It’s so funny reading about queer male classic authors bc it seems like every single one of them-across continents even- knew each other by name. Like you’ll look up Bram Stoker or some shit and Wikipedia.org will say “had several orgies with Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman, hung out with Alaina Locke in spare time to shit talk F. Scott. Fitzgerald” and you have to say well okie dokie then

“…socially despised and yet artistically esteemed…”
This quote from Alain Locke can be applied to every non-Black person. Non-Black American people included.
Our subcultures, regional cultural characteristics (especially Southern Black American culture) are sooo extracted and copied, emulated and imitated, gleaned from while simultaneously being ridiculed, mocked and degraded.
Southern identifies, dialect and accents are belittled yet are modeled after and mimicked.
The specific disdain and shame for Southern Black American culture is truly something (which has really been highlighted since the announcement of this album).
And yeah, Beyoncé soo country! Been country! Is country and never shied away from it!

An Arctic memoir that looks cool~

Cane and Home to Harlem are two Harlem Renaissance classics
Alain Locke, father of the Harlem Renaissance, edited the anthology that cemented nationwide the idea that Black Americans did not need to assimilate into white culture or play into respectability politics to get ahead—instead they were creating their own culture, making a new canon of poetry, novels, dramas, music, and essays, all of which Locke collected in his anthology

The New Negro: An Interpretation, edited by Alain Locke, cover by Winold Reiss, 1925.
The New Negro: An Interpretation (1925) was an anthology of fiction, poetry, and essays on African and African-American art and literature. It was edited by Alain Locke, the first African-American Rhodes Scholar, who obtained a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard and who taught at Howard University for 35 years. The book is considered by literary scholars and critics to be the definitive text of the Harlem Renaissance. It included Locke's title essay, "The New Negro," as well as nonfiction essays, poetry, and fiction by Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, and Eric Walrond, among others. The anthology showed how Blacks sought social, political, and artistic change. Instead of accepting their position in society, Locke saw the "New Negro" as championing and demanding civil rights. His anthology also sought to change old stereotypes and replace them with new visions of Black identity that resisted simplification. The essays and poems in the anthology mirrored real-life events and experiences.

An American Friendship: Horace Kallen, Alain Locke, and the Development of Cultural Pluralism by David Weinfeld
An American Friendship: Horace Kallen, Alain Locke, and the Development of Cultural Pluralism by David Weinfeld
In An American Friendship, David Weinfeld presents the biography of an idea, cultural pluralism, the intellectual precursor to modern multiculturalism. He roots its origins in the friendship between two philosophers, Jewish immigrant Horace Kallen and African American Alain Locke, who advanced cultural pluralism in opposition to both racist nativism and the assimilationist “melting pot.” It is a…

Feyre is a shitty friend to Lucien if she’s ever been a friend to him at all
This is going to be a long post and yeah I have made two tiktoks about this already and yes people got very mad at me but I’m going to post in on here anyways!!
In Chapter 3 of ACOWAR, Lucien says, “You are a better friend to me, Feyre, than I ever was to you.”
And I couldn't disagree more. This is just so so wrong.  I think Feyre has been such a shitty friend to Lucien if she’s even been a friend to him at all.
If you can’t handle criticism towards Feyre then just scroll past!  And I have so many things to say but Feyre being a shitty friend definitely starts in ACOWAR.  She’s constantly lying to him, making wrong assumptions about him, she uses him.
And I understand that is all for her plan to take down Spring; she can’t really tell anyone the truth because it’ll ruin her cover but a lot of the things she does concerning Lucien and how she’s his friend, are kind of fucked up.
Constantly lying to him and using him in Spring
Now I thought the nightmare scene with Feyre and Lucien was excellent and very entertaining to read but when you think about how Feyre is using Lucien, her “friend”, in a sexual way to get back at Tamlin and turning them against each other…it makes her a shitty friend.
Chapter 5 of ACOWAR: I waited the five minutes it took Tamlin to decide not to kill Lucien, and then smiled. I wondered if Lucien had pieced it together…  A nightmare, I had told Tamlin. I was the nightmare. Preying on what Tamlin had feared from my very first days here… I had no doubt Tamlin was now running through every look and conversation since then.  Every time Lucien had intervened on my behalf…weighing how much that new mating bond with Alain held sway over his friend…
And she continuously gets Lucien to touch her to goad Tamlin’s jealousy and also Ianthe’s jealousy.  She does it very often while they’re in Spring: an example is when they sleep in the tent together.  They basically end up cuddling each other and Jurian sees.  And though it wasn’t on purpose, Feyre thinks about how it would be perfect if that got to Tamlin.
Chapter 6: I’d rolled onto Lucien’s bedroll at some point, any schemes indeed second to my most pressing demand—warmth.  But I had no doubt Jurian would tuck away the information to throw in Tamlin’s face when we returned: we’d shared a tent, and had been very cozy upon awakening.
