THIRD PERSON POV

to the untrained eye, chris and y/n looked like another happy couple, watching the world in rose tinted glasses. but in reality, they were two heartbroken and lost people trying to navigate their unrequited love stories by convincing themselves they love each other.

chris had fallen in love with a girl, alyssa, back in boston when he was eighteen, but timing was never on his and her side, so he sought the comfort of other girls that resembled her.

and y/n was the closest to alyssa he had come across.

y/n had fallen in love with a guy in los angeles when she was seventeen, and they had been together for a couple years before josh had shut down the idea of them being together in the future.

so she began searching for him in every guy she met in passing, and she stumbled across chris at a party and the striking resemblance led her back to his house.

they knew from the very start that their relationship should’ve never gone on longer than that night. but they were so desperate for the comfort of the ones their hearts belonged to, that they kept seeking comfort from the people who were close enough to them.

y/n and chris were almost enough for each other, they so close to the ones they loved that they really could’ve fooled themselves if it weren’t for the small details that stuck out like warning signs.

chris really truly thought he could learn to fall in love with y/n, if only her hair was a few shades darker, her eyes were a shade lighter, and if her freckles were in the same place as alyssa’s.

and y/n really would’ve believed that she was in love with chris if he woke up a little earlier to go for a walk, if he drank his coffee with two sugars and a little creamer, and if his eyes were a darker blue.

they told themselves that they did love each other they just needed to stick around a little longer, to bring everything to light so they could have that big revelation, yet it wasn’t coming. the lies had become so natural that they had themselves fooled. they ignored people when they questioned the nature of what sparked their relationship, knowing it wasn’t healthy.

as much as they helped each other in one way or another, they knew they had to end it. they deserved better and they knew they needed to confront their true feelings. so they both silently vowed to end it.

so when chris approached y/n at a party they had attended separately, y/n knew that time had come. so as the two bid their respective friends goodbye, the two of them left side by side, solemnly making their way to the park down the road.

as they sat on the swings, they were both incredibly melancholic as they talked about their days.

“y/n, this isn’t healthy. you deserve someone who can actually love you, someone that can remember the way you take your coffee with four sugars because three isn’t enough and five is too much and two splashes of creamer, or the way you don’t go out of your way to listen to frank ocean because he makes you sad but ivy is the song you sing to calm yourself down. someone who finds those things endearing and doesn’t roll their eyes at it. someone who knows what you like and don’t like and that knowledge comes to them without hesitation.”

“i wanted to love you, i really thought i could learn to, and maybe it’s because you reminded me so much of her but you’re not like her. you’re your own person who is so incredibly interesting and kind and smart and i know for a fact that i would be head over heels in love with you in another life. in another dimension it would make sense for me to love you, but unfortunately, we’re in this dimension and this life, and my heart belongs to someone else.”

with a sad smile and a gentle nod, y/n rose from her swing, pressing a kiss to chris’ cheek before muttering a soft “yeah.” before walking away, silently wishing that things could’ve been different.

but they were always going to remember each other as their epic, heartbreakingly epic, “wrong person right time” love story. thankful they had each other to rely on for the time they knew each other, for how familiar they had gotten with each other’s heart before they had to part.

and maybe one day, they’d become something epic in this life.

Annabelle Pham was born in San Jose, California and raised in an Asian immigrant household in South San Francisco. Growing up working class, her parents encouraged her to pursue her education while also helping raise her sickly younger brother, RJ. Playing softball and being a bit of a rebel, despite her shortcomings, Annabelle had the opportunity to attend an Ivy league college on a partial scholarship, which she rejected after her father's restaurant was vandalized and robbed.

Rather than use the money for school, she pushed her family to use it to repair their restaurant. Annabelle would choose to attend a 2 year college in a CTE program since it was more affordable, working part time in her family's restaurant while she searched for new employment.

While job searching, she became curious about the recruiters office in her neighborhood, and next thing she knew, she was in the army (much to her mother and father's disappointment.)

At some point, then Private Annabelle "Kit" Pham would meet CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell while fighting alongside SAC/SOG officer Alex Keller. Impressed by the young woman's resolve and improvisation, Laswell would choose Anna as one of the three women she'd first suggest to join Taskforce 141 to John Price.

