UNHINGED ANON HOUR I have the perfect story hehe. a couple years ago I was on twitter (yeah ik, it was quarantine and I was bored) in a specific fandom that was fairly small (literally maybe 100-200 people) but within the course of a few months exploded in size. I was around 19 at the time, one of my close mutuals on there was 18. he was rather popular in the fandom (like 5k followers iirc?) for being physically attractive-- in retrospect this specific fandom was like. weirdly focused on selfie days and physical attractiveness. but anyways

one day I woke up finding out I'd been cancelled. like, a full google doc callout, dozens of dms asking me if "it" was true and accusing me of "enabling a pedophile".

after a few minutes of panic and trying to figure out what was going on.... it turned out that my mutual, who was 18, had been e-flirting with two girls, both of which were 17. the girls had gotten together and somehow figured out that he had been casually flirting with them both, got upset because they both thought they were special, and made a callout doc accusing him of being a pedophile (which linked the wikipedia page for grooming). for a 1 year age gap. i promise you this is genuinely what happened, there isn't any weird context or other relevant drama im leaving out, it was literally because he was 18 and they were 17 that he was sent death threats for being a groomer aksksjsjs on the bright side it got me to deactivate twitter which has been an amazing decision

but obviously in retrospect that one year age gap was so problematic like >_< ajksjdjksksk

what the FUCK. internet culture can be genuinely scary sometimes.

you are the sonic mutual, and i am actually so curious… what is it like to be a fan of the sonic franchise... you like various shows and games and movies, is there something to it like there is to vocaloid? where you're sort of in love with all this various content about sonic, though it's all different, to the point that the trends he carries in most iterations are enough to cause a positive reaction? though it's got to be different because vocaloids 99% of the time don't have any lore or canonical writing of them at all. do you think it's because the canon is so loose and variable that there is so much passion for fan works as their own thing too? (you don't have to answer this of course, you don't owe answers to this pile of questions, you're just like THE sonic person i know.)

i cant speak for every sonic fan out there, but to me personally, the character of sonic is what initially made him so appealing to me when i first started getting into the franchise. i actually started w the cartoons before getting into the games bc they were more easily accessible to me when i was rly young (youtube was free and i was more of a mario kid at first). and the cartoons rly are an odd place to start now that i think abt it bc theyre all SO different from both each other and the games AKSKSKS

but one thing abt every piece of sonic media that always draws me to it is, ofc, sonic himself--as well as all the other characters he gets to interact with, whether theyre from the games or were made specifically for a piece of spinoff material. at the core of it, sonic has always been whats kept me coming back. i just always thought he was a cool and interesting character and i like seeing him in different worlds/situations. even if hes portrayed slightly differently from media to media, there are very few pieces of sonic media out there where i will look at their portrayal of sonic and go "thats not him." hes just so recognizable and familiar to me despite the differences between the many different versions of him.

sonic is one of if not THE biggest comfort character of mine, and even if hes slightly different depending on the media u consume, there are still core character traits of his that resonate w me and are the reasons why i love him in the first place. so to me, even tho there are so many different kinds of sonic content out there, the appeal of sonic as a character as well as his interactions w others are what keeps me invested and brings me joy. he just makes me happy and thats why i like his franchise so much :)