She is using him.  She admits it when we get to the scene with Ianthe SAing Lucien.
Why she saved Lucien from Ianthe
And getting to this point soon:
So in an earlier conversation they have, Lucien talks about how he did the rite in Tamlin’s place and he completed it with Ianthe.  Feyre can see that lines were blurred.  Ianthe had continuously sought Lucien and she got what she wanted.  And Feyre says she should have been there to stop it.
Chapter 3 of ACOWAR: He might have completed the Great Rite with Ianthe of his own free will, but he certainly hadn’t enjoyed it.  Some line had been blurred—badly… The weight of that jeweled knife and belt seemed to grow.  “I wish I had been there to stop it.  I should have been there to stop it.”  I meant every word. Lucien squeezed our linked arms as we rounded a head, the house rising up before us.  “You are a better friend to me, Feyre,” he said quietly, “than I ever was to you.”
And this brings in the quote I brought up in the beginning. ANd I will make a whole separate post on Lucien’s inaction in ACOMAF but what he says just tells me that he feels guilty for not doing enough to help Feyre with Tamlin locking her up.
Feyre said she should have been there to stop it.  Alright well, when the time came and she was given an opportunity to stop Ianthe, Feyre was thinking about how she could keep going and just leave Ianthe to SA Lucien and let it happen.  She is going against her word.  and that makes her a hypocrite and terrible friend.
Chapter 9: Keep going.  They were distracted, horrible as it was. Keep going, keep going, keep going. “I thought you’d seek me out after the Rite,” Ianthe purred.  They couldn’t be more than thirty feet through the trees.  Far enough away not to hear my presence, if I was quiet enough.
And Feyre realizes that her using Lucien was a bad move, so Feyre’s guilt encourages her to save Lucien not out of any genuine friendship.
“You don’t act that way with Feyre.” A silk-wrapped threat. “You’re mistaken.” “Am I?” Twigs and leaves crunched, as if she was circling him.  “You put your hands all over her.” I had done my job too well, provoked her jealousy too much with every instance I’d found ways to get Lucien to touch me in her presence, in Tamlin’s presence.
But another thing that causes her to save him is because this moment reminds her of when Ianthe assaulted Rhys.
I made it about a hundred yards into the cover of the trees before I halted. I heard Lucien first. “Back off” A low female laugh. Everything in me went still and cold at that sound.  I’d heard it once before—in Rhysand’s memory.
and Lucien saying “do not touch me” is exactly what Rhys says and this is what pulls Feyre out of her plans to keep going and save him instead.
Chapter 21 of ACOMAF: Rhys learned close to breathe in her ear, “don’t you ever touch me.  Don’t ever touch another male in my court.”
Chapter 9 of ACOWAR: “Do not touch me,” he growled. And then I was moving.
This moment is echoing Ianthe going after Rhys, from the way Ianthe acts to the hand-breaking situation because Feyre was replicating what Rhys did to Ianthe’s hand.  And in my opinion, Feyre breaking her hand was not only revenge for Lucien but also revenge for Rhys.  And that’s not inherently bad but Feyre is not saving Lucien because she’s a good friend and she cares for his well-being.  If that were true, she would have never thought of leaving him to get SAed by her in the first place.
Not trusting him, questioning his priorities
When they’re traveling through Autumn she continues to not trust him, she continues to make assumptions about him and assume the worst.  She questions his priorities when it comes to Elain and assumes that he’s only coming along to get what he’s owed.  But then she wants him to have sympathy for her and Rhys as mates.  It’s just very one-sided.
Chapter 12: “You kissed Under the Mountain.” “I had little choice in that as I did with the dancing.” “And yet this is the male you now love.” “He didn’t know—he had no inkling of the personal history, the secrets, that had opened my heart to the High Lord of the Night Court.  They were not my stories to tell. “One would think, Lucien, that you’d be glad I fell in love with my mate, given that you’re in the same situation Rhys was in six months ago.”
Compare this to Chapter 11:
“And that’s why you’re here.  Not because it’s right and he’s always been wrong, but just so you can get what you think you’re owed.” “She is my mate and in my enemy’s hands—“
So Rhys and Lucien were in the same situation: both had their mates in their enemy’s hands and want to keep them safe.  Was Rhys only getting what he thought he was owed as well?  No.  So why can’t Feyre offer the same courtesy?
Again, ready to abandon him in Spring
And there’s literally a part when they're running in Autumn where Lucien basically asks “are you actually my friend?” and Feyre doesn’t answer.
Chapter 11: “You have the gall to question my priorities regarding Elain—yet what was your motive where I was concerned?  Did you plan to spare me from your path of destruction because of any genuine friendship, or simply of fear of what it might do to [Elain]?” I didn’t answer.  “Well?  What was your grand plan for me before Ianthe interfered?” I pulled at a stray thread in the bedroll.  “You would have been fine,” was all I said.