While hiding from enemy forces who'd kidnapped her in a foreign city, Annabelle's quick thinking kept her alive while her teammates were delayed on their rescue.

Anna got her callsign "Gremlin" from her unpredictable and unhinged behavior thanks to her fellow Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick. Hiding in walls, crawling in vents and ambushing enemies easily thanks to her small stature and the old fashioned element of surprise.

Smart, resourceful and good with her hands, she's a loyal friend and a cautious person whose instincts are good if they aren't clouded by her own feelings. Anna is a hopeless romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve, which can be a good and a bad thing...Especially when a certain Commander seeks to exploit it.

Who would be the DC parents for the Science Kids? I can see Aurore being Aquaman’s daughter (and creating fake rain with hydrokenisis like Lapis on Room for Ruby). Jean would be Zatanna’s for obvious reasons. Simon could be Flash’s kid (using his speed to edit his videos even quicker) and Reshma’s could be Poison Ivy, I guess (reference to class of heroes, where she is Isabella).

Briar did not remember much of her life before Lunar Cove. It was nothing but the unreliable memory of a toddler. The imagination of a girl who wanted nothing more than to have her family together. Or so that was what she was made to believe. Growing up, Briar thought about the stories her mother weaved for her and her older siblings. She held to them like the only faith she had in the world. If she couldn’t count on her family or mother, then there was no one she could trust. As a young girl, she often daydreamed in child-like wonder; the world was her oyster, everything at her fingertips so long as she could open a book and explore fantastic places far and wide. The young and impressionable Reed sibling was a true ingenue, malleable in the capable albeit specifically motivated hands of Alyssa Reed. Eager to be seen as good, Briar did precisely as she was told, the ever-dutiful, always perfect daughter. It wasn’t, perhaps, who she was meant to be. Rather than it was who she was told to be. 

After all, Briar admired her mother; from her young perception, Alyssa was a force of nature who championed herself and sought out what she wanted without hesitation. Briar was too young and accustomed to the rose-colored glasses she wore to see her mother as anything else. Even the bite of her disappointment at her perceived failures was only a manifestation of her love for her; at least, that is what Briar told herself. It didn’t matter how sharp Alyssa could be. Briar absorbed every perceived failure and pushed herself harder the next time, hoping for a tiny flutter of praise. Extremely goal-oriented striving for perfection made the perfect prize for the youngest Reed. The unachievable standard meant she was always working to be better, continually fearing disappointment to some degree or another. 

When her mother married Miles, while she was still impressionably young, he became another person for Briar to impress, another person whose approval could have made or broken her. Miles became the only father figure she knew; like her mother, he was an influential man with reach to the heavens as far as young Briar was concerned. In seeking his approval, some small part of Briar was soothed as there had always been this desperate cry in her mind telling her it was her fault their father abandoned them. If she could make it up to them all somehow, then the yawning chasm in the pit of her stomach would someday close up, and she’d feel peace. She took this burden onto herself, spending all her time curating the image of the perfect daughter, student, coven member, and beyond. Sometimes it felt like it would never be good enough, a thought that came with immeasurable amounts of anxiety that she coped with in a variety of ways, usually distraction, obsessing over the things she could control what she wore, how she looked, the music that played and more. 

Most people would have cracked under the pressure Briar was under. Still, she thrived in the hostility, rising to the occasion repeatedly, never deterred for as much as the public knew she was the image of perfection. Almost no one got a peak beneath her mask, just as she wanted. All of her efforts pushed her towards each goal she had for herself, an Ivy school where she would study history and experience the world beyond Lunar Cove. She would achieve her doctorate, and once she was an accomplished woman on her own, she would return to her home, to her coven, and be a dutiful member and create a life she’d always imagined for herself. However, even the best-laid plans fall apart. She knew nothing would be the same again after Poppy took her sabbatical. Leaving wouldn’t be an option, not in any meaningful way, not for her. 

