Take lanes can be renamed in the same way as tracks, using the Rename command in the Edit menu or a take lane header’s right-click(Win) / CTRL-click(Mac) context menu, or using the CTRL-R(Win)/ CMD-R(Mac) keyboard shortcut. This guide will show you how to make sure that your M-Track is set up. You can also move take lanes using the CTRL(Win) / CMD(Mac) modifier with the up or down arrow key. Of late, I have been spending time working at my home. Or, more accurately, the rudimentary recording studio/office space I am trying to turn it into.
I have acquired some... crude paraphernalia to allow me to develop this humble abode into a de facto, barebones production hub. After the expropriation of some very, very expensive, very, very rare equipment, I arrived at a decision that could only be resolved in two ways.
I could spend time uselessly lamenting my missing pieces, lambasting those responsible, and laying waste to myself.
Alternatively, I could interpret it as a fresh start. A clean slate. A sort of conscription to that new, minimalist lifestyle trend that's no longer new, nor particularly trendy.
So I am piecing together what I can from what I have left, and building anew.
I have taken the opportunity to obligate better, learned men than myself on the most effective routes forward.
I have always left the nitty gritty and minutiae to more capable hands, concerning myself with more primitive means of expression,
Acquainting myself with a new Digital Audio Workstation, some new hardware, and an unfamiliar instrument (I am finding brave new ways to put some spook on things) has been a challenge, but I will endeavour to document it on this platform, so that I might refer to it when I predictably forget everything I've learned the moment I lay my head down to sleep.
Things like Reaper, Ableton Live, and even the most simple of synths, or even the use of a basic rhythm machine have forever seemed beyond these clumsy, primal paws. My 7ARDOOM brethren, Kathal Larkin, has been guiding me through the finer points of all of this terrifying, unfamiliar technology I find myself festooned with.
When it comes to the physical side of engineering, and indeed, even information as simple as exactly what bits and pieces I might need to make even basic demonstrations, I too am stumbling blindly in the dark. My long-suffering brother in Gloom, Fionntán Mac Cába, has been lending me his technical knowhow, as well as half of my current guitar effects collection.
I am devastatingly close to realizing a live/recording synthesizer setup, something I've been toying with the idea of for just shy of a year at the time of writing.
Having admired groups like No Spill Blood, Neurosis and Battles, as well as composers like Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm and Yosi Horikawa, the possibilities of seeing how I can make strange, sad sounds with almost infinite textural complexity is giddying. It might not exactly be a Moog One, but it will be more than enough to serve the work I have been doing for Two Heavens.
Progress, however incremental, is yet progress.

"Restructured" Track Diary
For an assignment a part of the unit of study “MUSC2653 Introduction to Digital Music Techniques”, we were put on the path to creating a new piece of music that followed a similar song structure to Paul Mac’s track titled “Cataplexy”, released in 2019. After viewing our instructor’s teaching materials which outline the structure of this piece, there are only three main sections including an introduction and an outro.
I began creating this track by working with the restrictions put before me. These restrictions included having to deliver a three-minute piece of work which consisted of an introduction, A section, B section and once again an A section followed by some form of an ending. Here is how my Ableton Live session looked in the beginning
Tumblr media
I then decided to work on an interesting introduction that had some form of chaotic energy so as to contrast with the A section which I wanted to revolve around a repetitive bassline that carried the piece. Firstly, I connected an instrument lead (¼ Inch cable) to my Focusrite Audio Interface and increased and decreased the gain to distort this signal. I then grounded the cable by holding my thumb over it and then moved my hand across my laptop. This would have some form of effect where my laptop interrupted the signal. I took this recording and placed an auto-pan effect on it which would begin to increase in rate over time to indicate a climactic moment ahead. I then coloured it with some reverb as well to add ambience along with a frequency shifter which followed a similar automation curve as indicated below with the auto-pan automation picture below.
Tumblr media
I also added some synth to accompany this piece of audio in the introduction that slowly increased in volume.
Tumblr media
After having my intro down I decided to work on the bassline. I wanted it to have some solid presence within this track so I decided to include an Octave pedal on the bass with the octave above. After working on some basslines, I had one in mind ready to record properly after I recorded some drums. After having recorded some acoustic drums I then recorded the bass on top and then I began to have the solid backdrop for what this track would become.