To actually answer your question, Lucien: she wasn’t planning on sparing you.  She used you and was ready to leave you.
Lucien is a bigger man than me because I would have probably yelled in her face.
Again, uses him to get revenge against Tamlin
Also when he asks her where he’ll fit in in the NC,she thinks about how she would only offer him the position to keep Elain from Spring and to get back at Tamlin.
Chapter 12: “And where, exactly, do you believe I will fit in?  The Night Court? I didn’t answer.  I didn’t have one, honestly.  As High Lady I could likely offer him a position, if we survived long enough to make it home.  I’d do it mostly to keep Elain from ever going to the Spring Court, but I had little doubt Lucien would be able to hold his own against my friends.  And some small, horrible part of me enjoyed the thought of taking one more thing away from Tamlin, something vital, something essential. “We should leave at down,” was my only reply.
Lucien is vital, but not because of his talents as an emissary and how he would benefit the Night Court.  It’s because Tamlin wouldn’t have an emissary.
Feyre just lies to him and assumes stuff and uses him…overall, she’s just such a selfish friend and I’m fairly sure that she doesn’t even consider Lucien her friend at this part, despite several things that would go against that.  Lucien seems to consider or had considered her a friend.
And then I got a part two because there’s just more things.
Being unwelcome when they get to Night
And now we are getting to one of my biggest gripes with Feyre.  When they get back to the Night Court she has the reunion with Rhys.  They almost immediately go off and have sex and sure, I get it: they’re mates, they haven’t seen each other in a while, they didn’t know if they would ever see each other again.  It’s very emotional.  But when they are done having sex, Feyre goes down and sees Lucien in the sitting room, still in his dirty clothes.  Feyre thinks about how she should offer him something…but then the thought vanishes as soon as Rhys steps to her side.
Chapter 15: “Lucien was waiting in the sitting room when Rhus and I came downstairs at last… I fought my cringe as I halted at the threshold.  Lucien was still in his travel-worn, filthy clothes.  His face and hands, at least, were clean, but…I should have gotten him something else.  Remembered to offer him— The thought rippled away into nothing as Rhys appeared at my side.
FEYRE.  You literally just finished fucking him and putting on your wedding rings, stop thinking of Rhys and offer your “friend” some clean clothes, a bath, SOMETHING!!!!  He has his face and hands washed probably because he washed them in the fucking kitchen sink because he doesn’t know where the bathroom is because no one has given him a tour and they still don’t give him a tour after this…
This is infuriating to me.  So infuriating.  It’s not only being a shitty friend but also a shitty hostess.
And then they have their talk where they explain everything to him, Lucien finally understands what has been going on, he knows that Rhys has been wearing a mask the whole time and that the NC is good…and then he is finally offered clothes and a bath.  By fucking Rhys too not by Feyre.
Chapter 16: “I assume you’ll need clothes,” Rhys went on, nodding toward Lucien’s filthy jacket and pants—which he’d worn for the past week while we scrambled through territories.  Indeed, that was…blood splattered in several spots.
Not communicating, having no important talks as friends or allies
And then the entire time Lucien is in Night, she does not try to have any meaningful talks besides the one where she and Rhys explain everything to him.  She often says it’s for another time.  But they never have any sort of conversation, even if it would just be beneficial as allies, if not friends.
There is a weird sort of mistrust for him. They not only don’t trust Lucien with Elain but also just information in general and this mistrust takes way too long to fade.  From a political standpoint, I get it: he is / was a close friend and courtier to Tamlin, they did ally with Hybern.    But Feyre acknowledges he was remorseful.  And when they’re in Spring he speaks up and tells Tamlin his mistrust and dislike towards allying with Hybern.  But Feyre just speaks over that.
And I just don’t understand this mistrust with Elain and assuming he’ll steal her away, which is what Rhys implies.
Chapter 19: “If he got Elain away, back to Spring or wherever…do you believe, deep down, that he wouldn’t sell what he knows?  Either for gain, or to ensure she stays safe?” I considered his question: Did I trust Lucien?  “I don’t know, either,” I admitted, and sighed.  “I don’t like that Elain is a pawn in this.” “Did he discuss what he feels regarding Tamlin?” “Non.  I didn’t want to push on that.  He was…remorseful about what happened with me, and Hybern, and Elain.  Would he have felt that way without Elain in the mix?  I don’t know—maybe.  I don’t think he would have left, though.”
But Lucien explained to Feyre that he hated how Elain was in an enemy’s hands and wanted to make sure she was okay and he knows now that the IC is good and she’s safe, but you still mistrust him?  You are just completely ignoring everything and thinking the worst of him, and as I said before, not offering him the same courtesy you want him to have for Rhys.
Also Elain is a pawn because you are making her a pawn.