Years after Poppy’s departure, when Linden followed suit, Briar was flooded with feelings, resenting that she could never do as they did- wondering if it was easy and jealous that she could not be as free as they were. In her most secret feelings, Briar felt much like a trapped bird behind the safe walls of Lunar Cove- she should have been thankful to have a place where she could exist fearlessly. It didn’t stop her from taking short, secret trips out of Lunar Cove and into the surrounding cities. The trips were always quick, a few hours here and there- never too long or close together. It was a small taste of the world. At least, that was what Briar told herself to satisfy the urge to see so much more than what she felt destined to. In the end, her responsibility was to her home, her family, and her coven. Adapting as she often did, Briar attended college online, taking a few classes at the local community college and earning her history degree. With it, she worked for the historical society as a consultant, often overseeing the validity of historical artifacts and uncovering their hidden stories. Briar loved her career; it was perhaps one of the first things she loved about herself; she was good at it and effortlessly so- so much of her life had been a carefully curated act of ease when in truth, she worked herself into exhaustion to appear as she did. She was an accomplished historian, publishing online articles on her history blog that gained notice in the historical sphere. Every accomplishment came with the caveat, no travel, no chance to accept an award unless it was to be given in Lunar Cove. Her self-imposed cage only served to further disenchant Briar with the life she was living. 

Yet she pushed onward, finding herself engaged to a man she wasn’t sure she loved as much as her mother did, only accepting the proposal after some not-so-subtle encouragement from her mother. He was lovely, engaging, and talented, and if this was to be her life, then at least if she could not have love, she could have joy. Yet, as things do, that too fell apart in months. The sudden death of her stepfather set off a domino effect of events that Briar could never have imagined in her wildest dreams. Through her grief and loss, she was to take the supreme trials blowing through them, confident of her future full of hope and excitement of the good she could accomplish for the coven, only to fail. If the failure were not devastating enough, it would destroy her when the new supreme was none other than her sister. 

Briar could not reconcile with the warring feelings that tore through her at the moment. It was as if every awful feeling ever flickered, ignited, and burned through her. Poppy was supreme, talented, and someone she undeniably admired and loved, but there was a painful part of Briar that festered with resentment; if all she had worked for in her entire life was not meant for her, then who was she? The ancestors denying her felt like a loss of self-sealed when in the end, they picked someone so close to her. The devastating news did not stop rolling as in time, after Poppy’s rise to supreme, she and her siblings discovered the hard truth that their birth father, Silas Chamberlain, did not abandon them. Anger did not cover the storm she felt, and even after her mother soothed these feelings of distrust and betrayal with the truth of her father’s character, Briar still felt the sting of years lost. It seemed as if Alyssa was only trying to protect and keep them safe, yet the lies were harder to smooth away. 

In public, Briar did her best to keep her suffering under wraps, but those who knew her well enough could have seen the unraveling coming to fruition. One by one, Briar altered aspects of her life, ending her engagement despite her mother’s protests, followed by a sabbatical from her beloved career after finding herself enamored by the work she could do at The Pendulum. It wasn’t a part of her plan; none of this was, and despite still feeling the flickering ache of all her losses and disappointments at once, Briar is doing her best to create a different path for herself.

“A hearts game is the hardest, you know?” he teased. She nodded and rested her head on his shoulder, his arm coming up to wrap around her, as he guided her toward their hotel for the evening. The sun was setting ahead of them and they watched it before heading inside the hotel. They went to the highest floor, a penthouse suite his employer so graciously arranged for them.

The room was covered in red rose petals, trailing around the room and to the bed. He let go of her and kissed the top of her head. His eyes found hers briefly before she looked away and he explained the game.

“Follow the path of rose petals until you get to me. There will be stops along the way, read each letter. The challenge in this hearts game is to try not to cry. But don’t worry—nothing bad will happen if you do.”

He walked away from her and into the bedroom to wait.

Alyssa followed the trail of rose petals. The first stop was in the little kitchen of the suite, a red cake with “ily” on top. She read the letter next to it:

“I love the way your eyes light up when you see your favorite desserts. It’s just pure, unadulterated bliss. The way your eyes sparkle and you do a little bounce of excitement? You were 17 and I saw you do that for the first time when we went to that hibachi restaurant with all our friends. She followed the trail of petals to the next letter, this one next to a little resin coffin containing a dried red rose.