Tumblr media
I already had in mind what the B Section breakdown was going to sound like. I decided to use a similar effect that Paul Mac used in “Cataplexy”. Instead of having at least one instrument remain in the foreground for this section, I used a filter on the master channel which I automated to slowly sweep from the High-frequency bands all the way to the low-frequency bands. I also wanted to make the drums sound as if they were glitching or skipping on a vinyl record so I chopped them up slightly and duplicated all the way until the main drum beat resumed.
Here is how the drums looked in the B Section of the session. You’ll notice there was some artifact at the beginning of the audio recording. I copied the main transient hit of the first beat of a bar and then placed that directly before beat 1 which created a flamming effect. This accentuated the skipping effect.
Tumblr media
I then began adding some Synth parts to fill out more areas of the mix to create ambience and also to have some harmony to support the bassline. I added some chords that had 7ths in them purely because I like using Major and Minor 7th’s. I then added a Synth part which contained some form of a melody so as have the basic roles of a song fulfilled. That being rhythm supplied by the drums and bass, harmony is supplied by the synths and the guitar parts (to be added later) and melody is supplied by a lead synth part. Then, to fill out more of the mix and to work in that “layer-cake” fashion I decided to include an airy-synth part that I sent through a large reverb effect and sent more towards the left of the mix to not keep the centre too busy.
Tumblr media
The next parts to follow were some guitar parts. I wanted the first guitar part to perform a harmonic role similar to the synth but in the form of an instrument with a different timbre. I then recorded some electric guitar that had some flanger, reverb and delay and put that towards the right side of the stereo image to also reduce how busy the centre of the mix already was. I then recorded some acoustic guitar to add a new element to the B Section.
Tumblr media
Then came the issue of mixing all these elements together. I sent some parts earlier to the left and right sides of the mix to lessen the muddy nature of the centre. I went through and EQ’d each element as well. I paid most of my attention to the drums in terms of EQ followed by some compression to glue each individual channel together so as to sound like one unified instrument. I added some reverb to give the drums some presence as well. After some automation and adjustment of levels, I included an EQ to increase some of the high-end after some advice from a class in which we reviewed our work. The following link will take you to my work.

How A Real Musician Uses The Logic Pro Digital Audio Workstation
Tumblr media
Introduction
The Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) has transformed the process by which musicians and producers create sound recordings. Since the first DAW was invented by Micro Technology Unlimited in 1979, the features available to the sound recordist have exploded over time. This has been fuelled by the growth in raw computer power available, along with an ever-increasing array of digital music- and sound-related hardware and software accessories, all with ever decreasing costs.
Systems like Ableton, Pro Tools, Cubase and Logic Pro offer a bewildering array of possibilities for making sound recordings. While all DAWs are based on the traditional analogue recording studio desk model of channels, sliders and plug-ins, they now offer a flexibility far beyond what was possible with a traditional analogue mixing desk.
Given the flexibility available now to musicians ranging from the home recording enthusiast to the serious professional, there are a great many tutorials on sites such as YouTube and LinkedIn Learning describing the mindboggling number of features that modern DAWs offer and how to use them. However, this raises the question:
How do working professional musicians actually use these tools?
And also:
How is the work of making a recording shaped by the tools used to make it?
This is a case study of how Jacob Collier, a relatively young but increasingly successful professional musician, uses the features of Logic Pro in the creation of his sound recordings.
The Artist: Jacob Collier
Jacob Collier is a 25-year-old musical creative genius based in London, who won two Grammy Awards in January 2020 for his arrangements of Moon River and All Night Long. An obscenely talented multi-instrumentalist known for his microtonal vocal harmonies, he uses digital recording technology from his home-based studio extensively in his work. He has also published several videos on his YouTube channel breaking down his use of Logic Pro in detail, which makes him an ideal candidate for this case study.
The Tool: Logic Pro
Logic Pro began life as a music sequencer named Creator from German company Emagic. In 1992 it evolved into Notator which ran on Atari, Macintosh and Windows computers. It was subsequently renamed Emagic Logic, acquired by Apple in 2002 and rebranded Logic Pro.