Lucien has good intentions.  He wants to do good.    With Hybern, he has not only explains his dislike for allying with them before to her but he sneaks off and sent stuff to Nuan for research to find a preventative against faebane.   He goes to find Vassa to basically redeem himself, he says it was “about time he did something”.
And about Elain: Lucien is not demanding to see her.  He literally just sits around on his ass and waits and is courteous.  There’s no malicious intent.  He is so kind and respectful.  And if you are so mistrustful towards him that you set up rules for him to follow, maybe just ask him.  Ask permission to look in his mind maybe?
Feyre and Rhys and the IC have a set of morals that they follow sometimes but then choose not to follow when it conveniences them.  That is a whole other discussion in itself but literally so many things that went wrong with their friendship could have been solved if they actually talked and Feyre wanted to listen to him.
When Lucien and Elain finally talk one-on-one and Feyre goes into his mind (again, out of mistrust), Feyre discovers that Lucien has no ill intentions.  Lucien didn’t even mean to find Elain there in the library.  He just wanted a walk and to get a book, he didn’t realize she was there, he did not intentionally seek her out and break Feyre’s rule, despite what Rhys says.
Chapter 24 of ACOWAR: He hadn’t expected her to be here.  The other sister—the viper—was a possibility, but one he was willing to risk…he’s been cooped up in this wind-blasted House for two days. He just wanted a walk—and a few books.  It had been an age since he’d ever had free time to read, let alone do so for pleasure. But there she was. His mate.
Getting jealous he has friends / the entire fight they have in ACOFAS
Feyre seemed to have redeveloped her affection for Lucien by the end of ACOWAR but it took way too long and she is still an ass even after everything he’s done for her and for the good of Prythian.
In Frost and Starlight with their fight that causes him to leave before the Solstice…by fucking god.  I truly hate everything about this conversation.  Feyre is just so wildly frustrating.  I discussed it before so I feel like I don’t need to go a whole lot into it because I already ripped this scene apart word for word.
Chapter 18 of ACOFAS: I rose as well.  ‘But Jurian and Vassa’s is fine?’ ‘You’d be surprised to see how well the three of us get along.’ Friends, I realized.  They had somehow become his friends.  ‘So you would rather stay with them?’ ‘I’m not staying with them.  The manor is ours.’” ‘Interesting.’ His golden eye whirred.  ‘What is.’ Not feeling very festive at all, I said sharply, ‘That you now feel more comfortable with humans than with the High Fae.  If you ask me—‘ ‘I’m not.’ ‘It seems like you’ve decided to fall in with two people without their homes of their own as well.’”
Lucien talks about how he and Vassa and Jurian have been getting closer and Feyre gets almost jealous that he has found friends and a life outside of the Night Court and the Inner Circle.
Of course he wanted to find other friends besides you, Feyre.  It’s not like you have welcomed him with open arms.
And then this quote: “It seems like you’ve decided to fall in with two people without homes of their own as well.”
So you’re admitting that the Night Court isn’t his home?  That he’s not welcome here, he has no friends here?
And then she realizes she fucked up she tries to correct herself:
Chapter 18 of ACOFAS: “Lucien stared at me, long and hard.  ‘Happy Solstice to you, Feyre.’” He turned toward the foyer, but I grabbed his arm to halt him.  The corded muscle of his forearm shifted beneath the fine silk of the sapphire jacket, but he made no move to shake me off.  ‘I didn’t mean that.  You have a home here.  If you want it.’”
He doesn’t want it.  He talks about how he can’t go to Spring anymore not just to Tamlin but to the court outside of the manor because of how Feyre ripped down Spring.  Feyre shows no remorse for that.  And he also talks about how he can’t stand to be in Night around Elain.  He doesn’t feel welcome here for all of those reasons and from the fact that you are just the worst friend ever.
And then she proceeds to make fun of the Band of Exiles and mock him despite the work they are doing for the land she used to live in as a human.  The Band of Exiles is a stupid name but Feyre doesn’t have a right to call it bullshit.
They have not had any meaningful conversations about their friendship.  They could sit down and actually talk about what happened like civil people, I think they both have to still fully admit where they were wrong and apologize for the mistakes they’ve made.  But Lucien seems to have already apologized more than Feyre ever will.  He apologizes, he says Feyre was a better friend than he was, he feels guilty, he says he needs to actually do something and he looks for redemption.  In ACOWAR when he is still in the Night Court, he has better manners than Feyre does, he apologizes and says thank you so many times.
And their fight in ACOFAS is basically the last thing we got of their friendship because he does come to the solstice party in Silver Flames which I am amazed by actually.  I feel like he is still holding on to Elain and his allyship (I’m going to call it allyship) with Feyre and the Inner Circle.  After everything she’s done to him, he’s still pushing through it.  And I think that makes him a better person than Feyre.  Strong opinion but.  Jesus.
I could go for even longer but I’ll stop and I’ll end by saying Lucien deserves better.

