person accounts, aiming, it would seem, to remove the glossy, melodramatic sheen of some of Hollywood’s previous depictions of war—this one pulling from Donald L. Miller’s Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. Spielberg and Hanks are, once again, involved this time around, as are their production companies, Playtone and Amblin. Structurally, Masters of the Air follows the pattern laid out by Band of Brothers and The Pacific: beginning each episode with a dramatic intro set to its sweeping score before transitioning to stories broadly framed around specific missions enacted by our heroes. As you might have guessed, recreating the horrid, chaotic theater of war is no small undertaking. According to reports, each of the three series’ also have a budget eclipsing $200 million, making them all huge bets by their creators.
And yet, this might be the most illustrative in talking about what sets these series apart. It might sound obvious, but $200 million in 2001 and 2024 are two very different things and help illustrate how almost every single thing about what we call television has changed since 2001. As mentioned, Band of Brothers was an absolutely massive undertaking, a war epic stretched from a single feature film to something five times that size, and the most expensive miniseries of all time upon its release. This was unlike anything HBO had ever done and probably would not have gotten off the ground without the help of Hanks and Speilberg, perhaps the most powerful actor and director of the moment. That investment certainly paid off, with its first episode bringing in over 10 million viewers and becoming a genuine sensation...
These changes are reflected on the screen as well, where the fundamentals of what TV is expected to be has changed just as drastically as the budget. For all the money poured into Band of Brothers, it is not a star-driven enterprise. Aside from a splashy bit of casting that found David Schwimmer playing the unlikable drill sergeant Herbet Sobel, Band of Brothers is a pure ensemble drama. There are faces you might recognize—Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Donnie Wahlberg—but they are far from the selling point of the series. This largely reflected TV as a whole in 2001, a place where you made your name in hopes of moving on to bigger and better things. Nowadays, TV is not the stepping stone but the pedestal, and that is evident from the first minutes of Masters of the Air.
Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and Barry Keoghan are some of the brightest young stars in Hollywood and they are placed, for better or worse, at the center of Masters of the Air. One of the common complaints around Band of Brothers when it first premiered was how the nature of the battle scenes often led to confusion around who was who, the swirl of chaos as disorienting for the viewer as the soldiers on the ground. This is not the case with Masters of the Air, and not just because we move the action from the battlefield to the cockpit. We know right away who our heroes are this time around. Turner’s Major Egan, Butler’s Major Cleven, and Keoghan’s Lt. Biddick are so magnetic and given such distinct focus as to be unmissable even in their quietest moments. Listen, having stars like these is never going to be to a show’s detriment, but it does have a way of driving the viewer experience and the way the story is told, in a manner that can’t be ignored, ultimately setting it apart from its predecessors..."
Want to know why Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg actually made Masters of The Air? It's a Hunk Fest...for SOMEBODY. Nice of Paste Magazine to take note of the difference in focus between Masters Of The Air and the former blockbuster, Band Of Brothers. It's to showcase certain actors, including Austin Butler Ncuti Gatwa and Barry Keoghan AGAIN. But at least Slate Magazine admits that this entire project is for Lavender eye candy.
"If you’re into slowly paced war dramas, then you should already be amped over this release. But Masters of the Air is not just for the history buffs—it is also a treat for anyone with eyes. I’m not just talking about the cinematography, though it is stunning: What I mean is that the casting directors clearly took a page from Band of Brothers’ and Top Gun’s well-thumbed books and searched far and wide for some of the industry’s hunkiest rising stars to portray these servicemen.
The series is so chock-full of strapping young men with slicked-back hair that it’s almost distracting. Never fear, we’re here to break it down for you.
As Slate’s resident expert in all things Austin Butler and swoon-worthy thespians, I present: a guide to Masters of the Air’s many aviators-sporting studs.."