Apple dropped support for platforms other than macOS while continuing to develop Logic Pro. In October 2017, it was voted the second most popular DAW behind Ableton Live and ahead of Pro Tools and Cubase. The latest release, Logic Pro X version 10.5.1, is promoted online by Apple with the headline “Ridiculously powerful. Seriously creative.”
Jacob runs Logic Pro on a Mac computer with 128 Gb of RAM, a MIDI keyboard, condenser microphone and various electronic musical instruments connected via USB audio interface.
Moon River
Jacob’s Grammy Award-winning arrangement of Moon River by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer is a great example of his non-linear creative approach facilitated by Logic Pro. He utilises the platform’s flexibility to develop creative ideas in a much more fluid manner than a traditional recording session, and collaborates online with large numbers of other musicians and creative artists.
youtube
Here is the Logic session breakdown:
youtube
This recording begins with a collage of famous musician friends such as Chris Martin, David Crosby, Kimbra, and even his mum, who he asked to video themselves on their smartphones singing the word “Moon” to any of the diatonic notes in the key of B♭ major. He used the external audio editor RX to remove background noise from the audio track within each video and imported the resulting 151 “Moons” into the Logic Pro session.
He created audio tracks arranged by frequency from low to high, grouped into folders for each of the diatonic notes in the key, and placed several audio samples onto each track using the Equalisation plugin to match the sounds of the various different sources. Audio samples were displaced along the timeline to create harmonies using different chords from B♭ major. To complete the ethereal sound collage, he applied reverb using the Altiverb reverb plugin set to Notre Dame in homage to the famous cathedral destroyed by fire on the day he collected the tracks.
The recording continues with his acapella arrangement of the song proper, constructed over a week from the music room in his house by rapidly recording hundreds of short improvised vocal clips in multiple takes. The tracks containing these clips are grouped into busses for common effect processing, including equalisation and octave-shifting for the bass tracks.
Jacob uses a MIDI keyboard triggering the Vintage Electric Piano software instrument to plan some of his harmonisations before singing them, while others are entirely improvised. Microtonal elements are introduced by adjusting the tuning of the instrument up 50 cents via its control panel to produce the key D-half-sharp, and then incorporated into the vocals. He sings with just intonation to avoid the dissonant compromises of equal temperament, aided by the Kontakt virtual instrument plugin’s Dynamic Pure Tuning option.
Many of the vocal parts are multi-tracked by recording the same vocal sound multiple times on different tracks to create “that family feeling of the hug you feel when many people are singing at once”. Notes are combined into chords by placing them vertically adjacent to each other in the Logic Pro main editor window. Each track is panned to position these notes to the left, centre or right in varying degrees, giving a feeling of being surrounded by and immersed in the soundscape. Rapid experimental recording, playback and re-recording is a fundamental part of Jacob’s creative process, facilitated by the ability to rapidly rewind, replay and record in the DAW.
One of his favourite techniques is what Jacob calls “Pyramiding”, which is essentially arpeggiating the introduction of each note in a chord by staggering the recording of each vocal sample contributing to it. These are used for decoration throughout the piece, often multi-tracked. Subtle breathing noises were added to fill every gap in the sound. Background motifs from other songs on the same album and other “Easter eggs” are also incorporated.
He recorded the song without a click track or metronome, to make the work flow freely, and used the repeat function to copy and expand individual notes when he wanted to add extra time to them. In the final chorus, Jacob introduces a microtonal direct key change into the key of B-half-flat to give the finale of the song a lift.
Increasing numbers of tracks were added as the song progresses towards its climax. The final arrangement involved over 600 tracks, for which he was grateful to Apple who only recently increased the limit from 255 to 1000. Mixing involved extensive use of automation to adjust the volume of each track dynamically in the final mix.
All Night Long
Jacob’s arrangement of Lionel Richie’s All Night Long also won a Grammy Award, and was “Arranged, orchestrated, recorded, mixed, produced by Jacob in Logic Pro X.” As with Moon River, the creative workflow was highly non-linear, taking full advantage of the flexibility offered by the platform.
youtube
Here is the Logic session breakdown:
youtube
He developed the orchestral arrangement in 6 hours by playing software instruments on his MIDI keyboard. The resulting score was then exported from Logic Pro, imported into Finale music notation software, played by the live orchestra, recorded as audio files and used to replace the software instruments. He applied no processing to the orchestral recording other than mixing levels, to maintain as faithful a sound as possible.