amidst the waves: part II
Tumblr media
summary: born a lowborn, your family a group of fishermen that supply the market; one day, it wasn’t a fish caught but rather, a young man.
pairing: lucerys velaryon x fem!reader
part: I, II, III

"Are we there yet?"
It's been half an hour since you two left, and Luke has been struggling ever since. Groaning each step of the way, the two of you had to make multiple stops for him to not collapse.
"We're almost there," You reply tiredly, taking the bag of fish from him to let him breathe. "You shouldn't have come with me, gods." You sigh when you see him without the hood of his coat, wiping his sweat from his forehead, the brunette curls on his head seeping out from the bandage around his head.
"I'm quite sorry, but you were the one that told me to come. I was already acquainted with Arrel and Alaine," Luke rebuts, still polite in his tone. You look away apologetically, remembering that he did almost die in the sea, and now you made him walk with you to the market. Well, to be frank, it was your parents that told you to bring him.
Luke nods at you, taking back the bag you held and carrying it before you two go back to walking. The rest of the walk was silent with just a few small chats from Luke, asking you more about your family as you asked him the same.
Turns out, Luke still didn't remember anything. Not even his family members or his full name. He only knows himself as Luke.
You decide not to push him much on remembering about himself, seeing him also grow irritated at the loss of his own memories, at the fact that he can't even answer your questions.
You eventually arrived at the familiar crowded market, various people chattering and bargaining with one another. The foul smell of the raw meat hanging from hooks invades both of your noses. There wasn't anything new for you; however, your companion seemed new to the smell. You found him quite adorable, chuckling a bit at him pinching his nose while he wandered his gaze around the market with a fascinated expression.
"You haven't been to a market?" The man stared at you blankly. You were confused for a moment before remembering that he had just said he couldn't remember anything but the moments before and after his fall. "Sorry, don't answer that."
Luke chuckles lightly at you. "It's okay, my lady. I may have been to a market, but the memory is not quite vivid."
The way he called you 'my lady' with such a polite and upright tone made you break out in a small smile, looking away from the man. "He must be a highborn," you thought.
"Y/N's fine," You correct him and he nods, your name sounding better coming from his voice and tone, but you'd rather not dwell on it. He is, after all, just a stranger that needs help.
"Follow me." You pulled him by his arm, the man struggling to follow you as he squeezed himself between people, the big bag he carried causing him to occasionally bump into them, halting for a moment to actually apologize genuinely, the folks looking at him weirdly.
"Just ignore them. They likely won't care if you bump into them unless you make them drop something," you explained after the two of you stopped for him to apologize to a random person.
"But that wouldn't be mannerly.." he said.
"You're in a market full of peasants, Luke. Manners are the last thing you'll find here." Luke nods slowly, although weary since he's not used to the environment.
Upon arriving at a familiar cart, barrels containing various different meats on the outside of the cart, flies swarming the hung pig's leg, you notice Luke tapping his feet anxiously. His hood was off, his eyes turning to you and locking with yours before you turned back to the merchant behind the cart.
"Grahar."
"Y/N! My favorite fishies!" The chubby old man gleams at the sight of you, arms welcoming as you nod at Luke to give him the bag. He looks at you before handing it to Grahar. He looks at Luke weirdly before smiling like he usually does, happily taking the bag of fish and other sea creatures.
"The usual eh? You and your family always give me best quality! I put some extra here!" You chuckle at his thick accent, telling him "thank you" as he handed you a bag of coins, though before it could reach your wrist, he beckons you closer.
Your brows raised in surprise, glancing at Luke, who glared at Grahar before you leaned forward.
"Is he partner? You know," the man whispers at you, his fingers doing something not-so appropriate while he looks at your reaction. The sudden speculation made you shriek loudly.
"Seven hells, no, Grahar! He's just a friend!" You exclaimed loudly, Luke looking at the two of you weirdly, not catching up on the context as Grahar's laugh thundered loudly.
You playfully glared at the older merchant before taking the bag of coins, Luke staring down Grahar before following you out of the market.
"Ahh... At times like this, it makes me feel like a princess in the kingdom. Having endless coins to splurge on," you sigh contentedly, Luke peeking inside of the bag at the same time as you do.
"That's... a lot!" Luke marveled at the sight of the metal shining in the bright sun. "I never knew you wanted to be a princess," he adds, pushing back his hood.
"I don't. I never said I did, dimwit." You replied, picking up one silver stag and handing it to Luke. He looked at you confusedly, eyebrows arched as he glanced at the coin, then at you.
You urged him to take it. "Go on. It's yours."
"Thank you..." He says quietly, lips stretching into a warm smile.
"You're welcome. You're now one silver stag richer than 60% of the city." You make a lighthearted remark to him, and he laughs.
His fingers carefully picked up the coin from your hand, inspecting the small piece of metal as his eyes ran over the image of King Jaehaerys and a dragon on either side of the coin.