“The first time I ever got you flowers, I kept one. I never told you but my mom had told me ‘Any time you give a girl flowers, keep one for yourself—when it dies, you get her new ones.’ I followed her advice but I kept that rose for years in a box of things I have from our relationship through the years. I thought you should have it now, one of the first flowers I ever bought you. The box I had made special because I know Halloween is your favorite and also, til death do us part, right?”

The next stop on the trail revealed a small photo album, full of pictures of them through the years. The pictures in the back of the book were anything but safe for work and her cheeks colored.

“You don’t need to read them all now,” he told her. “Honestly, I have plans to keep you busy the rest of the night after our nachos digest a little more.” She giggled and poked his stomach and he just groaned and swatted her hand away. “But I’ve been keeping this little list for a while. I’ve told you before but when this mission starts getting a little dark, when I start to lose myself, it’s thinking of you that keeps me sane, that grounds me. So I started making a list that I can pull up any time I need it. My list is on my phone but I wanted to show you the list and let you know all the reasons I love you.”

He pulled her closer to his side and kissed the top of her head. He knew better than to try and make eye contact with her right now, she was too shy for that, too embarrassed of all this attention he was bestowing on her. He just held her tighter, enjoying this time with her and savoring every moment as he always did.

Silas...dad,I don't know where I should begin, there is my whole life to account for and so much I still don't understand. Mom never truly spoke about you and all my questions in the past have been unanswered. I've only just now discovered where you are thanks to Jasmine. I want you to know if I had known sooner I would have reached out then. I've wanted to know you my entire life. I've spent years wondering what my life would have been like if I had been able to have you in it. Would things have turned out differently? Would I have been someone else? Would you? I don't think I believe in fate. I believe we have some control in it all. The choices we make determine the lives we live. I feel as if blaming fates absolves us of responsibility. I am tired of the choices others made for me affecting my life. So I'm writing you with no expectations. No motive or plan. But because it feels like a choice I can make for myself. A choice to attempt to know my father. Whoever he is. For better or worse. It's my choice. I like to think you'd understand that. I'd like to imagine that you would understand me. If you don't respond I'll take that as an answer to all my questions. I'll accept it the best I can. I'm afraid to inform you that I've hardly ever been one to accept a lack of answers. I usually find my own ways of finding the things I want to know. And I'd like to know you. I suppose I'll start first. I'm a historian and I was accepted into a few Ivy League schools. I ended up not going. It's a long story but it involves my mom and sister and somehow that ruined it for me. Maybe I'll explain more if you write back. I'm engaged. Probably not for much longer. I think it’s a mistake after everything that’s happened recently with my step father. With Poppy and the supreme. I had always wondered who would walk me down the aisle when I got married. But now that I've thought about it I think it's a pretty antiquated tradition. Cancelling would solve that ck drum anyway. I mean my stepdad he’s gone and you’re not here. It would have been a June wedding. I'm sure mom would plan it all for me if I let her. She has strong opinions. Usually knows what she's talking about. If I have any ideas of my own I let her think they’re hers. It’s smoother that way. I guess that might come off as manipulative. I just think it’s pragmatic. I’ve not told anyone these things. Perhaps it’s easier to tell you since I know nothing about you and you know nothing of me. Maybe I should try harder to curate some image and pretenses? But if I’m honest I’m not confident you’ll get this letter let alone respond. And its so draining to always be whatever everyone else expects. Before I ramble too much I should end with what I intended to do and ask about you. I’ve wondered if I had your nose or if you also think cilantro tastes like soap. Such mundane wondering for a life time of absence. I have also been curious, what magic did you end up with? I wonder if it's all random or has anything at all to do with genetics? I hope this letter is well received and that I will hear back from you. Your daughter, Briar-Rose.

It's been far too long, kiddo. How old are you now? Twenty-five? Thirty? I can't quite believe it. You're all grown up and I missed it. All thanks to that mother of yours. How is your mother by the way? I heard about the man she married. What was his name? Milo? Mick was it? Mickey? Mouse? It's a shame what happened to him. But, I also heard that your mother was never all too found of him anyway, so hopefully it wasn't too big of a loss.