The vocal parts were notated in Sibelius music notation software and sent to the members of the featured artist, acapella group Take 6. They recorded their parts and sent the audio files back to Jacob, who combined them in the Logic Pro session.
Brazilian samba rhythms inspired the percussion in the introduction, which was recorded in a separate Logic Pro session with Jacob sequentially playing various instruments in his music room. The percussion session had 293 tracks which were bounced down to four audio tracks for inclusion in the main Logic Pro session.
The first sound in the song is a chord consisting of 19 separate samples grouped together in a track folder and pitch-shifted down 1½ semitones with the Pitch Shifter plugin. He then bounced this down into a single sample, reversed it and shifted it back up 4½ semitones for use elsewhere in the piece.
Jacob used the Keyscape keyboard sample library, consisting of samples of a vast array of popular keyboards, to include the mechanical sounds of the Rhodes LA Custom organ. He also included electric guitar and bass parts played by himself on real instruments connected directly to his USB audio interface.
Ben Bloomberg engineered the orchestral recordings and helped Jacob mix the orchestral tracks. Room microphones captured the whole room, while each instrument also had its own microphone. This allowed muting and tuning adjustments for individual instruments on the rare occasion that they were out of tune.
Other inclusions to the soundscape include an “Oh!” exclamation by Herbie Hancock recorded during a session 3 years prior, the sound of light rain to make the song breathe during the lyrics “feel it in your soul”, a Theremin, cathedral organ, choir sounds, vocal utterances, scatting, party sounds, and the motif common to all songs on the album. Each of these was captured with a microphone and included on the audio tracks in Logic Pro.
At a previous gig, Jacob had asked the audience to perform and make recordings on their phones of a “stomp clap” and submit them to him via social media. He took the samples and used a separate Logic Pro session to create a “JC stomp clap” battery for the Battery drum sampling plugin, triggered via keys on the MIDI keyboard.
As with Moon River, each track uses extensive volume automation set during mixing. Mastering is performed using the Ozone mastering plugin on the Stereo Out channel and automating the compression parameter to dynamically adjust the dynamic range of each part of the song.
Sleeping On My Dreams
This song was recorded at 108bpm and then sped up to 111bpm to give it more energy. They even shot the music video at the slower speed and sped it up. Here it is:
youtube
Here is the Logic session breakdown:

Jacob describes his creative philosophy as: Don’t think about it; just do it and see if it works. If it doesn’t, change it.
He listens to pop music that he likes and tries to imitate it. There is no rule book.
He believes in himself.
He played his Grammy in the track.

Conclusion
Jacob Collier is an example of a working musician who uses many features of Logic Pro extensively in his creative workflow. His non-linear use of the platform, huge numbers of tracks, simultaneous application of a diverse set of plugins with a wide variety of settings, and extensive use of multi-tracking and automation allow the creation of recordings that would otherwise be impractical, or even impossible, without the aid of a digital audio workstation.

MULAB RECORD VOCALS INSTALL
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PRO
MULAB RECORD VOCALS SOFTWARE
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PC
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PROFESSIONAL
Of the free DAWs which aren’t produced by ’the majors’, Audacity is well worth a mention.
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PC
Finally, from the traditional DAW companies comes Presonus’ Studio One Prime. This Mac and PC DAW comes with unlimited tracks but limited instruments and is an excellent taste of a DAW that many producers are moving over to.
MULAB RECORD VOCALS SOFTWARE
This will allow you to experience why so many artists favour the Mac and PC software but is again limited to eight instrument and 16 audio tracks. Of the other big names in music production, Steinberg weighs in with its own freeware DAW, Cubase LE9. Mac owners, of course, already have a bit of a beast built-in in the form of Garageband which will run its own instruments and any AU format freeware. The most fully-featured free DAW option for PC owners is Cakewalk by BandLab (previously known as SONAR) The sequencer is now completely free and it comes with its own bundle of instruments and effects and will also run the VST3 freeware we discuss here. As the majority of freeware we will cover here is in the VST and AU format, you might find it limiting in your free music making efforts. It is limited to 16 tracks and will only load in AAX format freeware plug-ins.