Luke's head started to hurt. His eyes started to blur while the back of his head started to ache in painful patterns.
Your eyes widen in concern, assisting Luke when he clutches his head upon stumbling a bit. You gripped his arm while leading him into an empty alleyway. "Are you okay? What's wrong?"
His chest gradually started heaving up and down. You started to become nervous about what was happening, so you pulled his hood down, cradling the back of his head with your arm. It wasn't bleeding, which is good. The blood on the bandage has already dried.
Luke's hands started to shake as well, the coin in his hand dropping as he stayed silent. While his body jerked and you tried to calm him down, you yourself were also scared.
You took the coin from the ground and held it in between his hands, enclosing his with yours. It took him a long minute to stop convulsing, almost having your own heart attack out of nervousness.
"I'm fine- yes, I'm okay..." He stammers quietly as his body starts to calm down as well, no longer shaking. You finally get to sigh out of relief, dropping to sit on the ground.
Luke stares at his hands, "Did Y/N just... hold my hands..." His cheeks started to burn up at the thought of it, licking his chapped lips and looking elsewhere.
"What happened to you?"
"I... don't know. I think I-"
"What are you two doing there?" The two of you turn to the armored man at the end of the alleyway. You jumped to your feet, arms behind your back, and began to make an excuse, but the armored man was standing beside you. He looked at Luke.
"He hit his head." You reply with a shaky voice.
Luke looks away, pulling the hood of his coat on while the guard moves, his heavy armor clanging. You thought he would ask more questions or even inspect the both of you, but he leaves. Not a word from him.
You snapped to glare at Luke, the man playing with the coin in his hand. "Goodness, I shouldn't have brought you with me," you sigh upon standing. You dusted off your bottoms and held Luke's arm as he stood up with you, placing the small coin in his pocket.
"I think we need to head back home."
Tumblr media
It's been more than four days since you first met Luke. Ever since that headache situation, he's never experienced it again. Or at least, as you thought. The first night, your parents already made him a small tent beside your family's hut, just enough for him to sleep in since he spends the day in the hut.
On his second day, Luke asked you to teach him how to fish. Finding it both boring and disrespectful to stay with your family and not help out. So you did. And he eventually got the hang of it, fishing with your father, sometimes with Arrel and Aliane and sometimes with you.
He no longer had a bandage around his head after the third day. He was already recovering well. Your father bought him his own clothes from a cheap merchant in the market, treating Luke as his "worker" as the man helped around the hut with fishing and bringing the family's gains to the market.
"There's one behind you, gods, Luke spear it!" You yell at him from the shore, the curly-haired man looking for fish in the waters that reached his calves. After some time, he sees it and swiftly impales it with the wooden spear he had.
Luke smiled widely at that, a sense of fulfillment coming over him as he takes the fish from the water and walks over to you.
"It was literally beside you, it took you so long to kill it," you scoff, Luke handing you the fish while you place it atop the clean wood, expertly descaling and cutting it.
"I believe I did fairly well for one that fishes at night," Luke counters, sitting on a small bench beside the bonfire with your siblings. You raised your eyebrow, glaring at him, making him laugh.
When you finished prepping the fish, you placed them in some clay plates that your parents extravagantly bought using the gold coins that the guards gave you. Your siblings and Luke mumbled their thanks as they started to eat. The four of you engage in random conversations about how the day went, with Luke asking about fishing stories every now and then.
"Clean up. Alaine, get some water for the fire. Arrel, bring the plates inside..." You started to list out while your siblings quickly scattered. You turned to Luke, the man looking at you expectantly. "What about me?"
"I don't know, help me with tidying up." You stood up, starting to arrange the littered sticks and leaves around the pit, and Luke did the same. The fire hissed as Luke poured the bucket of water Alaine bought, high-fiving your younger sister after.
Your brow furrowed, promptly feeling something wet hit your side. You slowly turned your head only to see Luke grinning at you with the leftover water from the bucket. He clearly didn't use it all to put out the fire.
He backs away cautiously when you start walking over to him after complaining, running away when he saw you running to the waters to fill a cup with water. You chased him around the shore, splashing the man with water whenever you got close. But Luke ran fast, really fast. And sadly, most of the water you threw in his direction fell to the sand.
When your cup ran out of water, it was his turn to run after you.
"Luke, Luke- No! You dimwit-" You struggled as it took no effort for Luke to reach you, pouring the water over your head as you yelled at him. Luke cackles at your reaction, your frail hands wrapped around his wrist as you try to stop him from emptying the bucket over your head. You hated it, of course, but it did make you laugh. Your complaint was a mix of yelling and laughing.
His laugh slowly dies down when he notices your hand wrapped around his again. "A shower, maybe?" Luke says, your hands withdrawing from his to arrange your hair.
You kick him in the leg, making him groan. "You are truly... a pain in my arse."