You can call me dad by the way. I'd like that. I miss hearing your little voice call me dad. I don't know if you'd remember- you were only four when your mother took you away from me, but we used to stay up without her knowing. I'd read you stories and lift you up and fly you around the room. Tickle your little feet until you were laughing too loudly and then, there, Alyssa would be. I used to get in trouble for that a lot. Your mom never really knew how to have fun, did she? Either that or she just wanted to keep me from you even then. It's why I'm not all that surprised she's never spoken about me. Though she does check in from time to time. Did you know that? Had Mickey call the Correctional Facility once to check in, make sure I was still here and I think there might have been some request to cut back my phone service time or something of that regard. It was silly really. But, I want you to know that the time we lost was not out of me not wanting to see you or be apart of your life. You are my pride and joy.

Speaking of family, I'm so glad Jasmine found you. I knew she could do it. Like father, like daughter and now, my kids are reunited at last! My three baby girls. What I would give to see you all together. I assume Jasmine has talked about me? All good things, I hope and how is our newly appointed supreme? Is she hanging in there? Heavy is the head who wears the crown, I should know, but if anyone can carry on the Chamberlain mantel its the three of you. Well, four, if you count your brother. If only we could turn back time. Things would have been so different, little one. I could have helped you with your magic, shown you all of the potential that you have that you don't even know. We would have had so much fun together and I certainty would have never pushed you to marry someone that bland fiancé of yours. I'm sorry your mother kept you from going to school of your dreams, but don't be too hard on your sister and, if it helps, you don't need mortal school, little Rose. Not even an Ivy league can compete with what you were naturally given and what I can teach you out in the real world. Though, I do want to hear the story. What kept you from attending? Humor your old man. I certainty have a lot of free time now that I'm behind bars, which I hope doesn't scare you. Why I'm here is a long story in it of itself that I could tell you, if you'd like? The truth, that is? Feed that curious mind of yours?

My advice? Break off the engagement. He'll only hold you back and having your father walk you down the aisle isn't an antiquated tradition. One day I'd be honored to and there is nothing wrong with being pragmatic. Hold onto that trait and hold your own. Your mother is not that scary. But, let others continue to think your ideas are theirs. You may not get the instant gratification from it, but you'll go far if you remain quick on your feet like that. I also prefer this Briar. The one who chose to pick up a pen and write to their dear dad without pretenses and I hope she continues writing. I'd hate for the conversation to end here. So, I'll tell you what? Write back and I'll tell you all about my thoughts on cilantro and what abilities I have. What abilities did you develop by the way? I can let you know if we have any in common and what of your brother and sister? What abilities does Poppy have? I feel like I've been completely cut out of the three of your lives, but I'd like to change that if you'd let me.

⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (One out of Five)

I still have no idea what this book is about.

According to the blurb for the book, Allie is supposed to be making a decision about whether to leave behind her plans for the future, or join this new supernatural society. But the thing is, that's not even true. Nothing about what happens to her was ever her choice, and she just goes along with it. That's not empowerment, that's lunacy.

Levi is awful. He is controlling, manipulative, and cruel. There is nothing sexy about a man who doesn't know how to take "no" for an answer, and there's nothing alluring about a relationship based on lies. He frequently tricks the MC, forcing her into situations she "claims" she doesn't want.

The MC has no sense of self, no personality, and would probably jump of a bridge if you batted your eyelashes and asked her to.

The character who had the most (I use that word loosely) personality was written out toward the beginning of the book and we literally never hear from her again. She's supposed to be the MC's best friend, but is used more to fill in the slow plot than anything.

The writing style is disjointed and incomplete. The tense switches frequently, commas are either not used at all or used in the wrong places, and missing dialogue tags make it difficult to keep track of who's speaking. If anything, this novel is an incomplete first draft in need of a good content editor.

The most interesting (once again, used loosely) part of the story was the lore between all the different types of shifters. But instead of rich mythology, we're given Pteron supremacy and no real sense of why it's even that way.

Although I almost DNFd this book twice, I still finished, under the presumption that I'd get what was promised to me in the blurb and other reviews.

Seeing as that never happened, I will not be finishing the series.