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PRO
If you want to take a glimpse into the world of Pro Tools then Avid’s Pro Tools First will give you just that. You can make complete tunes with it but are limited to eight audio and MIDI tracks. Next up is A bleton Live Lite which gives you an excellent intro to Ableton’s slightly different, but incredibly popular take on DAW music making. It’s a grown-up DAW for silly money.” The best news is that its previous incarnation, T7, is now available as freeware for all desktop formats and you’ll find it a great option to host all of the freeware instruments we’ll discuss on these pages. When we reviewed it, we concluded that ”It comes with enough features to warrant a price tag at least twice what it is and integrates within your environment – be that Mac, PC or Linux – with ease. The latest version, Waveform, will cost you anything between $109 and $259 depending on the bundle of plug-ins you choose to have with it. Tracktion is a great sequencer for Mac, PC and Linux. Others, as we have hinted at, might simply be older versions of a currently available DAW. OK, some of these are cut-down versions of the big thing, but they do work and will let you produce a complete piece of music for no outlay whatsoever. A fully-blown, all-singing, all-dancing DAW can cost up to around £600 or more, but, believe it or not, you can get a fully-functioning sequencer for nothing. So, first things first, you will need a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to make music with and one that can host all of the freeware we will discuss later. We are, of course, assuming you have a Mac, PC or iOS device, but now that expense is out the way, keep your wallet in your pocket and your money in the bank… Freeware DAWs So however you make music, whether it’s in the studio or on the road, we’ll show you how you can start from scratch or expand on your current music making set-up for no outlay. We’ll also look at the freeware world of iOS music making as there are plenty of free (or ridiculously cheap) ways of making music on your iPhone or iPad. We’re not limiting our free music making to the desktop/studio world, though.
MULAB RECORD VOCALS INSTALL
We’ll even reveal some free DAWs with which you can install and use all of the freeware we discuss, so you don’t even have to shell out on what can be the most costly part of music making. We’ll also detail a complete effects rack for your free virtual studio, so that once your free music production starts, you can mix and master the results to perfection. It still works, but on a smaller scale.įor this feature we’re going to reveal the best free software for desktop music production within several different musical genres.
MULAB RECORD VOCALS PROFESSIONAL
Larger developers who make professional titles – think Native Instruments, u-he and many more – also have freeware and release it as a cut-down version of a paid-for product. Some of these do it for fun, and others have paid-for titles that they sell alongside their freewares. They are usually produced by a thriving community of developers who are keen musicians and experienced software producers. So what exactly is freeware? With desktop music production, it refers to complete pieces of software without restrictions you usually find on demo software. And they are getting better and better, often sounding as good as paid-for products. There are literally thousands of free music making apps and ’freeware’ software titles out there, for Mac, PC and mobile devices. They say the best things in life are free, right? Well, that applies to music production as well.

#Loopback device for mac#
There is no mechanism to change the sampling rate in Garageband, but in doing this project I discovered (and demonstrate) that I could receive and record audio from a 48k Jacktrip session even though Garageband only runs at 44.1k. Variation 4: Capturing audio in a DAW (Garageband) – Click here for video Variation 3: Capturing audio in a DAW (Max) – Click here for video But be careful to launch Live and confirm settings before launching the Jacktrip session – Live may be configured wrong when it launches and take down Jacktrip Variation 2: Capturing audio in a DAW (Ableton Live) – Click here for videoĪll the audio settings are set globally in Live. Launching a mismatched project will crash the Jacktrip session, possibly for everybody. The one that causes trouble is the Sample Rate, which is set at the project level and is quite often different than the sample rate being used by Jacktrip. The quirk of Logic is that it sets audio preferences in two places. Variation 1: Capturing audio in a DAW (Logic Pro) – Click here for video A device that can route 2 channels of Jacktrip in and out. Step 6: Route local audio out to Jacktrip – Click here for video Start by launching a Jacktrip connection and routing the incoming Jacktrip audio (just to the interface at first, more apps in later examples). Step 5: Route incoming Jacktrip audio – Click here for video Those other devices can be turned back on once this one is selected and saved as a QJackCtl preset. People who are already using Loopback and have a lot of devices may have to turn all but the new one off momentarily so that QJackCtl can find this one. QJackCtl has two buttons that can be used to select the interface - use the rightmost one, with the carrot that looks like this “>” Start QJackCtl at this point and make sure that it works as an interface. Step 4: Link to QJackCtl – Click here for video I’ve gotten into using really goofy names so that I don’t confuse myself when picking this device out of a list. This is also a good place to rename the device. Step 3: Clear out default routings – Click here for videoĪll of the sources and destinations are in place, but there isn’t any routing. Adding things later will sometimes cause Loopback to “rewire” the whole setup. Loopback makes guesses about the routing, which are fine but those guesses won’t work for what we’re doing. It’s good to make a list of sources and destinations for audio and add them all at once. Step 2: Add components – Click here for video This is just like a 2-channel Soundflower or Blackhole device – apps can send 2 channels to this gizmo, and other apps can listen to those two channels. Step 1: Starting out – Click here for videoĬreate a new Loopback device. Step 0: Assumptions – Click here for video Click on the pictures to embiggify and read them. There are links to short videos that “animate” each of these steps and examples.