When you rolled your eyes, Luke simply chuckled again. He took off the thin coat he wore before giving it to you. "You can go inside, I'll finish up here." He says with a sly smirk, holding your shoulders and pushing you back to the front of the house.
"Do you know just how close I am to hitting you?"
"I don't. How uneducated of me," Luke retorts sarcastically, and you glare at him, standing by the door as he awaits you to go back inside. He started to pick up the small pieces of rubbish around the area, cleaning off the wooden stools and counter.
You yawned lowly, adjusting his coat around your shoulders before deciding to go back, wanting to dry your hair and help your siblings to bed.
"Good night then, Y/N!" Luke speaks as you head inside, standing by the open window to see him. You wave back, a small scoff leaving your mouth.
"Good night as well, Luke."
hearts, reactions, replies, and reblogs are very appreciated if you liked the story! <3 ^w^

The 306 Workshop Group in front of 306 West 141st St., late 1930s.
The 306 Workshop Group, also known as the Harlem Art Workshop, was founded by artist Charles Alston. This group served to bring together Black artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Augusta Savage, and Langston Hughes, just to name a few. Located at 306 West 141st Street in Harlem, the Harlem Art Workshop provided these artists with both a meeting and work space. In the 1920s, Harlem became a coveted address. The neighborhood in New York City was synonymous with an outpouring of production in the visual arts, music, literature, theater, and dance that some began referring to the creative era as the Harlem Renaissance.
Famous artists of the Harlem Renaissance included: sociologist and historian W.E.B. Du Bois, writers Claude McKay, Langton Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston, musician Duke Ellington, and entertainer Josephine Baker. These artists strove to express their racial identity and pride.
Jacob Lawrence, an artist of the Harlem Renaissance, believed his paintings were “a portrait of myself, a portrait of my community.” The community he grew up around included artist and mentor Charles Alston and leading philosopher Alain LeRoy Locke.
The people of Harlem and their rich heritage were constant sources of inspiration for Lawrence. The community experience—its triumphs and tragedies, its dreams and disappointments, its pleasures and humility, collectively forged by the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Depression era—lives on in his paintings.

Private devotional reliquary, Silver and blackened wood, Augsburg, circa 1740.
The reliquary in the form of a wardrobe houses a relic of the true Cross and another of the Virgin's veil. At the bottom, a drawer is decorated with two small removable candlesticks. On the reverse, a compartment with a lock contains documents attesting the authenticity of the relics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tumblr media
1. Who are the Romance Options for the series?
Hadrian — Bisexual
Alessa —  Bisexual
Alain —  Bisexual
Ysabella —  Bisexual
The Pirate King — Straight
Neia — Lesbian
Lance —  Bisexual
Rafael —  Bisexual
Lieutenant Vallen —  Bisexual
2. Need help with an achievement?
Check the amazing Achievement Guide made by Nell!
3. How many books will the series be?
Right now, I have 4 books planned!
4. How do I befriend the street urchin?
To gain Beka’s loyalty you must:
Stop her because you think she might be useful. To convince her to stay, pick the choice according to your stats. If you have at least 25 Wit, persuade her. 25 Influence, bribe her. 25 Combat, intimidate her.
Don’t press her too hard for answers, or she’ll refuse to talk further. In the end, when Beka offers to become your informer, you need to accept the deal, which means paying her. And when the guards come, you have to protect her.
That makes Beka loyal to you. To keep the guards from running after Beka, you have to play to your strengths once again.
If you have at least 30 combat — Stare the guard down.
30 Wit — Ask them what they think they’re doing.
30 Influence — Tell them she’s a retired thief.
30 Pious — Bring the Lord’s disapproving gaze upon them.
Now, even if you fail, at this point, Beka is already loyal to you. But this is how you make sure she’s safe. At least, safe for the morning.
5. Where can I find the Goliath?
Visit the Harbor and check the fighting pit when you hear all the commotion coming from it. You'll see the Goliath at the center of an ancient amphitheater, waiting for his next opponent.
6. How do I beat the Goliath?
Here and here.
7. Is the scar unavoidable?
It is.
8. What are the ROs' ages?
Rafael — mid-twenties
Alain and Ysabella — mid-twenties
Hadrian — mid to late twenties
Alessa — mid to late twenties
Lance — late twenties
Neia — early thirties
The Pirate King — early thirties
9. Can I visit all five locations in one playthrough?
You can't. You can either visit three or four in one playthrough.
10. How can I listen to Lance's song?
You need to go outside of the inn at the end of Chapter 6.
11. Why can't I save the game?
If you mean save while you're playing, I don't know how to code it. Unfortunately, Choicescript doesn't have a save feature. If you play on Steam, here is a save plugin you can use similar to Dashingdon!
If you mean save your progress at the end of the game, so to carry your choices for the sequel, it isn't yet implemented! Hosted Games will add that feature once I'm 80% done with writing Book 2. So, I will let you know when the save option is added!