#Loopback device how to#
I don’t have a clue how to do this on a Windows machine.

It also covers things like routing audio into and out of other audio software like Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Max and Zoom.Īlas, this is for Mac folks only. The goal of this post is to get a person with a 2×2 interface going with a setup that will let them join a Jacktrip session reliably, without having to “rewire” things each time. I like it because it is more visual and does more stuff. Loopback is a for-money successor to Soundflower and similar to BlackHole. Here’s a step-by-step post about routing Jacktrip audio using Rogue Amoeba’s Loopback software.

So exporting your project using the built-in export feature may not offer sufficient resolution for what you intend to do with the output.Įxport quality though is only part of the picture, and in many cases is not even the biggest obstacle. The previous version of GarageBand, GarageBand ’11, however lacks the 24-bit option. These last two are intended for publishing in either CD quality (16-bit) or “mastering quality (24-bit), the later being what you use when you need the final mix in the highest resolution. The current version of GarageBand, GarageBand 10, provides good flexibility as you can export to an MP3, an AAC file, or either 16-bit or 24-bit AIFF files. This, however, is intended as a way of "publishing" your final, “mixed down” project. GarageBand only offers the "Export song to disk." command under the Share menu.

To move this project into something like Pro Tools you need to get a best resolution audio file for each of the eight tracks. Suppose your GarageBand project has eight tracks (guitar, vocal, bass, etc.). There are some official standards for this sort of thing, like OMF, but exporting essentially means creating a maximum resolution audio file for each part (a GarageBand track) and then bringing all of those audio files into a different DAW project. So what does it exactly mean to "export a project"? The answer depends somewhat on where the project originated (here it would be GarageBand) and where it is headed. Your only "official" options are to move a project to Logic, or spend the time to "share" each of your individual project parts one by one, a very time consuming (and boring!) process. Some can even do this with one simple action. The full-featured (and much more expensive) DAWs have elaborate "export" facilities that make it much easier to move a project from one DAW to another. If you save your project tracks as individual audio files, you enhance the chance that you will be able to access that project in the future, even if a future version of GarageBand no longer reads the original project file (or you no longer have access to GarageBand). Audio files are a kind of common denominator for all DAWs and audio software. You prefer GarageBand but another member uses Pro Tools, on a PC! How can you share your work?Īnd here’s a final situation that you may want to adopt as the last step in any project: saving your tracks as a “future proof” project archive. You and your band mates are working on a new project. Getting your project out of GarageBand and into another "digital audio workstation" (DAW) is time consuming and error prone.Īnother example: collaboration. But when it comes time to do a final mix, or add that final production polish, some users prefer using a different tool, such as Cubase, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, or perhaps Ableton Live. GarageBand is a very efficient way to get musical ideas down fast, before your inspiration wanes. Here's an example of why this might be useful. Unfortunately GarageBand does not make this easy, unless you intend to continue the work in either Logic Express, Logic Pro 9, or Logic Pro X.

There are times, however, when you want to move a project that begins life in GarageBand into another music software application.