12. Will romancing Alessa or Hadrian lock me out of the other ROs routes?
It will not. There’s not romance “locks” in the game.
13. Why is it called 'The Golden Rose'?
The reason why will be revealed at a later installment.
14. How do I meet the Pirate King?
Go to the Harbor.
15. Can I switch Billy for another horse?
Not in the first book.
16. Will I see the cat again? What about Beka?
You will see them both again!
17. Will I see Garrett again?
You will! When and where depends on the choices you've made and the paths you've set him on. But as long as you haven't killed the young, failed bandit, you'll get to see Garrett again.
18. Can I still romance Hadrian if I killed Garrett?
You can! Although the romance progresses in a much different way.
But, for Hadrian not to completely shut you off (both romantically and as a friend), you have to show remorse right after killing Garrett. That means you can’t pick the option that uses sarcasm to mask your distress either — because Hadrian believes your lie — you need to show clear remorse. Immediate guilt.
On your first night at the inn, you need to try and talk to him and be as calm as possible. After that, just… well, keep trying. Hadrian will push back, which can make it hard for you not to say “well, I’m done.” And you can totally do so, but if you want a chance at reconciliation, I’m afraid you’ll have to swallow a lot of stones.
19. Can I romance Alessa if I threaten her at the tomb?
You cannot.
20. How do I get Corruption points?
You get Corruption points by:
Killing Garrett.
Killing the Devil’s Guardian.
Killing the man at the Cathedral.
Killing the man who punches you at the Nestled Nook Inn.
If you gain enough Corruption, your mark grows by the end of the book. And yes, it will have future consequences — outwardly, but, most importantly, inwardly too.
21. Can you give me a physical description of all the ROs?
Here.
22. What are the highest and lowest attainable relationship descriptors in Book One?
Here.
23. Who's your favorite character to write?
Romanus!
24. Wait, there's a siren?
Go to the Market and follow the voice of a boisterous showman.
25. What's the Church's stance on homosexual relationships? What about women in general?
Here.
26. Is the game set in Spain?
Please check out: One | Two | Three | Four
27. Can you write a scenario or an RO reaction?
I might post a snippet once in a while, when inspiration strikes me but, as a rule, I don't write scenarios or reactions any longer. When I used to do them, I was a student and had much more free time than I have today.
Whatever time I have for writing, I invest it in Patreon content and, most importantly, in writing Book Two! Because, at the end of the day, that's what we're all here for.
All the lovely asks are very appreciated, but I'm afraid you will be disappointed if you send me a scenario request.
28. Will we be able to...
I'm not a fan of spoilers! I might answer some of these, but, just to warn you, I most likely won't. Some things one must wait to see.
29. Are you Brazilian?
No, I’m Portuguese.
And, lastly, here is the Tag page on my blog. All the important tags are listed there. Feel free to explore it!

Alain Kumar's Protectiveness
Content Warnings: Yandere, descriptions of implied drug/substance abuse (not towards reader)
Note: 1/5 boys, they'll all get a little headcanon focusing on their main trait! Isa's is also done so I'll post that after this.
Tumblr media
Alain wants you to consider him as the Only marriageable option out of everyone, and he'll do anything to stay in your good graces
He's learnt how to cook several recipes from various cultures, all the cleaning hacks, sewing and more. If you have a uterus he's learnt all the necessary biology facts and period care tips to provide maximum comfort; he's even first-aid certified! Truly, a perfect husband... right? Right??
Alain is also extremely protective down to his core, and firmly believes that a good husband would never let his spouse (to-be) get in the way of harm, ever. While not as manipulative as Haneul, Alain has a few tricks up his sleeve to deter anyone he sees as a potential threat to your safety. Not your relationship, no, he trusts you too much for that. Besides, he doubts that anyone would try something once he puts a ring on your finger!
Alain is a great cook, and has quite an extensive knowledge of chemicals from his brief period of time taking a toxicology degree (he's still taking it part-time alongside his idol career), and knows how to use that knowledge and put it to good use.
He would never drug you, no! But he doesn't mind drugging the guy who attempted to invite you for drinks, or the girl who suggested you pick up smoking. Those are such awful substances! Why would they even try to put your health at risk?? Nothing like too much benadryl mixed in that colleague's beer or laced on that other coworker's cigarette to put them into an overdose~
If he could, Alain would also demand that you stay away from any flammable, sharp or poisonous object or substance, but alas, he knows that you, as an assistant manager will have to interact with such things every now and then. Haneul is also against Alain bubble-wrapping you, much to his dismay
Alain's also been saving up for a pretty cushy penthouse in the inner city, the perfect place for both of you to live out your lives, and he's planning to get a risk assessment done to make sure everything is 100% (or as close to it as possible) free from any risks that could hurt you
General advice is to make sure to hide any papercuts or accidental injuries from Alain, because the man is one slip and fall away to deciding that you need to be locked up and monitored for your own good.