#Convert garageband to mp3 mac#
And now that GarageBand is available as an iOS app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch you have the option to start a project while “on the go”, then through the magic of iCloud, continue working on it on your Mac once you are back in the studio. For many users it is the only tool needed to record, edit, and publish music. The Apple GarageBand application program is a wonderful, and complete, music production environment.

REFURBISHED MAC PRO COMPUTER PROFESSIONAL
I’m currently producing an album, making the soundtrack for a corporate online piece and finishing a library album of my own. My key demand from my computers is that they have to not fall over on the job. I’ve done corporate jobs that are inevitably sample heavy, and mixed some very large (80 + track) projects. I’ve recorded everything from tracking sessions with singers to whole band setups (and everything in between) in here. I have a studio in SW London (from which I write this) - a control room and a live room overstuffed with instruments, mics, outboard etc.
REFURBISHED MAC PRO COMPUTER SOFTWARE
As this is from my own experience, it may help to describe how I use my software and which Macs I use, before detailing key points to look for when buying a refurbished Mac.
REFURBISHED MAC PRO COMPUTER PRO
An older refurbished MacBook Pro or Mac Desktop can suit your needs perfectly, and be way cheaper than buying brand new. That may have held water 15 years ago, when advances in technology seemed to be taking giant leaps with every generational release, but I’d argue that this just isn’t the case any more. In the commercial world of computers, as with everything else, we are constantly persuaded that only the newest machine will be up to the job. performanceĮveryone knows that Apple machines are more expensive than PCs, but by buying refurbished, they needn’t be. It’s not about what is better, or any Apple snobbery – simply ease of collaboration. Transferring files seamlessly back into your own working environment is crucial, so using a Mac for music professionally is simply a no brainer. Walk into any half decent recording facility, it’ll be Macs running. A good 99% of projects that I receive will have been made on Macs in the first place.

The top DAW of choice in professional settings is still ProTools, with Logic and Ableton running second and third. Clients, writers, studios will often supply you with data and parts compiled in different software. Note the term ‘very widely used’, which is where we come to….Īudio professionals have to be flexible when it comes to DAW formats. The exception is the very widely used Logic Pro, which is Apple only. They are all, along with ProTools, equally capable on Mac or PC. There are many DAWS on the market - notably Ableton, Cubase, Studio 1, Reason, FL Studio, Reaper to name but a few. It simply sounded better than anything else (and had a price tag for the dedicated hardware to match!), but that gap has now arguably gone. In the beginning, ProTools was the pro audio user’s weapon of choice. Although all Daws do much the same thing these days, the unlearning/ relearning process is just too time consuming when there’s work to be done and a living to be earned. PC argument, many Pro audio users end up working with the DAW they started with. It’s your tape machine, mixing desk and editing software environment. There are a couple of other good reasons why a Macbook Pro and/ or a Mac desktop should be your platform of choice:-Ī DAW (digital audio workstation) forms the heart of your system.
REFURBISHED MAC PRO COMPUTER PC
Most 3 rd party software manufacturers, however, support both platforms, and a good PC will certainly get the job done. There are certain hardware and software reasons why it can be strongly argued that Macs are superior machines – you can read more here. I’ll try to avoid the familiar battlefield of which platform is ‘better’! For pro users, one tends to stick to the platform you learned your craft on – even just changing from one set of shortcuts to another can be painful when there always seems to be a tight deadline looming. It’s the same story for my laptops, culminating in my current refurbished MacBook Pro. I’ve been through maybe 4 or 5 upgrades since then, all refurbished machines (and obviously ditched the old standalone recorder). It may surprise you to learn that the last brand new Mac I bought was a Performa 6500 in 1998, to run midi alongside a dedicated digital audio workstation (a Korg VS1680). What follows will be ‘in my experience’, an inevitably personal take on the subject. I have a static studio setup, and a mobile rig for my ‘on the road’ needs, and both of my rigs are built around refurbished machines.Įvery fellow audio professional that I know shares a similar path to me – their computer setup has evolved around their changing needs and practices alongside the steady march of technology, and we’ve all come to rely more and more on working ‘in the box’. Modern audio production all starts with capable and reliable computers. I’m an audio professional, and so demand high performance and minimum downtime from my Macs. Do I really need a brand new Mac for audio?
